What is Immersive Engineering?

3 parts

Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around realism-inspired, retro-futuristic machines. Instead of glowing tubes you get actual hanging powerlines, and power travels through cables strung between connectors rather than through lanes of blocks. It uses the Forge Energy API, so it plays nicely with other tech mods, but it also works fully standalone.[1]

Many of its machines are big multiblocks. The Crusher is a 5x3x3 structure with rotating wheels, and the Excavator is a 3x7x8 monster with a bucketwheel that digs ores out of the ground. For power you get waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more.[1]

The pack's quest chapter describes the look as retro: everything is brown, grey and dark grey. It all starts with the Engineer's Hammer, which you use to make plates and dust and to assemble multiblocks. The chapter also warns you that you'll be building a lot of them.[2]

Not everything is a multiblock, though. Some machines are single blocks, and the quest chapter says they matter just as much.[2]

Who it's for

If you like multiblock machines, fun tools and a bit of hands-on engineering, this mod is for you. The ATM Star quest describes it as all about exactly that, and promises you won't need 4 years of college.[3]

Where it fits in this pack

Immersive Engineering is part of the ATM Star path. Its entry quest, "Immersive Engineering" quest, asks you for the Engineer's Hammer. The next step on that path is "Tesla Coil" quest, which asks for the Tesla Coil.[3]

The Tesla Coil quest warns that the recipe looks complicated but can be broken down. It involves hammer or Metal Press plates, wire-cut coil blocks, the Engineer's Workbench with blueprints, and refining and fermenting in multiblock machines. Plan for a decent chunk of progression through the mod before you get there.[3]

Good first steps

Tip: The mod has its own in-game documentation, the Engineer's Manual. Check it whenever a multiblock's layout or a machine's behaviour confuses you.[1]

How do you get started with Immersive Engineering?

6 parts

Immersive Engineering is all about multiblock machines, fun tools and, of course, engineering. In this pack the quest book starts you off with one tool and branches out from there. Here is the order I'd follow, and why.[2][3]

First, the Engineer's Hammer

The whole mod starts with the Engineer's Hammer, as the first quest "Immersive Engineering" quest says. You use it to make plates and dust, and to build your multiblocks. You'll be building a lot of those.[2]

The mod also has its own in-game documentation, the Engineer's Manual, so it's worth opening whenever you want more detail.[1]

Build a Coke Oven

The Coke Oven comes first because it makes your fuel. It smelts logs into charcoal, and coal or coal blocks into coke. Either way you also get creosote oil. It's a 3x3x3 of Coke Brick. Right-click the middle block of the front side with your hammer to form it. The quest is "Coke Oven" quest.[2]

Make steel in the Crude Blast Furnace

The Crude Blast Furnace is the simple early way to make steel. It's a 3x3x3 of Blast Brick, formed by right-clicking the front middle block with your hammer. You feed it an iron ingot plus charcoal or coke. Each steel ingot takes 60 seconds to bake. Charcoal covers 15 of those seconds, while coke covers all 60, so your Coke Oven pays off quickly. You also get slag, which the quest calls pretty useless. See "Crude Blast Furnace" quest.[2]

Set up the Alloy Kiln

The Alloy Kiln combines two different metals, with a furnace fuel like charcoal in the bottom slot. It's a 2x2x2 of Kiln Brick. Right-click the top right block with your hammer to form it. The quest is "Alloy Kiln" quest.[2]

Treated wood for small machines

Not every machine is a multiblock. The Small Machines quest "Small Machines" quest asks you for Treated Wood Planks and reminds you that single-block machines are just as important. The pack changes how this item can be made, adding a Create spout filling recipe for it, which pairs nicely with the creosote from your Coke Oven.[2][4]

Start on power

Lots of things need energy, so grab the Engineer's Wire Cutters next. You snip plates into wires, which then go into coils. The cutters also take wires off connectors. See "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest.[2]

Then check "Wire Coils" quest. To connect a wire, right-click one part with the coil, then right-click the second part with the same coil. The path can't be obstructed, and higher voltage tiers carry more energy, with HV moving the most.[2]

Tip: Keep an Engineer's Screwdriver handy. Most machines have default inputs and outputs, but you can configure them with it. The "Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest quest covers this.[2]

How does Immersive Engineering work?

