What is Ars Elemental?

Ars Elemental is in the pack at version 0.7.0.10.3, built for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been part of the pack since version 0.45 or earlier, so it's a long-standing inclusion rather than a recent addition.[1]

The clearest view of it in this pack comes from the quest book. The basic_armor chapter has four quests, one for each elemental armor set. Each quest asks you to get the hat, robes, leggings and boots of that element.[2]

If you like picking an element and building around it, this is the mod's armor side. The quests give you a goal for each set.[2]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe the rest of the mod: its spells, mechanics, or how it connects to other mods. They also don't show where it falls in the pack's progression or on the ATM Star path, and I couldn't confirm that it appears there. I've left all of that out rather than guess.

How do you get started with Ars Elemental?

4 parts

Welcome to Ars Elemental! This mod works alongside Ars Nouveau, and in this pack its quest chapter is called basic_armor. It has one quest per element (fire, water, earth and air), and each one asks for a full set of four pieces: hat, robes, leggings and boots.[2][3]

Step 1: Get a Mark of Mastery

The Mark of Mastery is the key item for your first upgrades. The elemental armor upgrades and the major foci in this pack both consume one. The mod's own advancement text says you get it by combining the essences with the tribute.[3][4]

Unverified The crafting recipe for the Mark of Mastery was not included in the sources for this guide, so the exact method is unconfirmed here. Check it in-game with the recipe viewer. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Step 2: Pick an element and upgrade your armor

Each elemental piece is an upgrade of a base Ars Nouveau armor piece, using the matching element's essence. The four quests are a quest in "?" for fire, a quest in "?" for water, a quest in "?" for earth and a quest in "?" for air. Here is the recipe for the Pyromancer's Robes. The other pieces follow the same pattern with their own essence and slot.[2][3]

Pyromancer's RobesChanged by the pack

Armor Upgrade (ars_elemental)

Recipe id: ars_elemental:fire_robes

The other armor pieces use the same pattern with their own element and slot.

Watch out: The pack changed all of these armor upgrade recipes. Don't trust recipes from other guides or the mod's defaults. Use the recipe shown here.[3]

Which set should you choose? Each one has its own set bonus:[4]

  • Pyromancer (fire): absorbs some fire-related damage and converts it into mana, and instantly clears fire.[4]
  • Aquamancer (water): absorbs some water-related damage and converts it into mana, and refills your air if you are about to drown.[4]
  • Geomancer (earth): absorbs some earth-related damage and converts it into mana, and gives you food deep underground if you are about to starve.[4]
  • Aethermancer (air): absorbs some air-related damage and converts it into mana, and highly reduces fall damage.[4]

Step 3: Storage for your spell gear

The Trinkets Pouch is an early craft, and the mod tracks it as its own advancement. It is also the starting point for the Spellcaster Bag, so make it first.[3][4]

The Spellcaster Bag is made from the pouch, and the pack changed its recipe as well.[3]

Step 4: Work toward your focus

Once you have a spare Mark of Mastery, you can turn a lesser focus into a major one. For air, that means upgrading the Lesser Focus of Air into the Focus of Air. Earth and fire work the same way with Focus of Earth and Focus of Fire. Here is the fire version.[3][4]

How does Ars Elemental work?

5 parts

Ars Elemental doesn't add big machines or multiblocks that I can verify from the sources. Its systems are rituals, source-powered elevators and urns, the siren shrine, and elemental foci and armor. This section covers what the pack's files and the mod's text confirm for each.[4][5]

Rituals

The mod adds ritual tablets that you use with an Ars Nouveau ritual brazier. Each one runs a fixed area effect. Here are the rituals in this pack, with their ranges.[3][4]

