What is Silent's Gems?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Silent's Gems is the mod for colorful gemstones and building blocks. It adds 16 gemstones, and you can craft them into gem blocks, bricks, small bricks, polished, chiseled and smooth gem stones, glass and lamps. The pack includes version 5.1.3.[1][2]

If you love building, this one is for you. It gives you a lot of new colors to work with, and the gems can also become tools and armor when Silent Gear is installed. Silent Gear is what you need for gem tools and armor, and Silent Lib is required for the mod itself.[1]

Where the gems come from

The gems are spread across the three vanilla dimensions and overlap a bit, so some Nether and End gems can occasionally turn up in the overworld. The mod lets you configure which gems generate in which dimension and how often, and you can even disable specific gems. I can't confirm from the sources whether the pack changes any of those defaults.[1]

Black Diamonds spawn somewhat low in the Nether and less often than other gems, so you should find plenty while digging for ancient debris. White Diamonds spawn somewhat low in the End, so you'll need to dig around. Both are strong in all stats but much harder to find.[1]

Gem roles

If you use the gems for Silent Gear tools and armor, each gem fits a role. Gems are usually stronger in their role's stats, and every gem still has unique traits.[1]

  • Durability: Ruby and Carnelian. They are good for repairs and area-of-effect harvest tools like the hammer and excavator.[1]
  • Speed: Topaz, Citrine and Heliodor. They are good for harvest tools.[1]
  • Damage: Peridot, Moldavite and Rose Quartz. They are good for weapons like swords and bows.[1]
  • Armor: Sapphire, Iolite and Ammolite.[1]
  • All-Rounder: Turquoise, Kyanite, Alexandrite and Black/White Diamond. They are above average in most stats.[1]

Handy extras

  • Gem Bag: collects and stores gems as you mine them, which frees up your inventory. It doesn't apply to ores.[1]
  • Glowrose: a light-emitting flower that spawns naturally. Its light is enough to prevent mob spawns just two blocks away (configurable), and potted glowroses give off much more light than freestanding ones.[1]
  • Flower Basket: works like the Gem Bag, but collects flowers you mine.[1]
  • Summon Kitty and Summon Puppy: spawn a tamed cat or dog, which you can name in an anvil.[1]
Tip: A hammer and prospector hammer from Silent Gear make hunting for the rarer diamond variants much easier.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't show where Silent's Gems fits in the pack's progression, and no quests involving it were found. Whether Silent Gear is also in the pack, which you need for gem tools and armor, is not confirmed here either.

How do you get started with Silent's Gems?

5 parts

Silent's Gems is all about colorful gemstones: 16 of them, plus a pile of building blocks you can make from them. Your first job is simply to find gems, then decide what to turn them into.[1]

Step 1: Find your first gems

The 16 gems are split across the Overworld, the Nether and the End, and each dimension has its own matching gem ore block. Some Nether and End gems can occasionally turn up in the Overworld too, so keep an eye out while you mine.[1]

Two gems are much rarer than the rest. Black Diamonds spawn fairly low in the Nether, and you'll find plenty while digging for ancient debris. White Diamonds spawn low in the End. Both are notably strong in all stats, so they're worth hunting for later.[1]

Unverified The mod lets you configure which gems generate in which dimension and how often. This pack's ore generation settings could not be checked, so the spread you actually see may differ.

Step 2: Know what each gem is good for

Silent's Gems doesn't make tools or armor by itself. Those need Silent Gear, where each gem fills a role and is usually stronger in that role's stats. It's still worth knowing the roles early so you know which gems to save.[1]

Unverified Whether Silent Gear is installed in this pack could not be confirmed from the available sources.

Step 3: Store gems compactly

Once gems start piling up, pack them into gem blocks and uncraft them whenever you need the gems back. Watch out for the recipe names in this pack: the one ending in "_from_block" is the one that makes the block, and the one ending in "_block" turns the block back into gems.[3]

Step 4: Start decorating

This is where the mod really shines for builders. Every gem can become bricks, glass and lamps, and each lamp also has an inverted version.[1][3]

Fun extras

The mod also has a couple of potato items you can craft right away: the Iron Potato, described as the potato that does not compromise, and the Potato on a Stick.[3][4]

How does Silent's Gems work?

5 parts

This mod is all about gemstones. You mine 16 different gems, turn them into colorful building blocks, and, if you also have Silent Gear, forge them into tools and armor. Instead of machines, it gives you a handful of handy utility items that make collecting gems and flowers easier.[1]

Unverified Machines, multiblocks, power, fluid handling and automation aren't covered anywhere in the material available for this guide, so this section can't confirm whether the mod has any of them in this pack.

Gems and where they spawn

The 16 gems are spread across the three vanilla dimensions, and there's some overlap between them. Some Nether and End gems can occasionally turn up in the Overworld too, so keep an eye out while you're caving. Each of the three dimensions has its own matching gem ore block.[1]

The mod lets you control which gems generate in which dimension and how often, and you can even switch individual gems off completely. That's why ore spawns can differ from pack to pack.[1]

Unverified No config files for this mod were available for this pack, so the pack's actual ore generation settings can't be confirmed here.

