What is RFTools Builder?
1 part
Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide
RFTools Builder is an addon for RFTools Base that adds the builder, all of the shape cards, and the shield system. If you like automating big construction jobs or protecting your base with shields, this is the mod you're looking for.[1]
It's meant to be used together with RFTools Power. It also needs RFTools Base and McJtyLib to work, so those come along with it.[1]
In this pack
The pack ships RFTools Builder version 1.21-7.0.1. It has been in the pack since version 1.27 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list.[2]
Unverified No sources were available on where RFTools Builder fits into the pack's progression, and no in-jar guidebook was found. Recipes, config values and usage details for the builder, shape cards and shields are therefore not covered in this overview.
How do you get started with RFTools Builder?
4 parts
RFTools Builder adds the builder, all the shape cards and the shield system. It depends on RFTools Base and McJtyLib, and it is meant to be used together with RFTools Power.[1]
Step 1: the Builder
Start with the Builder. Its in-game description says it can quarry areas, pump liquids, move, copy and swap structures, collect items and XP, move entities and build structures.[3]
In this pack the Builder stores up to 1,000,000 RF (builder.builderMaxRF) and can receive 20,000 RF per tick (builder.builderRFPerTick). Building costs 500 RF per block operation (builder.builderRfPerOperation), so get your power sorted before you start.[4]
Step 2: a Shape Card
The Shape Card represents an area that the builder or the shield can use. To set it up, sneak right click on the builder to start mark mode, then right click to mark the two corners of the area you want.[3]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: rftoolsbuilder:shape_card_def
The pack changed this recipe from the mod's own.
Shape cards are enabled here (builder.shapeCardAllowed is true), and the quarry system needs that option on. With a shape card the builder handles shapes up to 512 blocks across (builder.maxBuilderDimension).[4]
Step 3: turn it into a quarry
Once the Builder works, upgrade a plain card into a Shape Card (Quarry). Quarry cards are allowed in this pack (builder.quarryAllowed), and the base quarry speed is 8 blocks per tick (builder.quarryBaseSpeed).[4][5]

The pack changed this recipe from the mod's own.
Later on
- The Composer combines shape cards into a composition card and lets you rotate, flip and apply boolean operations to each child shape.[3]
- The Shield Projector Tier 1 forms a shield out of adjacent template blocks, and you use the Smart Wrench to add sections to it. Template blocks of the same color must touch the projector. The pack changed the Tier 1 recipe, and a tier 1 shield is limited to 256 blocks (shield.shieldMaxSize).[3][4][5]

