What is Extended AE?

1 part

Extended AE is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2 that streamlines storage and crafting workflows. This pack includes version 1.21-2.2.30-neoforge.[1][2]

It's for you once you have an ME network running and want bigger, faster versions of the AE2 basics. The ME Extended Pattern Provider has 36 pattern slots, 4 times as many as an ordinary Pattern Provider. The ME Extended Export Bus and ME Extended Import Bus work about 8x faster than the regular ones and support more upgrades.[3]

Where it fits in the pack

Everything starts with Entro Crystals. The quest "The Crystals of Space and Time: Entro Crystals" quest has you right-click a Fluix Block with an Entro Seed to make Budding Entroized Fluix. It grows Entro Buds like Budding Certus Quartz does, but its decay is inevitable. You harvest Entro Crystal from it, the main crafting ingredient for most of the mod's items and machines.[3][4]

Next comes the Crystal Assembler ("Complex Crafter: The Crystal Assembler" quest). Most extended devices are too complex for a crafting table, so this is where you build them. It also handles some in-world transformation recipes and assembles processors 4 at a time.[3][5]

Once you have the Crystal Assembler, these quests open up:[3]

The Infinity Cells quest ("More Resources than you ever need: Infinity Cells" quest) is where this pack goes beyond the mod. The mod's own highlights list water and cobblestone cells, but the quest also accepts a long list of kubejs cells, including lava, dirt and sand, next to Infinity Water Cell and Infinity Cobblestone Cell.[1][3]

For big autocrafting setups, look at the Assembler Matrix ("Many Assemblers In One: The Assembler Matrix" quest). It's a rectangular multiblock with edges between 3 and 7 blocks long. Each Assembler Matrix Pattern Core gives 36 pattern slots, and each Assembler Matrix Craft Core can run 8 crafting jobs at once.[7]

How do you get started with Extended AE?

4 parts

Extended AE builds on Applied Energistics 2, and nearly everything in it starts from one resource: the Entro Crystal. So your first job in this pack is to get Entro Crystals flowing, then build the machine that turns them into every other Extended AE device.[3][4]

Step 1: Get Entro Crystals

Start with the Entro Seed. Craft one, then right-click a Fluix Block with it. The block becomes Budding Entroized Fluix, which grows Entro Buds around it much like Budding Certus Quartz. The quest "The Crystals of Space and Time: Entro Crystals" quest walks you through this.[3][8][9]

Unlike Certus, this budding block always decays eventually. It always drops one Entro Dust when you break it, whatever state it is in. Buds that aren't fully grown drop Entro Shard instead, and 8 Shards can be crafted back into a crystal.[3][10][11]

The pack also changes one recipe that makes Entro Crystals: a reaction recipe that uses Entro Dust. It is a good way to put leftover dust to use.[12]

Step 2: Build the Crystal Assembler

Most Extended AE devices are too complex for a crafting table. You need the Crystal Assembler for them, and it is also the next quest in the chain, "Complex Crafter: The Crystal Assembler" quest. This one is made in a normal crafting grid.[3][5][12]

Watch out: The face of the Crystal Assembler that has a screen can't connect to an ME network, so place it with another side facing your cable or interface.[3][5]

Step 3: Your first Extended devices

Once the Crystal Assembler is running, a lot of quests open up. A good first pick is the ME Extended Pattern Provider, which has 36 pattern slots, 4 times as many as an ordinary Pattern Provider. Pair it with the ME Extended Pattern Access Terminal, which adds better pattern search, pattern highlighting and in-world highlighting of stuck providers.[3][13]

If the normal Inscriber feels slow, make the Circuit Slicer. It slices material blocks straight into processor prints, up to 9 circuits at a time. The pack adds a second recipe for it that uses a universal press, so you have two ways to make it.[3][12][14]

Where to go next

The quest "Faster and Bigger: Extended Devices" quest covers the faster and bigger versions of AE2 devices, and the Assembler Matrix quest "Many Assemblers In One: The Assembler Matrix" quest unlocks after it. The Assembler Matrix is a multiblock from 3x3x3 up to 7x7x7 that runs many crafting jobs through a single channel.[3][7]

How does Extended AE work?

