What is Utilitarian?
Utilitarian is one of the mods bundled in the pack. This pack ships version 1.21.1-0.19.2 (the file is utilitarian-1.21.1-0.19.2.jar), and it has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modlist rather than a recent addition.[1]
Unverified The sources I have don't describe what Utilitarian's items and blocks do, who it suits best, or where it fits in the pack's progression. I can't confirm any of that, so I'm leaving it out rather than guessing. There is also no confirmed information on in-pack recipes, config options or quests for this mod.
How do you get started with Utilitarian?
4 parts
Utilitarian is a pile of small quality-of-life blocks and tools, and nearly all of its recipes here are the mod's own, so you can start with whatever helps you most. This is the order I'd make things in. It's my suggestion, not a fixed progression.[2]
Start with the Trowel
The Trowel is the simplest tool in the mod to craft, so it's a good first item. Its tooltip says shift right click changes its pull setting.[2][3]

Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal
The pack changed how you get Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal. Both are shapeless recipes registered under the actuallyadditions namespace, not Utilitarian's own. They are listed here so you know where to craft them.[2]
Redstone helpers
Once you start building contraptions, the Redstone Clock is handy. Right click it with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency, and sneak while doing so to increase it faster.[2][3]

The TPS Meter outputs a redstone signal based on the dimension's TPS, which is useful if you want automation to react to server lag.[2][3]

Quiet and safe bases
The Sound Muffler mutes sounds within a set block radius. That's a nice fix for noisy machine rooms. I couldn't confirm the exact radius from the sources I have.[2][3]
If wandering traders keep landing on top of you, craft a trader carpet. Arriving traders end up on that block instead of in your face. There is one carpet per dye color, and the white one is shown here.[2][3]

Unverified There is no in-jar guidebook for this mod, and I found no quests for it in the pack. What the Trowel's pull setting does exactly, and the sound muffler's default radius, could not be confirmed from the available sources.
How does Utilitarian work?
5 parts
Utilitarian is a collection of small utility blocks and items rather than a big machine mod. The sources for this pack don't describe any power system, multiblock structure, or fluid and item pipe network, so this section sticks to the behaviours that are actually documented.[3]
Unverified Power use, multiblock setups and automation details for Utilitarian are not covered by the available sources. The Fluid Hopper, Angel Block and Block Magnet have in-pack recipes, but the sources don't explain how they behave.
Lamps
The Lapis Lamp lights up an area on the client side only. The area is still dark in the world, you just can't see it. That makes it a visual tool, not a way to stop mob spawns.[2][3]

Both the Inverted Lapis Lamp and the Inverted Redstone Lamp are crafted from a lever plus the matching normal lamp.[2]
Redstone and utility tools
- Redstone clock: right-click the block with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency. Sneak while doing it to increase the frequency faster.[3]
- TPS meter: outputs a redstone signal based on the dimension's TPS.[3]
- Trowel: shift right-click to change its pull setting.[3]
- Sound muffler: mutes sounds within a set block radius. The tooltip shows the radius, but the sources don't give a value.[3]
- Wind charge: its tooltip says it replenishes your breath under water.[3]
- Slime bucket: gets visibly excited when you visit a slime chunk, so it works as a slime chunk detector.[3]
Controlling traders and raiders
Trader carpets, such as the Black Trader Carpet, make arriving wandering traders end up on that block instead of right in your face. Each carpet is crafted from a plain carpet of the same colour plus a small flower.[2][3]

The trapped version, such as the Black Trapped Trader Carpet, kills the trader that lands on it. It is crafted from the matching normal trader carpet and a tripwire hook. The recipe dump shows these recipes for black, blue, brown, cyan, gray, green and light blue. The rest of the list is cut off in the sources.[2][3]