  • Attraction makes the brazier act as a magnet for entities within 8 blocks. It won't work on players or bosses.[4]
  • Detection makes all monsters within 128 blocks glow for 10 minutes.[4]
  • Repulsion repels all mobs within 15 blocks, but not players or bosses. Augment it with a bone to repel only undead mobs.[4]
  • Fast Squirrels gives Starbuncles in the area a long speed boost and refreshes it every 30 seconds in a 15-block radius. A gold block augments the radius to 30.[4]
  • Zapping calls lightning on entities that approach the area, which is an 11x7x11 cube centered on the brazier.[4]
Watch out: The Zapping ritual targets players too if you augment it with Air Essence. Keep that in mind before building it near your base.[4]

This pack sets [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.squirrelRefreshRate]] to 600 ticks, which is the mod default and matches the 30-second refresh above.[4][5]

Source costs: elevators and the water urn

Some of the mod's blocks and items spend source. In this pack the Slipstream Current Elevator costs 10 source ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.airElevatorCost]]), the same as the mod default. The magmatic elevator ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.lavaElevatorCost]]) and the bubble elevator ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.waterElevatorCost]]) both cost 0. The water urn costs 100 source ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.waterUrnCost]]).[5]

The pack changed the recipe for Slipstream Current Elevator, so don't rely on the mod's default. This is the in-pack version:[3]

Siren shrine fishing

The siren shrine produces loot over repeated cycles, and every value below is the mod default in this pack. A siren needs 30 channels before it produces loot ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidMaxProgress]]). It consumes 1,000 source per generation ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidManaCost]]).[5]

  • Base item rolls per cycle: 1 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidBaseItems]]).[5]
  • Maximum items per cycle: 5 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidQuantityCap]]).[5]
  • Extra item rolls when the mood is high: up to 2 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidScoreBonus]]).[5]
  • Treasure chance multiplier relative to the shrine score: 0.002 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidTreasureBonus]]).[5]

Foci, armor and mana

Elemental foci discount the matching spell cost. A lesser focus applies a discount of 0.15 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_less_focus_discount]]) and a major focus applies 0.25 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_maj_focus_discount]]). Both match the mod defaults. You upgrade Lesser Focus of Air into Focus of Air with a Mark of Mastery.[3][5]

Each elemental armor piece adds 100 max mana ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Armors.armorMaxMana]]) and 4 mana regen ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Armors.armorManaRegen]]), both the mod defaults. The full sets also have set bonuses:[4][5]

  • Air: absorbs some air-related damage and converts it into mana, and highly reduces fall damage.[4]
  • Aqua: absorbs some water-related damage and converts it into mana, and refills your air if you're about to drown.[4]
  • Earth: absorbs some earth-related damage and converts it into mana, and gives food deep underground if you're about to starve.[4]
  • Fire: absorbs some fire-related damage and converts it into mana, and instantly clears fire.[4]

The pack changed the armor upgrade recipes, for example Aethermancer's Boots. Each one takes a Mark of Mastery, the matching essence, a base armor piece and a netherite ingot.[3]

Lenses, turrets and other settings

A lens can apply at most 10 Pierce to a spell in this pack ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.pierceLensLimit]], the default). You can make Advanced Spell Prism and Acceleration Prism Lens with the recipes below. Air Infused Turret is made by infusing an Enchanted Spell Turret with a Focus of Air and Air Essence.[3][5]

A few more pack settings are worth knowing. The iframe-skip glyph recipe is off (frame_skip_recipe is false). Homing is not restricted to glowing mobs ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.homing_nerf]] is false). Wandering mages do target players unless you wear the focus of their school ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mobs-Disabled.magesAggro]] is true). A flarecannon killed by its owner dies and drops its charm ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.flarecannon_owner_kill]] is true).[5]

Unverified I couldn't confirm anything from the available sources about item or fluid input and output, automation setups, or any multiblock structures in Ars Elemental. Check in-game before building automation around the mod.

How do you progress through Ars Elemental?

