What is RFTools Base?
3 parts
RFTools Base is the base mod for McJty's tech mods. It is mostly a foundation: it supplies shared materials and tools that the other mods in the family build on, rather than a big machine mod of its own. This pack includes version 1.21-6.0.11, and the mod depends on McJtyLib.[1][2][3]
What it gives you
- Dimensional Shard ore: a small amount generates in the Overworld, with more in other dimensions.[1]
- The machine infuser.[1]
- Base crafting materials for the other tech mods.[1]
- The smart wrench.[1]
- A security and owner system.[1]
Dimensional Shards
Dimensional Shard Ore is found underground in small clusters in various dimensions. Fortune affects it, and it drops Dimensional Shards when broken. The shards go into several of the more complicated recipes, and you can also use them to infuse machines.[4]
Machine Frames and Machine Bases
Machine Frames are the housing for machines and devices. They do nothing on their own, but they show up all the time as a crafting ingredient.[5]
Machine Bases are a similar crafting material, but the machines made from them are a quarter of a block high and usually have some form of redstone input or output. They do nothing on their own either, and they are used in many recipes as the base for other blocks. If a machine made this way faces the wrong direction, right-click it with the wrench in Wrench Mode to change it.[6]
How do you get started with RFTools Base?
5 parts
RFTools Base is the base mod for the whole RFTools family, plus Deep Resonance and XNet. On its own it gives you crafting materials, the smart wrench and the machine infuser, and the other RFTools mods build on those. Here is what to make first, in order.[1][3]
Step 1: The Technology Guide
Start with the Technology Guide. It is the manual for all RFTools based technology mods, so it is a handy reference as you go. The pack changed this recipe, so use the one below.[7][8]

Recipe id: rftoolsbase:manual
Step 2: The Smart Wrench
Next, make the Smart Wrench. Right-click on air to change its mode. Used as a normal wrench, you sneak-right-click to pick a machine up and right-click to rotate it. Its recipe is also changed by the pack.[7][8]

Step 3: Dimensional Shards
Dimensional Shard are the key resource of this mod. They go into several of the more complicated recipes and are also used to infuse machines. The ore is found underground in small clusters in various dimensions, and Fortune affects its drops.[4]
The pack also changed the crafting recipe for the shard itself, so you can make one by hand with the recipe below.[8]

If you have the ore, other mods' machines can process it. Crushing Dimensional Shard Ore in Create gives 3 shards, and Mekanism's crusher gives 2 per ore.[8]
Step 4: Machine Frame and Machine Base
The Machine Frame is the housing for machines and devices. It does nothing on its own, but it is a very common crafting ingredient. The pack changed its recipe.[5][8]

The Machine Base is also only a crafting material. Machines made from it are a quarter of a block high and usually have some redstone input or output. That makes them convenient to place on walls or in cramped spaces.[6]

Step 5: The Machine Infuser
Once you have shards and a frame, make the Machine Infuser. It spends Dimensional Shards to improve many other RFTools machines. For most of them, infusing lowers their power requirements, and some get extra benefits. Infusing the infuser itself makes it use less power.[7][9]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: rftoolsbase:machine_infuser
The infuser's settings live in the server config, and this pack keeps these settings at the mod defaults:[10]
- infuser.maxInfuse is 256, the amount of dimensional shards before a machine is fully infused.[10]
- infuser.usePerTick is 600, the RF used per tick while infusing.[10]
- infuser.infuserRFPerTick is 600, the RF per tick the infuser can receive.[10]
- infuser.infuserMaxRF is 60,000, the maximum RF the infuser can hold.[10]

How does RFTools Base work?
6 parts
RFTools Base is the base mod for the whole RFTools family. Its features are Dimensional Shard worldgen, the Machine Infuser, base crafting materials for the other tech mods, the Smart Wrench, and a security and owner system.[1][3]
Dimensional Shards and infusing
Dimensional Shard Ore generates underground in small clusters in various dimensions. Fortune affects it, and it drops Dimensional Shard when broken. Shards go into several of the more complicated recipes, and they are also what you use to infuse machines.[4]
The pack changes the crafting recipe for the shard, so check the recipe below rather than relying on what you remember from the mod. Other machines can also turn the ore into shards: Create crushing gives 3 shards per stone ore and Mekanism crushing gives 2.[8]

The Machine Infuser spends shards to improve other machines. For most machines, infusing reduces their power requirements, and some get extra benefits. Infusing the Infuser itself makes it use less power.[7][9]

