What is Sophisticated Storage?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Sophisticated Storage adds upgradeable chests and barrels, plus tools to tie them together into one big storage setup. This pack includes version 1.5.91 of the mod. It's for you if you're tired of chests everywhere and want storage that grows with your progress.[1][2]
Where it fits in progression
The pack's Basic Storage quest chapter walks you through the tiers in order. Start with the Copper Chest ("Copper Chest" quest). It's optional: you don't need it to make an Iron Chest, but it can save you some iron. Then move up through the Iron Chest, Gold Chest and Diamond Chest to the Netherite Chest, which the quest calls the biggest chest in the mod. Each tier also has a barrel version, and the quests accept either one.[2]
Linking storages together
The Storage Controller lets you treat several storages as one big multiblock. It also acts as the in/out point for everything attached to it, so you can combine it with mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics. Place storages next to the controller, or next to storages already connected to it, and they join the network. This works up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions.[2]
If you'd rather not build everything touching, use the Storage Tool. Right-click the controller to bind it, then right-click each storage to link it. The wireless range is the same 14 blocks. The Storage Link connects storages that aren't attached to a controller, again within 14 blocks.[2]
Upgrades
Upgrades start from the Upgrade Base. The quest book points you to the Sophisticated Backpack upgrades and says the Sophisticated Storage versions function about the same, though you need to craft the storage equivalents.[2]
How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Sophisticated Storage is all about starting with a simple chest or barrel and growing it into a proper storage network. Here is the order to tackle things in this pack, which follows the Basic Storage chapter of the quest book.[2]
Tier up your chest or barrel
Chests and barrels get better in tiers. In this pack, a tier upgrade combines the lower-tier storage with the next material, and the pack has changed these recipes from the mod's defaults. The quest "Copper Chest" quest points you at the Copper Chest first, but you do not need it on the way to iron. It is only a way to save some iron.[2][3]

The first real goal is the Iron Chest, covered by the quest "Iron Chest" quest. The barrel versions work the same way, and the quest accepts either the chest or the barrel.[2][3]

Make the Upgrade Base
Before you start adding features to your storage, craft the Upgrade Base. The quest a quest in "Basic Storage" calls it the base for upgrades, and says the Sophisticated Storage upgrades function about the same as the Sophisticated Backpack ones, so you can use those as a reference.[2]

Build a Storage Controller
Once you have a few storages, the Storage Controller lets you work with them as one big multiblock. Place storages next to the controller, or next to storages already connected to it, and they join the network. This works up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions. The controller also acts as an in/out point for every storage attached to it, so it can be combined with mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics.[2][4]

Link storages wirelessly
If you do not want everything touching the controller, craft the Storage Tool. Right-click the controller to bind it, then right-click each storage you want to link. The wireless range is the same 14 blocks.[2]

The Storage Link goes one step further. It connects a separate multiblock of storages to the controller, so you do not have to right-click every single storage. The same 14-block range applies, and you use the Storage Tool to link it to the controller.[2][4]