6 parts

Extended AE is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2, so everything here plugs into your normal ME network. Most of its machines are either bigger versions of AE2 devices or parallel crafters that save you channels and time. Here is how the main systems behave in this pack.[1]

Assembler Matrix (the multiblock)

The Assembler Matrix is the mod's multiblock. It can run a lot of crafting jobs at the same time and saves channels. The shape is a rectangular prism with edge lengths between 3 and 7. The edges use Assembler Matrix Frame, the faces use Assembler Matrix Wall or Assembler Matrix Glass, and the interior holds pattern, craft and speed cores.[7]

A valid matrix must contain at least one pattern core and craft core. It must be completely filled and can't be hollow. When it is correctly formed and powered, the lines on the frame turn blue, which is your quick check that it works. Right-click a formed, online matrix to open its GUI, where you can put in or search patterns and see how many jobs it is running.[7]

  • Pattern Core: the matrix only takes patterns from its pattern cores, and each one gives 36 pattern slots.[7]
  • Craft Core: the matrix hands incoming crafting jobs to its craft cores, and each one runs 8 jobs at the same time.[7]
  • Speed Core: 5 speed cores give full speed, and extra ones past 5 add nothing.[7]

The pack changed the recipes for the frame, wall and glass, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. The recipes below are the ones used in this pack.[12]

Crafting and processing machines

The Crystal Assembler crafts most of the mod's extended devices, because they are too complex for a crafting table. It can also do certain in-world transformation recipes, such as fluix transformation. Its screen face can't connect to the network.[5]

  • Extended Molecular Assembler runs 8 crafting jobs at once and is 2x faster than the normal Molecular Assembler. You can't put a pattern into it directly.[16]
  • Extended Inscriber runs 4 inscribing jobs at once. It has a button to change its max stack size, and setting that to 1 is suggested when you use it with automation to avoid possible issues.[17]
  • Circuit Slicer slices material blocks straight into processor prints, and is 9x faster than the inscriber at most times. Glass faces without a port can't connect to the network.[14]
  • ME Extended IO Port works 8x faster than the normal IO Port and has more upgrade slots.[18]
  • Extended Charger can charge 4 items at the same time.[19]

Storage, interfaces and pattern handling

  • ME Extended Pattern Provider is a Pattern Provider with a larger pattern inventory, so you can keep all your patterns in one block instead of building subnets.[20]
  • ME Extended Interface is an Interface with a larger config inventory.[21]
  • ME Oversize Interface has the same number of slots as a normal interface, but each slot holds x16 more items, so 1,024 (64x16) per slot. The multiplier is configurable, and certain items from other mods can have their own multiplier. The pack ships no config file for this mod, so I can't confirm whether the pack changes it.[22]
  • ME Extended Drive is a Drive with a larger cell inventory that holds 20 storage cells.[23]
  • ME Ingredient Buffer is a storage block that holds 36 types of anything, from items to fluids.[24]

To swap your existing AE2 devices for the extended versions without breaking them, use the upgrade items. Sneak and right-click the device, and it becomes its extended version with all settings and inventory kept. This covers pattern providers, interfaces, import/export buses, the pattern access terminal and drives.[25]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: extendedae:ex_pattern_provider_upgrade

The ME Extended Pattern Access Terminal adds searching by input or output ingredient names. It can also highlight a matched pattern in the GUI, and highlight a Pattern Provider in the world, which helps when you need to find a stuck provider during a big crafting job.[13]

Item and fluid I/O

The ME Extended Import Bus and ME Extended Export Bus work faster than the normal buses and have more upgrade slots. The default speed multiplier is 8 and it is configurable, so I can't confirm the pack's value.[26]

The specialized buses give you more precise automation:[27][28][29][30][31][32][33]

The ME Threshold Level Emitter works like a set/reset latch. With a lower threshold of 100 and an upper of 150, it turns on once the amount goes over 150. It stays on while the amount falls, and only turns off when it drops below 100.[34]

The ME Active Formation Plane places blocks or drops items, and the ME Smart Annihilation Plane breaks blocks or absorbs items based on its config inventory. Neither needs a subnet.[6][35]

The ME Canner fills containers: the first slot holds what to fill with and the second holds the container to fill. It costs 80 AE per operation and only fills fluids by default. Other kinds need addons, namely Applied Flux, Applied Mekanistics or Applied Botanics Addon. I can't confirm from the sources which of these are in this pack.[36]

