What is Just Another Witchery Remake?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 guide

Just Another Witchery Remake is a ground-up remake of the old Witchery mod. It aims to bring over everything from the original with fresh textures and content. The authors call it a 1:0.9 remake rather than a 1:1 copy, so most things will feel familiar.[1]

This pack ships version 0.5.13.1 for Minecraft 26.1.2.[2]

What to expect

The mod started as a Modfest 2024 / SpookyJam 2024 project. It was built to be datapack-friendly, with data-driven rituals and recipes, command execution support and modpack-centric design choices. Since the 0.5 update, rituals can handle multiple events in parallel or in sequence.[1]

Soul magic and lichdom are no longer part of the base mod. They moved to the Forbidden Magic addon.[1]

Watch out: The project page itself says the mod has little content for the average player and is prone to bugs, because it was made in about a month. Expect rough edges.[1]

The in-game guidebook

The mod includes its own guidebook, organised into general, brewing and brazier groups, plus entries for lycanthropy and the spirit world.[3][4][5][6][7]

  • General: entries for the altar, the cauldron, the distillery and the coven contract.[8][9][10][11]
  • Brewing: entries for the cauldron, brews, infusions, the crystal ball and flying ointment.[6][12][13][14][15]
  • Brazier: entries for the brazier, the censer and several summoning rituals, such as banshee and poltergeist.[5][16][17][18]

How do you get started with Just Another Witchery Remake?

5 parts

Welcome to Just Another Witchery Remake! It is a remake of the old Witchery mod, built to be datapack-friendly, so its recipes and rituals are data driven. The recipe chain below is a good way in, and each step feeds the next.[1]

Step one: make a Jar

Start with the Jar. Every oven recipe for this mod in the pack takes a Jar as its only ingredient, so it is the base of the early game.[19]

JarMod recipe

Smelting

    Recipe id: witchery:jar

This one is a smelting recipe, so you cook it rather than craft it on a grid.

Step two: cook Jars in the oven

Oven recipes turn a Jar into Breath of the Goddess, Exhale of the Horned One or Foul Fume. Each one also gives you Wood Ash. The Exhale of the Horned One is the one you want first, because the next step uses it.[19]

    Wood AshMod recipe

    Oven (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:oven_cooking/exhale_of_the_horned_one

A Jar in the oven gives Exhale of the Horned One and Wood Ash.

    Step three: brew up Mutandis

Mutandis is a cauldron crafting recipe that uses the Exhale you just cooked. One craft gives you 4 of them.[19]

    4× MutandisMod recipe

    Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/mutandis

Cauldron crafting, 4 Mutandis per craft.

Then upgrade it. Mutandis Extremis is another cauldron recipe built on Mutandis. It is worth making early, since both Drop of Luck and Brew of Last Stand use it.[19]

    Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/mutandis_extremis

Step four: move on to chalk

Ritual Chalk is the base for the other chalks in the cauldron recipes: Golden Ritual Chalk, Infernal Chalk and Binding Chalk. The Binding Chalk recipe also returns its Eternal Catalyst.[19]

    Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/golden_chalk

    Infernal ChalkMod recipe

    Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/infernal_chalk

    Wood for building

The mod's own Alder Planks recipe makes 4 planks. This pack also adds sawmill recipes from Productive Trees that turn Sawdust into 6 planks each of Alder, Hawthorn and Rowan.[19]

6× Alder PlanksAdded by the pack

    Sawmill (productivetrees)

    Recipe id: allthemods:productivetrees/sawing/witchery/alder_planks

Added by the pack: 6 Alder Planks per craft.

Tip: The mod has its own in-game guidebook, and its general chapter includes a beginning entry. Read it alongside this page as you go.[20][21]

How does Just Another Witchery Remake work?

    5 parts

The machines in Just Another Witchery Remake are not power-hungry multiblock reactors. They are witchy workstations: a cauldron, an oven, a distillery, a brazier and a censer. The sources I have cover these stations in uneven detail, so here is what they actually show.[19][22]

    Brazier and censer

The Brazier is a Witch's tool for burning ingredients. You light it with flint and steel, or with a fire charge.[22]

The Censer takes potions instead. Right-click it with any potion and it burns that potion as incense, applying the effect to everything nearby. Effects apply continuously within a 16-block radius for as long as the potion lasts.[22]

Some ingredients burn eternally when they are blessed by altar power. A Censer that is working gives off soul fire particles, and the coloured wisps show what kind of potion is burning.[22]

Tip: Altar power is the resource the mod's burning effects draw on. The Anguish of the Dead incense, which gives nearby mobs Strength while the Brazier burns, needs 200 altar power to begin.[22]

    Cauldron

The Cauldron handles two recipe types in this pack. Cauldron brewing has 22 recipes, and cauldron crafting has 9. The recipes below are shown exactly as the pack has them.[19]

    Brew of FrostMod recipe

    Cauldron Brewing (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_brewing/brew_of_frost

A cauldron brewing recipe for Brew of Frost, shown exactly as it is in this pack.

