What is Sophisticated Storage?
1 part
Sophisticated Storage lets you create and upgrade chests, barrels and more. The pack's quest book describes these storages as able to hold more items, hold fluids, or automate jobs like smelting down ores. This pack ships version 1.5.91 of the mod.[1][2]
To get started, you craft a Sophisticated Chest or Sophisticated Barrel by combining the vanilla item with a redstone torch. If your storage is already placed in the world, you can craft a Basic Tier Upgrade and use it on the storage to upgrade it.[2]
Where it sits in the quest book
The mod is told in the "General Storage" chapter, which is chapter 7 of 31 in the book, in the group "Resources & Logistics". The chapter has 146 quests and covers most of the basic ways to store your items. It also covers other storage mods, like Sophisticated Backpacks, Ender Storage and Functional Drawers.[2]
The main quest is "Sophisticated Storage" quest. In the quest text I have, it has no prerequisite listed. Several quests come after it:[2]
- "Tier Upgrades" quest, for the metal tier upgrades.[2]
- "Limited Barrels" quest, for barrels that work like Functional Storage drawers.[2]
- "Moving Chests" quest, for moving chests with Packing Tape.[2]
- "Creating Storage Networks" quest, for linking all your storage into one network with the Storage Controller.[2]
- "Upgrade Base" quest, because you need an Upgrade Base to craft any of the upgrades.[2]
After the Upgrade Base quest, the book branches into the upgrade quests: "Void Upgrades" quest, "Stack Upgrades" quest, "Useful Upgrades" quest, "Hopper Upgrades" quest and "Pickup Upgrades" quest.[2]
How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?
4 parts
Sophisticated Storage upgrades your chests and barrels so they hold more and can do jobs for you. In the pack's quest book it lives in the "General Storage" chapter (group "Resources & Logistics", chapter 7 of 31). Start with the quest "Sophisticated Storage" quest. Several of the other Sophisticated Storage quests come after it in the book, so you can work through them from there.[2]
Make your first Sophisticated storage
The quest book says you start by crafting a Chest or a Barrel from the vanilla version of that storage. If you already placed a normal chest or barrel in the world, make a Basic Tier Upgrade and use it on the storage to convert it.[2][3]

Tier up your storage
Next comes "Tier Upgrades" quest. You can upgrade storage through the metal tiers by making an upgrade such as Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade and using it on the storage in the world. You can also go to a higher tier straight from the basic tier. The pack changed the Gold and Diamond upgrade recipes, so check these instead of assuming the mod defaults.[2][4]

Here is what each tier gives you in the pack's server config. The same numbers are set for chests, barrels and shulker boxes, and they match the mod defaults.[5]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots (server.CopperChest.inventorySlotCount) and 1 upgrade slot (server.CopperChest.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots (server.IronChest.inventorySlotCount) and 2 upgrade slots (server.IronChest.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots (server.GoldChest.inventorySlotCount) and 3 upgrade slots (server.GoldChest.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots (server.DiamondChest.inventorySlotCount) and 4 upgrade slots (server.DiamondChest.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
Get the Upgrade Base, then pick upgrades
Every storage upgrade needs an Upgrade Base first, as "Upgrade Base" quest explains. The upgrade quests that come after it are the next ones to read.[2]
- "Stack Upgrades" quest: the quest book calls these essential for chests. They raise the stack limit of each slot, and they are much cheaper than the Sophisticated Backpacks versions.[2]
- "Useful Upgrades" quest: quality of life upgrades, for example the Crafting Upgrade lets you craft inside the chest.[2]
- "Void Upgrades" quest: the Void Upgrade voids specific items that go into the chest and comes with a filter.[2]
- "Hopper Upgrades" quest and "Pickup Upgrades" quest: let your storage act like a hopper, or pick up nearby items.[2]
The pack changed the Crafting Upgrade recipe, so use this one.[4]

Move and connect your storage
"Moving Chests" quest introduces Packing Tape. Use the tape on a Sophisticated chest, then break it to get the chest as a single item. When you place it down, the tape disappears.[2]

When you have several containers, read "Creating Storage Networks" quest. A Storage Controller links any storage placed next to it, and you can dump items into the network by right-clicking the Controller. Use Storage Link blocks, linked with the Storage Tool, to add storage that sits apart from your main hub. The controller range is 15 in the pack's config (server.controllerRange).[2][5]