Here are some of the extra benefits listed in the guide:[9]
- The Crafter uses less power when infused.[12]
- The Matter Transmitter uses less power and teleports faster.[13]
- The Screen Controller gets a larger scan range. By default it covers 32x32x32 blocks.[14]
- The Matter Beamer sends more items per pulse and costs less FE.[15]
The Infuser's own numbers are set in the server config, and in this pack all four match the mod defaults:[10]
- infuser.maxInfuse is 256, the amount of dimensional shards before a machine is fully infused.[10]
- infuser.infuserMaxRF is 60,000, the maximum RF the Infuser can store.[10]
- infuser.infuserRFPerTick is 600, the RF per tick the Infuser can receive.[10]
- infuser.usePerTick is 600, the RF used per tick while infusing.[10]
Machine Frames and Machine Bases
Machine Frame and Machine Base do nothing on their own. They are crafting ingredients that other machines are built from. The pack changes the Machine Frame recipe.[5][6][8]

Machines made from a Machine Base are a quarter of a block high and usually have some form of redstone input or output. When you place one, its facing depends on which edge of the block face your cursor is nearest. Imagine an X on that face: the output faces the quarter you are looking at, and the input comes from the opposite side. This makes them easy to fit into cramped spaces or onto walls and ceilings.[6][16]

Smart Wrench
The Smart Wrench works like a normal wrench: sneak-right-click to pick a tech block up and right-click to rotate it. Right-click in the air to change mode. In Select mode you sneak-right-click to select a master block, then right-click other blocks to associate them with it. This is how you link things such as a Shield Projector.[7][17]
It is also how you set up power sides on some blocks. On a Powercell, hitting a side with the wrench in Wrench Mode cycles it between input (blue), output (yellow) and neither (blank). Dimensional Cells work the same way.[18][19]

Modules and the Filter Module
Many RFTools machines accept modules, which are items that modify them or add functions. In most cases you can just right-click the machine with the module to insert it.[20]
The Filter Module is the shared item filter. It whitelists or blacklists blocks, items and tags, and can also require matching on NBT and damage. Machines that support it include the Builder, Modular Storage and the Crafter.[21]
- Sneak-right-click an inventory such as a chest to add everything in it to the filter.[21]
- Sneak-right-click a block in the world to add that block.[21]
- In the module's GUI you can add tags, or convert a block or item into its tags.[21]

Crafting Card
The Crafting Card holds a recipe. It can store a regular 3x3 recipe or more complex shapes, and various machines can read it. The stored recipe does not have to be valid, so the card can also stand in for a set of inputs and an output.[22]
Remote access and monitoring
The Tablet (empty) lets you reach machines remotely. Sneak-right-click to open its internal GUI and install up to 6 modules. A normal right-click opens the GUI of the current module, and you switch modules with the previous and next target keys. The remote machine must be near enough or chunkloaded. If it is properly chunkloaded, the tablet works even from another dimension.[7][23]
A tablet that already holds an information item behaves differently: right-click opens the information GUI and sneak-right-click opens the tablet GUI.[7]

The Information Screen is a small screen you put next to a machine. By default it shows energy information. Some machines, such as Powercells, offer extra display modes, which you toggle by using a wrench on the screen. It can show power information for any block that supports RF/FE.[7][11]

How do you progress through RFTools Base?
4 parts
RFTools Base is a support mod, so the progression below follows its crafting recipes in this pack. Machine Frames and Machine Bases do nothing on their own and are used as crafting ingredients, while Dimensional Shards are used in several more complicated recipes.[4][5][6][8]
Tier 1: Frames, bases and basic tools
You start with the housing items. The Machine Frame is a ubiquitous crafting ingredient, and the pack has changed its recipe.[5][8]

The Machine Base is the second housing piece. It makes machines a quarter of a block high, which usually have some form of redstone input or output. This recipe is the mod's own.[6][8]

The pack has also changed the recipes for the Technology Guide, the Smart Wrench and the Filter Module. The Crafting Card keeps the mod's recipe and makes 8 per craft.[8]