6 parts

Immersive Engineering is built around big, physical machines. Many of them are multiblocks, and power doesn't travel through lanes of blocks. It travels through cables strung between connectors. The mod uses the Forge Energy API, so it can run fully standalone, and every energy number below is in Flux.[1]

The mod's own documentation is the Engineer's Manual, so keep it handy. It is crafted with a book and a lever.[1]

Multiblocks

The Crusher is a 5x3x3 multiblock with rotating wheels. The Excavator is a much bigger 3x7x8 build with a rotating bucketwheel that digs ore out of the ground, and it's resource intensive to build.[1]

The mod also gives you an advancement for forming several other multiblocks: the Arc Furnace, the Crude Blast Furnace, the Improved Blast Furnace, the Diesel Generator and the Metal Press.[5]

Power generation

Power comes from waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. The Kinetic Dynamo turns the rotation of an attached water- or windmill into energy. In this pack its output modifier, machines.dynamo_output, is 3, the same as the mod default, and it gets adjusted by the rotation modifier of the wheel or mill.[1][6]

The Diesel Generator outputs 4,096 Flux per tick according to machines.dieselGen_output, which is also the mod default. The burn time of the fuel determines the total output.[6]

Storing and moving energy

Capacitors come in three tiers: low, medium and high voltage. The values below are what the pack's config shows, and each one matches the mod default:[6]

The Charging Station can insert up to 256 Flux per tick into an item (machines.charger_consumption).[6]

The mod has in-game readouts for energy. One shows the energy stored versus the maximum, in Flux. Another shows the average energy transferred over a number of ticks, in Flux per tick. A third shows the average loss between points.[5]

Machine costs and speeds

Several processing machines have an energy modifier and a time modifier in the server config that scale every recipe for that machine. They cover the Arc Furnace, Auto Workbench, Bottling Machine and Crusher, and they're all at 1 in this pack, so recipes run at the mod's normal cost and speed.[6]

The Assembler uses 80 Flux for each item it crafts from a recipe (machines.assembler_consumption).[6]

The External Heater uses 8 Flux per tick to add one heat to a furnace. It creates up to 4 heat during startup and then 1 heat per tick to keep the furnace running (machines.external_heater.consumption).[6]

Arc Furnace electrodes take 1 damage per tick while the furnace works. With machines.arc_furnace.electrodeDamage at 96,000, that's their lifetime in ticks, which the config describes as 8 consecutive in-game days. Arc Furnace recycling is no longer a config option. The mod controls it through a datapack recipe file instead.[6]

The Bottling Machine has two modes you can switch between: hold containers until they're full, or allow partial filling.[5]

Mineral veins, core samples and the Excavator

The Core Sample Drill uses 40 Flux per tick (machines.coredrill.consumption) and takes 200 ticks (machines.coredrill.time) to work out which mineral is in a chunk. The result tells you which vein was found, that there are no minerals, or how much integrity the vein has left.[5][6]

The Excavator uses 4,096 Flux per tick while it digs (machines.excavator.consumption). The most you can get out of a chunk is 38,400 yield, and a negative value in machines.excavator.yield makes it infinite. Both are mod defaults in this pack.[6]

When a vein generates, a random share up to 0.2 of it can already be depleted (machines.excavator.initial_depletion), which is also the mod default. The Excavator spawns a huge number of particles, and you can turn that off with machines.excavator.particles.[6]

Watch out: This pack sets the vein size to 0 for bauxite, deep nickel, lead, nickel, silver and uranium (ores.bauxite.vein_size, ores.deep_nickel.vein_size, ores.lead.vein_size, ores.nickel.vein_size, ores.silver.vein_size, ores.uranium.vein_size). A vein size of 0 disables generation, so Immersive Engineering won't generate those ores in the world. The mod's defaults for them were 6, 6, 8, 5, 9 and 4.[6]

Automation and control

The mod has several logistics blocks: the Conveyor Belt, the Dropping and Extracting Conveyor Belts, the Item Router, the Item Batcher and Sheetmetal Chutes. An extracting conveyor shows how many items per second it will pull.[5]

Machines can use redstone control, and each one reports whether the signal is inverted. Some also have a strong redstone signal option that you can switch on or off.[5]

Watch out: The mod's pump can replace fluid blocks with cobblestone. The mod itself warns that this can cause lag and isn't advisable around large amounts of fluid.[5]

How do you progress through Immersive Engineering?