How does RFTools Builder work?
9 parts
The Builder is the heart of this mod. One machine can quarry areas, pump liquids, move, copy or swap structures, collect items and XP, move entities and build structures. What it does depends on the card you put in it. The mod also adds a shield system, a space chamber setup for copying or moving chunks of the world, and a mover system for vehicles.[1][3]
Shape cards
A Shape Card represents an area that the shield or the builder can use. To mark an area, sneak right click on the builder to start mark mode, then right click to mark two corners. The pack changed this card's crafting recipe from the mod's version. The builder.shapeCardAllowed option is true, and the quarry system needs it enabled too.[3][4][5]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: rftoolsbuilder:shape_card_def
Changed by the pack.
When a shape card is in the builder, the shape can be at most 512 blocks across (builder.maxBuilderDimension) with an offset of at most 260 (builder.maxBuilderOffset). Both are the mod defaults.[4]
The Composer combines shape cards into a composition card. It lets you rotate, flip and apply boolean operations to each child shape.[3]
Power and costs
The builder runs on RF. These are the values this pack uses, and they all match the mod defaults:[4]
- It stores up to 1,000,000 RF (builder.builderMaxRF) and can receive 20,000 RF per tick (builder.builderRFPerTick).[4]
- Building costs 500 RF per block operation (builder.builderRfPerOperation).[4]
- Quarrying or voiding has a base cost of 300 RF per block, and the real cost depends on block hardness (builder.builderRfPerQuarry). Pumping has a base of 300 RF per block operation (builder.builderRfPerLiquid).[4]
- Moving an entity costs 5,000 RF (builder.builderRfPerEntity) and moving a player costs 40,000 RF (builder.builderRfPerPlayer).[4]
- Each block skipped because of a filter costs 50 RF (builder.builderRfPerSkipped).[4]
- Moving across dimensions is 5 times as expensive (builder.dimensionCostFactor).[4]
Infusing the builder gives a bonus: reduced power consumption and increased speed.[3]
Quarry, pump and void cards
Both builder.quarryAllowed and builder.clearingQuarryAllowed are true here, so quarry and clearing quarry cards can be crafted. The base quarry speed is 8 blocks per tick (builder.quarryBaseSpeed). Infusion adds to that: the infusion factor is multiplied by 20 and added to the base speed (builder.quarryInfusionSpeedFactor). The quarry chunkloads one chunk at a time and also quarries tile entities. The replacement block option is set to minecraft:dirt.[4]
Some cards multiply the builder's RF per operation:[4]
- Shape Card (Void): multiplied by 0.5 (builder.voidShapeCardFactor).[3][4]
- Shape Card (Fortune Quarry): multiplied by 2 (builder.fortunequarryShapeCardFactor).[3][4]
- Shape Card (Silk Quarry): multiplied by 3 (builder.silkquarryShapeCardFactor).[3][4]
The pump and liquid cards are made from a plain shape card, and the pack changed the recipe for the placing liquids card. The clearing variants are made from the matching non-clearing card.[5]
Copy Components (mcjtylib)
Recipe id: rftoolsbuilder:shape_card_liquid
Changed by the pack.
Collecting items and XP
In the builder's collect items mode, each item costs 20 RF (builder.collectRFPerItem) and each XP level costs 2 RF (builder.collectRFPerXP). It checks again every 10 ticks (builder.collectTimer), and keeping an area watched costs 0.5 RF per tick per area (builder.collectRFPerTickPerArea).[4]
Moving tile entities
The pack sets builder.tileEntityMode to MOVE_BLACKLIST, so tile entities can be moved except blacklisted ones. The block list is empty. In the NBT list, minecraft:chest is set to false, which blacklists its NBT data from being transferred.[4]
Space chamber and vehicles
To copy or move a chunk of the world, you mark it with space chamber blocks. The Space Chamber Controller is one of the eight corners of the area, and the other corners are normal Space Chamber blocks. The largest chamber dimension is 128 (builder.maxSpaceChamberDimension).[3][4]

The Space Card links to a chamber. Sneak right click it on a controller to set its channel, and right click in the air to see an overview of the area contents. Insert it in a builder to copy or move the linked area. The card has a base cost, and the final cost depends on infusion level. The pack changed this card's recipe.[3][5]

The Vehicle Builder uses a space card linked to a chamber to put a vehicle into a Vehicle Card. The Vehicle Control Module is crafted from a vehicle card.[3][5]
Movers
Mover blocks move vehicles to other movers, and you use them together with a Mover Controller, which you place next to one of the movers. The controller stores up to 100,000 RF (mover.moverControllerMaxRF), receives 1,000 RF per tick (mover.moverControllerRFPerTick), and one movement uses 1,000 RF (mover.rfPerMove). Infusing the controller reduces its power consumption. The pack changed the recipes for both the mover and the controller.[3][4][5]

The Mover Control screens go in your vehicle, and each screen lets you control the movement of the platform. The screen comes in several pages, including Mover Control (Page 2) and Mover Control (Page 4), and the recipes below show how to switch between them. The vehicle status module costs 2 RF per tick per block (mover.vehicleStatusRFPerTick), while the vehicle control module costs 0 (mover.vehicleControlRFPerTick).[3][4]
Shields
A Shield Projector (tiers 1 to 4) forms a shield out of adjacent template blocks. Template blocks come in colors, and the set of one color must touch the projector. The projector can filter by mob type and do things like damage or solid. Use the Smart Wrench to add sections to the shield. Infusing gives reduced power consumption and increased damage.[3]

