What is Chipped?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Chipped is a building mod that gives you a huge range of decorative block variants. The project page advertises over 11,000 unique building blocks, from stained glass variations to concrete, prismarine and gilded blackstone. The textures are hand-made in the vanilla style, and many of them are connected textures powered by Athena.[1]

If you've ever used Chisel, you'll get the idea straight away. Chipped is inspired by it and is built for anyone who wants more variety in their builds, whether that's a castle, a nether fortress or a plain dirt house.[1]

How you use it

You start by crafting one of the seven tables, which turn various vanilla blocks into their chipped variants. The tables all look different but work the same way, so pick whichever suits your build, or make a few different ones and spread them around your base.[1]

In this pack

The pack ships Chipped 4.0.2, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]

Unverified The sources I have don't show where Chipped fits in the pack's progression, and they don't show any recipe changes. Check the recipes in-game before you plan around them. This site does hold FTB Skies 2: Aero's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you get started with Chipped?

3 parts

Chipped is a building mod that adds a huge range of decorative variants of blocks. The project page counts over 11,000 unique building blocks, many with connected textures. To start out, you craft a table.[1]

Step 1: craft a table

The project page says there are seven tables. Each one looks different but they all work the same, so pick the look you like, or make a few and spread them around your base. In this pack the seven are the Alchemy Bench, Botanist Workbench, Carpenters Table, Glassblower, Loom Table, Mason Table and Tinkering Table.[1][3]

I'd start with the Mason Table, because the Chisel is crafted from it. Here is the in-pack recipe:[3]

Next: make the matching tool

Most tables have a companion item in this pack, crafted from that table. The Chisel goes with the Mason Table, so it's the first one to make.[3]

The other tables work the same way. The Loom Table has Needles, the Tinkering Table has the Multimeter, the Botanist Workbench has the Watering Can, and the Alchemy Bench has the Alchemy Book. Their recipes are:[3]

Extra: stonecutting and Create cutting

The pack's recipe dump has 6,930 stonecutting recipes that take Chipped blocks and make Chipped blocks. One example turns any acacia planks into an Acacia Planks Mosaic.[3]

The pack also adds Create cutting recipes for Chipped blocks. They turn reinforced logs into their stripped versions, and they make nailed planks in batches of 6. Here is one example:[3]

6× Nailed Oak PlanksAdded by the pack

Cutting (create)

  • any compat chipped nailed oak runtime generated

Recipe id: create:cutting/runtime_generated/compat/create/tag_runtime_generated/compat/chipped/nailed_oak_to_nailed_oak_planks

Added by the pack, makes 6 Nailed Oak Planks per cut.

How does Chipped work?

4 parts

Chipped is a building mod, so this section is short. The sources describe it as a block-variety mod with over 11,000 unique building blocks, and they say nothing about power, fluids, multiblocks or item automation for it. What they do cover is how you get the tables and how block variants are converted.[1]

The tables

To start out, you craft one of seven tables that change vanilla blocks into their chipped variants. They all look different but work the same, so pick whichever fits your build, or place a few different ones around your base.[1]

In this pack, the Carpenters Table, Alchemy Bench and Botanist Workbench each have a normal crafting-grid recipe. Here they are:[3]

Tools made from tables

Some tables lead on to other items. The Mason Table, Tinkering Table and Alchemy Bench each have a follow-up item: the Chisel, the Multimeter and the Alchemy Book. All three are shapeless recipes, shown below.[3]

Converting variants

The recipe dump lists 6,930 stonecutting recipes that take a Chipped block and make a Chipped block, built on 273 different ingredients, and all 273 of those ingredients are this mod's. Blocks such as Acacia Planks Mosaic, Acacia Planks Panel, Acacia Barrel and Acacia Crate are made this way. The recipes are shown below.[3]

Create cutting (added by the pack)

The pack also adds Create cutting recipes for Chipped wood blocks. Cutting a Reinforced Acacia, Birch or Cherry Log gives you the matching stripped log, for example Reinforced Acacia Log into Reinforced Stripped Acacia Log. The dump lists 8 such log recipes in total, and the same pattern covers other wood types like dark oak, jungle and mangrove.[3]

Cutting (create)

Recipe id: create:cutting/runtime_generated/compat/chipped/reinforced_acacia_log_to_reinforced_stripped_acacia_log

Nailed planks work similarly. Cutting any block from the matching nailed tag gives you 6 planks, such as Nailed Acacia Planks, Nailed Birch Planks, Nailed Cherry Planks or Nailed Crimson Planks.[3]

How do you progress through Chipped?

