What is Productive Trees?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide
Productive Trees is all about breeding trees. This pack ships version 26.1.2-1.2.1, and the mod adds 159 trees. You can look up every tree, and which ones breed together, in JEI.[1][2]
It's a good fit if you like bees and tinkering with genetics-style breeding. The basic idea is to put one tree next to another near some bees and let them do the work.[3]
How you get new trees
- With bees: the leaves of both trees must be within 4 blocks of the bee nest or hive, and the bees need flowers nearby. Each trip from the flower to the hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf. A spyglass helps you spot which leaves got pollinated.[3]
- By hand: collect leaves and run them through a pollen sifter to extract pollen. Use the pollen on a leaf to pollinate it and get a new tree species. Check JEI to see which pollen goes on which leaves.[3][4][5]
If you use Productive Bees, the Pollen Sieve Upgrade goes into an advanced beehive so the bees collect pollen from nearby trees for you. Range upgrades widen the collection area, and extra sieve upgrades won't increase the yield. For the hive's working area, the base range is 4 and each range upgrade adds 2 blocks.[3][6]
Extras
Trees also give you some side products. Maple sap can be extracted from Sugar Maple trees and turned into Maple Syrup. The stripper takes the bark off wood and needs an axe to operate.[7][8]
The mod has compatibility with Tree Tap for extra tree products. However, the in-game guide entry for it says Tree Tap isn't installed, so don't count on those extras.[9][10]
Unverified The sources don't show where Productive Trees fits in the pack's progression. It is not on the ATM Star quest path, and no quests in this pack involve it, so treat it as an optional side system.
How do you get started with Productive Trees?
3 parts
Productive Trees is all about breeding new tree species by cross-pollinating leaves. The mod is still in beta and not feature complete, and the growth visuals for the trees are still under development, so don't be surprised if a grown tree looks a bit unfinished.[3]
Your first steps, in order
- Open JEI first. The mod has 159 trees, and JEI is where you look up which trees breed together and any other recipe for the mod. You need this to know which two trees to pair up.[2][5]
- Plant one tree next to another tree, close to some bees. That's the basic loop: two trees, bees, profit.[3]
- Check your spacing. The leaves of both trees have to be within 4 blocks of the bee nest or hive, and the bees need flowers nearby. Each trip from a flower to the hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf.[3]
- Use a spyglass to spot which leaves have been pollinated.[3]
- If you want more control, go manual. Collect leaves and run them through a pollen sifter to get pollen, then use the pollen on a leaf to pollinate it and get a new tree species. Check JEI for which pollen goes on which leaves.[3][4][5]
Unverified The crafting recipe for the pollen sifter isn't in the sources available for this section. Look it up in JEI in your game rather than trusting a guess. This site does hold All the Mods 11's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Automating with bees
Once the basic setup works, you can let the bees do the sifting. Install a pollen sieve upgrade in an advanced beehive from Productive Bees and the bees will collect pollen from nearby trees. Some of the pollen they collect gets sifted and deposited in the hive. A second sieve upgrade will not increase the yield, so one is enough.[6][11]
Range upgrades widen the area the hive works on. The base range is 4, and each range upgrade adds 2 blocks. The sieve's collection area is affected by range upgrades too.[3][6]
Finding rare saplings
Some saplings can't be bred early on and have to be found as loot. Black Ember saplings hide in Nether bastion treasure chests, and Blue Yonder saplings turn up in the treasure chests of sunken galleons. Flickering Sun saplings can show up in desert temple treasure rooms.[11]
How does Productive Trees work?
6 parts
Productive Trees is built around one idea: you breed trees by pollinating their leaves. There is no big power or fluid network to learn here. The sources describe two ways to pollinate (bees or by hand), a few small machines, and upgrades for them.[2][3][5]
Breeding with bees
The basic recipe is to put one tree next to another tree near some bees. The leaves of both trees must be within 4 blocks of the beenest or hive, and the bees need flowers nearby. Every trip from a flower back to the hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf.[3]
A spyglass helps you see which leaves have been pollinated.[3]
The hive's base range is 4. Each range upgrade adds 2 blocks to the working area, and the hive can be simulated.[3]
Pollen and manual pollination
If you would rather not use bees, collect leaves and run them through a pollen sifter, which extracts pollen from leaves. Use the resulting pollen on a leaf to pollinate it by hand and get a new tree species.[3][4][11]
Bees can also collect pollen, and that pollen works for manual pollination too. Check JEI to see which trees breed together, so you know which pollen to use on which leaves. The mod has 159 trees, and JEI is the place to look up the breeding pairs.[2][5]
Pollen Sieve Upgrade
This upgrade goes in an advanced beehive from Productive Bees. With it installed, some of the pollen the bees collect is sifted and deposited in the hive. The collection area is affected by range upgrades.[6][11]
Machine upgrades
The pollen sifter, the sawmill and the stripper each take time upgrades. Install them in the machine for faster processing, and multiple upgrades give a greater time decrease. Each machine also has a second upgrade tier, described as twice as good as the other one.[11]
The stripper is the exception. For the stripper, each upgrade increases the number of items processed per operation by 4.[11]
Stripper
The stripper takes the bark off wood, leaving it stripped. It requires an axe to operate.[7]
Tree Tap compatibility
The mod is compatible with the Tree Tap mod, which lets you extract some additional tree products. Maple sap can be extracted from Sugar Maple trees and makes Maple Syrup. The in-game guide also notes that Date Palm has juicy trunks you can take advantage of.[8][9][12]
The in-game guide page for Tree Tap reports that Tree Tap is not installed, so you can't rely on these products in this pack.[10]
Unverified The sources don't say whether the machines use power, fluids or automation (hoppers, pipes and so on). They also give no multiblock structures, processing times or machine recipes, and the pack has no config files for this mod. Look these up in JEI or in game. This site does hold All the Mods 11's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
How do you progress through Productive Trees?
