What is Utilitarian?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 6.5 guide

Utilitarian is included in this pack as version 1.21.1-0.18.2, so you can use it in your world. It's been part of the pack for a while: it was first added in pack version 2.25 or earlier.[1]

Unverified The available sources don't confirm what this mod adds, who it's aimed at, or where it fits in the pack's progression. Check the mod's items in JEI/EMI in-game to see what it offers. This site does hold All the Mods 11's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you get started with Utilitarian?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Utilitarian is a mod of small helper blocks and gadgets, and the items covered here are all crafted in a crafting grid. The order below is my suggestion, based on what each item does.[2][3]

Start with the Trowel

Make the Trowel first. Shift right click with it to change its pull setting.[3]

Then the Redstone Clock

Next, make a Redstone Clock. Right click the placed block with an empty hand to change its pulse frequency, and sneak while doing it to increase the frequency faster. This pack adds its own recipe for the clock through KubeJS, so craft it the way shown below.[2][3]

Handy utility blocks

After that, pick the blocks that fit what you are building. The Tps Meter outputs a redstone signal based on the dimension's TPS, so you can wire it straight into redstone. The Sound Muffler mutes sounds within a block radius, and its tooltip shows the exact radius in game.[2][3]

Dealing with traders and raiders

A soliciting carpet makes arriving traders end up on that block instead of in your face. The trapped versions are a darker option, because their tooltip says they will kill the trader. Here is the white carpet as an example.[2][3]

A little dirt

The Drit block is worth knowing about. Its tooltip warns that it hurts, and says grass can grow on it.[2][3]

Unverified The sources here do not show a quest chapter or guidebook entry that places Utilitarian in the pack's progression, so the order above is a suggestion rather than something the pack enforces.

How does Utilitarian work?

6 parts

Utilitarian is a grab bag of small utility blocks and items rather than a big machine mod. This section covers how the ones with documented behaviour work in the pack, starting with the redstone tools.[3]

Redstone tools

The Redstone Clock pulses on its own. Right click the placed block with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency, and sneak while doing it to increase the frequency faster. The block shows a "Clock frequency" message when you adjust it.[3]

The pack adds its own crafting recipe for the clock through a KubeJS script, so you will see it listed as a pack recipe alongside the mod's own one.[4][5]

The Tps Meter outputs a redstone signal based on the TPS of the dimension it is in. That makes it handy for tying a lag warning or a shutdown circuit into your redstone.[3]

Traders and raiders

The soliciting carpets steer wandering trader arrivals. Arriving traders end up on the carpet instead of in your face. The trapped variants, such as the Black Trapped Soliciting Carpet, will kill the trader instead.[3]

Each colour of carpet and trapped carpet is its own item, and the plain ones drop themselves when broken. Pick the colour that blends in with your build.[3][6][7]

The No Raider Block is meant to be placed in an outpost to stop raiders from returning. The mod's outposts structure tag lists the vanilla pillager outpost.[3][8]

Drit and Grrass

Drit hurts when you touch it, and grass can grow on it. That grass is Grrass, which also hurts, and you should not let it be struck by lightning. Both have their own death messages, so expect to see "killed by drit" or "killed by angry grass" if you get careless.[3]

Breaking Cursed Grrass with Silk Touch gives you the block itself. Without Silk Touch it drops Drit.[9]

Lamps and sound

The Lapis Lamp lights up an area on the client side only. The area is still dark in the game, you just can't see it. Inverted versions of the lapis and redstone lamps also exist: Inverted Lapis Lamp and Inverted Redstone Lamp.[3]

The Sound Muffler mutes sounds within a set block radius, and it is the one block in the mod's mufflers block tag.[3][10]

Pack changes and config

Besides the extra Redstone Clock recipe, the pack removes the crafting recipes for Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal.[3][4]

The mod's farmland_cansurvive block tag lists fences, plus the Productive Farming cantaloupe and honeydew melon. See Productive Farming for those crops.[11]

The pack's config file only covers quality-of-life settings, not gameplay. Recipe advancements are turned off with disableRecipeAdvancements. The startup ding is enabled with enableDingDongStartupSound and uses the experience orb pickup sound set in dingDongSound.[12]

The log suppressor is on via logSuppressorEnabled. In this pack it hides log messages starting with "Could not equip item ". The startup message filter is also on, and its list in noStartupMessagesMessages covers messages from Ender IO, JourneyMap and a few others.[12]

How do you progress through Utilitarian?

3 parts

Utilitarian has no tier ladder in this pack. The recipe list shows standalone crafting recipes, each either shaped or shapeless, so you can craft whichever item you need without unlocking anything first.[5]

What the pack changed: Redstone Clock

Which Utilitarian config options matter?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Utilitarian is mostly a quality-of-life mod, and its config lives in one file, config/utilitarian-common.toml. The options are about startup noise, log clutter and recipe advancements, not gameplay. Here is how this pack sets them.[13]

Startup ding sound

  • enableDingDongStartupSound is set to true, so the pack plays a ding when the game finishes starting up.[13]
  • dingDongSound is set to entity.experience_orb.pickup, which is the default sound named in the config comment. The pack did not change it. You can put another sound name there if you want a different ding.[13]

Recipe advancements

disableRecipeAdvancements is set to true in this pack. Recipe advancements are turned off, so you won't get the usual recipe-unlock advancement pop-ups.[13]

Log suppressor

logSuppressorEnabled is true. This module stops log messages that match your filters, which keeps the game log readable in a big pack. Only one filter is filled in.[13]

Watch out: The config comment says not to use the regex list unless you know what you're doing. Stick to the starts-with, contains and ends-with lists if you want to add your own filters.[13]

No startup messages

noStartupMessagesEnabled is true. This module blocks any message containing one of the listed word sequences. This pack lists "[Warning] Ender IO", "Hello, thank you", "Thank you", "Backup" and "JourneyMap" in noStartupMessagesMessages. That cuts down the chat spam from other mods when you load in.[13]

Unverified The source only shows the values this pack uses. Apart from the ding sound, it doesn't say which of them differ from the mod's defaults, so treat none of them as confirmed pack changes.
