What is Powah!?

1 part

Powah! is a tech mod about generating, storing and transmitting energy. The pack ships version 6.2.10. Normally it covers generation (Furnators, Magmators, Solar Panels, Thermo Generators and the Reactor multiblocks). It also adds Energy Cables, Energy Cells, the upgradable Ender Network, Player Transmitters and the Energizing crafting system.[1][2]

Watch out: This pack's quest book says all methods of generating energy with Powah were removed. You still use the mod to store and move power, but the power itself has to come from other mods.[3]

Where it sits in the quest book

Powah quests live in the "Power Generation" chapter, in the group "Resources & Logistics". It is chapter 9 of 29 in the book and has 47 quests. The chapter is mostly about generating and managing power across several mods, and its intro quest "Power & You" quest explains how FE, RF and EU relate.[3]

The Powah entry point is "Managing Power With Powah!" quest, which asks you for Dielectric Paste to craft the first components. The sources show no earlier quest required for it. Six quests follow directly after it:[3]

The "Power Generation" chapter has 12 more quests that this guide doesn't cover, so check the quest book for those. Mods like Mekanism Generators, Modern Industrialization and Excessive Utilities also have quests in the same chapter.[3]

How do you get started with Powah!?

6 parts

Here's the thing to know before you start: this pack's quest book says all methods of generating energy with Powah have been removed. It still calls the mod a great way to transfer and store the power you make elsewhere, so the first steps are about building those pieces, in this order.[3]

In the quest book, the Power Generation chapter (group "Resources & Logistics") has the quest "Managing Power With Powah!" quest. Its task is to get Dielectric Paste, and the other Powah quests in that chapter come after it. Most of the text of the Getting Started chapter is not covered here, so check the quest book for it.[3][4]

Step 1: Dielectric Paste

Dielectric Paste is the base for the first components, so make it first. There are two crafting recipes. One makes 24 paste per craft and the other makes 16.[3][5]

Recipe id: powah:crafting/dielectric_paste_2

Step 2: The Manual

The mod's own project page points to the Manual for a good explanation of its content, and it is cheap to craft. Grab the Manual (Powah!) now and use it as an in-game reference.[1][5]

Step 3: Store power

The quest "Energy Cells" quest has you make Energy Cells to store power, plus Batteries. Batteries are charged from the cells and can then charge items in your inventory in the early game. The starter Battery (Starter) is the first one, and its recipe uses the paste you just made.[3][5]

Step 4: The Energizing Orb

The Energizing Orb energizes items, and it needs at least one Energizing Rod in range to work. The quest "Energizing Orb" quest asks you to make an orb and a rod, and says the orb is how you create the different tiers of items in the mod, so it unlocks everything after the basics.[3][6]

The Orb needs no energy itself, but the rods do. They have to sit on cables or another Forge Energy block to work. In this pack the rods must be within 4 blocks of the Orb, which is set by general.energizing_range. The quest also warns that basic rods struggle with higher tier materials like Niotic Crystals, so plan to upgrade them as you go. Start with the Energizing Rod (Starter).[3][6][7]

Step 5: Energized Steel

Once your orb is running, make Energized Steel. The pack changed this energizing recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the base mod. You'll need the steel for the hardened tier, for example in the hardened battery and one of the hardened cable recipes.[5]

Watch out: Some recipes in this pack differ from the mod defaults. The Energized Steel and Nitro Crystal energizing recipes are marked as changed by the pack, and the crystal blocks have pack-added energizing recipes. Check the recipe in the pack, not an old guide.[5]

Where to go next

After "Managing Power With Powah!" quest, the quest book branches into "Energy Cables" quest, "Ender Cells" quest, a quest in "Power Generation" and a quest in "Power Generation". Ender Cells store energy on a channel of the ender network, and a Player Transmitter charges items in a linked player's inventory. Do them in whatever order suits your base.[3][8][9]

How does Powah! work?

6 parts

Powah! is a tech mod about generating, storing and moving energy. Everything runs on Forge Energy (FE), and nearly every machine comes in seven tiers: Starter, Basic, Hardened, Blazing, Niotic, Spirited and Nitro. Each tier has its own capacity and transfer rate, and generators also have a generation rate. This pack sets all of those in config/powah.json5.[1][6][7]

Generators

The Furnator burns solid furnace fuel like coal or wood. Higher tiers burn the fuel faster, but the energy gained per fuel tick stays the same. In this pack that value, general.energy_per_fuel_tick, is 30.[7][10]

Furnator generation rates climb from 20 at Starter to 40,000 at Nitro.[7]

The Magmator turns high temperature fluids into energy, and lava is the one you will use. The mod's data gives lava an energy_produced value of 10,000. Its generation rate climbs from 10 at Starter to 40,000 at Nitro.[7][11][12]

