What is Silent Gear?

1 part

Silent Gear is all about building your own tools, weapons and armor, which the mod calls "gear". Each piece is assembled from parts, and each part is made from a material. Those materials include the vanilla ones plus Silent Gear's own crimson steel, azure electrum and tyrian steel. This pack ships Silent Gear 4.0.25.[1][2]

It's for you if you like tuning your equipment instead of grabbing the next vanilla tier. Blueprints (reusable) and templates (single use) are required for gear. Almost all recipes are shapeless and work in a normal crafting grid, and JEI is the place to check any recipe you're unsure about.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack gives Silent Gear its own quest chapter. It's a good map of how the pack expects you to move through the mod, from repairs and blueprints to the material grader, alloys and the late-game metals.[3]

  1. Start with repairs. a quest in "?" accepts any one of the five repair kits: Very Crude Repair Kit, Crude Repair Kit, Sturdy Repair Kit, Crimson Repair Kit or Azure Repair Kit.[3]
  2. Collect blueprints. Quests for the Coating Blueprint, Lining Blueprint, Binding Blueprint, Fletching Blueprint, Mace Blueprint, Elytra Blueprint and Grip Blueprint all unlock from the same earlier quest.[3]
  3. Get the Salvager (a quest in "?"). It leads on to the Recrystallizer and the Material Grader.[3]
  4. The Material Grader quest unlocks the Alloy Forge and the three dusts Glowing Dust, Blazing Dust and Glittery Dust. In the mod's default setup these are the grader's catalysts, tiers 1, 2 and 3, and higher tiers tend to give better grades.[1][3]
  5. The Alloy Forge leads to the Starlight Charger. After that come Starmetal Dust, Azure Silver Dust, Blaze Gold Dust, Block of Azure Electrum, Block of Tyrian Steel and four Block of Crimson Steel.[3]

The pack's farming chapter also has a quest that accepts Flax Seeds, alongside flax seeds from other mods.[4]

Unverified The sources I have don't show whether the pack changes any Silent Gear recipes or configs from the mod's defaults. The general mechanics above come from the mod's project page, so check JEI in-game for the exact recipes in this pack. This site does hold All the Mods 10: To the Sky's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you get started with Silent Gear?

5 parts

Silent Gear is all about tools, weapons and armor, which the mod calls "gear". Blueprints and templates are essential for crafting any gear item, so that's where you start. Here's the order I'd follow in this pack.[1]

Step one: blueprint paper

Your first item is Blueprint Paper. Many of the blueprint recipes in this pack use it, so make a few.[5]

Crafting Shapeless

  • any paper
  • any paper
  • any paper

Step two: your first blueprint or template

A blueprint can be reused infinitely, while a template is consumed after one use. They are identical otherwise. A good first pick is the Axe Blueprint.[1]

Axe BlueprintMod recipe

Crafting Shaped

If you'd rather skip paper for now, the Axe Template is made from template boards instead. Template boards are crafted from a log and a knife or dagger.[5][6]

To turn a blueprint into a tool, combine it with enough materials of the same type to make the main part, such as a tool head. Then craft that part with a rod. A plain stick works if you have nothing better.[1]

Tip: Most vanilla items can be converted into a Silent Gear equivalent by placing them alone in a crafting grid. Check JEI if you are unsure of a recipe.[1]

Step three: a repair kit

Make a Very Crude Repair Kit early. You fill a repair kit by crafting it with materials, and empty it with a stick. Then you craft it with a gear item to repair that item. A quest in the Silent Gear chapter, a quest in "?", accepts any of the five repair kit tiers.[3][5][6]

Step four: the blueprint book

Once you have a few blueprints, the Blueprint Book keeps them in one place. It stores blueprints and acts like them.[5][6]

Step five: salvager, grader and forge

In the quest book's Silent Gear chapter, the Salvager quest (a quest in "?") sits at the same level as the blueprint quests. The salvager can break down some items into their components.[3][5][6]

The Material Grader quest (a quest in "?") follows the salvager. The grader improves materials and gives you a tier 1 catalyst, Glowing Dust. Its recipe needs an Advanced Upgrade Base, which in turn is made from an Upgrade Base.[3][5][6]

After the grader, the quest book moves on to the Alloy Forge (a quest in "?"). The Starlight Charger (a quest in "?") comes after that, and it leads into the metal quests for azure silver, blaze gold, crimson steel and more.[3][5]

How does Silent Gear work?

