Dyson Cube Project is a mod in FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.13.0, where it is version 1.0.5. Build a Dyson Sphere around the sun and harvest its power (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Dyson Cube Project?

2 parts

Dyson Cube Project lets you build your own Dyson Sphere megastructure in Minecraft and harvest the power of the sun, producing up to 250M FE/t. This pack includes version 1.0.5 of the mod.[1][2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book covers the mod in a single quest, "Harvesting The Sun" quest, in the "Power Generation" chapter. That chapter is in the "Resources & Logistics" group and is chapter 10 of 31 in the book. The quest comes after the Identification Chamber quest. It asks you to obtain EM Rail Ejector Controller, Ray Receiver Controller, Solar Sail Package and Beam Package.[2]

The chapter has 41 quests in total. Five of them are not covered here, so check the quest book itself for those.[2]

How it works

  • Start by setting up at least one EM Rail Ejector to send items to the sun. More than one is definitely recommended.[2]
  • Ejectors only work on non-rainy days. They stop at night and briefly when the sun is at its peak. A Celestal Manipulator can help you skip night-time automatically.[2]
  • With power, the ejectors work faster and ramp up how many items they send each time.[2]
  • Each ejector takes either Beams or Sails, placed through the bottom-middle block of the structure. Sails are what actually increase your power generation, and Beams let your Sphere accept more of them.[2]
  • In this pack, each beam supports 20 solar sails. Your network can hold a maximum of 6,250,000 sails, which takes around 312,500 beams.[2]
  • Once sails are sent, harvest the power with Ray Receivers. Each one can output up to 50 Million RF/t.[2]
  • Other players can join your Sphere by interacting with any multiblock and clicking the "Subscribe to this sphere" button on the bottom left.[2]
Watch out: You must buy the blueprint for the Ray Receiver from the shop before you can make it inside a Replicator Network.[2]

How do you get started with Dyson Cube Project?

5 parts

Dyson Cube Project is all about building a Dyson Sphere and harvesting the sun's power. In this pack's quest book it lives in the Power Generation chapter (group Resources & Logistics), in the quest "Harvesting The Sun" quest, which comes after the Identification Chamber quest. That quest asks you for four things: the EM Rail Ejector Controller, the Ray Receiver Controller, the Solar Sail Package and the Beam Package. Here is a sensible order to tackle them.[2]

Start with Beams

Beams are what let your sphere accept more sails, and sails are what actually raise your power generation. In this pack each beam supports 20 sails (the mod default is 6), set by Config.BEAM_TO_SOLAR_PANEL_RATIO. The pack changed the Beam recipe, and one craft gives you 2 beams.[2][3][4]

Harvest with the Ray Receiver

After you have sent sails, you harvest the power with Ray Receivers. Each one can output up to 50,000,000 RF/t, matching Config.RAY_RECEIVER_EXTRACT_POWER.[2][4]

Tip: EM Rail Ejectors only work on non rainy days. They stop at night and briefly when the sun is at its peak. The quest suggests a Celestal Manipulator to skip night-time automatically.[2]

Other players can join your sphere by interacting with any multiblock and clicking the "Subscribe to this sphere" button on the bottom left.[2][5]

How does Dyson Cube Project work?

5 parts

Dyson Cube Project is all about building a Dyson sphere: solar sails get ejected towards the sun, and a Ray Receiver Controller pulls power back out of the sphere. The mod's own advancement text says it best: "TODAY WE STEAL THE SUN!" Here is what the sources confirm about how it works in this pack.[4][5]

The Dyson Information screen

The mod has a Dyson Information screen that tracks your sphere. These are the readouts and options it shows:[5]

  • Beams: the beam count. You may also see the message "Needs more beams".[5]
  • Sails: shown as a current/maximum pair.[5]
  • Progress: shown as a percentage.[5]
  • Power Gen and Power Con: generation and consumption, both in FE.[5]
  • Subscribe to this sphere, or unsubscribe from all spheres. Unsubscribing returns you to your personal sphere.[5]

There are also advancements for sphere progress at 5%, 15%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the sails ejected. The option Config.SHOW_AT_MAX_PROGRESS ("Always show sphere at max progress") is set to false in this pack.[4][5]

Sending sails and beams up

The EM Rail Ejector Controller is the block behind the ejecting. One of the mod's tooltips reads "Power Optional, with power it allows to ramp up how many beams/sails are ejected".[5]

When power is used, the pack has changed the cost. Config.RAIL_EJECTOR_CONSUME is 80 each tick per sent item, up from the mod default of 40. Its buffer, Config.RAIL_EJECTOR_POWER_BUFFER, is 400,000, the same as the mod default.[4]

A Solar Sail Package has a tooltip that tells you how many solar sails it contains.[5]

Power from the sphere

Each sail generates power for the sphere. Config.POWER_PER_SAIL is 40 in this pack, double the mod default of 20. So each sail is worth more here than in the base mod.[4]

The Ray Receiver Controller takes that power back out. Config.RAY_RECEIVER_EXTRACT_POWER is 50,000,000 per tick, and its buffer, Config.RAY_RECEIVER_POWER_BUFFER, is 100,000,000. Both are the mod defaults.[4][5]

Beams and sphere size

Config.BEAM_TO_SOLAR_PANEL_RATIO sets how many solar panels each beam can support. The pack raised it to 20 from the default of 6, so each beam goes further.[4]

The pack also lowered the cap. Config.MAX_SOLAR_PANELS is 6,250,000 here, compared with the mod default of 50,000,000.[4]

Crafting the key items

The pack has changed the recipes for each of the items below, so use these versions rather than the base mod's.[3]

How do you progress through Dyson Cube Project?