4 parts
Here's the honest picture: no quests in this pack involve Productive Trees, and I found no tier system for the mod in the sources. There's no quest line to follow, so progression is about what you unlock yourself: more tree species, and the tools to get them.[2]
The mod has 159 trees. Instead of listing them, the mod's own guide sends you to JEI to see which trees breed together and what every other recipe is. Keep JEI open as you go.[2]
Breed your first new tree
The basic loop is simple: put one tree next to another tree near some bees. The mod is in beta and not feature complete, and the growth features for the trees (how they look when grown) are still under development.[3]
- Plant the two trees you want to cross so their leaves are within 4 blocks of the bee nest or hive.[3]
- Make sure the bees have flowers nearby. Each trip from the flower to the hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf.[3]
- Use a spyglass to spot which leaves have been pollinated.[3]
Take control of pollen
You don't have to leave it all to the bees. Collect leaves and run them through a pollen sifter to extract pollen, then use the pollen balls on a leaf to pollinate it and get a new tree species.[3][4]
Pollen from bees and pollen from sifters can both be used on leaves by hand. JEI shows which trees to breed together, so you know which pollen goes on which leaves.[5]
Scale up with beehive upgrades
Range upgrades increase the hive's working area by 2 blocks per upgrade, on top of a base range of 4. This helps if you want to cover more trees from one hive.[3]
The Pollen Sieve Upgrade goes into an advanced beehive from Productive Bees and makes the bees collect pollen from nearby trees. Range upgrades affect its collection area. More than one sieve upgrade won't increase the yield, so one is enough.[6]
Extra tree products
- Stripping: the stripper takes the bark off wood, leaving it stripped, and needs an axe to operate.[7]
- Maple Syrup: maple sap can be extracted from Sugar Maple trees, and the sap makes Maple Syrup.[8]
- Tree Tap compatibility: the mod works with the Tree Tap mod, which opens up some additional tree products to extract.[9]
How does Productive Trees work with other mods?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide
The clearest link between Productive Trees and the rest of the pack is the Sawmill. The pack adds Sawmill recipes that turn Sawdust into planks from many other mods.[13]
Every one of these recipes is marked as added by the pack. Each takes sawdust as its only input and gives you planks.[13]
Sawmill (productivetrees)
Recipe id: allthemods:productivetrees/sawing/regions_unexplored/maple_planks
Sawmill recipe added by the pack for Maple Planks. The other planks below follow the same pattern.
Planks you can make from sawdust
- Aether II: Skyroot Planks, Greatroot Planks and Wisproot Planks.[13]
- Allthemodium: Ancient Planks, Demonic Planks and Soul Planks. Each has several recipe variants in the pack, all using sawdust.[13]
- EvilCraft: Undead Planks.[13]
- Forbidden Arcanus: Aurum Planks, Edelwood Planks and Fungyss Planks.[13]
- Ice and Fire: Dreadwood Planks.[13]
- Integrated Dynamics: Menril Planks.[13]
- Occultism: Otherplanks.[13]
- Silent Gear: Netherwood Planks.[13]
- Undergarden: Ancient Root Planks, Grongle Planks, Smogstem Planks and Wigglewood Planks.[13]
Regions Unexplored
Regions Unexplored has the biggest list. Sawdust can become Alpha Planks, Baobab Planks, Blackwood Planks, Brimwood Planks, Cobalt Planks, Cypress Planks, Dead Planks, Eucalyptus Planks, Joshua Planks, Kapok Planks, Larch Planks, Magnolia Planks, Maple Planks, Palm Planks, Pine Planks, Redwood Planks, Socotra Planks, Willow Planks and Wisteria Planks.[13]
The bioshroom planks are covered too: Blue Bioshroom Planks, Green Bioshroom Planks, Pink Bioshroom Planks and Yellow Bioshroom Planks.[13]
Other mod compatibility
The mod's own in-game guide says it has compatibility with the Tree Tap mod, which opens up some additional tree products to be extracted.[9]
The Pollen Sieve Upgrade is installed in an advanced beehive from Productive Bees, so the bees collect pollen from nearby trees. The collection area is affected by range upgrades, and more than one sieve upgrade will not increase the yield.[6]
