Utilitarian is a mod in All the Mons 1.3.0, where it is version 1.21.1-0.19.2. A bunch of different functionality, neatly packaged in different modules that can be disabled and enabled depending on the users needs. Also has an angel block, snad, fluid hopper and a redstone clock. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Utilitarian?

2 parts

Utilitarian is a utility mod, and the pack ships it as version 1.21.1-0.19.2. The sources I have don't describe its full feature set, so I'm only covering what the pack itself shows.[1]

Where you'll meet it in the pack

The one place the pack's quests use Utilitarian is the Deoxys quest "Deoxys" quest in the Legendaries chapter. Its task list includes the Block Magnet, so you'll need it for this quest.[2]

In the first trial of that rite, you set an Ancient DNA Sample on the altar with a Plutonium Pellet and lay a 3x3 platform of Magnets beneath it. The quest describes Deoxys as the second most demanding rite in the world, so this mod's part is small but you can't skip it.[2]

Who it's for

Based on the quest, it matters to you if you're heading for the Hoenn legendaries and want to summon Deoxys. The quest is placed after The Summoning Altar, so you'll reach it in the legendary-hunting part of the pack.[2]

Unverified The other items and blocks in Utilitarian, their recipes and any config options aren't covered by the sources I have, so I can't say what else the mod does in this pack. The sources also don't show Utilitarian on the ATM Star path.

How do you get started with Utilitarian?

5 parts

Utilitarian adds a set of small utility blocks and tools. The sources here don't set out a fixed progression for it, so this is a sensible order to craft things in, starting with the tool you will use first.[3]

Start with the Trowel

Make the Trowel first. Once you have it, shift right click to change its pull setting.[3][4]

Then the Block Magnet

Next comes the Block Magnet. The pack's quest book uses it in the Legendaries chapter, in the Hoenn group. The Deoxys quest "Deoxys" quest comes after The Summoning Altar and asks you to lay a 3x3 platform of Magnets beneath the altar. Knowing the recipe early saves you a scramble later.[2][3]

Redstone helpers

The Redstone Clock is a block you right click with an empty hand to change its pulse frequency. Sneak while doing it to increase the frequency faster.[3][4]

Taming noise and traders

The Sound Muffler mutes sounds within a set block radius.[3][4]

A Trader Carpet, such as the White Trader Carpet, makes arriving traders end up on that block instead of in your face. The pack has a recipe for each colour.[3][4]

Watch out: The Trapped versions of the carpets, like the White Trapped Trader Carpet, will kill the trader. Don't place one by mistake if you want to keep your traders alive.[4]

Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal

Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal are crafted through Actually Additions recipes, and the pack has changed both of them. Use the in-pack recipes below instead of assuming a mod default.[3]

How does Utilitarian work?

7 parts

Utilitarian is a collection of small utility blocks and items. The sources for this pack describe redstone, lighting, trader and raider control, and the pack's recipe changes, so those are what this section covers. They do not describe power, multiblocks or machine screens for this mod.[4]

Redstone tools

The Redstone Clock is the main automation piece with a described behaviour. Right click it with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency, and sneak while doing so to increase it faster. The block shows a "Clock frequency" message each time you change it.[4]

This pack adds its own crafting recipe for the clock, alongside the mod's own recipe. Here is the pack's version:[3][5]

The TPS Meter outputs a redstone signal based on the dimension's TPS. The sources don't give its signal range or how it maps TPS to signal strength.[4]

Lamps

The Lapis Lamp lights up an area on the client side only. Its own tooltip says it is still dark, you just can't see it.[4]

You can turn either lamp into its inverted form by combining it with a lever. That gives you the Inverted Lapis Lamp and the Inverted Redstone Lamp.[3]

Item and fluid handling

The Trowel has a pull setting. Shift right click to change it. The sources don't say what the individual settings do.[4]

The Fluid Hopper and Block Magnet (the Block Magnet) both have in-pack recipes, so you can craft them. The sources give no description of how either one behaves.[3][4]

Traders and raiders

Trader Carpets (such as the Black Trader Carpet) make arriving traders end up on that block instead of in your face. The trapped versions, such as the Black Trapped Trader Carpet, will kill the trader.[4]

To make a trapped carpet, combine a tripwire hook with the matching plain carpet.[3]

The Raider Outpost Claim Block (Raider Outpost Claim Block) is meant to be placed in an outpost to stop raiders from returning.[4]

Hazard blocks

  • Drit hurts, but grass can grow on it. Players can be killed by it.[4]
  • Grrass also hurts, and its description warns you not to let it be struck by lightning.[4]

Pack changes to Utilitarian

The pack's script removes the Utilitarian tiny fuel recipes for coal and charcoal, and the Utilitarian green dye recipe. Tiny fuel still exists, though. Through Actually Additions recipes that the pack changed, one coal gives 8 Tiny Coal and one charcoal gives 8 Tiny Charcoal.[3][5]

Config

The options in dingDongSound and its neighbours control housekeeping rather than gameplay. The startup ding is enabled and uses the experience orb pickup sound. disableRecipeAdvancements is set to true.[6]

The pack also turns on logSuppressorEnabled and noStartupMessagesEnabled. These hide chosen log lines and startup messages from other mods, so they don't change how any block works.[6]

How do you progress through Utilitarian?