Tier 2: Dimensional Shards
The Dimensional Shard is the gate to the more complicated recipes. In this pack you can craft it directly, and the recipe is changed by the pack.[4][8]
Crafting Shaped
| any glass blocks |
Recipe id: rftoolsbase:dimensionalshard
You also have other ways to get shards:[8]
- Mine Dimensional Shard Ore, which generates underground in small clusters in various dimensions, drops shards when broken and is affected by Fortune.[4]
- Process the ore in a machine. The pack adds ore-to-shard recipes for Mekanism (2 shards per ore), Create (3 per Dimensional Shard Ore), Oritech (3 per ore), Ender IO (1 shard plus cobblestone), Actually Additions and Modern Industrialization.[8]
- Smelt or blast Neovitae dimensional shard dust into a shard.[8]
- Use a Productive Bees centrifuge recipe, which has a shard as its output.[8]
- Hope for luck in the Goat event, whose loot table includes the shard as one of its possible drops.[24]
Tier 3: Shard-based items
Once you have shards, the infused materials come next. The Infused Diamond and the Infused Enderpearl both use a shard as an ingredient and keep the mod's recipes.[8]

The Machine Infuser needs a shard and a Machine Frame. Shards can be used to infuse machines, and for example infusing the Crafter reduces its power usage.[4][8][12]

Other crafted items
The Information Screen is made from a Machine Base and uses the mod's recipe. The empty Tablet (empty) does not need a shard, and its recipe is changed by the pack.[8]

How does RFTools Base work with other mods?
2 parts
In this pack, RFTools Base connects to other mods through recipes. Its Machine Frame and Machine Base are the shared building blocks of the other RFTools mods (Builder, Power, Storage and Utility). Vanilla items such as redstone, quartz and iron go on top of them.[3][5][6][8]
Getting Dimensional Shards from other mods
Dimensional Shards are used in several of the more complicated RFTools recipes. You can find Dimensional Shard Ore underground and mine it, but the pack also adds machine routes from other mods. A Create crushing recipe turns one ore into 3 Dimensional Shard.[4][8]
Crushing (create)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/create/crushing/ores/stone/gem_ore_to_gem/dimensional_shard
An Ender IO SAG mill gives you cobblestone and 1 shard per ore.[8]
Sag Milling (enderio)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/enderio/sag_milling/ores/stone/gem_ore_to_gem/dimensional_shard
The pack also lets you turn Dimensional Shard Dust into a shard, either by smelting or by blasting.[8]
Smelting
Recipe id: neovitae:materials/smelting_dimensional_shard_dust
Blasting
Recipe id: neovitae:materials/blasting_dimensional_shard_dust
There is also a Productive Bees bee conversion recipe that takes an Infused Diamond as its input.[8]
Bee Conversion (productivebees)
Recipe id: productivebees:bee_conversion/rftoolsbase/dimensional_shard_bee
The pack's own Goat event script is one more source. It spawns a Quantum Goat near you, and the loot it leaves behind can be a Dimensional Shard (weight 10 in its loot table). That is the same weight as obsidian and a bit below iron or copper ingots (15).[24]
Recipes the pack changed
Several recipes that use RFTools Base parts are marked as changed by the pack, so don't assume the original mod recipe applies. Check the recipe viewer for these:[8]
- Module Template, which uses both a Dimensional Shard and an Infused Diamond.[8]
- The Mover family: Mover, Mover Controller, Mover Control and Mover Status.[8]
- Vehicle Builder and Shield Projector Tier 1.[8]
- Matter Transmitter, Matter Receiver, Tank, Screen and Sensor.[8]
- Blazing Agitator and Blazing Infuser.[8]

Which RFTools Base config options matter?
1 part
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
RFTools Base only has a handful of options that matter, and they all belong to the infuser. They live in infuser.infuserMaxRF's file, config/rftoolsbase-server.toml. The good news: this pack leaves every one of them at the mod default, so nothing has been changed here.[25]
Infuser settings in this pack
- infuser.infuserMaxRF is 60,000. This is the maximum RF the infuser can store. It matches the mod default.[25]
- infuser.infuserRFPerTick is 600. This is how much RF per tick the infuser can receive. It matches the mod default.[25]
- infuser.usePerTick is 600. This is the RF used per tick while infusing. It matches the mod default.[25]
- infuser.maxInfuse is 256. This is the maximum number of dimensional shards before a machine is fully infused. It matches the mod default.[25]
Because the infuser receives 600 RF per tick and uses 600 RF per tick, a feed of 600 RF per tick is enough to keep it running while it infuses. Its 60,000 RF buffer is the most it can hold.[25]
What changed in RFTools Base between versions?