Keep upgrading
The quest chain continues from iron to the Gold Chest ("Gold Chest" quest), then the Diamond Chest ("Diamond Chest" quest), and finally the Netherite Chest ("Netherite Chest" quest), which the quest calls the biggest of the chests. Each step upgrades the previous tier, and the barrels follow the same ladder.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Storage work?
9 parts
Sophisticated Storage is built around placeable storage blocks, such as the Chest, Barrel and the Limited Barrels from Limited Barrel 1 up to Limited Barrel 4. You then shape how each block behaves by putting upgrades in it. Some upgrades change capacity, some move items for you, and some add a whole crafting station as an extra tab. This section walks through how those pieces fit together.[5][6]
Limited Barrels
Limited Barrels trade slot count for bigger stacks. Each one's tooltip shows how many slots it has and its base stack size multiplier, so hover over it before you commit to one for a bulk item.[5]
Unverified The exact slot counts and stack multipliers for Limited Barrel I to IV in this pack are not given in the sources. Check the in-game tooltip.
Storage multiblocks
The big feature is linking many storage blocks into one multiblock. The Controller lets you deposit items into a connected multiblock of storages and pipe items in and out of it, so the whole group acts like one inventory from the outside.[5]
Your storages don't all need to touch each other. Storage connectors such as the Acacia Storage Connector or the Bamboo Storage Connector bridge gaps between storage blocks inside a multiblock. If you have a completely separate cluster somewhere else, a Storage Link connects that separate multiblock to the Controller. You make that connection with the Storage Tool.[5][6]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: sophisticatedstorage:acacia_storage_connector
Each wood type has its own connector recipe in this pack.
The Storage Tool has more than one job. It links storages, locks them, and hides counts, tiers and locks on your storages for a cleaner look. You switch between its modes with a keybind, which the tool's tooltip shows.[5]
Piping into and out of a multiblock
To automate a multiblock, place one of three blocks as part of it. Each one gives your pipes a different kind of access:[5]
- The Storage Input only lets you pipe items into the multiblock. It is also optimized for low tps impact.[5]
- The Storage Output only lets you pipe items out of the multiblock.[5]
- The Storage I/O lets you pipe items both into and out of the multiblock.[5]
This pack has changed the recipes for these three blocks, and you can convert them into each other in a loop in the crafting grid. So if you built the wrong type, you can just craft it into the one you need.[6]
Capacity: stack upgrades and downgrades
Stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in each slot. These are the tiers:[5]
- Tier 1 multiplies stacks per slot by 2.[5]
- Tier 1 Plus multiplies stacks per slot by 3.[5]
- Tier 2 multiplies stacks per slot by 4.[5]
- Tier 3 multiplies stacks per slot by 8.[5]
- Tier 4 multiplies stacks per slot by 16.[5]
- Tier 5 multiplies stacks per slot by 32.[5]
- Omega tier multiplies stacks per slot by the maximum value, ×33,554,431.[5]
Stack downgrades go the other way. The three tiers divide the number of stacks per slot by 8, 16 and 32. They are handy when you want a storage to hold only a small amount of each item.[5]
Moving items with upgrades
Even without a multiblock, a single storage block can do a lot of item handling through upgrades:[5]
- The Hopper Upgrade pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below. The advanced version is faster and adds input and output options.[5]
- The Filter Upgrade filters items piped into and/or out of the storage. The advanced version has more filtering options.[5]
- The Pickup Upgrade makes the storage pick up items. The Magnet Upgrade pulls items into the storage from range, and the advanced magnet reaches a greater range. Both advanced versions add more filtering.[5]
- The Void Upgrade voids items you select in its filter. The advanced version has more filtering options.[5]
- The Compacting Upgrade compacts items into their compressed variants, using only 2x2 recipes. The advanced version handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes and has more filtering. The Compression Upgrade automatically compresses and decompresses items.[5]
Processing inside your storage
Some upgrades put a workstation right in an upgrade tab. The crafting, stonecutter, smelting, smoking and blasting upgrades each give you that station inside the storage's interface. The automatic versions go further. The Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-smoking Upgrade and Auto-blasting Upgrade automatically pull and push items, so the storage processes its own contents.[5]
In this pack, you make the Auto-blasting and Auto-smoking Upgrades from an Auto-smelting Upgrade. Get the smelting version first.[6]

A couple of upgrades work on you, the player. The Feeding Upgrade feeds you food from the storage's inventory. The Alchemy Upgrade automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets. The advanced versions add more options for when you get fed and extra effect filtering.[5]
Fluids and experience
Fluid and XP handling goes through the Tank upgrade. The Pump Upgrade pumps fluids between a Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced pump also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and lets you filter which fluids get pumped. The XP Pump Upgrade moves experience between a Tank upgrade and the player.[5]
Tier upgrades
The Basic Tier Upgrade upgrades vanilla inventories to their sophisticated version. There is also a chain of tier upgrades, and in this pack each one is crafted from the previous one. The chain goes from Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade to Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade, then Basic to Gold Tier Upgrade, and finally Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade.[5][6]

Settings and special upgrades
Each storage has its own settings tab. Settings are either inherited from your player settings or overridden just for that storage.[5]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Sophisticated Storage in this pack is a straight tier ladder: Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, then Netherite. The pack's quests follow the same order, and every tier quest accepts either the chest or the barrel version, so pick whichever you like.[2]
The tier ladder
The tier upgrade recipes in the pack are marked as changed by the pack. Each step takes the previous tier's container and upgrades it. The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack recipes.[3]
The first step is the Copper Chest. It is optional. The quest says you don't need it to make an Iron Chest, and you can use it if you want to save some iron.[2]

