What is Productive Metalworks?

1 part

This pack ships Productive Metalworks 1.21.1-1.10.0. It has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.32 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modpack and not a recent addition.[1]

Where it fits in progression is clearest from the quest book. The mod appears in the "silent_gear" quest chapter, so you meet it as part of the Silent Gear questline, not as a standalone chapter.[2]

How the quests introduce it

  1. The first step is Fire Clay, which is the task of quest a quest in "?".[2]
  2. Next comes Liquid Heating Coil in quest a quest in "?". That quest only unlocks after the Fire Clay quest and three other quests in the chapter.[2]
  3. Then you move on to Casting Table, Casting Basin and Foundry Tap in quest a quest in "?", which follows the heating coil quest.[2]
  4. Finally there are separate quests for each cast: Rod Cast (a quest in "?"), Gem Cast (a quest in "?"), Ingot Cast (a quest in "?"), Nugget Cast (a quest in "?"), Plate Cast (a quest in "?") and Gear Cast (a quest in "?"). All six unlock after the same earlier quest in the chapter.[2]

Unverified The mod's in-game guide text was not available as readable content, so this page can't confirm exactly how the machines work, who the mod is best suited to, or any pack-specific changes to its recipes or configs. The sources also don't place the mod on the ATM Star quest path.

How do you get started with Productive Metalworks?

5 parts

Metalworking in this pack is built around the Foundry: a multiblock that melts items into liquid, which you then pour into casts and blocks. The pack's quest chapter introduces the early items in a clear order, and the steps below follow it.[2][3]

Start with Fire Clay

The first quest in the chapter asks for Fire Clay: a quest in "?".[2]

Make a Liquid Heating Coil

Next up is the Liquid Heating Coil, quest a quest in "?", which unlocks after the Fire Clay quest and a few others. You need it because the bottom of the Foundry has to be made up of Heating Coils.[2][3]

Casting Table, Casting Basin and Foundry Tap

Quest a quest in "?" asks for all three casting pieces: the Casting Table, the Casting Basin and the Foundry Tap. It comes right after the coil quest, so you can make them straight away.[2]

Build the Foundry

  • The minimum size is 3x3x2, because there has to be at least one air block inside the structure. Corners are optional.[3]
  • The bottom layer has to be made up of Heating Coils.[3]
  • You also need a Foundry Controller, a Foundry Tank and at least one Foundry Drain.[3]

The Foundry only works with fuel inside the Foundry Tank. You can right-click a bucket into the tank or supply fuel via a pipe.[3]

To melt things, add items through the controller GUI or drop them right into the Foundry. After some time they turn into liquid. If you add a second liquid, some combinations alloy, for example 2/3 Iron and 1/3 Nickel turn into Invar. A stability upgrade prevents alloying.[3]

Tip: Foundry blocks can be recolored with dye. The pack has dye recipes for fire bricks, controllers, tanks, drains, windows and capacitors, so you can pick your colors once the structure works.[4]

Pour and make casts

Right-click a Foundry Tap attached to a drain to extract the liquid. Pour it into a Casting Basin to get a block: the basin slowly cools the fluid, and you right-click it (or use a pipe or hopper) to take the result out.[3]

The Casting Table turns fluids into casts instead. Add a cast by right-clicking with the item in hand. Pouring liquids over items placed in the table or basin can also create new items.[3]

The cast quests ask for the Rod Cast (a quest in "?"), Gem Cast (a quest in "?"), Ingot Cast (a quest in "?"), Nugget Cast (a quest in "?"), Plate Cast (a quest in "?") and Gear Cast (a quest in "?"). In this pack each cast is made by pouring molten steel over the matching item, so you will need molten steel first.[2][4]

How does Productive Metalworks work?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Productive Metalworks is built around one big idea: the Foundry. You build it as a multiblock, fuel it, drop items in to melt them, and then pour the resulting liquid metal into casting blocks. The sources I have explain this workflow well, so that's what this section covers.[5]

Building the Foundry

The minimum size is 3x3x2. It needs at least one air block inside the structure, and the corners are optional, so you can skip them if you're short on bricks.[5]

The bottom layer has to be made of Heating Coils. On top of that, the structure needs a Foundry Controller, a Foundry Tank and at least one Foundry Drain.[5]

  • Controller: this is where you open the GUI to add items. It is also where upgrades are installed.[5]
  • Tank: holds the fuel for the Foundry.[5]
  • Drain: where the molten fluid comes out. You need at least one.[5]

The pack has a recipe for the black variant of the controller. The other colors are made by recoloring, which I cover below.[6]

Fueling: liquid or power

The Foundry only works when there is fuel inside a Foundry Tank. You can right-click a bucket into the tank, or feed fuel in through a pipe.[5]

If you'd rather use energy, swap the Fluid Heating Coils for Powered Heating Coils. High Powered Heating Coils create even more heat. When you go powered, you must also replace the Foundry Tank with a Foundry Capacitor, and you supply energy through a cable attached to the capacitor.[5]