3 parts

In this pack, the quest book only covers the armor side of Ars Elemental. There is one chapter called "basic_armor" with four quests, one per element. Each quest asks you to hold a full four-piece set, so the armor is your first real milestone.[2]

Tier 1: elemental armor sets

Every one of these pieces is an armor upgrade of Ars Nouveau armor, and the pack changed all of those upgrade recipes. Each element uses its own essence and the item Mark of Mastery. Here is one hat per element so you can see the exact in-pack recipes. The other pieces follow the same pattern with the matching armor slot.[3]

Tip: Mark of Mastery is needed for the armor upgrades and also for upgrading the foci, so getting a steady supply of it early pays off.[3]

Tier 2: foci and infused turrets

The foci are the next step up. A lesser focus is upgraded at the enchanting apparatus into the full focus with a Mark of Mastery. For example, Lesser Focus of Fire becomes Focus of Fire. Earth and air work the same way.[3]

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

A full focus then feeds into the infused turrets, which are made by imbuement from the matching focus, the element's essence and an Enchanted Spell Turret. The sources show this for Fire Infused Turret, Earth Infused Turret and Air Infused Turret.[3]

Imbuement (ars_nouveau)

Tier 3: bangles, bags and utility items

Bangles all start from the Enchanter's Bangle, and the pack changed that recipe. From there you make the elemental versions at the enchanting apparatus, such as Fire Bangle, Earth Bangle and Air Bangle. The Anima Bangle is built on the same base.[3]

How does Ars Elemental work with other mods?

4 parts

The recipe dump shows Ars Elemental is tightly tied to Ars Nouveau. Nearly every Ars Elemental crafting path runs through Ars Nouveau's crafting types (the Enchanting Apparatus, imbuement and glyph crafting) and its essences. A few vanilla Minecraft items fill in the rest.[3]

Elemental armor

The four elemental armor sets (Fire, Water, Earth and Air) are made with Ars Elemental's armor upgrade recipe type. Each piece takes an Ars Nouveau armor piece for that slot and upgrades it using Mark of Mastery. The pack has changed all of these armor recipes, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults.[3]

Pyromancer's HatChanged by the pack

Armor Upgrade (ars_elemental)

Recipe id: ars_elemental:fire_hat

The Pyromancer's Hat as it is crafted in this pack. The other sets follow the same pattern with their own essence.

The pack's basic_armor quest chapter has one quest per set. Each quest asks you to obtain the hat, robes, leggings and boots of that element: a quest in "?" for fire, a quest in "?" for water, a quest in "?" for earth and a quest in "?" for air.[2]

Mark of Mastery itself is made at the Enchanting Apparatus. It combines Ars Elemental's ars_elemental:anima_essence with Ars Nouveau's elemental and school essences and a Wilden Tribute.[3]

Foci, threads and bangles

The lesser foci (Lesser Focus of Air, Lesser Focus of Earth, Lesser Focus of Fire and Lesser Focus of Water) are imbuement recipes that the pack has changed. Ars Nouveau uses two of them in return: the lesser air and earth foci go into ars_nouveau:thread_air_focus and ars_nouveau:thread_earth_focus. So Ars Elemental feeds back into Ars Nouveau's threads.[3]

The Enchanter's Bangle is crafted from Ars Nouveau's Ring of Potential, and the pack has changed that recipe. The Fire, Water, Earth, Air and Summoner's bangles are then built on top of the base bangle with the matching Ars Nouveau essence. The Spellcaster Bag and Enchanter's Horn are also pack-changed recipes that use Ars Nouveau items.[3]

Turrets and prisms

The Infused Turrets start from Ars Nouveau's Enchanted Spell Turret. You imbue it with the matching Ars Elemental focus and essence for Fire Infused Turret, Water Infused Turret, Earth Infused Turret and Air Infused Turret. The Manipulation Infused Turret uses Ars Nouveau's Focus of Block Shaping instead.[3]