The "General Storage" chapter has many more quests than shown here, so check the quest book for the rest. Option values for this mod are in config/sophisticatedstorage-server.toml.[2][5]
How does Sophisticated Storage work?
5 parts
Sophisticated Storage is built around one idea: a storage block's tier decides how many item slots and upgrade slots it has, and upgrades plus the multiblock tools decide what it can do. Everything below is read from this pack's own config and recipe files.[3][5]
Tiers: slots and upgrade slots
Barrels, chests and shulker boxes all use the same slot counts per tier. The pack leaves every one of these at the mod default, and you can change them in the server config.[5]
- Wood (basic): 27 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot. The plain Shulker Box matches this.[4][5]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot.[5]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots.[5]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots.[5]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots and 4 upgrade slots.[5]
- Netherite: 132 inventory slots and 5 upgrade slots.[5]
Moving up a tier is a crafting recipe, not a GUI action. The pack changed the recipe that turns a plain Barrel into a Copper Barrel, so check this one rather than relying on what you remember from other packs.[4]
Storage Tier Upgrade (sophisticatedstorage)
Recipe id: sophisticatedstorage:copper_barrel
Tier upgrade recipe, changed by the pack.
If a tier upgrade won't go through, the game tells you that upgrading requires a certain number of items of that type. Breaking a big chest or barrel can also be refused: if it would drop more than 200 item entities, the break is cancelled unless you sneak, and a message points you to packing tape. That threshold is server.tooManyItemEntityDrops.[3][5]
Limited barrels
Limited barrels come in four sizes (I to IV) for every tier. Their tooltip shows a slot count and a base stack size multiplier. In the config, the multiplier for basic Limited Barrels is 32, 16, 10 and 8 for I to IV. For Netherite it is 160, 80, 50 and 40. Limited barrels can be dyed to change their color, and that is switched on in this pack.[3][5]
The pack also changed how you go from a Limited Diamond Barrel 1 to a Limited Netherite Barrel 1:[4]
Storage Tier Upgrade Shapeless (sophisticatedstorage)
Recipe id: sophisticatedstorage:limited_netherite_barrel_1
Shapeless tier upgrade, changed by the pack.
Upgrades
The pack caps some upgrade types per storage. Barrels, chests and shulker boxes can hold 1 furnace-type upgrade, 2 stack upgrades and 1 jukebox upgrade. Limited barrels can hold 1 furnace-type upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade. The setting is server.maxUpgradesPerStorage.[5]
The pack's list of items that are not supposed to stack in storage, even when a stack upgrade is inserted, includes bundles and every colour of vanilla shulker box. The list of items disallowed in shulker boxes is empty in this pack.[5]
Each upgrade has its own filter and speed settings, all in the server config. Here are the ones that matter most for automation:[5]
- Hopper upgrade: moves 1 item per transfer, once every 8 ticks, with 2 input filter slots and 2 output filter slots. The advanced version moves up to 4 per transfer every 2 ticks, with 4 filter slots each way.[5]
- Magnet upgrade: picks up items within 3 blocks and has 9 filter slots. The advanced version reaches 5 blocks and has 16 filter slots.[5]
- Smelting, smoking and blasting upgrades, plus their auto versions: speed and fuel efficiency multipliers are all 1, which is vanilla furnace speed. The auto versions have 8 input filter slots and 4 fuel filter slots.[5]
- Pump upgrade: 20 mB per operation as a base rate, multiplied by the number of rows in the storage and by its stack multiplier. It has 4 fluid filter slots.[5]
- XP pump upgrade: can mend items with Mending, using at most 5 experience points per operation.[5]
- Void upgrade and advanced void upgrade: voiding is always available, not just on overflow.[5]
The compacting upgrade has 9 filter slots, and you can only have one compacting upgrade and one compression upgrade in a storage at a time. The compression upgrade can use at most 5 slots, and its slots must follow the compression chain in order. The config also adds the hollow 3x3 shape "111/101/111" to the shapes compacting tries, and lists glowstone and quartz blocks as extra items compression can decompress, into 4 glowstone dust and 4 quartz.[3][5]
Several upgrades are recipes the pack changed. The Alchemy Upgrade and Crafting Upgrade are good examples, and both are built on an Upgrade Base:[4]

The Alchemy Upgrade has 4 filter slots, and the Advanced Alchemy Upgrade has 8. The advanced one automatically uses potions, food with effects or milk buckets, and adds effect filtering options. The recipe to upgrade to the advanced version is also changed by the pack.[3][4][5]

