What is Utilitarian?

This pack ships Utilitarian at version 1.21.1-0.13.2, built for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 0.41 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what Utilitarian's items and blocks do, and no in-jar guidebook was found, so I can't say what it adds or who it suits best. Check the mod's own pages or look in-game before relying on any specific feature.

Unverified No quests in this pack were found that involve Utilitarian, and it doesn't appear on the ATM Star quest path. Don't count on quest guidance for it, and you don't need it to progress along that path.

How do you get started with Utilitarian?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.53 guide

Utilitarian is a grab bag of small utility items, so there's no strict progression. This is the order I'd craft things in, using the recipes that are actually in the pack.[2]

Start with a Trowel

The Trowel is a simple first craft. Once you have it, shift right click to change its pull setting.[2][3]

Set up a Redstone Clock

The Redstone Clock is handy for simple automation. Right click it with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency, and sneak while doing so to increase it faster.[2][3]

The pack adds its own crafting recipe for the clock, and the mod's original recipe is still there too. Here is the one the pack added.[2]

Keep an eye on lag with the TPS Meter

The TPS Meter outputs a redstone signal based on the TPS of the dimension it's in, so you can wire it into your redstone.[2][3]

Handy extras

The Angel Block and the Fluid Hopper both have crafting recipes in the pack. The sources I have don't describe how either one behaves, so check them in game.[2]

Tame wandering traders

Trader carpets, such as the White Trader Carpet, make arriving traders end up on that block instead of in your face. They come in many colours.[2][3]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/white_soliciting_carpet

Watch out: The trapped variants, like the White Trapped Trader Carpet, will kill the trader that lands on them. Don't put one down by accident.[2][3]

How does Utilitarian work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.53 guide

Utilitarian is a mod of small utility blocks rather than a big machine tech tree. The sources I have only explain a handful of its mechanics, so this section covers what is confirmed and flags what isn't. There's no in-jar guidebook or official documentation to draw on.[2][3]

Redstone Clock

The Redstone Clock is your go-to for timing redstone builds. Right click it with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency, and sneak while doing so to increase it faster.[3]

In this pack the clock's crafting recipe is one the pack added itself, not the mod's own, so don't expect to find it behaving like it does in other setups.[2]

Trader Carpets

Trader carpets, like the Black Trader Carpet, are a neat way to manage wandering traders. When a trader arrives, it ends up on the carpet instead of right in your face.[3]

The trapped variants, like the Black Trapped Trader Carpet, are meaner. The tooltip says a trapped carpet will kill the trader. The carpets come in several colors, and each trapped version is made from the matching normal carpet.[2][3]

Other tools and blocks

  • The TPS meter outputs a redstone signal based on the TPS of the dimension it is in, which is handy if you want to react to server lag with redstone.[3]
  • The trowel has a pull setting. Shift right click to change it.[3]
  • The Fluid Hopper has a crafting recipe in this pack, but the sources don't explain how it moves fluids.[2]
  • The Angel Block has two recipes that produce it, but the sources don't describe how it behaves.[2]

Config options in this pack

The mod's common config only has a few options, and they're about startup behavior and recipe advancements rather than machine balance. The pack sets dingDongSound to entity.experience_orb.pickup, which is also the mod's stated default. enableDingDongStartupSound and noStartupMessagesEnabled are both turned on, and disableRecipeAdvancements is set to true.[4]

Unverified Power, fluid and item handling details for the Fluid Hopper, the Angel Block's behavior, and any multiblock structures could not be confirmed from the available sources, so they are left out rather than guessed.

How do you progress through Utilitarian?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.53 guide

Unverified The sources I have don't include any quest that involves Utilitarian, and they don't describe a tier system for it. There is no quest-driven progression to follow, so treat the mod as a set of standalone crafting recipes.

What the recipes do show is that everything in Utilitarian is crafted at a normal crafting grid, with no machine or multiblock step. The order below is just a suggested way to browse it, not an official progression.[2]

Basic utility items

Start with the simple one-step crafts: the Trowel, the Fluid Hopper, and the Snad family. Snad, Red Snad and Soul Snad are each made shapeless from a single sand-type block, and Drit has its own shaped recipe.[2]

Redstone Clock: a pack-added recipe

The Redstone Clock has two recipes in this pack. The mod's own recipe is there, and the pack adds a second one through a script. Either one gives you the same item, and the block below shows the pack's version.[2]

Utility blocks and tools

The Angel Block and the TPS Meter are both shaped crafts. The Angel Block has two recipe entries, one of them named the rot variant, and both produce the same item.[2]

No Soliciting items

The No Soliciting set is the largest group in the mod. The No Soliciting Banner is a shaped craft, and the Restraining Order is shapeless.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/restraining_order

Trader carpets come in a version for every carpet color, and each one is a shapeless craft. Each color then has a trapped upgrade, which is crafted from the matching plain trader carpet. Here is the red pair as an example: Red Trader Carpet and Red Trapped Trader Carpet.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/red_soliciting_carpet

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/red_trapped_soliciting_carpet

Tip: Make the plain trader carpet first, because the trapped version needs it as an input. Every other color follows the same two-step pattern.[2]

Which Utilitarian config options matter?

Utilitarian has very few settings that this pack touches. The pack's common config file sets two options, and both are switched on.[5]

  • disableRecipeAdvancements is set to true. The file describes it as disabling recipe advancements, so Utilitarian's recipe advancements are turned off in this pack.[5]
  • noStartupMessagesEnabled is set to true. The file describes it as enabling the No Startup Messages module, so that module is active in this pack.[5]

Unverified The provided config file doesn't show Utilitarian's default values for these options. It's unconfirmed whether the pack changed either one from the mod default, so treat both as the pack's chosen settings rather than confirmed changes.