Only its top and bottom sides accept energy and connect to the network. For autocrafting, the pattern should contain only the thing to fill and the container to fill. The Canner auto-ejects the finished item. To drain containers, use Empty mode and swap the inputs and outputs in the pattern.[36]

The ME Wireless Connector links two networks one-to-one. It has a limited range and can't cross dimensions. Link two connectors by clicking each with the ME Wireless Setup Kit. Connectors can be colored like cables and only connect to the same color. Power cost rises as the distance grows, on a curve that isn't linear, so very distant links get expensive. Each power-saving card reduces the cost by 10%.[37]

For many-to-many links, use the ME Wireless Hub, which has 8 ports and can connect up to 8 hubs or connectors at once. It picks a free port automatically. When all ports are taken, you need to disconnect one manually with the X button.[37][38]

Entro growth

Most extended items depend on Entro Crystal, which grows from Budding Entroized Fluix in a way similar to Certus Quartz. To start, craft an Entro Seed and right-click a Fluix Block with it to turn it into Budding Entroized Fluix. Unlike Certus, the degradation of the budding block is unavoidable.[8][9][10]

How do you progress through Extended AE?

7 parts

ExtendedAE in this pack lives in the quest chapter "Extended & Advanced AE". The path is simple: grow Entro Crystals, build the Crystal Assembler, then branch out into extended devices, wireless links and the Assembler Matrix. The first quest in the chapter comes after the ExtendedAE quest.[3]

Tier 1: Entro Crystals

The first quest is "The Crystals of Space and Time: Entro Crystals" quest. Right-click a Fluix Block with an Entro Seed to make Budding Entroized Fluix. It grows Entro Buds around it, like Budding Certus Quartz does, but its decay is inevitable. It always drops one Entro Dust when broken, whatever state it's in. Buds that aren't fully grown drop Entro Shard.[3]

It can also handle in-world reactions, though not as well as the Reaction Chamber, and it assembles processors 4 at a time. The face with the screen can't connect to an ME Network.[3]

Extended devices and upgrades

"Faster and Bigger: Extended Devices" quest covers the extended versions of AE2 devices, which are bigger, faster, or both. The ME Extended Pattern Provider has 36 pattern slots, 4 times a normal Pattern Provider. The extended import and export buses work about 8x faster and support more upgrades. The quest accepts any one of the extended import bus, export bus, charger, inscriber, molecular assembler, drive, IO port, interface or pattern provider.[3]

You don't have to tear down your network to switch. Sneak and right-click an existing device with the matching upgrade item, such as the Pattern Provider Upgrade, Interface Upgrade, Import/Export Bus Upgrade, Pattern Access Terminal Upgrade or Drive Upgrade. The device becomes its extended version and keeps its settings and inventory.[25]

"Connections across long distances: The Wireless Connector" quest gives you the ME Wireless Connector and the ME Wireless Setup Kit. Use the kit on two connectors to link them. Connectors reach about 1000 blocks and can't cross dimensions. Changing a connector's color with the Color Applicator stops it connecting to cables or connectors of a different color.[3]

"Branches of Connections: The Wireless Hub" quest comes after that and upgrades the idea into the ME Wireless Hub. It connects to 8 different connectors or hubs, but can only transfer 32 channels in total.[3]

The Assembler Matrix

"Many Assemblers In One: The Assembler Matrix" quest comes after the extended devices quest. The Assembler Matrix is a multiblock that holds many molecular assemblers and pattern providers on a single channel. It must be a completely filled cuboid between 3x3x3 and 7x7x7, with frames on the edges, walls or glass on the faces, and cores inside. It needs at least one pattern core and one craft core. When it's formed and powered, the lines on the frame turn blue.[3][7]

The quest walks you through a 7x7x7 build. It asks for the first 43 frames and 125 walls, and the rewards add 25 of each, for a total of 68 frames and 150 walls.[3]

"Assembler Matrix Cores" quest covers the cores. Each Assembler Matrix Craft Core adds 8 parallel crafting jobs, and each Assembler Matrix Pattern Core adds 36 pattern slots. Side branches: cells and bees

"Matter Condenser in a Cell: The Void Cell" quest and "More Resources than you ever need: Infinity Cells" quest follow a different quest than the Crystal Assembler. The ME Void Cell must be partitioned in a Cell Workbench first. It then deletes matching items entering the system, or condenses them into Matter Balls or Singularities. Infinity Cells give a limitless supply of one resource, such as water, cobblestone or lava.[3]

The pack adds its own recipe for the Infinity Cobblestone Cell.[12]

How does Extended AE work with other mods?