The Solar Panel makes energy while it is exposed to sunlight, and any block above it stops production. Its generation rate climbs from 20 at Starter to 2,000 at Nitro.[7][13]

A Lens Of Ender applied to a panel lets it see through blocks. You get the lens by using a Photoelectric Pane on an Enderman or Endermite, and this pack has general.lens_of_ender switched on.[7][14][15]

The Thermo Generator sits on top of a hot block or fluid and needs a coolant fluid like water to run. The mod's data lists lava at a temperature of 1,000, a magma block at 800 and a Block Of Blazing Crystal at 2,800. Water counts as a coolant with a temperature of 0. Its generation rate climbs from 20 at Starter to 2,000 at Nitro.[7][16][17][18][19]

The Reactor

The Reactor is a multiblock generator fuelled by Uraninite. To build it, hold 36 Reactor blocks and place them in a 3x4 replaceable area. The reactor then finishes building itself. If you are short on blocks, the game tells you how many more you need.[15][20]

In the mod's data, Uraninite has a fuelAmount of 100 and a temperature of 700. The reactor has a generation mode: it stops when it is full and starts again when it has less than 70% energy. Its generation factor in this pack climbs from 250 at Starter to 500,000 at Nitro.[7][15][21]

Dry Ice is mainly there to cool reactors. The mod's solid coolant data gives each coolant an amount and a temperature:[22][23]

You can find Dry Ice underground below level 64, or make it by energizing two pieces of blue ice.[5][22]

Dry IceMod recipe

Energizing (powah)

  • 2× any blue ice

Recipe id: powah:energizing/dry_ice

The pack changed what Uraninite ore drops. Poor ore (stone and deepslate) gives 1 Uranium Dust, deepslate normal ore gives 2, and dense ore gives the biggest amount of the three. Fortune affects the amount, and Silk Touch still gives you the ore block. The mod's default is Raw Uraninite instead.[24][25][26][27][28][29]

Energizing

The Energizing Orb energizes items, but it needs at least one Energizing Rod in range of a 9x9 area. Speed depends on how many rods you have and on their tier, since the rod's I/O rate is what counts.[6]

The pack sets general.energizing_range to 4.[7]

The orb needs no energy itself, but the rods must sit on cables or any other FE block to get power. Rod transfer rates in this pack climb from 100 at Starter to 200,000 at Nitro, and capacity from 10,000 to 20,000,000. Use the Wrench in Link Mode to link the orb and its rods. If you are too far away, you get an out of range message.[6][7][15][30]

Energizing is how you make several key materials. The pack added or changed these energizing recipes:[5]

Energizing a snowball also gives you a Charged Snowball, which spawns a lightning bolt where it lands or hits a mob.[31]

Storage and cables

Energy Cables move power between machines. Right-click a cable with the Wrench in Config mode to change its transfer mode. Each cable tier has its own limit, from 500 at Starter to 1,000,000 at Nitro.[7][30][32]

Tip: Cable tiers cap throughput. A Nitro Furnator has a transfer rate of 160,000, but a Starter cable moves only 500, so match your cable tier to the machine feeding it.[7][32]

Energy Cells store FE. A Starter cell holds 1,000,000 with a transfer rate of 1,000, and a Nitro cell holds 2,000,000,000 with a transfer rate of 2,000,000. Batteries have the same capacities and rates, but they charge items while they sit in your inventory.[7][33][34]

A Creative Energy Cell exists in this pack. It is crafted from an Energy Cell (Nitro) plus a Creative Ascension item.[5][34]

Energy Cell (Creative)Added by the pack

Shapeless (kubejs)

Recipe id: ftb:creative_energy_cell_powah

The Energy Discharger drains FE from charged items into an internal buffer, and you pull that power out with cables. The Energy Hopper does the opposite: it charges chargeable items inside an adjacent inventory like a chest. Hopper charging rates in this pack climb from 500 at Starter to 1,000,000 at Nitro.[7][35][36]

The Ender Network

An Ender Cell stores energy on one channel of its owner's ender network. You can reach that energy from anywhere in the world, as long as the cell you are transferring from or to has an active channel with a valid capacity.[8]

To add capacity to a channel, Shift-click a Battery or Energy Cell onto the Ender Cell GUI. If the item holds energy, that energy is applied to the channel too. An Ender Gate moves energy between the block next to it and the ender network, but you cannot upgrade the network from a gate.[33][34][37]

The number of channels depends on tier, and cells and gates use the same numbers in this pack: 1 at Starter, 2 at Basic, 3 at Hardened, 5 at Blazing, 7 at Niotic, 9 at Spirited and 12 at Nitro. Ender Cells move 1,000 at Starter up to 2,000,000 at Nitro, while Ender Gates move 500 up to 1,000,000.[7]

