What is Utilitarian?
Utilitarian is part of the pack, which ships version 1.21.1-0.19.2 of the mod (file utilitarian-1.21.1-0.19.2.jar). It has been in the pack since version 0.41 or earlier, so it isn't a recent addition.[1]
Unverified The sources available for this guide don't describe what Utilitarian's items and blocks do, so this overview doesn't go into its features. Check back once the mod's recipes and configs have been documented.
How do you get started with Utilitarian?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Utilitarian is a pile of small quality-of-life blocks and tools, and nearly all of its recipes here are the mod's own, so you can start with whatever helps you most. This is the order I'd make things in. It's my suggestion, not a fixed progression.[2]
Start with the Trowel
The Trowel is the simplest tool in the mod to craft, so it's a good first item. Its tooltip says shift right click changes its pull setting.[2][3]

Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal
The pack changed how you get Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal. Both are shapeless recipes registered under the actuallyadditions namespace, not Utilitarian's own. They are listed here so you know where to craft them.[2]
Redstone helpers
Once you start building contraptions, the Redstone Clock is handy. Right click it with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency, and sneak while doing so to increase it faster.[2][3]

The TPS Meter outputs a redstone signal based on the dimension's TPS, which is useful if you want automation to react to server lag.[2][3]

Quiet and safe bases
The Sound Muffler mutes sounds within a set block radius. That's a nice fix for noisy machine rooms. I couldn't confirm the exact radius from the sources I have.[2][3]
If wandering traders keep landing on top of you, craft a trader carpet. Arriving traders end up on that block instead of in your face. There is one carpet per dye color, and the white one is shown here.[2][3]

If raiders keep coming back to an outpost, place the Raider Outpost Claim Block in it to stop them returning.[2][3]

Unverified There is no in-jar guidebook for this mod, and I found no quests for it in the pack. What the Trowel's pull setting does exactly, and the sound muffler's default radius, could not be confirmed from the available sources.
How does Utilitarian work?
7 parts
Here's what the sources show about how Utilitarian's blocks and items behave in this pack, grouped by what they do.[3]
Trader carpets
Put a Trader Carpet down and arriving traders will end up on that block instead of in your face. It comes in many colours, such as Black Trader Carpet and Light Blue Trader Carpet.[3]
Crafting Shapeless
Black Carpet
- any small flower
Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/black_soliciting_carpet
The other colours use the matching coloured carpet in their own recipes.
The trapped version, for example Black Trapped Trader Carpet, is trapped and will kill the trader. Each trapped carpet has its own recipe, shown here for black.[3][4]

Keeping raiders and visitors away
The Raider Outpost Claim Block is meant to be placed in an outpost to stop raiders from returning. The mod's outposts tag lists the pillager outpost.[3][5]

Lamps
The Lapis Lamp lights up an area on the client side only. The area is still dark in the world, you just can't see it.[3]

Both lamp types have an inverted version: Inverted Lapis Lamp and Inverted Redstone Lamp.[3][4]
Redstone and sound tools
- Redstone Clock: right click it with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency, and sneak to increase it faster. A "Clock frequency" message shows the current value.[3]
- TPS Meter: outputs a redstone signal based on the dimension's TPS.[3]
- Sound Muffler: mutes sounds within a set block radius. It is also listed in the mod's mufflers block tag.[3][6]
Items and other blocks
The Trowel has a pull setting that you change with a shift right click.[3]
The Slime Bucket gets visibly excited to see its friends when you visit a slime chunk.[3]
Grrass and Drit are hazard blocks, and both hurt you. Grass can grow on Drit, and the Grrass description warns you not to let it be struck by lightning. Mining Grrass gives you Drit unless you use Silk Touch, which drops the Grrass block itself.[3][7]
Fluid Hopper and Block Magnet
You can craft the Fluid Hopper and the Block Magnet (Block Magnet) in this pack with the recipes below.[3][4]
Crafting Shaped

Pack changes
The pack changes the recipes for Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal. They are registered under Actually Additions recipe ids and turn coal or charcoal into the tiny versions.[3][4]
In disableRecipeAdvancements the pack sets recipe advancements to disabled. It also enables a startup ding sound via enableDingDongStartupSound, using the sound set in dingDongSound, which is the experience orb pickup sound.[8]
The pack also turns on the mod's log suppressor with logSuppressorEnabled, which hides log messages that start with "Encountered unknown". noStartupMessagesEnabled is on too, and hides a list of startup messages, including ones from Ender IO and Mekanism.[8]
How do you progress through Utilitarian?
3 parts
Utilitarian is a pile of small quality-of-life items, and the recipes show no ladder of tiers to climb. Everything here is made in a normal crafting grid, so you can pick up whichever item solves your current problem.[4]
Crafting chains
The only real progression inside the mod is a few items that are built from another Utilitarian item. Craft the base item first, then upgrade it.[4]
- Lapis Lamp is the base for Inverted Lapis Lamp. The Inverted Redstone Lamp is a separate recipe built on a vanilla lamp instead.[4]
- Every colour of Trader Carpet, for example White Trader Carpet, is the base for its Trapped version, for example White Trapped Trader Carpet.[4]
Recipes the pack changed
The pack adds its own recipe for the Redstone Clock, which is the one to use in this pack.[4]
Shaped (kubejs)
| Empty slot | Empty slot | |
| Empty slot | Empty slot |
Recipe id: kubejs:kjs/utilitarian_redstone_clock
The recipes for Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal also come from the Actually Additions namespace and are marked as changed by the pack, so don't assume mod defaults here.[4]
Everything else
The rest of the mod's items use their own unchanged recipes. You can look up each one on its item page, including Snad, Trowel, Fluid Hopper and Angel Block.[4]
Which Utilitarian config options matter?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Utilitarian keeps all of its settings in one file, config/utilitarian-common.toml. Most of it is quality-of-life stuff: log clean-up, startup messages and a little sound. Here is how this pack sets each option.[9]
Startup sound
- enableDingDongStartupSound is true in this pack, so you get a ding when the game finishes starting up.[9]
- dingDongSound is set to entity.experience_orb.pickup, which is the same as the mod's stated default, so the pack did not change it. You can put another sound name there if you want a different ding.[9]
Log and startup message clean-up
The pack turns on both of Utilitarian's tools for keeping the logs and startup chatter tidy.[9]
- logSuppressorEnabled is true. The only active filter is logSuppressorStartsWithMessages, which blocks log messages that start with "Encountered unknown".[9]
- logSuppressorContainsMessages, logSuppressorEndsWithMessages and logSuppressorRegexMessages are all empty lists, so they filter nothing. The file itself warns you to skip the regex option unless you know what you're doing.[9]
- noStartupMessagesEnabled is true. Its list, noStartupMessagesMessages, hides messages containing: "This game is using an alpha build of Ender IO", "The Mekanism Team", "Thanks for using", "Mekanism is currently in alpha", "[Warning] Ender IO is in alpha" and "This pack contains Observable".[9]
Recipe advancements
disableRecipeAdvancements is true in this pack, so recipe advancements are disabled.[9]