Here are the pack's shield numbers, all at mod defaults:[4]
- The shield block stores up to 200,000 RF (shield.shieldMaxRF) and receives 5,000 RF per tick (shield.shieldRFPerTick).[4]
- Running costs a base of 8 RF per tick for every 10 blocks (shield.shieldRfBase). Shield mode adds 2 (shield.shieldRfShield) and camo mode adds 2 (shield.shieldRfCamo).[4]
- A damage spike does 5 damage (shield.shieldDamage) and costs 1,000 RF, or 2,000 RF against players (shield.shieldRfDamage, shield.shieldRfDamagePlayer).[4]
- A tier 1 shield can be at most 256 blocks (shield.shieldMaxSize). Disjoint sections of a composed shield can be added up to 64 blocks away (shield.maxDisjointShieldDistance).[4]
Scanner and projector
The config also covers the Scanner and Projector blocks. The scanner stores up to 500,000 RF and uses 1,000 RF per tick during a scan (scanner.scannerMaxRF, scanner.scannerUsePerTick). The projector also stores up to 500,000 RF and uses 1,000 RF per tick while in use (scanner.projectorMaxRF, scanner.projectorUsePerTick).[3][4]
How do you progress through RFTools Builder?
5 parts
RFTools Builder in this pack is a set of crafting chains, and this page walks through them in the order you would naturally build them. The recipe dump marks which recipes the pack changed, so I will point those out as we go.[5]
Shield Projector tiers
The clearest tier ladder in the mod is the shield projector. You craft Shield Projector Tier 1 from scratch, and the pack changed that recipe from the mod's default. Every tier after that is an upgrade of the one before it.[5]
- Craft Shield Projector Tier 1 (pack-changed recipe).[5]
- Upgrade it into Shield Projector Tier 2.[5]
- Upgrade that into Shield Projector Tier 3.[5]
- Upgrade that into Shield Projector Tier 4.[5]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: rftoolsbuilder:shield_block1
Tier 1 is the pack's own recipe.
Shield templates come in red, green, blue and yellow: Red Shield Template, Green Shield Template, Blue Shield Template and Yellow Shield Template. All four use the mod's default recipes.[5]

One craft makes 8 blocks. The other colours follow the same pattern with their own dye.
Builder and Shape Cards
The Builder uses the mod's default recipe. What it builds is driven by cards. Everything starts with the Shape Card, and the pack changed that recipe.[5]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: rftoolsbuilder:shape_card_def
The basic Shape Card recipe is changed by the pack.
The special cards are all made from a basic Shape Card, or from another special card:[5]
- Shape Card (Quarry) is made from the basic card, and the pack changed its recipe.[5]
- Shape Card (Fortune Quarry) and Shape Card (Silk Quarry) are both made from the Quarry card, using the mod's recipes.[5]
- Shape Card (Pump) and Shape Card (Void) are made from the basic card, using the mod's recipes.[5]
- Shape Card (Placing Liquids) is made from the basic card too, and the pack changed that recipe.[5]
- Clearing versions exist for the pump and for the quarry, fortune quarry and silk quarry cards, such as Shape Card (Clearing Quarry). Each is made from its matching normal card, and separate recipes turn a clearing card back into the normal one using dirt.[5]
Copy Components (mcjtylib)
Recipe id: rftoolsbuilder:shape_card_quarry
The Quarry card recipe is also changed by the pack.
Scanner, Composer and Projector
The Scanner, Composer and Projector all use the mod's default recipes in this pack, so nothing here differs from the base mod.[5]
Movers
The pack changed the recipes for Mover, Mover Controller, Mover Control and Mover Status.[5]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: rftoolsbuilder:mover
The Mover recipe is changed by the pack.
The Mover Control comes in pages: Mover Control, Mover Control (Page 2), Mover Control (Page 3) and Mover Control (Page 4). The mod has crafts to step from one page to the next, and page 4 can be turned back into the first Mover Control.[5]
Page changes use shapeless crafts like this one.
Space Chamber and vehicles
The Space Chamber and the Space Chamber Controller both use the mod's recipes. The Space Card is different, because the pack changed its recipe.[5]

How does RFTools Builder work with other mods?
3 parts
RFTools Builder is an addon for RFTools Base, and it also depends on McJtyLib. The mod's own page says it is meant to be used together with RFTools Power. In this pack's recipes, the links you will actually run into are with RFTools Base items and plain vanilla materials.[1]
RFTools Base is the foundation
Each of these machines uses a Machine Frame in its recipe: the Builder, Composer, Space Chamber, Projector, Scanner, Vehicle Builder, Shield Projector Tier 1 and the whole Mover family: Mover, Mover Controller, Mover Control and Mover Status. So get your Machine Frame production sorted first.[5]
- The Projector and the Scanner both need an Infused Diamond.[5]
- The Dimensional Shard is used in the Shape Card (Fortune Quarry) and Shape Card (Silk Quarry) upgrades, which both start from a Shape Card (Quarry). It is also used in the step up to Shield Projector Tier 3 and again to Shield Projector Tier 4.[5]
Vanilla and common-tag materials
- The Builder, Projector, Scanner and Mover Controller each take any ender pearl, so a pearl from any mod that tags it as one will do.[5]
- The Space Chamber takes any blue dye and any glass block.[5]
- The upper shield tiers are upgrades: Shield Projector Tier 3 is made from a Shield Projector Tier 2, and Shield Projector Tier 4 from a Tier 3. Tier 4 also needs a Nether Star, and so does the Silk Quarry card.[5]
Recipes the pack changed
Some recipes in this mod are marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. They are the Mover, Mover Controller, Mover Control, Mover Status, Shield Projector Tier 1 and Vehicle Builder. These are the in-pack versions:[5]

