What is Utilitarian?

Utilitarian is included in this pack as version 1.21.1-0.18.2, so you can use it in your world. It's been part of the pack for a while: it was first added in pack version 2.25 or earlier.[1]

Unverified The available sources don't confirm what this mod adds, who it's aimed at, or where it fits in the pack's progression. Check the mod's items in JEI/EMI in-game to see what it offers. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you get started with Utilitarian?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Utilitarian is a pile of small quality-of-life blocks and tools, and nearly all of its recipes here are the mod's own, so you can start with whatever helps you most. This is the order I'd make things in. It's my suggestion, not a fixed progression.[2]

Start with the Trowel

The Trowel is the simplest tool in the mod to craft, so it's a good first item. Its tooltip says shift right click changes its pull setting.[2][3]

Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal

The pack changed how you get Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal. Both are shapeless recipes registered under the actuallyadditions namespace, not Utilitarian's own. They are listed here so you know where to craft them.[2]

Redstone helpers

Once you start building contraptions, the Redstone Clock is handy. Right click it with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency, and sneak while doing so to increase it faster.[2][3]

Quiet and safe bases

The Sound Muffler mutes sounds within a set block radius. That's a nice fix for noisy machine rooms. I couldn't confirm the exact radius from the sources I have.[2][3]

Sound MufflerMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:sound_muffler

If wandering traders keep landing on top of you, craft a trader carpet. Arriving traders end up on that block instead of in your face. There is one carpet per dye color, and the white one is shown here.[2][3]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/white_soliciting_carpet

Watch out: The trapped version of each carpet, for example White Trapped Trader Carpet, is trapped and will kill the trader. Only craft it if that's what you want.[2][3]

If raiders keep coming back to an outpost, place the Raider Outpost Claim Block in it to stop them returning.[2][3]

Unverified There is no in-jar guidebook for this mod, and I found no quests for it in the pack. What the Trowel's pull setting does exactly, and the sound muffler's default radius, could not be confirmed from the available sources.

How does Utilitarian work?

8 parts

Utilitarian is a grab bag of small, focused utility blocks and items. Each one solves a single everyday problem: traders, raiders, lighting, redstone timing and more. Let's go through how each system works in this pack, so you know exactly what you're placing down.[4][5]

Controlling wandering traders

The trader carpets are the heart of the mod's no-soliciting system. Place one, and arriving traders end up on that carpet instead of in your face. That makes it perfect for a little trading porch outside your base.[4]

The carpets come in several colours, including Black Trader Carpet, Blue Trader Carpet, Brown Trader Carpet, Cyan Trader Carpet, Gray Trader Carpet, Green Trader Carpet, Light Blue Trader Carpet and Light Gray Trader Carpet. Each colour has its own recipe.[5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/black_soliciting_carpet

Other colours follow the same pattern with their matching carpet.

If you just want the trader gone, there's a trapped version of every carpet, like Black Trapped Trader Carpet. The trapped carpet kills the trader that lands on it. The mod's own tooltip calls you a monster for this, so use it with a clear conscience or not at all![4][5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/black_trapped_soliciting_carpet

You make the trapped version from the matching regular Trader Carpet.

The same no-soliciting family also includes the No Soliciting Banner and the Restraining Order. Both are craftable in this pack.[5]

Shutting down raider outposts

Lamps and lighting

The Lapis Lamp is a special light, so it's worth understanding before you rely on it. It lights up an area on the client side only. The area is still dark; you just can't see that it is. Think of it as a way to see clearly without actually changing the light level.[4]

Unverified It is not confirmed how the inverted lamps react to redstone, for example whether they light up when unpowered.

