What is Sophisticated Storage?

This pack includes Sophisticated Storage at version 0.10.26, using the file sophisticatedstorage-1.21-0.10.26.816.jar.[1]

It has been in the pack for a while: it was first included in version 0.32 or earlier, so it is not a recent addition to the mod list.[1]

Unverified The sources here do not show where the pack's quest book places this mod (its chapter, group, or what comes before and after it), or whether the ATM Star path uses it. Check the quest book in the pack itself for that. The items, recipes and configs are left to the other sections of this guide.

How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?

6 parts

Sophisticated Storage adds chests and barrels that you grow with upgrades. Here is a sensible order for your first crafts, using the in-pack recipes shown below.[2][3]

Make a Sophisticated Chest

Start with a Chest. It comes in wood variants, and the recipes shown for it include acacia, bamboo, birch, cherry and crimson. If you prefer a barrel, Barrel has the same kind of wood variants. The acacia chest is shown here as an example.[2]

Upgrade your old storage

The Basic Tier Upgrade upgrades vanilla inventories to their sophisticated version, so it is the item to reach for when you want to convert storage you already have.[3]

Climb the tiers

The tier upgrades run from copper through iron, gold and diamond up to netherite. Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade and Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade start from basic. After that the recipes chain: the gold one builds on the iron one, the diamond one on the gold one, and the netherite one on the diamond one. There are also versions that start from copper, such as Copper to Iron Tier Upgrade.[2]

The smelting, blasting and smoking upgrades work the same way, with the furnace sitting in an upgrade tab. The auto versions, such as Auto-smelting Upgrade, also pull and push items automatically.[3]

Once you have several storages, the Storage Controller lets you deposit and pipe items to and from a connected multiblock of storages.[3]

Inside a multiblock, Storage Input lets you pipe items in, and Storage Output lets you pipe items out. Storage I/O does both. The pack also has simple crafting recipes that convert one of these into the next, so a wrong pick isn't wasted.[2][3]

Bonus: Shulker Boxes

The pack lets you turn a vanilla shulker box into a Shulker Box with a shapeless recipe.[2]

Tip: Stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in a slot, from 2 up to 32 depending on the tier, so they are a good next step once your tiers are sorted.[3]

Unverified The recipes for the Upgrade Base, the Storage Tool and the stack upgrades were not in the sources available for this section, so how to craft them in this pack is unconfirmed. Check them in-game with JEI or EMI. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How does Sophisticated Storage work?

7 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.50 guide

Sophisticated Storage is less about machines and more about what you bolt onto your storage. There's no power system to deal with. Instead you get multiblock networks, pipe-friendly access blocks and a big pile of upgrades that turn a chest into a small automation hub. Here's how it works in this pack.[3]

Storage multiblocks

A Controller lets you deposit items into, and pipe items to and from, a connected multiblock of storages. That means one block can act as the front door for a whole wall of chests and barrels.[3]

If you have a separate cluster somewhere else, a Storage Link connects it to the controller. You link it with the Storage Tool, so keep that tool handy.[3]

Input, Output and I/O blocks

You don't need to commit to one. Each of the three can be converted into the next with a single-item crafting recipe, so you can swap a block's role without losing it.[4]

Barrels, chests and capacity

Limited barrels come in four versions, Limited Barrel 1 through Limited Barrel 4. Each one's tooltip shows its slot count and a base stack size multiplier, so check it in-game to compare them. The pack has a recipe per wood type, and here's the acacia one as an example.[3][4]

Stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in a slot. There are six of them: Tier 1 gives x2, Tier 1 Plus x3, Tier 2 x4, Tier 3 x8, Tier 4 x16 and Tier 5 x32.[3]

The Basic Tier Upgrade turns vanilla inventories into their sophisticated versions. Tier upgrades for copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite also exist, and each has its own recipe in the pack.[3][4]

Item handling upgrades

Most of the automation lives in upgrades slotted into the storage itself. Many have a basic and an advanced version, and the advanced one mainly adds more filtering options.[3]

