What is Ars Elemental?

Ars Elemental is part of this pack, and you'll find version 1.21.0-0.7.0.5 of it in your mods folder (file ars_elemental-1.21.0-0.7.0.5.jar).[1]

It isn't a new addition. It was already in the pack by version 0.45 or earlier, so it has been around for a while.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what Ars Elemental adds, who it suits best, or where it fits in the pack's progression. There is also no confirmed information on pack-specific recipe or config changes, on quests that involve it, or on whether it sits on the ATM Star path, so I'm not guessing at any of that. Check the later sections of this guide for anything that has been verified.

How do you get started with Ars Elemental?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

Welcome to Ars Elemental! This mod works alongside Ars Nouveau, and in this pack its quest chapter is called basic_armor. It has one quest per element (fire, water, earth and air), and each one asks for a full set of four pieces: hat, robes, leggings and boots.[2][3]

Step 1: Get a Mark of Mastery

The Mark of Mastery is the key item for your first upgrades. The elemental armor upgrades and the major foci in this pack both consume one. The mod's own advancement text says you get it by combining the essences with the tribute.[3][4]

Unverified The crafting recipe for the Mark of Mastery was not included in the sources for this guide, so the exact method is unconfirmed here. Check it in-game with the recipe viewer. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Step 2: Pick an element and upgrade your armor

Each elemental piece is an upgrade of a base Ars Nouveau armor piece, using the matching element's essence. The four quests are a quest in "?" for fire, a quest in "?" for water, a quest in "?" for earth and a quest in "?" for air. Here is the recipe for the Pyromancer's Robes. The other pieces follow the same pattern with their own essence and slot.[2][3]

Pyromancer's RobesChanged by the pack

Armor Upgrade (ars_elemental)

Recipe id: ars_elemental:fire_robes

The other armor pieces use the same pattern with their own element and slot.

Watch out: The pack changed all of these armor upgrade recipes. Don't trust recipes from other guides or the mod's defaults. Use the recipe shown here.[3]

Which set should you choose? Each one has its own set bonus:[4]

  • Pyromancer (fire): absorbs some fire-related damage and converts it into mana, and instantly clears fire.[4]
  • Aquamancer (water): absorbs some water-related damage and converts it into mana, and refills your air if you are about to drown.[4]
  • Geomancer (earth): absorbs some earth-related damage and converts it into mana, and gives you food deep underground if you are about to starve.[4]
  • Aethermancer (air): absorbs some air-related damage and converts it into mana, and highly reduces fall damage.[4]

Step 3: Storage for your spell gear

The Trinkets Pouch is an early craft, and the mod tracks it as its own advancement. It is also the starting point for the Spellcaster Bag, so make it first.[3][4]

The Spellcaster Bag is made from the pouch, and the pack changed its recipe as well.[3]

Step 4: Work toward your focus

Once you have a spare Mark of Mastery, you can turn a lesser focus into a major one. For air, that means upgrading the Lesser Focus of Air into the Focus of Air. Earth and fire work the same way with Focus of Earth and Focus of Fire. Here is the fire version.[3][4]

How does Ars Elemental work?

6 parts

Ars Elemental is mostly a spellcasting add-on, so its "machines" are rituals, elevators, shrines and gear rather than power cables and pipes. The sources I have don't describe any multiblock layouts or item and fluid automation, so I'm sticking to what is confirmed. That covers the foci, the armor, the rituals, the source-powered blocks and a few spell tweaks.[5][6]

Foci and spell cost discounts

Foci make spells of their element cheaper. This pack's config sets the discount for a lesser focus at [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_less_focus_discount]] = 0.15 and for a major focus at [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_maj_focus_discount]] = 0.25. The major focus gives the bigger discount. Both options accept values from 0.0 to 0.99.[6]

To get from the lesser Lesser Focus of Air to the full Focus of Air, you use the Enchanting Apparatus:[7]

Focus of AirMod recipe

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: ars_elemental:air_focus

Focus abilities such as glyph empowering ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Spell Foci - Abilities.glyph_empower]]) and the special-condition regen bonus ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Spell Foci - Abilities.regen_bonus]]) are both enabled here.[6]

Elemental armor

Each elemental set absorbs some damage of its element and turns it into mana, and each set adds its own extra. Air armor such as Aethermancer's Robes also greatly reduces fall damage. Aqua armor such as Aquamancer's Hat refills your air when you're about to drown. Earth armor gives food deep underground when you're about to starve. Fire armor instantly clears fire.[5]

In this pack every armor piece adds 100 max mana ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Armors.armorMaxMana]]) and 4 mana regen ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Armors.armorManaRegen]]).[6]

The armor upgrade recipes for the Aethermancer and Aquamancer pieces are listed as changed by the pack, so don't rely on mod defaults you may remember. Here is the boots recipe:[7]

