What is Productive Bees?

3 parts

Productive Bees builds on vanilla bees and turns them into a full resource-production system. Alongside the vanilla bee, you'll find a range of new bees living in well-hidden nests in different biomes. By breeding them, you can work your way up to bees that produce resource combs in advanced hives.[1][2]

This pack includes Productive Bees version 26.1.2-15.1.0.[3]

The kinds of bees you'll meet

  • Solitary bees spawn from solitary nests in the overworld. They won't live in a hive, but their genetics let you breed new types of bees.[1][4]
  • Wild bees also live in nests, mostly in the Nether and the End, but unlike solitary bees they will happily move into a hive.[5]
  • Hive bees live in hives and produce honey and resources, and they need advanced hives to make resource combs. Most are bred from other bees, while some come from feeding an item to a bee or from crafted spawn eggs. For example, the Diamond Bee is bred from an Ender Bee and a Lapis Bee.[2][6]
  • Professional bees have special jobs. The Farmer Bee harvests nearby crops, the Collector Bee picks up items from the ground, and the Lumber and Quarry Bees gather wood and stone chips.[7][8][9][10][11]

Machines and genetics

Once your bees are producing, the Centrifuge processes resource combs into resources and honey. The Honey Generator burns that honey to produce power. The Breeding Chamber lets you breed bees in a safe environment using power and empty cages.[12][13][14]

If you like tinkering, bees also have attributes such as productivity, weather tolerance, day or night activity, endurance and temper. You can move these between bees by putting an isolated gene on a honey treat and feeding it to a bee.[15][16]

Getting started

  1. Find a vanilla bee nest to collect honey bottles and honeycombs. You need the honey bottles to craft Bee Cages, which make it much easier to bring bees home.[1]
  2. Once you have enough honeycombs, build an advanced beehive and an expansion box so you can look inside and see what your bees produce.[1]
  3. Use JEI to look up breeding recipes, because some bees can only be found in other dimensions or obtained through breeding.[1]
Tip: Unlike the vanilla hive, the advanced hive doesn't need a campfire nearby to be harvested. You can also break it and move it with the bees still inside, no silk touch required.[17]

How do you get started with Productive Bees?

6 parts

Productive Bees builds on vanilla bees, so it helps to know how vanilla beekeeping works. Besides the familiar honey bee, you'll find new bees hiding in nests in different biomes, and their genetics let you breed all sorts of new bee types.[1]

Step 1: Raid a vanilla bee nest

Your first job is to find a vanilla bee nest and collect honey bottles and honeycombs. These are the starting resources for everything else in this section, so grab plenty of both before you head home.[1]

Step 2: Craft some Bee Cages

The Bee Cage is your early-game bee transport, and you can get it early. Right-click a bee with a cage to catch it, then right-click the filled cage on the ground to release it. If you release a bee on a valid flower block, that block becomes its flower position. If you sneak while releasing it on a valid hive or nest, that becomes its home.[1][18]

Tip: Always keep a few spare cages on you when you're out exploring. You never know when you'll run into an interesting bee.[18]

Step 3: Build an advanced beehive

Once you have enough honeycombs, build an advanced beehive. This is where your bees actually become productive, because hive bees only make resource combs when they live in advanced hives. The hive has a GUI that shows which bees are inside and lets you take out what they've produced. Unlike a vanilla hive, it doesn't need a campfire nearby to be harvested, and you can break it and move it with the bees still inside, without silk touch.[1][2][17]

There are many wood variants of the advanced beehive, so pick whichever wood you have lying around. Here is the birch version as an example.[17][19]

Other wood variants also exist.

Step 4: Add an expansion box

Next, craft an expansion box and attach it to your hive. It raises the hive's bee capacity from 3 to 5 and lets you install upgrades. You can place it on top of the hive or next to it, but each hive can only have one expansion box.[1][17][20]

Step 5: Get a Centrifuge running

Bees in advanced beehives produce resource combs. To turn those combs into resources and honey, you put them in a Centrifuge. It holds 10 buckets of liquid, which you can pump out, and it automatically pushes fluid into any fluid storage block placed next to it.[13][21]

Step 6: Go bee hunting

  • Solitary nests are scattered around the world, and each one is home to 1 solitary bee. You can break a nest to pick it up with the bee still inside, no silk touch needed.[22]
  • Solitary bees won't live in a hive, but they matter for breeding, because most hive bees are bred from solitary bees and other hive bees.[1][2]
  • Some bees are only found in other dimensions or can only be obtained through breeding. Use JEI to look up breeding recipes and flower requirements so you know which bees to track down.[1][2]
Tip: To keep things running smoothly, give every bee a home and its required flower block, and don't make their enclosure too big. Otherwise the bees start wandering off.[23]

How does Productive Bees work?