    Brew of ErosionMod recipe

    Cauldron Brewing (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_brewing/brew_of_erosion

The cauldron brewing recipe for Brew of Erosion.

    Cauldron Brewing (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_brewing/brew_of_flowing_spirit

The cauldron brewing recipe for Brew of Flowing Spirit.

    Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/binding_chalk

This cauldron crafting recipe for Binding Chalk returns the Eternal Catalyst along with the chalk.

    Drop of LuckMod recipe

    Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/drop_of_luck

Another cauldron crafting recipe, this one for Drop of Luck.

The Cauldron comes as a plain Copper Cauldron. It also has Exposed, Weathered and Oxidized versions, plus waxed versions of each. The sources list these blocks by name but do not say whether the stage changes how the Cauldron works.[22]

    Witches Oven

The Witches Oven comes in an Iron version and a Copper version, and the Copper one has the same weathering and waxed stages as the Cauldron. Each oven has a matching Fume Extension block. Oven cooking is its own recipe type, with 12 recipes in this pack. Every one of them takes a Jar as its ingredient, and together they make 9 different results.[19][22]

    Wood AshMod recipe

    Oven (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:oven_cooking/breath_of_the_goddess

Cooking a Jar gives you Breath of the Goddess and a Wood Ash. A second recipe, witchery:oven_cooking/breath_of_the_goddess2, has the same inputs and outputs.

    Distillery

The Distillery has its own recipe type, and its recipes can give several outputs at once. The recipe data here lists no item inputs for these recipes, so check the recipe viewer in game for what you feed the machine.[19]

    Distilling (witchery)

      Recipe id: witchery:distilling/ender_dew

A distilling recipe that gives Ender Dew and Whiff of Magic.

      Distilling (witchery)

        Recipe id: witchery:distilling/brew_of_hollow_tears

A distilling recipe that gives Brew of Hollow Tears together with Condensed Fear and Focused Will.

        Distilling (witchery)

          Recipe id: witchery:distilling/oil_of_vitriol_gypsum

A distilling recipe that gives Oil of Vitriol and Gypsum among its outputs.

          Rituals and datapacks

The mod's own page says it is built to be datapack-friendly, with data-driven rituals and recipes and modpack-centric design choices. The recipe viewer shows the values this pack uses.[1]

How do you progress through Just Another Witchery Remake?

          5 parts

There is no quest path to follow for this mod, so the progression below comes from the recipes themselves. I've grouped them into stages by what feeds into what. The grouping is my own reading of the recipes, not an official in-game ranking.[19]

Stage 1: wood and the jar

The pack adds sawmill recipes from Productive Trees for each of the mod's woods: Alder Planks, Hawthorn Planks and Rowan Planks. These are pack additions, so you can get planks without the mod's own crafting.[19]

6× Alder PlanksAdded by the pack

          Sawmill (productivetrees)

          Recipe id: allthemods:productivetrees/sawing/witchery/alder_planks

The pack's sawmill recipe for Alder Planks. Hawthorn and Rowan work the same way.

The Jar is the real starting point for the magic side. It is made by smelting, and almost everything in the next stage starts from one.[19]

          JarMod recipe

          Smelting

            Recipe id: witchery:jar

            Stage 2: the oven

The oven has 12 recipes that make 9 different results, and every one starts from a jar. They give you the fumes the later stages lean on, plus Wood Ash as a by-product.[19]

            Wood AshMod recipe

            Oven (witchery)

            Recipe id: witchery:oven_cooking/odor_of_purity

Odor of Purity turns up in several brews later on.