4 parts

Extended AE is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2, so almost everything it does plugs straight into your AE2 network. On top of that, the pack ties it to several other mods through recipes and quests. Here is where they meet.[1][12]

Applied Energistics 2 is the foundation

Extended devices are upgraded variants of AE2 devices. They have more capacity, more speed, or both. The Extended Pattern Provider has 36 pattern slots, 4 times as many as an ordinary Pattern Provider, and the Extended Import and Export Buses work about 8x faster than the regular ones.[3]

You build most of them in the Crystal Assembler, which is itself crafted from AE2 parts. The Extended Drive is a good example of how each device starts from its AE2 counterpart.[5][12]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Extended AE?

5 parts

The ExtendedAE quests are in the Extended & Advanced AE chapter, with one extra quest in the Productive Bees chapter. The chapter is a tech tree: you start with Entro Crystals, move on to the Crystal Assembler, and then branch out into the individual devices.[3][39]

Starting out: Entro Crystals and the Crystal Assembler

"The Crystals of Space and Time: Entro Crystals" quest is the first ExtendedAE quest in the chapter, and it unlocks after the chapter's ExtendedAE intro quest. Its tasks are an Entro Seed, an observation task, and an Entro Crystal. The quest explains that you right-click a Fluix Block with the seed to make Budding Entroized Fluix, which grows Entro Buds and always drops one Entro Dust when broken.[3]

Next comes "Complex Crafter: The Crystal Assembler" quest, which asks you to get a Crystal Assembler. The quest says you need it to assemble the various ExtendedAE devices. It can also assemble processors, 4 at a time.[3]

Quests that unlock after the Crystal Assembler

Seven quests open up once you finish the Crystal Assembler quest. They can be done in any order:[3]

Wireless Hub and Assembler Matrix

"Branches of Connections: The Wireless Hub" quest follows the Wireless Connector quest and asks for the ME Wireless Hub. The quest says a hub connects to 8 different Wireless Connectors or Hubs and transfers 32 channels in total.[3]

"Many Assemblers In One: The Assembler Matrix" quest follows the Extended Devices quest. Its tasks are the Assembler Matrix Frame and Assembler Matrix Wall. The quest describes a multiblock from 3x3x3 up to 7x7x7, and uses a 7x7x7 build as its example. It asks you to make the first 43 frames and 125 walls, and gives 25 of each as a reward, for totals of 68 frames and 150 walls.[3]

"Assembler Matrix Cores" quest comes last in that line. According to the quest, Pattern Cores (Assembler Matrix Pattern Core) add 36 pattern slots, Craft Cores (Assembler Matrix Craft Core) add 8 maximum parallel crafting jobs, and Speed Cores (Assembler Matrix Speed Core) work like an Acceleration Card. Installing more than 5 Speed Cores has no further effect on the speed of each crafting job.[3]

Cell quests

"Matter Condenser in a Cell: The Void Cell" quest asks for the ME Void Cell. "More Resources than you ever need: Infinity Cells" quest accepts any one of a long list of infinity cells, including the Infinity Water Cell and Infinity Cobblestone Cell. The rest of that list is made up of kubejs cells such as lava, dirt and sand. Both quests unlock after a quest in "Extended \& Advanced AE", which is outside the ExtendedAE-specific quests. The Void Cell quest also reminds you to partition the cell in a Cell Workbench before use.[3]

Productive Bees

"Entro Bee" quest sits in the Productive Bees chapter, not the ExtendedAE one. Its tasks are one configurable bee item (a honeycomb, comb, spawn egg or cage) and an Entro Block. The quest text says you can throw a Fluix Bee Spawn Egg and Entro Dust into Water to create a Sky Steel Bee Spawn Egg.[39]

What changed in Extended AE between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Extended AE 1.21-2.2.30-neoforge. The mod has been in the pack since version 1.0 or earlier. Below are the changes from the earlier mod releases that I have changelogs for.[2]