Two gems are much rarer than the rest. Black Diamond spawns fairly low in the Nether and less often than other gems, so you'll likely find plenty while digging for ancient debris. It's dark with a slightly orange hue. White Diamonds spawn fairly low in the End, which means you'll need to dig around for them. They're pale with a slightly violet hue. Both diamond variants are notably strong in every stat.[1]

Tip: Hunting for the diamond variants? A hammer and a prospector hammer from Silent Gear make the search much easier.[1]

Gem roles and Silent Gear

The gems can't become tools or armor on their own. For that you need Silent Gear, which this mod supports out of the box with no extra data packs. Each gem fits into one or more roles. A gem is usually stronger in its role's stats, and with default ore configs it's equal to other gems from the same dimension in its other stats.[1]

  • Durability: higher durability and armor durability, which makes these gems good for repairs and area-of-effect tools like hammers and excavators. Ruby and Carnelian fill this role.[1]
  • Speed: higher harvest speed, which suits pickaxes, shovels and axes. This role covers Topaz, Citrine and Heliodor.[1]
  • Damage: higher melee and ranged damage for swords and bows. This role covers Peridot, Moldavite and Rose Quartz.[1]
  • Armor: higher armor stats. This role covers Sapphire, Iolite and Ammolite.[1]
  • All-Rounder: above average in most stats, good when you need a mix. This role covers Turquoise, Kyanite, Alexandrite and the Black and White Diamonds.[1]

Every gem also has its own unique traits. For example, Barrier Jacket grants more magic armor at higher durability, while Fractal gains armor toughness but loses magic armor as it takes damage. Cloaking grants invisibility at the cost of hunger, Critical Strike sometimes deals significantly more damage than normal, and Leaping gives jump boost and slow falling.[1][4]

Gem Bag and Flower Basket

Gem Bags collect and store gems automatically as you mine them, which keeps your inventory free for everything else. Ore blocks don't count, so they only pick up the gems themselves. The Flower Basket works the same way for flowers: any flower you mine goes straight into the basket.[1]

Glowroses

Glowroses are light-emitting flowers that spawn naturally throughout the world. Their light prevents mob spawns just two blocks away by default, and that distance is configurable. You can plant them in vanilla flower pots, and a potted glowrose gives off much more light than a freestanding one.[1]

Crafting chains for gem blocks

Every gem comes with a family of building blocks: gem blocks, bricks, small bricks, polished, chiseled and smooth gem stones, glass and lamps. In this pack, the storage blocks, bricks, glass and lamps are all made with ordinary crafting table recipes. Storage blocks work both ways, so you can pack gems into a block and break the block back down whenever you need them. Chaos Essence and Block of Chaos Essence work the same way.[1][3]

Each gem also has a lamp, such as Alexandrite Lamp. You can turn a lamp into an inverted version, such as Alexandrite Lamp Inverted On, with a shapeless crafting recipe that uses the lamp itself. The same pattern works for every gem shown in this pack's recipes.[3]

How do you progress through Silent's Gems?

3 parts

The recipes the pack includes for this mod don't set up a strict tier ladder. Each gem, like Alexandrite, Black Diamond, Carnelian or White Diamond, feeds into the same set of crafts. A good way to think about progression is: collect gems, compress the extras into storage blocks, then spend them on decoration and a few fun utility items.[3]

Gems and storage blocks

Every gem has a storage block, such as Topaz Block or Moldavite Block, and you can craft the block back into loose gems. Chaos Essence works the same way with Block of Chaos Essence. Blocks are the easy way to stockpile a gem you aren't using yet.[3]

Watch out: The recipe ids are named the opposite way you'd expect. The recipe ending in _from_block is the one that makes the block, and the recipe ending in _block turns the block back into gems. Keep this in mind if you search recipes by id.[3]

Once you have gems to spare, each one unlocks a matching set of building blocks. These include bricks like Citrine Bricks, glass like Iolite Glass and lamps like Kyanite Lamp. The full set also exists for ruby, sapphire and peridot, so you get the same options whichever gem colour you prefer.[3]

How does Silent's Gems work with other mods?

3 parts

Silent's Gems hooks into a few other mods in this pack. You can process its gem ores with Create, cast its gems with Productive Metalworks, and its silver now turns into the pack's shared silver ingot. Here's how each one works.[3]

Crushing gem ores with Create

You can feed Silent's Gems ores into Create's crushing wheels. Each crushing recipe gives you the matching gem, a Nugget of Experience and a bit of stone that matches the ore's home dimension. It's a handy way to automate gem processing and pick up some experience while you're at it.[3]

Example: crushing Black Diamond Ore

Unverified The exact amounts and drop chances of each crushing output aren't confirmed here. Check the recipe viewer in-game. The sources also don't show crushing recipes for every gem ore in the mod. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Casting gems with Productive Metalworks

If you run a Productive Metalworks setup, you can cast Silent's Gems gems. Each recipe pours a molten version of the gem into a Gem Cast and gives you the solid gem. The pack has casting recipes for Alexandrite, Ammolite, Black Diamond, Carnelian, Citrine, Heliodor, Iolite, Kyanite, Moldavite, Rose Quartz, Topaz, Turquoise and White Diamond.[3]

Unverified How you get the molten gem fluids in the first place, and how much fluid each cast uses, isn't confirmed by the available sources.

Silver goes to All the Ores

This pack changed Silent's Gems' silver recipes so they all give the shared Silver Ingot instead of a separate ingot. Smelting or blasting Raw Silver gives you that ingot, and so does breaking down a Block of Silver in a crafting grid. That means any silver you mine from this mod works right away in everything else that uses silver in the pack.[3]

What changed in Silent's Gems between versions?

Silent's Gems was added to All the Mods 10 in pack version 3.0, arriving as mod version 5.0.3.[5]

In All the Mods 10 3.2, the pack still ships Silent's Gems 5.0.3, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. That's the same mod version the pack added in 3.0, so you can expect it to behave the same way in 3.2 as it did then.[5][6]

Unverified The changelog for the shipped mod version isn't available, so this section can't cover what that version changed compared with earlier releases of the mod.