            Stage 3: distilling

Distilling is where the next set of building blocks comes from: Demons Blood, Refined Evil, Ender Dew, Whiff of Magic, Tear of the Goddess, Oil of Vitriol, Gypsum and Reek of Misfortune. Brew of Hollow Tears also has a distilling recipe. The recipe data I have lists the outputs of these recipes but no item inputs.[19]

            Distilling (witchery)

              Recipe id: witchery:distilling/refined_evil

              Stage 4: cauldron crafting

Here the mod becomes a real chain: Mutandis first, then Mutandis Extremis, and then the Mutating Sprig. The three recipes are shown below.[19]

              4× MutandisMod recipe

              Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

              Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/mutandis

              Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

              Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/mutandis_extremis

              Mutating SprigMod recipe

              Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

              Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/mutating_sprig

The cauldron also makes the chalk line: Golden Ritual Chalk, Infernal Chalk, Otherwhere Chalk and Binding Chalk. Binding Chalk is the top of that line, and the Eternal Catalyst appears in its recipe below. Other cauldron crafts are the Pentacle and the Drop of Luck.[19]

              Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

              Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/binding_chalk

The catalyst is also an output, so it is not used up.

              Stage 5: cauldron brewing

The cauldron has 22 brewing recipes. The ones I can see are Brew of Love, Brew of Sleeping, Brew of Frost, Brew of Ink, Brew of Erosion, Brew of Raising, Brew of Revealing, Brew of the Depths, Brew of Flowing Spirit, Brew of Oblivion and Brew of Last Stand. Many of them use the oven and distillery products from the earlier stages.[19]

              Cauldron Brewing (witchery)

              Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_brewing/brew_of_sleeping

Brew of Sleeping builds on Brew of Love, so make Love first.

              Cauldron Brewing (witchery)

              Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_brewing/brew_of_last_stand

Last Stand needs Mutandis Extremis, so it sits after Stage 4.

Tip: The mod's recipes here show no pack changes. Only the three sawmill plank recipes are marked as added by the pack, and the rest are the mod's own recipes.[19]

How does Just Another Witchery Remake work with other mods?

              3 parts

Just Another Witchery Remake links up with Productive Trees, Thaumaturge and Neo Vitae through recipes in this pack. The Productive Trees link is added by the pack itself. The Thaumaturge and Neo Vitae links come from Witchery's own ritual recipes, which call for items from those mods.[19]

Productive Trees: sawdust into Witchery planks

The pack adds Productive Trees sawmill recipes that turn Sawdust into Witchery planks. There is a recipe for each of Alder Planks, Hawthorn Planks and Rowan Planks.[19]

6× Alder PlanksAdded by the pack

              Sawmill (productivetrees)

              Recipe id: allthemods:productivetrees/sawing/witchery/alder_planks

Alder planks from the sawmill, a recipe added by the pack.

6× Hawthorn PlanksAdded by the pack

              Sawmill (productivetrees)

              Recipe id: allthemods:productivetrees/sawing/witchery/hawthorn_planks

Hawthorn planks work the same way.

6× Rowan PlanksAdded by the pack

              Sawmill (productivetrees)

              Recipe id: allthemods:productivetrees/sawing/witchery/rowan_planks

              So do rowan planks.

Thaumaturge: Amber and Quicksilver in rituals

Witchery has a pair of ritual recipes that each use a Thaumaturge material: Amber in one and Quicksilver in the other. Apart from that swap, they share the same other ingredients. Both are ordinary mod recipes, not changes made by the pack.[19]

              Mod recipe

              Ritual (witchery)

              Recipe id: witchery:ritual/blocks_below_amber

The Amber version of the ritual.

              Mod recipe

              Ritual (witchery)

              Recipe id: witchery:ritual/blocks_below_cinnabar

The Quicksilver version of the ritual.

Neo Vitae: blood items in the Rite of Bloodbinding

The Rite of Bloodbinding ritual needs Blood Pearl and Weak Blood Shard from Neo Vitae, so you will need that mod's items to perform it. It is also an ordinary mod recipe, not a pack change.[19]

              Mod recipe

              Ritual (witchery)

              Recipe id: witchery:ritual/rite_of_bloodbinding

The ritual recipe that uses Neo Vitae items.

What changed in Just Another Witchery Remake between versions?

              2 parts

All the Mods 11 0.12.0-beta ships Just Another Witchery Remake version 0.5.17+mc26.1.2. That is the version these notes cover, taken from the mod's own changelog.[23]

              Changes in 0.5.17

              • Vampire armor now grants extra sun resistance instead of fire protection.[24]
              • Curse removal becomes easier after each attempt.[24]
              • There is now a simple handler for players who are both Lich and Vampire (listed under Forbidden magic).[24]
              • Phylacteries no longer need skylight in dimensions without a sky, which the changelog gives as level 9+ (listed under Forbidden magic).[24]

              Fixes in 0.5.17

              • Cages no longer drop extra when an area mining tool is used.[24]
              • Curse removal now takes witch level into account. Before, it ignored it.[24]

The sources here only include the changelog for this one mod version, so changes from earlier releases are not covered.[23][24]