6 parts

Productive Bees builds on the vanilla bee system, so the basic loop will feel familiar. Bees live in hives, fly out to their flowers and come back with produce. The big change is that bees living in advanced hives make resource combs, and you process those combs in a Centrifuge to get resources and honey. Everything else in the mod supports that loop: machines for catching and breeding bees, upgrades for tuning hives, and ways to move honey and power around.[1][13][21]

Advanced hives and expansion boxes

Hive bees need an advanced hive to produce resource combs. Unlike a vanilla hive, an advanced hive doesn't need a campfire nearby to be harvestable. You can also break it and move it with the bees still inside, no silk touch required. Its GUI shows which bees are inside and lets you take out whatever they've produced.[2][17]

Attaching an expansion box raises the hive's bee capacity from 3 to 5 and unlocks upgrade slots. You can place the box on top of the hive or next to it, but each hive can only have one expansion box. There are many wood variants, including canvas versions.[17][19][20]

Other wood types follow the same pattern.

The hive handles bees as items too. Put empty bee cages into it to pull bees out, or filled cages to insert them. If a bee is taking too long, you can whack the hive or nest with a stick to force it out. It loses all its production progress, and this only works when it's safe for the bee to exit.[17][24]

The Bee Cage also lets you point a bee at the right spots. Release a caged bee on a valid flower block and that block becomes its flower position. Release it on a valid hive or nest while sneaking and that becomes its home.[18][24]

Draconic bees get their own Dragon Egg Hive, which lets you harvest draconic combs. In the End, bees in this hive need no flowers because they absorb draconic essence from the air. Anywhere else, they need another pollination source. Dragon Egg Hives don't support upgrades, and Draconic bees in a normal advanced hive won't produce dragon breath.[25]

Hive and machine upgrades

Upgrades go into hives (through the expansion box) and into several machines. The same upgrade often does something different depending on where you install it.[17][26]

  • Productivity upgrade: in a hive it increases how many combs a bee produces per trip, and you can install several. In a centrifuge the basic version increases the stack processing rate by 4, and the higher tiers by 8 and 16. The top tier also works as a simulator upgrade in a hive. In a Honey Generator it lowers honey consumption.[24][26]
  • Speed upgrade: in a hive it cuts the time a bee spends inside. In a centrifuge or incubator it increases operation speed.[26]
  • BaBee upgrade: in a hive it gives a chance for a baby bee to spawn each time honey is delivered, based on the bees present. It doesn't work with bees that can't self-breed or that need special breeding items, and more upgrades give a greater chance. In a catcher, only baby bees are caught.[24][26]
  • Filter upgrade: right click a bee to add it to the filter, and put the filter in a crafting grid to clear it. It limits which bees can enter a hive, which bees a catcher picks up, and which bees' combs a centrifuge accepts.[24][26]
  • Range upgrade: in a hive it increases the working range of Farmer and Collector/Hoarder bees by 1 per upgrade, from a default of 4. In a catcher it expands the area by 1 block in all directions. You can stack several.[26]
  • Anti-teleport upgrade: stops bees living in the hive from teleporting.[24][26]
  • Gene sampler upgrade: extracts a small gene sample from pollinating bees on each visit. More upgrades improve the rate.[24][26]
  • Block upgrade: bees produce full comb blocks instead of honeycombs.[24][26]
  • Simulator upgrade: bees stay inside and their flower trip is simulated, which is better for server performance. Place the flower block or feeding slab at the foot of the hive, directly below the front, not blocking it.[26]
  • Adult upgrade: when installed in a catcher, only adult bees are caught.[24]

Centrifuge, honey and power

The centrifuge turns resource combs into resources and honey. It holds 10 buckets of liquid, which you can pump out. It also pushes fluid automatically into any fluid storage block placed next to it. The Powered Centrifuge runs on FE for faster processing. The centrifuge also separates bottled bee material into genes.[13]

The Incubator speeds up baby bees. Put the BaBee in a cage and insert it together with honey treats. It can also infuse an egg with a bee type gene to make a spawn egg of that bee. Only the type gene is used, and any other genes on the honey treat are lost.[29]

The Feeding Slab is a shared feeding spot that holds 3 item blocks. When Lumber or Quarry bees feed from it, they produce from a random item in the slab. Since a simulated hive has only 1 flower block position, a Feeding Slab lets up to 3 different bees work in that hive. If you honeylog the slab, it gives the bees regeneration.[30]

Genetics machinery

  1. Put empty bottles in the Bottler, place a bee in the middle of the Bottler and piston setup, then pull the lever to bottle the bee.[27][31]
  2. Throw the bottled bee into a centrifuge to separate the genes from the junk.[13][24][31]
  3. To raise purity, combine two of the same gene or put more of the same gene onto a treat. The Gene Indexer can combine genes automatically, but it needs a redstone signal.[16][32]
  4. Put the gene on a honey treat and feed it to a bee. The bee has a chance, based on the gene's purity, to gain the attribute.[15][16]

Automation with professional bees

Some bees do jobs instead of making resource combs. A Farmer bee harvests crops within 4 blocks of its home hive and leaves the produce on the ground, and Range upgrades extend that radius. If you have a mod that adds right click harvesting, the Farmer bee harvests that way instead. Pair it with a Collector or Hoarder bee, which gathers items off the ground into the hive, and you have an automated farm.[8][9][26][33]

Lumber bees nibble nearby wood and collect it in their hive. Quarry bees nibble stone, sand or gravel and collect stone chips, which you can craft back into the matching block. Rancher bees milk nearby cows, sheep or llamas to make milky combs, and they shear sheep too.[10][11][34]

Tip: Bees are entities with pathing and AI, which can get heavy on your computer. Make sure every bee has a home and its required flower, and keep enclosures small so bees don't wander off. You can also use a simulator upgrade so the bees never leave the hive. If you run lots of centrifuges, consider turning off comb rendering in the productivebees-client.toml client config.[23]

How do you progress through Productive Bees?