6 parts

Silent Gear is built around "gear": tools, weapons and armor made from parts, and parts made from materials. Most of the mod's machines exist to improve or combine those materials. This section covers how that flow works, as far as the sources explain it.[1]

Crafting gear from parts

Every gear item needs a main part, and blueprints or templates are essential for crafting it. A blueprint can be reused infinitely, while a template is consumed after one use. They are otherwise identical.[1]

For tools and melee weapons, you combine the blueprint with the right number of materials to make the main part, like a head or blade. The materials must all be the same type, though they can have different grades. You then craft the main part with a rod. The mod's own text says a plain stick works if you have nothing better, and you can also make rods from a rod blueprint.[1]

Ranged weapons and fishing rods also need a cord, and you add the cord and the rod at the same time. Armor only needs a main part, called plates, and you can optionally add a lining. There is no quick recipe for armor, so craft the plates first and then craft the plates into armor.[1]

Elytra need wings as the main part plus a binding. The wings only accept materials in the "cloth" and "sheet" categories, and that includes sheet metal made in the Metal Press. Curios like rings and bracelets need jeweler's tools too. Their main part only accepts metal materials.[1][6]

You can also convert most vanilla items by putting them alone in a crafting grid. In this pack, a diamond shovel converts into its separate parts, like this:[1][5]

ShovelMod recipe

Conversion (silentgear)

Recipe id: silentgear:gear/convert/diamond_shovel

Grades and the Material Grader

Grades are material modifiers that apply an extra multiplier to some, but not all, stats. From lowest to highest they are E, D, C, B, A, S, SS, SSS and MAX. You grade materials in the Material Grader, which uses up one catalyst per grading attempt. Grades are assigned randomly, following a normal distribution.[1][6]

The catalyst tier sets the average grade, so higher tiers are more likely to give better results. By default there are three catalysts: glowing dust (tier 1), blazing dust (tier 2) and glittery dust (tier 3). The Material Grader screen shows the catalyst tier. Crafting the grader also gives you a tier 1 catalyst.[1][6]

You can put an already graded material back in to re-grade it. A higher roll replaces the old grade. If the roll is the same or lower, nothing changes, but the catalyst is still consumed.[1]

Tip: A re-grade that rolls the same grade or lower leaves the material as it was, but the catalyst is still consumed. Higher tier catalysts are more likely to give better grades, so save them for materials you really care about.[1]

Making alloys

Some blocks combine materials into compound items, which the community calls alloys. They can combine up to four materials into one compound. You place two or more unique, simple (not compound) materials in the input slots, then toggle the "Work" button when you like the result preview. The pack's language file lists the Alloy Forge, which makes alloys of specific materials, and a Super Mixer, which makes alloys of any material. The Recrystallizer and Refabricator are also listed, and the mod's project page groups both with the alloy-making blocks.[1][6]

The Alloy Forge is a mid-game block, so you can't expect to craft it right away. This is its recipe in the pack:[1][5]

Alloy ForgeMod recipe

Crafting Shaped

Recipe id: silentgear:alloy_forge

Starlight Charger and Salvager

The Starlight Charger gains charge when exposed to starlight. Its screen also shows a Structure Level, and it can take up to 30 seconds to update. It applies the Star Charged enchantment to material items, which enhances their stats substantially.[6]

The Salvager can break down some items into their components, which is handy when you don't need old gear anymore.[6]

Repairing

You can't repair gear by crafting two similar items together. Repair kits let you do quick repairs in any crafting grid. You can fill the kit with materials ahead of time, or put the gear, the kit and the materials into the grid together. The material's tier must be the same or higher than the tier of the gear's primary part.[1]

Pack changes to casting

The pack adds metal casting routes for some Silent Gear items, and some are marked as changed by the pack. These cover the Azure Electrum Ingot, the Block of Azure Electrum and Arrow Heads. Here are the in-pack casting recipes:[5]

Unverified The sources do not explain power or fluid requirements, item automation (hoppers, pipes, which slots or sides machines accept) or machine speeds for Silent Gear's blocks, and this pack has no config files for the mod. Check the machines in-game or in JEI before building automation around them. How do you progress through Silent Gear?

4 parts

Silent Gear progression in this pack is driven by a single quest chapter. It starts with repair kits and blueprints, moves through the crafting machines, and ends in the alloy metals. The chapter is mostly a straight chain, so you can follow it quest by quest and craft each unlock with the in-pack recipes shown below.[3]

Step 1: Repair kits

Quest a quest in "?" accepts any one of five repair kits: Very Crude Repair Kit, Crude Repair Kit, Sturdy Repair Kit, Crimson Repair Kit or Azure Repair Kit. The quest file lists them from the lowest kit to the highest, and any single one completes it. The chapter file shows no prerequisite quest for it.[3]

Here are the in-pack recipes for each kit, so you can pick the one that fits your current progress.[5]

Step 2: Blueprints and the Salvager

The rest of the chapter branches off a parent quest (711826BBCA832EE2) that isn't part of the chapter data I have. Eight quests hang directly off it: the coating blueprint (a quest in "?"), lining blueprint (a quest in "?"), binding blueprint (a quest in "?"), fletching blueprint (a quest in "?"), mace blueprint (a quest in "?"), elytra blueprint (a quest in "?"), grip blueprint (a quest in "?") and the Salvager (a quest in "?").[3]

The blueprint recipes in the pack are built around Blueprint Paper, so craft that first.[5]

How does Silent Gear work with other mods?