Upgrade settings offer IO modes: Off, Disabled, Pull, Push, and Push & Pull. The crafting upgrade lets you choose whether shift-clicking the result sends it into your inventory or into the storage, and whether the crafting grid and inputs refill.[3]
Storage multiblocks
The Storage Controller lets you deposit items into, and pipe items to and from, a connected multiblock of storages. Its range is 15 blocks in this pack, which is the mod default and can be set between 4 and 64 with server.controllerRange.[3][5]
- Storage Connector: bridges gaps between storage blocks in a multiblock.[3]
- Storage Input: lets you pipe items into the multiblock. It is optimized for low TPS impact.[3]
- Storage Output: lets you pipe items out of the multiblock.[3]
- Storage I/O: lets you pipe items both to and from the multiblock.[3]
- Storage Link: connects a separate multiblock to a controller. You link it with the Storage Tool.[3]
Packing and moving storage
In this pack common.dropPacked is false. Chests and barrels do not automatically drop packed with their contents, so you need packing tape for that.[3][6]
The pack also adds all tiers of barrels, limited barrels and chests to Mekanism's cardboard blacklist tag, along with the Just Dire Things swapper deny tag and the Building Gadgets 2 deny tag. Don't plan on moving them with those tools.[7]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?
5 parts
Sophisticated Storage progression in this pack lives in the "General Storage" quest chapter, in the "Resources & Logistics" group (chapter 7 of 31 in the book). The chapter has 146 quests and covers many storage mods, so only the Sophisticated Storage branch is covered here. Some quests in that chapter are not covered by this guide, so check the quest book for the rest.[2]
Starting out
Everything starts with "Sophisticated Storage" quest. It tells you to craft a Sophisticated Chest or Barrel by combining the vanilla item with a redstone torch. If your storage is already placed in the world, craft the Basic Tier Upgrade and use it on the storage instead.[2]

Once that quest is done, the book branches into "Tier Upgrades" quest, "Limited Barrels" quest, "Moving Chests" quest, "Upgrade Base" quest and "Creating Storage Networks" quest.[2]
Metal tiers
The Tier Upgrades quest has you make an upgrade such as the Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade and use it on storage you have already placed. You can also go to a higher tier straight from basic. In this pack the tier upgrade recipes were changed and they chain together: the Gold upgrade is built on the Iron one, the Diamond upgrade on the Gold one, and the Netherite upgrade on the Diamond one.[2][4]

If you already have a diamond tier container, the pack also has the Diamond to Netherite Tier Upgrade, and that recipe was changed too.[4]
Placed chests have their own tier recipes, and the pack changed these as well. There are recipes for the Copper Chest and Copper Barrel, one that turns a gold chest into a Diamond Chest, and one that turns a diamond chest into a Netherite Chest.[4]

Limited barrels
"Limited Barrels" quest says Limited Barrels work like Drawers from Functional Storage. They hold up to 4 item types but several stacks of each. Limited Barrel I holds a single item type and IV holds 4. The Netherite versions of the I and II limited barrels have pack-changed recipes that start from the Diamond versions.[2][4]
Upgrade Base and upgrades
Every upgrade needs an Upgrade Base, so "Upgrade Base" quest is the gate. These quests come after it:[2]
- "Stack Upgrades" quest: the quest lists Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Tier 1 Plus and Tiers 2 to 5, and calls them essential and much cheaper than the backpack versions. The Stack Upgrade Omega Tier is crafted from Tier 5.[2][4]
- "Useful Upgrades" quest: the Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade and Smelting Upgrade. The Crafting Upgrade lets you craft inside the chest.[2]
- "Void Upgrades" quest: the Void Upgrade and Advanced Void Upgrade, which void specific items and come with a filter. The Void Upgrade recipe was changed by the pack.[2][4]
- "Hopper Upgrades" quest: the Hopper Upgrade lets a chest pull items in from the top or push them out from the bottom. The Advanced Hopper Upgrade recipe was changed by the pack.[2][4]
- "Pickup Upgrades" quest: the Pickup Upgrade is the base level, and the Magnet Upgrade gives more options and a wider range. The Advanced Magnet Upgrade is the next step up.[2]

Networks and moving chests
"Creating Storage Networks" quest introduces the Storage Controller, the Storage Link and the Storage Tool. Any storage placed next to the Controller links to it automatically. Storage Links connect containers that sit away from your main hub, and you use the Storage Tool to link them to the Controller.[2]