Unverified The No Soliciting Banner and the Restraining Order have recipes in the pack, but the sources don't say what they do.
Pack-changed recipes
The pack changes how Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal are made. Both now come from recipes registered under Actually Additions, not Utilitarian's own recipes.[2]
Pack config
The pack's Utilitarian config leaves a few housekeeping options switched on. enableDingDongStartupSound plays a ding at startup. dingDongSound is set to entity.experience_orb.pickup. disableRecipeAdvancements is true.[4]
logSuppressorEnabled is on, and logSuppressorStartsWithMessages hides log messages that start with "Encountered unknown". noStartupMessagesEnabled is also on, and noStartupMessagesMessages lists word sequences that stop a message from showing. These include "This game is using an alpha build of Ender IO", "Mekanism is currently in alpha" and "This pack contains Observable".[4]
How do you progress through Utilitarian?
3 parts
Utilitarian doesn't have a tier ladder in this pack. The recipe list shows a set of standalone utility items and blocks, each with its own crafting recipe, so you can grab whatever helps you whenever you like.[2]
Unverified The sources here do not show any quest chapter that covers this mod, so there is no quest order I can give you. If you want to check, look through the pack's quest book yourself.
Crafts that build on each other
A few recipes use another Utilitarian item as an ingredient, so those are the closest thing to steps in this mod. The Lapis Lamp leads on to the Inverted Lapis Lamp, and the Inverted Redstone Lamp follows the same idea. The recipes are shown below.[2]

The trader carpets work the same way. Each colour of Trader Carpet, such as the White Trader Carpet, is crafted first. You then turn it into the matching Trapped Trader Carpet, such as the White Trapped Trader Carpet. Every colour in the recipe list has both versions.[2]

Other Utilitarian crafts
- The Snad family in this mod is Snad, Red Snad, Soul Snad and Drit. Some of their recipes are shown below.[2]
- Trowel, Block Magnet, Fluid Hopper and Well Behaved Dropper are standalone crafts, and their recipes are shown below.[2]
- TPS Meter, Sound Muffler and Un-Name Tag are small crafts built from vanilla items.[2]
- Angel Block has more than one recipe in the mod, listed as angel_block and angel_block_rot, and both give you the same block.[2]
- The anti-trader and anti-raider set is the No Soliciting Banner, Restraining Order and Raider Outpost Claim Block.[2]

What the pack changed
The pack adds its own recipe for the Redstone Clock through a KubeJS script. The mod's own recipe for it is still in the recipe list too. The recipe below is the one the pack added.[2]

The recipes that make Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal are also marked as changed by the pack. They sit under the actuallyadditions namespace, not under Utilitarian itself.[2]

Which Utilitarian config options matter?
3 parts
Utilitarian keeps all of its settings in one file, config/utilitarian-common.toml. Most of it is quality-of-life stuff: log clean-up, startup messages and a little sound. Here is how this pack sets each option.[4]
Startup sound
- enableDingDongStartupSound is true in this pack, so you get a ding when the game finishes starting up.[4]
- dingDongSound is set to entity.experience_orb.pickup, which is the same as the mod's stated default, so the pack did not change it. You can put another sound name there if you want a different ding.[4]
Log and startup message clean-up
The pack turns on both of Utilitarian's tools for keeping the logs and startup chatter tidy.[4]
- logSuppressorEnabled is true. The only active filter is logSuppressorStartsWithMessages, which blocks log messages that start with "Encountered unknown".[4]
- logSuppressorContainsMessages, logSuppressorEndsWithMessages and logSuppressorRegexMessages are all empty lists, so they filter nothing. The file itself warns you to skip the regex option unless you know what you're doing.[4]
- noStartupMessagesEnabled is true. Its list, noStartupMessagesMessages, hides messages containing: "This game is using an alpha build of Ender IO", "The Mekanism Team", "Thanks for using", "Mekanism is currently in alpha", "[Warning] Ender IO is in alpha" and "This pack contains Observable".[4]
Recipe advancements
disableRecipeAdvancements is true in this pack, so recipe advancements are disabled.[4]

The 7.0 update is the most recent bump in these changelogs, and 8.1 still ships that same 0.19.2 build.[1][21]
Unverified What actually changed inside Utilitarian in each of these versions (new features, fixes, recipe or config changes) is unverified, because no changelogs for the shipped jars are available.