5 parts

Tier 1: Finding your first bees

Your bee empire starts out in the world. Solitary bees spawn from solitary nests in the overworld. Wild bees also live in nests, but unlike solitary bees they will happily move into a hive, and they live mainly in the Nether and the End.[4][5]

To track down nests, craft a Nest Locator. You will also want some Bee Cage to carry bees around.[19]

Tier 2: Advanced Hives

This is the big one. Hive bees must live in an advanced hive to produce resource combs, so this is your real entry point to the mod. Most hive bees are bred from solitary bees and other hive bees. Some are made by giving a specific item to a bee or by crafting spawn eggs, and JEI shows every bee recipe and flower requirement.[2]

Advanced hives are also just nicer to live with. They don't need a campfire nearby to be harvested, you can break and move them with the bees still inside without silk touch, and they have a GUI that shows which bees are inside and lets you take out what they produced.[17]

There is a version for each wood type, such as the Advanced Oak Beehive, Advanced Spruce Beehive and Advanced Crimson Beehive, plus canvas versions like the Advanced Canvas Beehive. Pick whichever matches your build.[17][19]

Tip: Tired of waiting for a bee to finish its job? Whack the hive or nest with a stick to force the bee out. It loses all production progress, and this only works if it's safe for the bee to exit.[17]

Tier 3: Processing combs

Resource combs are useless until you spin them. The Centrifuge turns resource combs into resources and honey. It holds 10 buckets of liquid and automatically pushes fluid into any fluid storage block placed next to it. The powered version runs on FE and processes faster.[13]

Tier 4: Breeding up the resource chain

Once your hives are running, it's time to climb the breeding tree. The in-game guide shows how the ore bees connect. Here are a few key steps:[6][35][36][37][38]

  1. Crystalline Bees live in nether quartz nests in the Nether. Breed one with an Ashy Mining Bee to get an Iron Bee, or with a Mason Bee to get a Gold Bee.[35][36][39]
  2. A Glowing Bee from glowing nests in the Nether, bred with a Chocolate Mining Bee, gives you a Redstone Bee.[37][40]
  3. Breed a Redstone Bee with a Blue Banded Bee to get a Lapis Bee.[38]
  4. An Ender Bee, found in end stone nests on the End islands, bred with a Lapis Bee gives you a Diamond Bee.[6][41]
  5. Breed a Slimy Bee with a Diamond Bee to get an Emerald Bee, then breed the Emerald Bee with a Lapis Bee to get an Experience Bee.[42][43]
  6. Feed a block of netherite to a Diamond Bee to convert it into an Ancient Bee.[44]

To breed in a safe, controlled setting, use the Breeding Chamber. Give it the two parent bees, their breeding items, power and empty cages for the offspring. Speed upgrades make it faster.[12]

Tier 5: Upgrades and genetics

Endgame bee setups are all about upgrades in your expansion-boxed hives. The Productivity upgrade raises combs per trip and stacks. The Speed upgrade cuts the time bees spend inside. Another upgrade makes bees produce full comb blocks instead of honeycombs. There is also one that simulates flower trips so bees never leave the hive, which is better for server performance.[26]

Tip: With the simulation upgrade, the bees' flower block or Feeding Slab must go right below the front of the hive. A simulated hive only has 1 flower block position, but a Feeding Slab holds 3 item blocks, so you can have up to 3 different bees working in that hive.[26][30]

Finally, genetics let you move attributes such as productivity and weather tolerance between bees. Put an isolated gene on a honey treat and feed it to a bee. The Incubator can also infuse an egg with a bee type gene to create a spawn egg of that bee. When you have too many gene samples, the Gene Indexer combines them automatically as long as it gets a redstone signal.[15][29][32]

How does Productive Bees work with other mods?

3 parts

Productive Bees ties into a lot of other mods in this pack. Most of the links work in two ways: items from other mods are used to create new bee types, and the resource combs those bees make go into the Centrifuge to give you another mod's materials plus Wax. The recipe browser shows the exact details for every recipe below.[2][13][19]

Bee conversions using other mods' items

Some hive bees aren't bred. You get them by giving a specific item to a bee. In this pack, several of these conversions use items from other mods, so progress in those mods opens up new bees.[2][19]

Centrifuging combs into other mods' materials

The Centrifuge turns resource combs into resources. In this pack, many of its recipes output another mod's items together with Wax. That makes bees a renewable source for a lot of materials you'd normally have to mine or craft.[13][19]