For relocating chests, "Moving Chests" quest points you to Packing Tape. Use it on a Sophisticated chest, then break the chest to get it as a single item, and the tape disappears once you place it down.[2]
How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, Sophisticated Storage has in-pack recipes with three other groups of items: Sophisticated Backpacks upgrades, Chipped workbenches, and vanilla chest boats and minecarts. The boat and minecart recipes produce Storage Boat and Storage Minecart.[4]
Sophisticated Backpacks
You can convert upgrades both ways between storage and backpacks. The pack has 40 recipes that turn Sophisticated Storage upgrades into backpack upgrades, and another 40 that go the other direction. For example, Advanced Alchemy Upgrade converts to Advanced Alchemy Upgrade and back. Other upgrades covered include the advanced compacting, feeding, filter, jukebox, magnet, pickup and void upgrades, plus Alchemy Upgrade and Auto-blasting Upgrade. These are the mod's own recipes, not pack changes.[4]

Backpack to storage
The quest book connects the two mods too. The chapter "General Storage" (group "Resources & Logistics", chapter 7 of 31) has a "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest quest that asks for Backpack. The storage quests then compare themselves with the backpacks: "Tier Upgrades" quest says the metal tiers work just like on Sophisticated Backpacks, and "Void Upgrades" quest says the Void Upgrade matches the backpack one.[2]
Chipped workbenches
There are seven Chipped upgrades, each tied to one Chipped workbench. All seven recipes are marked as changed by the pack, so check the rendered recipe rather than relying on the mod's defaults. Each one also uses Upgrade Base, which the "Upgrade Base" quest quest says you need to craft any of the upgrades.[2][4]
- Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade goes with the Alchemy Bench.[4]
- Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade goes with the Botanist Workbench.[4]
- Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade goes with the Carpenters Table.[4]
- Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade goes with the Glassblower.[4]

Vanilla chest boats and minecarts
Vanilla chest boats and the chest minecart can be turned into Sophisticated storage versions. There are conversion recipes for the oak, birch, acacia, cherry, dark oak, jungle and mangrove chest boats, the bamboo chest raft, and the chest minecart. These are the mod's own recipes. The same idea shows up in the quest book: "Sophisticated Storage" quest says you can craft a Sophisticated Chest or Barrel by combining the vanilla item with a redstone torch.[2][4]