Player Transmitter

The Player Transmitter charges items wirelessly in a linked player's inventory, including armor slots and the off-hand. With a normal Binding Card it works anywhere in the same dimension, and with a Dimensional Binding Card it works across dimensions. Right-click a card to bind it to yourself before you put it in the transmitter.[9][38][39]

The Dimensional card comes from using a Binding Card on an Enderman or Endermite, and this pack has general.dimensional_binding_card on.[7][15]

Crafting the transmitter needs a Player Aerial Pearl, which you get by using an Aerial Pearl on a Zombie or Husk. This pack has general.player_aerial_pearl on.[7][15][40]

Transmitter charging rates climb from 500 at Starter to 1,000,000 at Nitro.[7]

How do you progress through Powah!?

5 parts

In this pack, Powah! is your power storage and delivery system, not your power source. The quest book states that every method of generating energy with Powah has been removed. So the Furnator, Magmator, Reactor and Solar Panel pages in the in-game guide describe the mod in general, not what you can build here. You make power with other mods and use Powah to move it around and store it.[3]

Where it sits in the quest book

Powah lives in the Power Generation chapter, in the Resources & Logistics group (chapter 9 of 29). It starts at "Managing Power With Powah!" quest, which only asks you to make Dielectric Paste. Early on, "The Start of Power" quest in Getting Started points you to this chapter.[3][4]

Six quests branch off the starter quest, and the tiers below are how you progress through them:[3]

  • "Energy Cables" quest: cables for moving energy between machines. Powah cables have no storage buffer, and more cables don't raise their throughput.[3]
  • "Energy Cells" quest: Energy Cells for storage, plus Batteries you charge from the cells. Batteries can power items in your inventory in the early game.[3]
  • "Energizing Orb" quest: the Energizing Orb and Energizing Rods, which make the higher tier materials.[3]
  • "Ender Cells" quest: Ender Cells, which store power on a frequency you can reach from any dimension with another Ender Cell or an Ender Gate.[3]
  • a quest in "Power Generation": Ender Gates, which you place on a machine to feed it power wirelessly from your Ender Cell network.[3]
  • a quest in "Power Generation": Player Transmitters and the Binding Card, for powering items in your inventory. Use the card on an Enderman to get a Dimensional Binding Card, which works across dimensions.[3]

There is also a link from the main questline. a quest in "Getting Started" in Getting Started says that once you are generating some energy, Powah and Actually Additions let you craft a Gateway that gives you the Sculk Shriekers for VoidShimmer Goo.[4]

The seven tiers

Every Powah machine family follows the same seven tiers: Starter, Basic, Hardened, Blazing, Niotic, Spirited and Nitro. The cable, cell, gate, transmitter and rod quests each accept any one of those seven, so you can complete them at whatever tier you have reached.[3]

You can't skip tiers. The Energy Cable and Battery recipes for each tier take the previous tier's cable or battery as an input, from Starter up to Nitro. The Blazing Energy Cell likewise needs a Hardened Energy Cell. Each step up also adds its own crystal: Blazing, Niotic, Spirited or Nitro Crystal for Blazing and above, and Energized Steel at Hardened.[5]

Getting started: paste and the Orb

Dielectric Paste is the first thing you need, and the recipe is cheap and makes a batch.[5]

The Orb needs no power itself, but the Energizing Rods around it do. Put the rods within 4 blocks of the Orb and feed them energy through cables or any FE block. More rods and higher rod tiers make energizing faster. Basic rods struggle with higher tier materials such as Niotic Crystals, so upgrading your rods is a must as you progress.[3][6]

Crystals: what the pack changed

The pack changes several energizing recipes from the mod's versions. The recipes below are the ones that apply here.[5]

How does Powah! work with other mods?

3 parts

In this pack Powah! is mainly your power transfer and storage mod, and most of its links to other mods come through recipes. The quest "Managing Power With Powah!" quest tells you the pack has removed all methods of generating energy with Powah, so the generating itself is left to other mods.[3]

Where it sits in the quest book

In the quest book, Powah's quests sit in the "Power Generation" chapter, in the "Resources & Logistics" group (chapter 9 of 29). Next to them are generator quests from other mods, like the "LV Diesel Generator" quest from Modern Industrialization, Draconic Evolution's Generator and the Excessive Utilities generators for the Rainbow Generator. The chapter has 47 quests and not all of them are covered here, so check the quest book for the rest.[3]

In the quest book, "Managing Power With Powah!" quest comes first. "Energy Cables" quest, "Ender Cells" quest, a quest in "Power Generation", "Energizing Orb" quest, "Energy Cells" quest and a quest in "Power Generation" all come after it. The cables quest also compares Powah's cables with Mekanism's, saying Powah cables can be faster when connected individually but have no storage buffer.[3]

The pack adds an energizing recipe that turns a Blazegold Block from Just Dire Things into a Block Of Blazing Crystal.[5]

Powah items also show up in the Gateways mod. The pack's recipe for a Gate Pearl uses a Blazing Crystal alongside items from Actually Additions and vanilla.[5]

Modern Industrialization's Plutonium Battery can be made with a Powah battery. The pack adds two versions, one for the EnderIO alloy smelter and one for the Extended Industrialization alloy smelter.[5]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Powah!?