Barrels follow the same ladder, for example Iron Barrel and Netherite Barrel. The pack also has separate double-chest tier upgrade recipes for chests, including one that goes from the Diamond Chest to the Netherite Chest.[3]
Linking your storage
Beyond the tiers, the quest chapter covers networking. The Storage Controller (a quest in "Basic Storage") lets you treat many storages as one big multiblock. Place storages next to the controller, or next to ones already connected to it, up to 14 blocks away in all directions. The controller also works as an in/out point for mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics.[2]

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Sophisticated Storage ties into a few other mods in this pack. The strongest link is Sophisticated Backpacks, because upgrades from the two mods can be converted into each other. Chipped and the Sawmill mod each feed into workstation upgrades, and the Storage Controller is meant to plug into storage-network mods.[2][3]
Sophisticated Backpacks: swapping upgrades
The pack has crafting recipes that turn a Sophisticated Storage upgrade into its Sophisticated Backpacks twin. The pack changed all of these recipes.[3]
This covers utility upgrades such as Magnet Upgrade and Void Upgrade, and advanced versions such as Advanced Filter Upgrade. Here is the storage-to-backpack conversion for the Magnet Upgrade:[3]

The quest for the Upgrade Base points the same way: it tells you to look at the Sophisticated Backpacks upgrades, and says the Storage equivalents work about the same.[2]
Chipped workstation upgrades
Chipped adds a storage upgrade for each of its workstations: Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade, Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade, Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade. The pack changed all of these recipes. Here is the one that starts from the Mason Table:[3]

Storage networks with Applied Energistics and Integrated Dynamics
The pack's quest for the Storage Controller says it lets several storages act like one big multiblock. It also says this can be combined with mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics, because the Storage Controller acts as an in/out point for every storage attached to it. See a quest in "Basic Storage".[2]
Storages connect by sitting next to the controller or next to a storage that is already connected, up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions. For wireless setups, the Storage Link connects storages that aren't attached to a controller, and the Storage Tool binds a controller to storages without placing them next to it. Both keep the same 14-block range.[2]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Sophisticated Storage?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Everything for this mod in the pack's quest book sits in one chapter, Basic Storage. Every quest in it unlocks after a quest called Sophisticated Storage, so that's your entry point. The chapter has two branches: a chest-tier ladder and a Storage Controller line.[2]
The chest ladder
The ladder is a straight line, and each quest accepts either the chest or the matching barrel. Submit whichever you've built.[2]
- "Copper Chest" quest asks for a Copper Chest or Copper Barrel. The quest says you can skip it on the way to an Iron Chest, but using it can save you some iron.[2]
- "Iron Chest" quest asks for an Iron Chest or Iron Barrel. It unlocks after Sophisticated Storage and the Copper Chest quest.[2]
- "Gold Chest" quest asks for a Gold Chest or Gold Barrel, and it comes after the Iron Chest quest.[2]
- "Diamond Chest" quest asks for a Diamond Chest or Diamond Barrel, and it comes after the Gold Chest quest.[2]
- "Netherite Chest" quest asks for a Netherite Chest or Netherite Barrel. The quest calls it the biggest chest from Sophisticated Storage, and it comes after the Diamond Chest quest.[2]
Controller, tool and link
a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Storage Controller. The quest text explains that it lets you treat multiple storages as one big multiblock. It also says the controller works as an in/out point for mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics. Storages placed next to the controller, or next to storages already connected to it, join the network, up to 14 blocks away in all directions.[2]
a quest in "Basic Storage" comes after the Controller quest and asks for the Storage Tool. Right-click the controller to bind it, then right-click storages to link them wirelessly. The range is the same 14 blocks.[2]
a quest in "Basic Storage" needs both the Controller quest and the Storage Tool quest first. It asks for the Storage Link, which connects storages that aren't attached to a controller or to blocks connected to it. You get a wireless multiblock without right-clicking each storage, and the 14-block range still applies.[2]
Upgrades
a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base. To keep the chapter from filling up with upgrade quests, the text points you to the Sophisticated Backpacks upgrades. You'll need to craft the Sophisticated Storage versions, but the text says they work about the same.[2]