Watch out: Powered Heating Coils need a Foundry Capacitor instead of a Foundry Tank. Don't leave the tank in place after switching coils.[5]

Smelting and alloying

You can add items through the controller GUI, or just drop them into the Foundry. After some time they turn into liquid.[5]

If a second liquid is present, some of it may undergo an alloying reaction. The example the mod gives is 2/3 Iron and 1/3 Nickel turning into Invar. You can also add fluids by hand by right-clicking a drain with a bucket.[5]

Controller upgrades

  • Stability upgrade: disables fluid alloying in the Foundry. Use it when you want your metals to stay separate.[5]
  • Time upgrade: speeds up melting and alloying. You can install multiple of them.[5]
  • Second-tier time upgrade: described as twice as good as the other time upgrade.[5]

Casting

To turn fluid into blocks, you use a Casting Basin. Right-click a Foundry Tap attached to a drain to extract the fluid. The basin slowly cools the fluid into a block. Right-click the basin to take the result out, or empty it with a pipe or a hopper.[5]

A Casting Table turns fluids into different casts. You add a cast by right-clicking the table with the item in hand. You can also pour liquids over items placed in a Casting Table or Basin to create new items.[5]

Colors and recoloring

Foundry parts come in several colors, and the pack has dye recipes for them. Combine a dye with any matching part (fire bricks, controllers, drains, tanks, windows or capacitors) to get that color. Black, blue and brown are all confirmed in the sources I have. For example, this recipe recolors a controller to black.[6]

Crafting Shapeless

  • any foundry controller
  • any black dye

Recipe id: productivemetalworks:crafting/black_foundry_controller_from_dye

The Black Foundry Drain and the Black Foundry Tank have their own base recipes too, built from the Fire Brick. The tank and the Black Foundry Window also use colorless glass.[6]

Unverified The sources don't give heating coil recipes, fuel burn rates, melting speeds, fluid capacities or energy use per tick. The pack has no config files for this mod either, so any pack-specific tuning of the Foundry is unconfirmed. The in-game guide also has a section on gear parts, casts and grading, but its text isn't available to me, so I can't describe how it works.

How do you progress through Productive Metalworks?

3 parts

Productive Metalworks doesn't have a formal tier ladder in this pack that I can confirm. What the pack does give you is a short quest chain in the silent_gear chapter, and it takes you from your first Fire Clay to casting the full set of molds. Here's how it runs.[2]

The quest path

  1. Start with Fire Clay. The first quest in the chain, a quest in "?", just asks you to get it.[2]
  2. Next comes the Liquid Heating Coil in a quest in "?". It also needs several other quests in the chapter done first, so you may unlock it later than the Fire Clay quest suggests.[2]
  3. Then the core casting gear: a quest in "?" asks for a Casting Table, a Casting Basin and a Foundry Tap. It unlocks after the heating coil quest.[2]
  4. Finally, six cast quests, each asking for one cast: Rod Cast (a quest in "?"), Gem Cast (a quest in "?"), Ingot Cast (a quest in "?"), Nugget Cast (a quest in "?"), Plate Cast (a quest in "?") and Gear Cast (a quest in "?"). All six unlock after the same earlier quest, which isn't one of this mod's own.[2]

Beyond the quests: colored foundry parts

The quests stop at the casts, but the pack also has foundry building blocks you can dye. Fire bricks, controllers, drains, tanks, windows and capacitors all have dye-based recipes, with colors such as black, blue, brown, cyan, gray, green, light blue and light gray visible in the recipe list I was given. Some recipes weren't shown, so I can't give you the full color list. The black controller, for example, has its own crafting recipe:[4]

Unverified The pack's in-game guide pages (intro, building, structure, casting, Silent Gear parts and grading) weren't available to me as readable text, so I can't confirm how the foundry multiblock is laid out or how Silent Gear part casting and grading work here. The mod also isn't on the ATM Star quest path.

How does Productive Metalworks work with other mods?

5 parts

Productive Metalworks is mostly about melting things and casting them, so its links to other mods show up as melting, alloying and casting recipes. In this pack it connects to Oritech, AllTheOres, Allthemodium, Create items and the Dyenamics colour set.[4]

Oritech

Oritech has the deepest link. You can melt its gems, small clumps and small dusts of copper, gold, iron, nickel and platinum into the matching molten metal from Productive Metalworks, for example Molten Nickel or Molten Platinum.[4]

Alloying covers four Oritech metals: Molten Adamant, Molten Biosteel, Molten Duratium and Molten Energite. Each is made from Productive Metalworks fluids together with Oritech's own. Here is the Biosteel one:[4]

Molten BiosteelMod recipe

Fluid Alloying (productivemetalworks)

Recipe id: oritech:compat/productivemetalworks/alloying/biosteel

You can also cast these Oritech materials with your casts: Biosteel Ingot, Duratium Ingot and Energite Ingot use the Ingot Cast, while Fluxite and Biomass use the Gem Cast.[4]