2 parts

The sources show no tier ladder or upgrade chain for Utilitarian in this pack. It is a set of small utility blocks and items, so instead of a tier list this section covers the quest that uses the mod, plus the recipes the pack changed.[2][3]

Where the quests use it

The one quest in the sources that asks for Utilitarian is "Deoxys" quest in the Legendaries chapter. One of its tasks is the Block Magnet. It comes after The Summoning Altar and one other quest.[2]

The quest text explains why you need it. The first trial of the Deoxys rite has you lay a 3x3 platform of Magnets beneath the altar, so craft enough of them ahead of time.[2]

Recipes the pack changed

The pack adds its own recipe for the Redstone Clock with a KubeJS script. The recipe dump lists it alongside the mod's original recipe.[3]

The recipes for Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal are also marked as changed by the pack. They belong to Actually Additions, not Utilitarian. The sources don't say what was changed, so check the recipes below instead of assuming the mod's defaults.[3]

Which All the Mons quests use Utilitarian?

3 parts

In this pack, the only quest that involves this mod is "Deoxys" quest, in the Legendaries chapter (Hoenn). The mod's part is the Block Magnet, which is one of the items the quest asks you to hand in.[2]

Deoxys, step by step

This is a big one. The quest text calls it the second most demanding rite in the world, only rivaled by the Shiny Pika Star's rite, and it is performed across three trials. The Block Magnet comes in during the first trial.[2]

  1. Set an Ancient DNA Sample on the altar with a Plutonium Pellet and lay a 3x3 platform of Magnets beneath it. Run the ritual in the Ether River of Eternal Starlight, but only while a meteor shower falls and you wear four MekaSuit pieces fitted with Radiation Shielding Units. A Deoxys Crystal then drops into the world.[2]
  2. Take the dormant crystal to the Birth Island and loose it above its Deoxys Base. It flits across the meteorite floor, and you have to chase it down and strike it repeatedly until it reaches full charge and settles, lit, on the base.[2]
  3. Build the final rite around that base: a ring of Arcane Crystal Obelisks and a pair of Source Jars, each filled to 10,000 source. Then cast the Deoxys Meteorite onto the altar along with the Power Bracer, Power Belt, Power Anklet and Power Weight, and perform the ritual.[2]

What the quest asks you to hold

The task list covers an Ancient DNA Sample, a Plutonium Pellet, the Block Magnet, a structure task, a Deoxys Crystal, a Relay, a Source Jar, an Arcane Crystal Obelisk, the four Power items (Anklet, Weight, Bracer and Belt) and a final custom task.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

Deoxys is listed in the Legendaries chapter under Hoenn, and it comes after The Summoning Altar quest (the quest data also lists 0461FE9EE7BD285B as a prerequisite).[2]

Which Utilitarian config options matter?

4 parts

Utilitarian is a small utility mod, and in this pack all of its settings live in one file, config/utilitarian-common.toml. Here are the options you're most likely to touch, with the exact values this pack uses.[6]

Startup ding sound

  • enableDingDongStartupSound is set to true, so the game plays a ding sound at startup.[6]
  • dingDongSound is set to "entity.experience_orb.pickup". The config comment names that same sound as the default, so the pack did not change it. The option is the name of the sound to play.[6]

Recipe advancements

disableRecipeAdvancements is true in this pack, which means recipe advancements are disabled.[6]

Log suppressor

The log suppressor is switched on through logSuppressorEnabled. It stops log messages that match your filters from being printed, which helps keep the game log readable in a big pack. This pack fills in the contains and starts-with filters.[6]

Watch out: The config comment for the regex filter says not to use it if you don't know what you're doing. Stick to the plain word-sequence lists unless you're comfortable with regex.[6]

No Startup Messages

noStartupMessagesEnabled is true, which turns on the No Startup Messages module. The list in noStartupMessagesMessages stops any message containing one of these word sequences: "This game is using an alpha build of Ender IO", "The Mekanism Team", "Thanks for using", "Mekanism is currently in alpha", "[Warning] Ender IO is in alpha", "This pack contains Observable" and "Makeship".[6]

Tip: If you add a mod with a startup message you don't want to see, you can add a word sequence from it to the startup messages list. The comment says a message is stopped if it contains any listed word sequence.[6]