Rituals

Ars Elemental adds ritual tablets that you run on a brazier. Here is what the sources say each one does:[5]

  • Attraction: makes the brazier act as a magnet for entities within 8 blocks. It won't work on players or bosses.[5]
  • Detection: makes all monsters within 128 blocks glow for 10 minutes.[5]
  • Repulsion: repels all mobs within 15 blocks. Augment it with a bone to repel only undead. It won't work on players or bosses.[5]
  • Fast Squirrels: gives Starbuncles in a 15-block radius a long speed boost, refreshed every 30 seconds. A gold block augments the radius to 30.[5]
  • Zapping: calls lightning on entities that approach the area, an 11x7x11 cube centered on the brazier. Augment it with Air Essence and it will target players too.[5]

The squirrel buff refresh is configurable. [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.squirrelRefreshRate]] is set to 600 ticks, which matches the 30 seconds above.[5][6]

Elevators and the water urn

These blocks consume source, and the pack sets the costs. The Slipstream Current Elevator costs 10 source ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.airElevatorCost]]). The magmatic and bubble elevators cost 0, and the water urn costs 100 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.waterUrnCost]]). The Slipstream Current Elevator recipe is changed by the pack:[6][7]

Siren shrines (mermaid fishing)

A siren shrine produces loot once enough channels have occurred. In this pack that takes 30 channels ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidMaxProgress]]), and each generation consumes 1,000 source ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidManaCost]]).[6]

Each cycle starts with 1 item roll. A high mood can add up to 2 extra rolls, and a shrine can produce at most 5 items per cycle. The chance of treasure scales with the shrine's score using a multiplier of 0.002.[6]

Spell and world tweaks

  • A lens can apply at most 10 Pierce to a spell ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.pierceLensLimit]]).[6]
  • The homing nerf, which would limit homing to glowing mobs, is off ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.homing_nerf]] = false).[6]
  • The iframe skip glyph recipe is disabled (frame_skip_recipe = false).[6]
  • Lightning keeps crashing often in flashing archwood biomes, because [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.always_thunder]] is true.[6]
  • Wandering mages target players too, unless you wear the focus of their school ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mobs-Disabled.magesAggro]] = true).[6]
Tip: Before you fight wandering mages, wear the focus of the same school as the mage. With the pack's setting they leave you alone if you do.[6]

How do you progress through Ars Elemental?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

In this pack, the quest book only covers the armor side of Ars Elemental. There is one chapter called "basic_armor" with four quests, one per element. Each quest asks you to hold a full four-piece set, so the armor is your first real milestone.[2]

Tier 1: elemental armor sets

Every one of these pieces is an armor upgrade of Ars Nouveau armor, and the pack changed all of those upgrade recipes. Each element uses its own essence and the item Mark of Mastery. Here is one hat per element so you can see the exact in-pack recipes. The other pieces follow the same pattern with the matching armor slot.[3]

Tip: Mark of Mastery is needed for the armor upgrades and also for upgrading the foci, so getting a steady supply of it early pays off.[3]

Tier 2: foci and infused turrets

The foci are the next step up. A lesser focus is upgraded at the enchanting apparatus into the full focus with a Mark of Mastery. For example, Lesser Focus of Fire becomes Focus of Fire. Earth and air work the same way.[3]

Focus of FireMod recipe

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: ars_elemental:fire_focus

A full focus then feeds into the infused turrets, which are made by imbuement from the matching focus, the element's essence and an Enchanted Spell Turret. The sources show this for Fire Infused Turret, Earth Infused Turret and Air Infused Turret.[3]

Imbuement (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: ars_elemental:fire_turret

Tier 3: bangles, bags and utility items

Bangles all start from the Enchanter's Bangle, and the pack changed that recipe. From there you make the elemental versions at the enchanting apparatus, such as Fire Bangle, Earth Bangle and Air Bangle. The Anima Bangle is built on the same base.[3]

Enchanter's BangleChanged by the pack

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

Storage follows a similar chain. You craft the Trinkets Pouch first, then upgrade it into the Spellcaster Bag. The pack changed the Spellcaster Bag recipe too.[3]

How does Ars Elemental work with other mods?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

The recipe dump shows Ars Elemental is tightly tied to Ars Nouveau. Nearly every Ars Elemental crafting path runs through Ars Nouveau's crafting types (the Enchanting Apparatus, imbuement and glyph crafting) and its essences. A few vanilla Minecraft items fill in the rest.[3]

Elemental armor

The four elemental armor sets (Fire, Water, Earth and Air) are made with Ars Elemental's armor upgrade recipe type. Each piece takes an Ars Nouveau armor piece for that slot and upgrades it using Mark of Mastery. The pack has changed all of these armor recipes, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults.[3]

Pyromancer's HatChanged by the pack

Armor Upgrade (ars_elemental)

Recipe id: ars_elemental:fire_hat

The Pyromancer's Hat as it is crafted in this pack. The other sets follow the same pattern with their own essence.