Some of the Oritech compat casting recipes are changed by the pack. Electrum, nickel, platinum and steel casting (ingots, blocks and nuggets where they exist) give you AllTheOres items such as Steel Ingot, Electrum Block and Platinum Nugget.[4]

AllTheOres and Create-named recipes

The recipes filed under the Create name are also changed by the pack. Casting Molten Brass gives AllTheOres brass in block, ingot, nugget and plate form, and casting Molten Copper gives Copper Nugget and Copper Plate. So the pack's AllTheOres metals are what you get from the casting table and basin.[4]

There is one genuine Create item here too: you can cast Chocolate with the ingot cast into a Bar of Chocolate.[4]

Item Casting (productivemetalworks)

Recipe id: productivemetalworks:casting/create/bar_of_chocolate

Allthemodium

The Allthemodium metals can all be cast. Molten Allthemodium, Molten Unobtainium and Molten Vibranium each have casting recipes for an ingot, nugget, plate, rod and gear, using the matching ingot, nugget, plate, rod or gear cast. Start with Molten Vibranium if you want a quick look at how it works.[4]

Allthemodium also affects your foundry upgrades. The High Powered Heating Coil is cast using Soul Lava on top of a Powered Heating Coil.[4]

Block Casting (productivemetalworks)

Dyenamics foundry capacitors

The pack adds a casting recipe for a coloured Foundry Capacitor in every Dyenamics colour. You cast each one from the matching coloured Fire Bricks and Molten Redstone, for example the Amber Foundry Capacitor.[4]

Quests

The pack's quest chapter called silent_gear covers the Productive Metalworks setup. It has quests for Fire Clay (a quest in "?"), the Liquid Heating Coil (a quest in "?") and the casting table, basin and foundry tap together (a quest in "?"). There is also one quest for each cast: rod (a quest in "?"), gem (a quest in "?"), ingot (a quest in "?"), nugget (a quest in "?"), plate (a quest in "?") and gear (a quest in "?").[2]

Unverified Productive Metalworks has a Silent Gear section in its in-game guide, but its text wasn't available here, so how it works with Silent Gear in this pack is unconfirmed.

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Productive Metalworks?

2 parts

All the quests for this mod sit in one chapter, the Silent Gear chapter. None of them has a title in the quest data, so this section identifies them by their ID and by what they ask you to hand in. Every task is an item submission.[2]

The foundry setup chain

This chain walks you through getting your metalworking station running, in this order:[2]

  1. a quest in "?" is the starting point. It asks for Fire Clay.[2]
  2. a quest in "?" asks for a Liquid Heating Coil plus a second item task. The data doesn't say which item that is. This quest unlocks only after a quest in "?" and three other quests that aren't part of this mod.[2]
  3. a quest in "?" asks for three items: a Casting Table, a Casting Basin and a Foundry Tap. It unlocks after a quest in "?".[2]

The cast quests

Six more quests each ask for a single cast item. All six unlock after the same quest, which belongs to another mod and isn't covered by this guide. They don't depend on each other, so you can do them in any order.[2]

Unverified The quest data doesn't show whether the cast quests are meant to be finished before or after the foundry setup chain, or what rewards any of these quests give.

What changed in Productive Metalworks between versions?

1 part

Productive Metalworks has been in All the Mods 10 since the 2.32 release, which added version 1.21.1-1.0.2. All the Mods 10 4.5 ships 1.21.1-1.10.0, so the mod has moved a long way since it joined the pack.[1][7]

Pack releases that updated the mod

  • 2.32: added at 1.21.1-1.0.2.[7]
  • 2.33: 1.0.2 to 1.0.3.[8]
  • 2.36: 1.0.3 to 1.1.0.[9]
  • 2.37: 1.1.0 to 1.2.1.[10]
  • 2.39: 1.2.1 to 1.2.3.[11]
  • 2.40: 1.2.3 to 1.2.5.[12]
  • 2.42: 1.2.5 to 1.3.0.[13]
  • 2.43: 1.3.0 to 1.3.1.[14]
  • 2.47: 1.3.1 to 1.5.0.[15]
  • 3.0: 1.5.0 to 1.5.2.[16]
  • 3.2: 1.5.2 to 1.6.0.[17]
  • 4.0: 1.6.0 to 1.8.0.[18]
  • 4.1: 1.8.0 to 1.9.2.[19]
  • 4.2: 1.9.2 to 1.9.3.[20]
  • 4.3: 1.9.3 to 1.10.0.[21]

The latest bump in these changelogs is 4.3, and 4.5 still uses that same 1.10.0 jar. Several updates jumped over versions in one go, such as 2.47, 4.0 and 4.1, so the pack didn't ship every release the mod made.[1][15][18][19][21]

Unverified What actually changed inside each Productive Metalworks version (new features, fixes, recipe or balance changes) is unverified. The pack changelogs only record version numbers, and no changelogs are stored for the shipped jars. Check the mod's own release notes before assuming a specific change.