Redstone helpers

  • Redstone clock: right-click the block with an empty hand to change its pulse frequency. Sneak while doing it to increase the frequency faster.[4]
  • TPS meter: outputs a redstone signal based on the dimension's TPS, so you can wire up lag warnings or shut off farms when the server struggles.[4]

Fluid Hopper and Angel Block

The Fluid Hopper and the Angel Block are both craftable in this pack. The Angel Block has two recipe variants, so don't be surprised if a recipe viewer shows it twice.[5]

Handy tools and odd blocks

  • Sound muffler: mutes sounds within a set block radius around it, which is great for noisy machine rooms.[4]
  • Trowel: shift right-click it to change its pull setting.[4]
  • Slime bucket: the slime inside gets visibly excited to see its friends when you visit a slime chunk, so it doubles as a slime chunk finder.[4]
  • Wind charge: replenishes your breath under water.[4]
  • Drit and grrass: both hurt. Grass can grow on drit, and you should not let grrass be struck by lightning.[4]

Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal

Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal are made from regular coal and charcoal. In this pack, the recipes that make them are changed by the pack and use Actually Additions recipe ids, so check these rather than any default Utilitarian recipe.[5]

Behind-the-scenes modules

Utilitarian also runs a couple of quality-of-life modules. In this pack, the No Startup Messages module is enabled through noStartupMessagesEnabled. It stops any chat message that contains one of the word sequences listed in noStartupMessagesMessages. The pack's list targets things like alpha-build warnings from Ender IO and Mekanism.[6]

The pack also has the startup ding enabled with enableDingDongStartupSound, so you hear a sound when the game finishes loading. dingDongSound is left at the default experience orb pickup sound. Finally, recipe advancements are turned off via disableRecipeAdvancements.[6]

How do you progress through Utilitarian?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Utilitarian doesn't have a tier ladder in this pack. The recipe list shows a set of standalone utility items and blocks, each with its own crafting recipe, so you can grab whatever helps you whenever you like.[2]

Unverified The sources here do not show any quest chapter that covers this mod, so there is no quest order I can give you. If you want to check, look through the pack's quest book yourself.

Crafts that build on each other

A few recipes use another Utilitarian item as an ingredient, so those are the closest thing to steps in this mod. The Lapis Lamp leads on to the Inverted Lapis Lamp, and the Inverted Redstone Lamp follows the same idea. The recipes are shown below.[2]

The trader carpets work the same way. Each colour of Trader Carpet, such as the White Trader Carpet, is crafted first. You then turn it into the matching Trapped Trader Carpet, such as the White Trapped Trader Carpet. Every colour in the recipe list has both versions.[2]

What the pack changed

The pack adds its own recipe for the Redstone Clock through a KubeJS script. The mod's own recipe for it is still in the recipe list too. The recipe below is the one the pack added.[2]

Which Utilitarian config options matter?

3 parts

Most of Utilitarian runs quietly in the background, but a few settings in its common config change what you see and hear while the game starts up. Here's how this pack has them set.[6]

Startup ding

enableDingDongStartupSound is set to true, so the game plays a ding once it finishes loading. That's handy if you tab out during a long modded startup. The sound comes from dingDongSound, which this pack leaves at the mod default, entity.experience_orb.pickup, the familiar XP orb pickup sound.[6]

Recipe advancements

disableRecipeAdvancements is set to true in this pack. Recipe advancements are disabled, which helps keep your advancements screen from filling up with recipe entries.[6]

Filtering startup messages

The No Startup Messages module is switched on with noStartupMessagesEnabled set to true. It blocks any message that contains one of the word sequences listed in noStartupMessagesMessages.[6]

  • The pack's list blocks messages containing "This game is using an alpha build of Ender IO" and "[Warning] Ender IO is in alpha".[6]
  • It also blocks "The Mekanism Team" and "Mekanism is currently in alpha".[6]
  • It blocks "Thanks for using" and "This pack contains Observable" too.[6]
Tip: If you'd rather see those startup notices again, you can remove entries from the message list or set the module toggle to false in utilitarian-common.toml.[6]

Unverified The mod's default values for the startup ding toggle, the recipe advancement toggle and the No Startup Messages settings aren't listed in the pack's config file. So it can't be confirmed which of those the pack changed from the defaults.