4 parts

Chipped works differently from a tiered mod in this pack. The recipe dump shows no upgrade ladder. You craft a set of workbenches from vanilla items, make a handful of tools from them, and then use cutting recipes to turn blocks into a huge range of decorative variants.[3]

First: the workbenches

The workbench recipes are marked as mod recipes in the dump, so the pack hasn't changed them. They give you the Botanist Workbench, Glassblower, Carpenters Table, Loom Table, Mason Table, Alchemy Bench and Tinkering Table. The recipes below show each one.[3]

Next: the tools

The tools are all shapeless recipes, and each one builds on one of the workbenches above. They are the Chisel, Saw, Needles, Multimeter, Watering Can and Alchemy Book. The recipes below show each one.[3]

Then: variants by cutting

The bulk of the content is stonecutting. The dump counts 6,930 stonecutting recipes that take Chipped blocks and make Chipped blocks, with 6,930 different results from 273 different ingredients, and all 273 of those ingredients are the mod's own. The acacia planks tag has the variants Acacia Planks Mosaic, Acacia Planks Panel and Acacia Planks Shavings, and the amethyst block tag has Amethyst Block Bricks and Amethyst Block Scales. Here is one example, the acacia mosaic.[3]

Stonecutting

  • any acacia plank

Recipe id: chipped_express:stonecutting_chipped_acacia_planks_mosaic_from_chipped_acacia_planks

Pack-added Create cutting

The pack adds Create cutting recipes for some Chipped wood blocks. Cutting a reinforced log gives its stripped version, for example Reinforced Oak Log into Reinforced Stripped Oak Log. Cutting an item from a nailed tag gives 6 nailed planks, such as Nailed Oak Planks. The crimson and warped lines also give 6 Smooth Crimson Planks or Smooth Warped Planks from their smooth tags. The dump marks these recipes as added by the pack, not as part of the base mod.[3]

How does Chipped work with other mods?

2 parts

Chipped is a building mod, so its links to the rest of the pack are small. The recipe dump shows two kinds: a Mekanism crushing recipe for Chipped leaf blocks, and upgrades for Sophisticated Backpacks and Sophisticated Storage that are built from Chipped's tables.[1][3]

Chipped leaves into Bio Fuel (Mekanism)

The pack adds a Mekanism crushing recipe for each Chipped leaf variant. Crush one and you get 2 Bio Fuel. It covers every variant in the dump: apple, cherry, dead, frosted, golden, golden apple, golden cherry, magenta flower, orange, red and white flower leaves, each in oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia and dark oak.[3]

Every one of these recipes gives the same result, so it doesn't matter which variant you feed in. Golden Oak Leaves and Frosted Birch Leaves both work, for example. Here is one recipe, with Apple Oak Leaves:[3]

2× Bio FuelAdded by the pack

Crushing (mekanism)

Recipe id: ftb:biocrushing_chipped_apple_oak_leaves

The other leaf variants follow the same pattern.

Crafting tables as backpack and storage upgrades

Each of Chipped's seven tables has a matching upgrade for both Sophisticated Backpacks and Sophisticated Storage, and the pack changes these from the mod's own versions. The tables covered are the Alchemy Bench, Botanist Workbench, Carpenters Table, Glassblower, Loom Table, Mason Table and Tinkering Table.[1][3]

The backpack versions come out as items like Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade. The storage versions are items like Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade. Here are both Alchemy Bench upgrades:[3]

The other six tables work the same way. For example, there are also Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade and Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade.[1][3]

Tip: Each table in the dump has its own upgrade item in both mods, so you only need to make the ones for the tables you actually use.[3]

What changed in Chipped between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Chipped 4.0.2 (the NeoForge 1.21.1 build). The mod has been in the pack since Aero 1.0.3 or earlier.[4]

Chipped 4.0.2

The mod's own changelog for 4.0.2 lists these changes:[5]

  • A fix for a bug with crafting.[5]
  • A new JEI feature.[5]
  • Automatic REI grouping.[5]

The changelog doesn't say what the crafting bug was or what the new JEI feature does, so I can't describe them any further.[5]