4 parts

Immersive Engineering has no single linear path in this pack. The quest book starts with one quest, and the rest branch out from it. You begin with the Engineer's Hammer, which the quest says is used to make Plates and Dust and to build the mod's many multiblocks.[2]

Step 1: Hammer, bricks and your first multiblocks

Once you have the Engineer's Hammer, several quests unlock straight away. Here is what each one covers.[2]

Here is how the bricks are crafted in the pack.[4]

Step 2: Power and the voltage tiers

The power branch starts with the Engineer's Wire Cutters in the Immersive Engineering Power! quest "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest. You use it to snip Plates into Wires, which then go into Coils, and it also removes Wires from Connectors.[2]

The Wire Coils quest "Wire Coils" quest follows. It covers LV Wire Coil, MV Wire Coil and HV Wire Coil. Tiered Voltage "Tiered Voltage" quest then explains the three tiers: Low Voltage (LV), Medium Voltage (MV) and High Voltage (HV). The higher the voltage, the more energy can be moved and used, and some machines need a higher voltage to work. To move energy between voltages you need Transformers, which have their own quest "Transformers" quest.[2]

Each tier has its own wire connector in the pack, so you can craft them as you move up.[4]

Three more quests unlock after the power intro. They cover your first generators and a bigger build.[2]

Step 3: Logistics and small machines

The Immersive Engineering Logistics quest "Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest points you to the Engineer's Screwdriver for configuring machine inputs and outputs. Four quests unlock after it.[2]

The Small Machines quest "Small Machines" quest covers single-block machines. Five quests unlock after it: the External Heater, Garden Cloche, Electromagnet, Turntable and Charging Station.[2]

The pack also changes how Treated Wood Planks is made, with a Create spout filling recipe.[4]

Watch out: The External Heater works with furnaces like the Vanilla ones, but not with the Crude Blast Furnace. Wooden Barrels can't hold warm fluids or gases, so use Metal Barrels for those.[2]

Step 4: Bigger multiblocks

The Squeezer "Squeezer" quest, the Assembler "Assembler" quest and the Mixer "Mixer" quest all unlock after both the Redstone Engineering Block and Light Engineering Block quests. Those two blocks are the gate to the larger machines in the quest book.[2]

The Squeezer squeezes items into other items or fluids, mainly Plant Oil from seeds. The Assembler is set up mostly through its GUI, where you set 3 recipes in priority order.[2]

How does Immersive Engineering work with other mods?

5 parts

Immersive Engineering doesn't live in its own bubble in this pack. The pack's recipe changes tie it to the metals from All the Ores, to Farmer's Delight, and even to a few gear-progression recipes. Here's where the mod crosses over with others.[4]

Plates with the Engineer's Hammer

The pack changed the hammering recipes so the Engineer's Hammer turns ingots into All the Ores plates, for example Iron Plate, Copper Plate and Steel Plate. The same goes for aluminum, constantan, electrum, gold, lead, nickel, silver and uranium. Any ingot of the right metal works, because the recipes accept the common ingot tags.[4]

Press molds in the stamper

Your IE press molds (Metal Press Mold: Plate, Metal Press Mold: Rod and Metal Press Mold: Wire) are also used in stamper recipes the pack adds. The plate and rod molds make All the Ores plates and rods for a long list of metals, including Brass Plate, Bronze Rod, Zinc Plate and Diamond Plate. The wire mold makes Create Additions wires such as Copper Wire and Gold Wire.[4]

Arc Furnace recycling

The pack adds Arc Furnace recipes that break IE sheetmetal back down into All the Ores materials. Steel Sheetmetal becomes Steel Ingot, and Lead Sheetmetal Slab becomes Lead Nugget. Aluminum, constantan, electrum, nickel, silver and uranium sheetmetal and slabs work the same way.[4]

The pack also changed recycling recipes for the Faraday Boots and for the IE metal slabs, such as Steel Slab. Both end in All the Ores items, Aluminum Nugget and Steel Block in the examples below.[4]

Which All the Mons quests use Immersive Engineering?

7 parts

Immersive Engineering has its own quest chapter in the pack. A handful of quests there have no prerequisite, and the rest branch off them. Here is the order, branch by branch, covering the quests I can confirm.[2]

The starting quests

  1. "Immersive Engineering" quest asks for the Engineer's Hammer. The whole mod starts with it, and you use it to make plates and dust and to build multiblocks.[2]
  2. "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest asks for the Engineer's Wire Cutters, which you use to snip plates into wires for coils.[2]
  3. "Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest asks for the Engineer's Screwdriver, which you use to configure machine inputs and outputs.[2]
  4. "Small Machines" quest asks for Treated Wood Planks and introduces the machines that are built from a single block.[2]

After the Engineer's Hammer quest

Machines unlocked by both engineering blocks

These multiblock quests unlock once you have finished both the Redstone Engineering Block and Light Engineering Block quests: "Squeezer" quest, "Assembler" quest, "Mixer" quest and "Crusher" quest. Each one asks you to gather its building materials, such as Steel Scaffolding and Steel Fence.[2]

Power branch

These all follow "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest. "Wire Coils" quest asks for any one of the LV, MV or HV wire coils. After it come "Tiered Voltage" quest, which asks for all three coils, and "Transformers" quest, which asks for a Transformer or HV Transformer.[2]