  • Filter Upgrade filters the items piped in and/or out of the storage.[3]
  • Hopper Upgrade pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below. The Advanced Hopper Upgrade is faster and adds input/output options.[3]
  • Magnet Upgrade pulls items into the storage from a range. The advanced version has a greater range.[3]
  • Pickup Upgrade makes the storage pick up items.[3]
  • Void Upgrade voids the items you select in its filter.[3]
  • Feeding Upgrade feeds you food from the storage's inventory. The advanced version has more options for when the food is fed.[3]
  • Compacting Upgrade compresses items into their compressed variants, but only with 2x2 recipes. The advanced version handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes and has more filtering. The Compression Upgrade automatically compresses and decompresses items.[3]

Smelting and crafting in an upgrade tab

Some upgrades add a whole workstation as a tab in the storage. Crafting, Stonecutter, Smelting, Smoking and Blasting upgrades work this way, and there are also Chipped upgrades for several Chipped workbenches.[3]

The auto versions are the ones to look at for automation. Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-smoking Upgrade and Auto-blasting Upgrade automatically pull and push items. Smelting handles general smelting, smoking is for food, and blasting is for ores and metal stuff.[3]

In this pack the smoking and blasting versions are crafted from the auto-smelting one.[4]

Fluids and experience

The Pump Upgrade moves fluids between a Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced version also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it lets you filter which fluids get pumped. The XP Pump Upgrade moves experience between the Tank upgrade and you.[3]

Storage Tool and settings

The Storage Tool links, locks, and hides counts, tiers and locks on storages. Its tooltip says you switch modes with a keybind.[3]

Each storage has its own settings screen. The settings are inherited from the player, or overridden for that specific storage.[3]

Tip: The Packing Tape tooltip can show as disabled when the config is set to drop all storages as packed. If your tape is greyed out, that's why.[3]

Unverified No Sophisticated Storage config files are available for this pack, so I can't confirm any pack-specific values such as slot counts, upgrade slot limits or whether the packing tape setting is changed. Check the in-game tooltips for exact numbers.

How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?

4 parts

Storage in this pack scales through tier upgrade items rather than a quest line. The Chest, Barrel and Shulker Box move up through these tiers: basic, copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite. The recipes below are the exact ones this pack uses.[2]

Unverified No quests in this pack involve Sophisticated Storage, and it is not on the ATM Star quest path. You won't find a quest telling you when to upgrade, so pick your own pace.

Starting from basic

The Basic Tier Upgrade is the entry point of the chain, and it's cheap to make.[2]

From a basic container, each tier has a matching "Basic to ..." upgrade. Copper and iron are the entry-level ones. Gold, diamond and netherite each build on the previous Basic upgrade, so you climb the ladder one material at a time.[2]

Upgrading from copper

If you already have a copper container, you don't need to start over. The pack has dedicated upgrades that take it straight to iron, gold, diamond or netherite. They follow the same pattern as the Basic line, with each one building on the step below it.[2]

Gold, diamond and the netherite finish

The top of the ladder works the same way. A gold container can go to diamond or straight to netherite, and a diamond container takes one last step to netherite.[2]

Tip: Plan your route before you craft. Every upgrade path in the pack is a separate item, so check which one matches the tier your container is at now and the tier you want next. That way you won't craft one you don't need.[2]

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?

2 parts

The one connection to another mod that shows up in this pack's recipes is Sophisticated Backpacks. Sophisticated Storage and Sophisticated Backpacks share the same family of upgrades, and the pack adds crafting recipes that convert an upgrade from one mod into its twin in the other. That way an upgrade you already own is never stuck in the wrong mod.[2]

Converting upgrades both ways

Every conversion goes in both directions, and each direction has its own recipe. Take the Magnet Upgrade: you can turn the storage version, Magnet Upgrade, into the backpack version, Magnet Upgrade, and back again. The two recipes are below.[2]

Backpack to storage

The same pattern covers the rest of the upgrade line. Examples are the Void Upgrade, Crafting Upgrade, Jukebox Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade and the smelting, blasting and smoking upgrades with their auto- versions. The advanced filter, pickup, magnet, feeding, void and compacting upgrades are covered too. Each has a matching backpack-side item with the same name.[2]

Stack upgrades use different tier names

Stack upgrades convert as well, but the tier names don't line up one to one. The storage mod's tiers run one step ahead of the backpack mod's, so check this list before you craft.[2]

Tip: The two directions use different extra materials. Open the recipe for the exact upgrade you want in your recipe viewer before you gather anything.[2]

Unverified Whether a converted upgrade keeps its settings, such as filters, is not confirmed by the recipe data, so test it with a spare upgrade before you convert one you have set up.