The Advanced Spell Prism is crafted from Ars Nouveau's Spell Prism. The Acceleration Prism Lens, Deceleration Prism Lens and Piercing Prism Lens are imbued from Ars Nouveau's accelerate, decelerate and pierce glyphs.[3]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Ars Elemental?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

Ars Elemental appears in the basic_armor quest chapter of this pack. The quests here are all about the elemental armor sets: each quest asks you to hold a full set for a single element, with a hat, robes, leggings and boots.[6]

What each quest asks for

The quests have no titles in the pack files, so they are identified only by their IDs. Each is an item task that asks for the pieces of a single element's set.[6]

Since each quest lists all the pieces of its set as tasks, you will want every piece of an element's armor to complete that quest.[6]

Which Ars Elemental config options matter?

5 parts

Good news: the numeric options in this pack's Ars Elemental config match the mod's own defaults. The config file lists a mod default next to each of them, and none differ. So you can treat the numbers below as standard Ars Elemental values. The true/false toggles don't show a mod default in the file, so I can't tell you whether the pack flipped any of them.[5]

Focus discounts and armor

  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_less_focus_discount]] is 0.15, so the lesser focus discounts matching spell costs by 0.15. This is the mod default.[5]
  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_maj_focus_discount]] is 0.25 for the greater focus, also the mod default.[5]
  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Armors.armorMaxMana]] is 100 max mana per elemental armor piece, and [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Armors.armorManaRegen]] is 4 mana regen per piece. Both are mod defaults.[5]
  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Spell Foci - Abilities.glyph_empower]] and [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Spell Foci - Abilities.regen_bonus]] are both true, so glyph empowering and the regen bonus under special conditions are on.[5]

Source costs

  • The slipstream elevator uses 10 source ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.airElevatorCost]]).[5]
  • The magmatic elevator and the bubble elevator cost 0 source ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.lavaElevatorCost]] and [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.waterElevatorCost]]).[5]
  • The water urn uses 100 source ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.waterUrnCost]]).[5]

Mermaid fishing

The siren shrine settings are all at their mod defaults. Mermaids consume 1,000 source per generation ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidManaCost]]), and 30 channels must occur before a siren produces loot ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidMaxProgress]]). A shrine rolls 1 base item per cycle ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidBaseItems]]), up to 5 items ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidQuantityCap]]). A high mood can add up to 2 extra rolls ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidScoreBonus]]). The treasure chance multiplier is 0.002 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidTreasureBonus]]).[5]

Misc options

  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.pierceLensLimit]] is 10, the most pierce a lens can add to a spell. [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.squirrelRefreshRate]] is 600 ticks for the Squirrel Ritual buff. Both are mod defaults.[5]
  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.extra_biomes]] is 0, so the extra archwood forests with specific trees are not enabled.[5]
  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.homing_nerf]] is false, so homing is not restricted to glowing mobs.[5]
  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.always_thunder]] is true, so lightning keeps crashing often in the flashing archwood biomes. Set it to false if you want that gone.[5]
  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mobs-Disabled.magesAggro]] is true. Wandering mages will target you unless you wear the focus of the same school.[5]
  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.flarecannon_owner_kill]] is true, so a flarecannon killed by its owner dies and drops the charm instead of deactivating. [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.soulbound_loot]] is true, so soulbound can show up in randomly enchanted loot chests.[5]
  • frame_skip_recipe is false, so the iframe skip glyph recipe is disabled in this pack.[5]

Client visuals

Both visual options are on: [[config:config/ars_elemental-client.toml#Visual Configs.Enable BlackBookTexture]] gives the spell book its black texture while upgraded, and [[config:config/ars_elemental-client.toml#Visual Configs.Enable SpellFocusRender]] renders the spell focus while you have it equipped.[7]

Unverified The pack also sets the four focus amplify options to 1 and the four focus dampening options to -1 (one per element: air, earth, fire, water). The config file gives no description for these, so what they do exactly is unverified.