5 parts

Silent Gear doesn't live on its own in this pack. A bunch of pack-added and pack-changed recipes link its wood, raw metals, ingots and gear parts to other mods. Here's where they meet.[5]

Netherwood processing

Netherwood works with several wood-processing mods. The pack adds a Mekanism sawing recipe and a Productive Trees sawmill recipe for Netherwood Planks, both shown below. The Mekanism one also produces Sawdust.[5]

Raw metals from bees

Productive Bees can supply Silent Gear's raw metals through the centrifuge. The pack changed the recipes for Raw Azure Silver and Raw Crimson Iron, shown below, and both also yield Wax. The recipe ids point to honeycomb as the source, but the recipe data doesn't list any input items.[5]

      Casting metals with Productive Metalworks

The pack changed Productive Metalworks casting so you can make Silent Gear ingots and nuggets from molten metal. It covers azure electrum, azure silver, blaze gold, crimson iron, crimson steel and tyrian steel. Ingots use an Ingot Cast and nuggets use a Nugget Cast.[5]

      Casting gear parts

The sgearmetalworks namespace connects Silent Gear parts to Productive Metalworks casting. The pack changed these recipes. A Silent Gear part can be cast with molten steel into a cast, such as the Sword Cast, and that cast can then be turned back into the part, such as the Sword Blade. The pack has matching recipes for most part types, including tool heads, armor plates, bow limbs, rings and necklaces, and even the Tool Rod and Tip Upgrade.[5]

There is also a set of uru metal recipes, which are regular mod recipes rather than pack changes. They use a Tyrian Steel Ingot and molten uru metal to produce an Uru Metal Ingot together with a Silent Gear part. The ones shown here cover Arrow Heads, Axe Head, Boot Plates, Bow Limbs, Bracelet Band, Chestplate Plates and Crossbow Limbs.[5]

      Quests

Most of the Silent Gear quest chapter only asks for Silent Gear items, like repair kits, blueprints, the Alloy Forge and metal blocks, so it doesn't push you into other mods.[3]

The one cross-mod quest is a quest in "?" in the food and farming chapter. It accepts flax seeds from several mods, and Flax Seeds is one of the options.[4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Silent Gear?

      4 parts

Silent Gear has its own quest chapter in the pack, called silent_gear. It also shows up in one quest in the food and farming chapter. The chapter is mostly an item-collection line: you get an item, and that unlocks the next one.[3][4]

      The silent_gear chapter, in order

The chapter starts with a quest in "?". It has no prerequisite listed, and it accepts any one of the five repair kits: Very Crude Repair Kit, Crude Repair Kit, Sturdy Repair Kit, Crimson Repair Kit or Azure Repair Kit.[3]

Most of the other quests hang off a shared prerequisite quest that isn't part of the quest data I have, so I can't tell you what it asks for. Once it's done, these open up:[3]

      After the Salvager

Finishing the Salvager quest opens two quests: a quest in "?" for the Recrystallizer and a quest in "?" for the Material Grader.[3]

The Material Grader quest opens four more. a quest in "?" asks for Blazing Dust. a quest in "?" asks for Glowing Dust. a quest in "?" asks for Glittery Dust. a quest in "?" asks for the Alloy Forge.[3]

      After the Alloy Forge

The Alloy Forge quest leads to a quest in "?", which asks for the Starlight Charger. That quest is the last gate in the chapter and opens six quests:[3]

      Food and farming chapter

Silent Gear also appears in a quest in "?" in the food_and_farming chapter. It accepts flax seeds from several mods, including Flax Seeds, so Silent Gear's seeds are one of several ways to complete it. It comes after another quest in that chapter that isn't part of the data I have.[4]

What changed in Silent Gear between versions?

      1 part

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 ships Silent Gear 4.0.25, and the pack has included Silent Gear since 1.0 or earlier. The mod's own changelog for that build is the record of what changed.[2]

      Silent Gear 4.0.25 (2025-07-12)

This build is for Minecraft 1.21.1. It adds a new trait effect and a new trait, and it fixes a crash and a broken trait.[7]

      • Added: a new trait effect called "silentgear:negates_damage". On armor, it reduces the damage you take from specific damage types, which are determined by a tag.[7]
      • Added: the Heat-Resistant trait. It reduces fire damage (fire, lava, magma and so on) and stops the item from being destroyed by fire when dropped. It was added to crimson iron.[7]
      • Fixed: a crash when logging in with items that have traits that no longer exist.[7]
      • Fixed: the Bounce trait now bounces you when you land after falling more than 3 blocks, as originally intended.[7]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Silent Gear were available, so any pack-specific changes between pack releases are unverified here.