The pack's basic_armor quest chapter has one quest per set. Each quest asks you to obtain the hat, robes, leggings and boots of that element: a quest in "?" for fire, a quest in "?" for water, a quest in "?" for earth and a quest in "?" for air.[2]

Mark of Mastery itself is made at the Enchanting Apparatus. It combines Ars Elemental's ars_elemental:anima_essence with Ars Nouveau's elemental and school essences and a Wilden Tribute.[3]

Foci, threads and bangles

The lesser foci (Lesser Focus of Air, Lesser Focus of Earth, Lesser Focus of Fire and Lesser Focus of Water) are imbuement recipes that the pack has changed. Ars Nouveau uses two of them in return: the lesser air and earth foci go into ars_nouveau:thread_air_focus and ars_nouveau:thread_earth_focus. So Ars Elemental feeds back into Ars Nouveau's threads.[3]

The Enchanter's Bangle is crafted from Ars Nouveau's Ring of Potential, and the pack has changed that recipe. The Fire, Water, Earth, Air and Summoner's bangles are then built on top of the base bangle with the matching Ars Nouveau essence. The Spellcaster Bag and Enchanter's Horn are also pack-changed recipes that use Ars Nouveau items.[3]

Turrets and prisms

The Infused Turrets start from Ars Nouveau's Enchanted Spell Turret. You imbue it with the matching Ars Elemental focus and essence for Fire Infused Turret, Water Infused Turret, Earth Infused Turret and Air Infused Turret. The Manipulation Infused Turret uses Ars Nouveau's Focus of Block Shaping instead.[3]

The Advanced Spell Prism is crafted from Ars Nouveau's Spell Prism. The Acceleration Prism Lens, Deceleration Prism Lens and Piercing Prism Lens are imbued from Ars Nouveau's accelerate, decelerate and pierce glyphs.[3]

Which Ars Elemental config options matter?

5 parts

Here are the Ars Elemental settings you're most likely to care about, exactly as this pack sets them. The sources only show this pack's values, not the mod's own defaults. So I can't tell you which of these the pack changed, and I won't guess.[6]

Focus discounts and armor

  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_less_focus_discount]] is 0.15. It sets how much the lesser focus discounts matching spell costs.[6]
  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_maj_focus_discount]] is 0.25. That's the same idea for the greater focus.[6]
  • Each elemental armor piece gives a max mana bonus of 100 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Armors.armorMaxMana]]) and a mana regen bonus of 4 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Armors.armorManaRegen]]).[6]
  • Glyph empowering ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Spell Foci - Abilities.glyph_empower]]) and the special-conditions regen bonus ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Elemental Spell Foci - Abilities.regen_bonus]]) are both enabled.[6]

Source costs and mermaid fishing

  • The slipstream elevator uses 10 source ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.airElevatorCost]]). The magmatic and bubble elevators cost 0 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.lavaElevatorCost]], [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.waterElevatorCost]]). The water urn uses 100 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Source cost.waterUrnCost]]).[6]
  • Mermaids consume 1,000 source per generation ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidManaCost]]). Thirty channels must occur before a siren produces loot ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidMaxProgress]]).[6]
  • A shrine rolls 1 base item per cycle ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidBaseItems]]) and can produce at most 5 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidQuantityCap]]). A high mood adds up to 2 extra rolls ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidScoreBonus]]). The treasure chance multiplier is 0.002 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mermaid Fishing.mermaidTreasureBonus]]).[6]

Misc gameplay options

  • [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.homing_nerf]] is false, so homing isn't limited to glowing mobs.[6]
  • Pierce lenses can apply at most 10 pierce to a spell ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.pierceLensLimit]]).[6]
  • The Squirrel Ritual buff refreshes every 600 ticks ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.squirrelRefreshRate]]).[6]
  • Wandering mages target players too, unless you wear the focus of their school ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Mobs-Disabled.magesAggro]] is true).[6]
  • The iframe skip glyph recipe is turned off (frame_skip_recipe is false).[6]
  • Also left on: [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.always_thunder]], [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.soulbound_loot]] and [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.flarecannon_owner_kill]]. [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.Misc.extra_biomes]] is 0, so the extra archwood forests stay off.[6]

Glyph settings

Watch out: The Nullify Defense glyph is disabled in this pack (general.enabled is false). Its config shows a cost of 1,000 and tier 3, but you can't use it here.[8]

Visual options

Both client options are on. [[config:config/ars_elemental-client.toml#Visual Configs.Enable BlackBookTexture]] gives the upgraded spell book its black texture, and [[config:config/ars_elemental-client.toml#Visual Configs.Enable SpellFocusRender]] renders your focus while you wear it.[27]

Unverified The focus amplify values (1 for air, earth, fire and water) and dampening values (-1 for each) appear in the common config without any description. What they do in this pack is unconfirmed.