              3 parts

All of the Powah! quests sit in the Power Generation chapter, in the quest book group "Resources & Logistics". Most of that chapter is about other mods. The Powah! quests are a starter quest and a handful of follow-ups.[3]

              The starting quest

Everything begins with "Managing Power With Powah!" quest. It asks you to hand in Dielectric Paste, and its text says you need the paste to craft the initial components. The quest text also says that all methods of generating energy with Powah have been removed in this pack, and that the mod is still useful for transferring and storing the power you generate elsewhere.[3]

              What unlocks after it

Each of these quests lists the starter quest as its only prerequisite, so you can take them in whatever order suits your base.[3]

              • "Energy Cables" quest: asks for any tier of Powah energy cable, such as Energy Cable (Starter). The quest text calls them your basic cables for moving energy between machines. It says they are very fast and can beat Mekanism cables when connected individually, but they have no storage buffer and more cables do not raise their throughput.[3]
              • "Ender Cells" quest: asks for any tier of Ender Cell, such as Ender Cell (Starter). The quest text says you pump power into one to store it on a frequency, which can be reached from any dimension with another Ender Cell or an Ender Gate.[3]
              • a quest in "Power Generation": asks for any tier of Ender Gate, such as Ender Gate (Starter). The quest text says a gate can be placed on any machine to transfer power wirelessly, and that it only works if your Ender Cell network has enough power.[3]
              • "Energizing Orb" quest: asks for the Energizing Orb and any tier of Energizing Rod, such as Energizing Rod (Starter). The quest text says the Rods need power and must be within 4 blocks of the Orb, and that the Orb is how you create the different tiers of items in the mod. It also warns that Basic Energizing Rods will struggle to make higher tier materials like Niotic Crystals, so it calls upgrading them a must as you progress.[3]
              • "Energy Cells" quest: asks for any tier of Energy Cell, such as Energy Cell (Starter), and any tier of Battery, such as Battery (Starter). The quest text says Energy Cells store your power, that you can craft Batteries and charge them from the Cells, and that Batteries can then charge items in your inventory in the early game.[3]
              • a quest in "Power Generation": asks for any tier of Player Transmitter, such as Player Transmitter (Starter), and a Binding Card. The quest text says to make a Binding Card, use it in your hand to claim it, then place it in the Transmitter so it powers your inventory. It adds that using the card on an Enderman converts it into a Dimensional Binding Card, which lets the Transmitter work across dimensions.[3]

Powah! in the Getting Started chapter

Powah! is also mentioned in the Getting Started chapter (group "Main Questline"). The a quest in "Getting Started" quest comes after "Proper Materials" quest. Its text says that once you have started generating some energy, you will be able to get into the Powah and Actually Additions mods to craft a Gateway that gives you the Sculk Shriekers needed to upgrade your Blazebloom Goo into VoidShimmer Goo. The a quest in "Getting Started" quest comes after it.[4]

Also in that chapter, "The Start of Power" quest asks for Redstone, and its text points you to the Power Generation chapter to learn about the different ways to generate power.[4]

              Which Powah! config options matter?

              3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Powah! keeps all its numbers in one file, config/powah.json5, and this pack ships its own copy. It covers a handful of general options plus per-tier values for every generator, cable, cell and gadget. Tiers go from starter through basic, hardened, blazing, niotic and spirited up to nitro, and each step raises the numbers.[41]

Unverified The sources don't include Powah!'s default config values, so this section can't confirm which settings this pack changed from the mod defaults. Every value below is what the pack's config file contains.

The generation rates show how far apart the generators get by the top tier. Here they are, from starter to nitro, as the pack sets them.[41]

What changed in Powah! between versions?

              1 part

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.0.3 ships with Powah! 6.2.10. The pack's mod list shows it was first included in 1.0.3 or an earlier release, so you can't tell from it exactly which pack version brought it in.[2]

              Powah! 6.2.10

              • Default block states are now registered for all of the mod's blocks. This is the only change listed in the 6.2.10 changelog, and it is a bug fix rather than new content.[42]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Powah! were available, so any changes to the mod between Aero releases are unconfirmed.