2 parts

In this pack the Dyson Cube Project is covered by a single quest, "Harvesting The Sun" quest. You'll find it in the Power Generation chapter (group "Resources & Logistics", chapter 10 of 31), and it comes after the Identification Chamber quest. The quest asks for four items: EM Rail Ejector Controller, Ray Receiver Controller, Solar Sail Package and Beam Package.[2]

The payoff is big: the quest says a full Dyson Sphere can produce up to 250M FE/t.[2]

How the progression works

  1. Set up at least one EM Rail Ejector to send items to the sun. More than one is recommended. They only work on non-rainy days, stop at night, and pause briefly when the sun is at its peak. A Celestal Manipulator helps you skip night-time automatically.[2]
  2. Give the ejectors power. When powered, they work faster and ramp up how many items they send each time.[2]
  3. Load either Beams or Sails into each Rail Ejector through the bottom-middle block of the structure.[2]
  4. Beams let your sphere accept more Sails. Each Beam supports 20 Solar Sails in this pack, and the network tops out at 6,250,000 Sails, which takes around 312,500 Beams.[2]
  5. Solar Sails are what actually increase your power generation.[2]
  6. Once Sails are in the sphere, harvest the power with Ray Receivers. Each one can output up to 50 Million RF/t.[2]

Other players can join your sphere by interacting with any multiblock and clicking the "Subscribe to this sphere" button on the bottom left.[2]

Crafting the quest items

The pack changes the recipes for the Beam, Beam Package, Solar Sail, Solar Sail Package and EM Rail Ejector Controller, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. These are the in-pack versions.[3]

How does Dyson Cube Project work with other mods?

2 parts

Dyson Cube Project doesn't stand alone in this pack. The pack changed the crafting of its key parts, so you need materials from several other mods before you can start building your Dyson Sphere.[3]

Crafting chain

Beam is the first link. The pack's recipe makes 2 Beams per craft and combines items from Ender IO and FTB Materials with a sky steel ingot.[3]

In the quest book

The quest "Harvesting The Sun" quest sits in the Power Generation chapter, in the Resources & Logistics group (chapter 10 of 31). It comes after the Identification Chamber quest. It asks for EM Rail Ejector Controller, Ray Receiver Controller, Solar Sail Package and Beam Package.[2]

The rest of that chapter is made up of other power sources, such as Modern Industrialization generators and turbines, Mekanism solar and wind generators, Excessive Utilities generators and Create New Age generator coils. Part of the chapter's text is not shown here, so check the quest book for the rest.[2]

The quest also ties the mod into other parts of the pack. It mentions that a Celestal Manipulator will help you skip night-time automatically. It also notes that you must buy a blueprint from the shop before making the Ray Receiver inside a Replicator Network. Here are the numbers it gives:[2]

  • Each Beam supports 20 solar sails in this pack.[2]
  • A network can hold at most 6,250,000 Sails, which takes around 312,500 Beams.[2]
  • Each Ray Receiver can output up to 50 Million RF/t, and the quest says the mod can produce up to 250M FE/t overall.[2]
Watch out: Buy the Ray Receiver blueprint from the shop before you try to make it inside a Replicator Network. The quest calls this out as a note.[2]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Dyson Cube Project?

2 parts

Dyson Cube Project has a single quest in the pack's quest book. It sits in the Power Generation chapter, which is chapter 10 of 31 in the Resources & Logistics group. The quest is "Harvesting The Sun" quest, and it comes after the Identification Chamber quest.[2]

What Harvesting The Sun asks for

The quest has four item tasks, and you hand in one of each:[2]

The quest text says the mod lets you build a Dyson Sphere and harvest the sun for up to 250M FE/t. It suggests setting up at least one EM Rail Ejector to send items to the sun, though more are recommended.[2]

How the quest says it works

  • EM Rail Ejectors only work on non rainy days. They stop at night and briefly when the sun is at its peak. A Celestal Manipulator can help you skip night-time automatically.[2]
  • With power, the ejectors work faster and send more items each time.[2]
  • In each ejector you place either Beams or Sails through the bottom-middle block of the structure. Beams let your Sphere accept more Sails, and the Sails are what actually raise your power generation.[2]
  • In this pack, each beam supports 20 solar sails. The network can hold a maximum of 6,250,000 Sails, which takes around 312,500 Beams.[2]
  • Once Solar Sails are sent, you harvest the power with Ray Receivers.

Which Dyson Cube Project config options matter?

3 parts

Dyson Cube Project keeps its settings in a single file, config/dysoncubeproject/dysoncubeproject.toml. This pack changes several of them from the mod defaults, and those are the ones that shape how your sphere scales.[4]

Values the pack changed

Values left at the mod default

The power buffers and the receiver output are untouched by the pack, so they match the mod defaults.[4]

Display option

Config.SHOW_AT_MAX_PROGRESS is set to false in this pack. When it is true, the sphere is always shown at max progress.[4]

Tip: If you plan around sphere size, remember the pack's panel cap of 6,250,000 and its beam ratio of 20, not the mod's 50,000,000 and 6. Guides written for the plain mod will not match this pack on those numbers.[4]