The pack has 70 shaped and 14 shapeless recipes of this kind, and every one that is written out in the sources is marked as changed by the pack. The shaped ones use 4 different ingredients and the shapeless ones use 1. Below is an example of each.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Sophisticated Storage?
3 parts
All of the quests for this mod are in the quest book's General Storage chapter. It sits in the Resources & Logistics group and is chapter 7 of 31. The chapter has 146 quests in total and also covers other storage mods, so I'll stick to the Sophisticated Storage ones. 13 quests in the chapter aren't covered here, so check the quest book for those.[2]
The starting quest
Everything begins with "Sophisticated Storage" quest. It asks for the Basic Tier Upgrade and explains how to make Sophisticated Chests and Barrels. If you've already placed your storage in the world, you can use that upgrade on it to convert it. The quest also says these containers can hold more items, hold fluids, or automate jobs like smelting ores.[2]
Quests that come right after it
Five quests list Sophisticated Storage as the one before them:[2]
- "Tier Upgrades" quest asks for one of the Basic to Iron, Gold, Diamond or Netherite upgrades (Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade, Basic to Gold Tier Upgrade, Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade, Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade). The quest notes you can jump to the higher tiers straight from basic.[2]
- "Limited Barrels" quest asks for any Limited Barrel, from Limited Barrel 1 to Limited Barrel 4. The quest says they work like Functional Storage drawers and hold up to 4 item types, with I holding one type and IV holding 4.[2]
- "Moving Chests" quest asks for Packing Tape. Use the tape on a Sophisticated chest, then break it to get the chest as a single item. The tape disappears once you place it down. The quest also has a note about chests with Stack Upgrades needing to be packed up first before moving.[2]
- "Creating Storage Networks" quest asks for the Storage Tool, the Storage Controller and the Storage Link. Storage placed next to the Controller links to it automatically, and you can dump items into the network by right-clicking the Controller. Storage Links connect containers that are away from your main hub, and the Storage Tool links them up to the Controller.[2]
- "Upgrade Base" quest asks for the Upgrade Base, which the quest says you need to craft any of the upgrades.[2]
The upgrade quests
Five more quests list a quest called Upgrade Base as the one before them. The quest book has several quests with that name (the backpack and Refined Storage chains have their own), so the storage one is the Upgrade Base quest above. Each asks for one item from a small set:[2]
- "Stack Upgrades" quest takes any Stack Upgrade, from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 and Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus up to Stack Upgrade Tier 5. It raises the stack limit of each slot in the chest, and the quest says these are much cheaper than the backpack versions.[2]
- "Void Upgrades" quest takes the Void Upgrade or the Advanced Void Upgrade. It voids specific items going into the chest and has a filter, which the quest says can even void everything from a certain mod.[2]
- "Useful Upgrades" quest takes the Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Smelting Upgrade. The example it gives is crafting inside the chest with the Crafting Upgrade.[2]
- "Hopper Upgrades" quest takes the Hopper Upgrade or Advanced Hopper Upgrade. It lets the chest act like a hopper, pulling items in from the top or pushing them out from the bottom.[2]
- "Pickup Upgrades" quest takes the Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade or Advanced Magnet Upgrade. The quest says the Pickup Upgrade is the base level, and the Magnet Upgrade gives more options and a wider range.[2]
Which Sophisticated Storage config options matter?
5 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
Sophisticated Storage has a client, a common and a server config. The big one is the server file. In this pack, every server option shown with a mod default is set to exactly that default, so the numbers below are the mod's normal balance, not a pack tweak.[8]
Storage size and upgrade slots
Each tier has its own inventory slot count and upgrade slot count. The barrel options are listed here, and the chest and shulker box options for each metal tier carry the same values.[8]
- Wood barrel: 27 slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.WoodBarrel.inventorySlotCount, server.WoodBarrel.upgradeSlotCount).[8]
- Plain shulker box: 27 slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.ShulkerBox.inventorySlotCount, server.ShulkerBox.upgradeSlotCount).[8]
- Copper: 45 slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.CopperBarrel.inventorySlotCount, server.CopperBarrel.upgradeSlotCount).[8]
- Iron: 54 slots and 2 upgrade slots (server.IronBarrel.inventorySlotCount, server.IronBarrel.upgradeSlotCount).[8]
- Gold: 81 slots and 3 upgrade slots (server.GoldBarrel.inventorySlotCount, server.GoldBarrel.upgradeSlotCount).[8]
- Diamond: 108 slots and 4 upgrade slots (server.DiamondBarrel.inventorySlotCount, server.DiamondBarrel.upgradeSlotCount).[8]
- Netherite: 132 slots and 5 upgrade slots (server.NetheriteBarrel.inventorySlotCount, server.NetheriteBarrel.upgradeSlotCount).[8]
Limited barrels use a base slot limit multiplier instead of a slot count. Here are a few examples:[8]
- Limited barrel tier I has a multiplier of 32 (server.LimitedBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier).[8]
- Limited barrel tier IV has a multiplier of 8 (server.LimitedBarrelIV.baseSlotLimitMultiplier).[8]
- Netherite limited barrel tier I has a multiplier of 160 and 5 upgrade slots (server.LimitedNetheriteBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier, server.LimitedNetheriteBarrelI.upgradeSlotCount).[8]
Dyeing limited barrel counts is enabled in this pack (server.limitedBarrelCountDyeingEnabled).[8]
Upgrade limits
server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many of certain upgrades one storage can hold. Barrels, chests and shulker boxes allow 1 furnace upgrade, 2 stack upgrades and 1 jukebox upgrade. Limited barrels allow 1 furnace upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade.[8]
Stack upgrades will not stack bundles or any colour of shulker box, even with the upgrade installed (server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems).[8]
Breaking storage
common.dropPacked is false in this pack. Chests and barrels are not automatically dropped as packed with their contents when you break them, so use packing tape if you want to move a full one.[9]
There is also a safety net. If breaking would spill more than 200 item entities, the break is canceled unless you hold shift, and a message reminds you about packing tape (server.tooManyItemEntityDrops).[8]
Upgrade tuning
- Magnet range is 3 blocks for the basic magnet and 5 for the advanced one (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange, server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[8]
- The basic hopper upgrade moves up to 1 item per transfer, once every 8 ticks (server.hopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize, server.hopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks).[8]
- The advanced hopper upgrade moves up to 4 per transfer, once every 2 ticks (server.advancedHopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize, server.advancedHopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks).[8]
- The smelting upgrade has speed and fuel efficiency multipliers of 1, which matches a vanilla furnace (server.smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier, server.smeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier).[8]
- Void upgrades can always void, not just overflow (server.voidUpgrade.voidAlwaysEnabled).[8]
- The storage controller connects blocks within 15 blocks (server.controllerRange).[8]
Client display options
Both client options are false, so JEI and the creative tab show every wood variant. Turn on client.showSingleWoodVariantOnly or client.showHigherTierGenericWoodVariants if the lists feel too long.[10]