Logistics branch

These follow "Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest. "Moving Items" quest asks for the Conveyor Belt, and "Types of Belts" quest then asks for any belt type. "Moving Fluids" quest asks for the Fluid Pipe, and it unlocks "Fluid Pump" quest (Fluid Pump) and "Fluid Outlet" quest (Fluid Outlet).[2]

For storage, "Storing Items" quest asks for a Wooden Storage Crate or Reinforced Storage Crate. "Storing Fluids" quest asks for a Wooden Barrel or Metal Barrel, and "Tank" quest follows it, asking for Iron Sheetmetal and Treated Wood Fence.[2]

Small machines branch

These untitled quests all follow "Small Machines" quest: a quest in "Immersive Engineering" (External Heater), a quest in "Immersive Engineering" (Garden Cloche), a quest in "Immersive Engineering" (Electromagnet), a quest in "Immersive Engineering" (Turntable) and a quest in "Immersive Engineering" (Charging Station).[2]

Offense and defense

These quests follow a quest named Offense and Defense: a quest in "Immersive Engineering" (Gun Turret), a quest in "Immersive Engineering" (Chemthrower Turret), a quest in "Immersive Engineering" (Tesla Coil) and a quest in "Immersive Engineering" (Razor Wire).[2]

Which Immersive Engineering config options matter?

3 parts

Most of Immersive Engineering's config in this pack is left at the mod's defaults. The one big change is ore generation, so start there.[6]

Ore generation is switched off

The pack sets the vein size to 0 for every Immersive Engineering ore. The config describes 0 as the value that disables generation, so none of these ores are meant to spawn from the mod's own world generation. Here are the options the pack changed, with the mod default for each.[6]

The other ore settings, such as attempts per chunk and the Y range, are untouched defaults. Retro-generation is also off for every ore, so these ores will not be added to chunks that were already generated.[6]

Everything else is at the mod default

Every machine speed and energy modifier is 1, so recipes run at the mod's normal cost and time. The Excavator, the big multiblock that digs ores out of the ground with a rotating bucketwheel, also keeps its defaults: machines.excavator.yield is 38,400 and machines.excavator.chance is 0.9. Its particle effect is still on, and you can turn it off by setting machines.excavator.particles to false if it hurts your FPS.[1][6]

Wires are also unchanged from the defaults. Here are the main limits:[6]

  • Copper wire: max length 16, transfer rate 2,048 IF/t.[6]
  • Electrum wire: max length 16, transfer rate 8,192 IF/t.[6]
  • HV wire: max length 32, transfer rate 32,768 IF/t.[6]
Watch out: Wire damage is still on, so wires connected to power sources hurt entities that touch them. Placing a block in a wire also breaks it and drops the coil. These are controlled by wires.enableWireDamage and wires.blocksBreakWires.[6]

Tool durability is also at the defaults: the Engineer's Hammer has 100 and the Wirecutter has 250.[6]

Client options

In the client config, badEyesight is true, which switches the Engineer's manual to bold, darker text. showUpdateNews is false, which hides the update news in the manual.[7]

Tip: If your FPS drops near turrets or garden cloches, disableFancyTESR is currently false. Setting it to true may improve FPS, and it only affects those blocks.[7]

What changed in Immersive Engineering between versions?

3 parts

All the Mons 1.3.0 includes Immersive Engineering 12.4.2-194, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.3.0-beta or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelog for that version.[8][9]

New features

  • The item router can now filter by mod, in addition to filtering by tags.[8]
  • Cloche recipes can now have an optional "fluid" element. If a recipe doesn't specify one, it uses water. Crimson and warped fungi are now grown with lava.[8]
  • There's a new item hatch, which lets you pull a single stack from an inventory.[8]

Changes

  • Extracting conveyors now have a configurable stack size instead of a configurable tick rate. Your existing conveyors need to be adjusted again.[8]
  • The storage shelf has new insertion logic. It tries to fill slots that already hold the same item, and otherwise places the item in the slots right after that item. This keeps the individual crates on the shelf more organized, and it works for both shift-clicking and automatic insertion.[8]
  • Illager loot tables changed: fusiliers and bulwarks now respect looting, and commandos no longer drop emeralds.[8]

Fixes

  • The mixer no longer accidentally crafts a lingering awkward potion.[8]
  • Catwalks now work properly when you use a hammer on them.[8]
  • Shift-click behavior in the Engineer's Crafting Table is fixed.[8]
  • Chutes now accept item input from the side.[8]
  • Engineer illagers now drop their raid banner.[8]
  • Shelves no longer crash the game when accessed from unexpected sides.[8]
  • Windows used in multiblocks are no longer so directionally dependent.[8]
  • The backpack antenna now visually disconnects from wires.[8]