Which RFTools Builder config options matter?
5 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
RFTools Builder has a lot of config options, and in this pack they live in two files: a server file for costs, limits and permissions, and a client file for visuals. Every option here that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default. So the pack hasn't changed any of these values, and the numbers below are simply what you get in this pack.[6][7]
Builder power and limits
- builder.builderMaxRF is 1,000,000 RF of storage for the builder.[7]
- builder.builderRFPerTick lets the builder receive 20,000 RF per tick.[7]
- Building a block costs 500 RF through builder.builderRfPerOperation.[7]
- Moving an entity costs 5,000 RF, set by builder.builderRfPerEntity.[7]
- Moving a player costs 40,000 RF, set by builder.builderRfPerPlayer.[7]
- Shapes can be up to 512 blocks across (builder.maxBuilderDimension).[7]
- The shape offset can be up to 260 (builder.maxBuilderOffset).[7]
- Moving something across dimensions is 5 times more expensive, set by builder.dimensionCostFactor.[7]
Shape cards and quarries
Shape cards (builder.shapeCardAllowed), quarry cards (builder.quarryAllowed) and clearing quarry cards (builder.clearingQuarryAllowed) are all allowed to be crafted in this pack. The quarry also chunkloads one chunk at a time (builder.quarryChunkloads) and will quarry tile entities (builder.quarryTileEntities).[7]
- The quarry's base speed is 8 blocks per tick (builder.quarryBaseSpeed).[7]
- The fortune quarry card multiplies the builder's RF per operation by 2 (builder.fortunequarryShapeCardFactor).[7]
- The silk quarry card multiplies it by 3 (builder.silkquarryShapeCardFactor).[7]
- The void card multiplies it by 0.5 (builder.voidShapeCardFactor), so voiding is the cheapest option.[7]
Moving tile entities
builder.tileEntityMode is set to MOVE_BLACKLIST, which means every tile entity can be moved except blacklisted ones. The NBT list in builder.blackWhiteListedNBTBlocks contains minecraft:chest=false. Because that list works as a blacklist, a chest's NBT data is not transferred. The other list, builder.blackWhiteListedBlocks, is empty.[7]
Shield and scanner
- The shield block stores up to 200,000 RF (shield.shieldMaxRF).[7]
- The maximum size of a first-tier shield is 256 blocks (shield.shieldMaxSize).[7]
- Invisible shield mode is allowed (shield.allowInvisibleShield).[7]
- The scanner uses 1,000 RF per tick during a scan (scanner.scannerUsePerTick) and stores up to 500,000 RF (scanner.scannerMaxRF).[7]
- The projector uses 1,000 RF per tick while in use (scanner.projectorUsePerTick) and stores up to 500,000 RF (scanner.projectorMaxRF).[7]
- Scanner and projector shapes can be up to 512 blocks across (scanner.maxScannerDimension).[7]
Client options
builder.showProgressHud is on, so you see a holographic progress display above the builder. The projector sound volume (scanner.baseProjectorVolume) is 0.4, and 0.0 turns it off. If you find the sound annoying, this is the option to change.[6]
What changed in RFTools Builder between versions?
2 parts
FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships RFTools Builder 1.21-7.0.6. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0.3 or earlier, so the two changelogs below cover the versions that matter for the current release.[8]
1.21-7.0.5
- The Patchouli manual documentation was updated and expanded.[9]
- The Scanner, Projector and Composer were added.[9]
1.21-7.0.6 (the version in this pack)
- A crash in the scanner that happened in some rare situations was fixed.[10]
- A bug in the shape card on servers was fixed. It showed up when you manually selected the corners with a dimension that exceeds 512. The fix came from the contributor derrickmehaffy.[10]
If you play on a server and use the shape card with large selections, the 7.0.6 fix is the one that affects you.[10]
