What is The Twilight Forest?
The Twilight Forest comes included in this pack, so you can jump in without installing anything extra. The pack ships version 4.6.2856, built for Minecraft 1.21.1.[1]
It's also not a brand-new addition. The mod has been part of the pack since an earlier release.[1]
Unverified The available sources don't describe what The Twilight Forest adds, who it's aimed at, or where it fits in this pack's progression. Until confirmed sources are available, check the mod's own documentation for gameplay details.
How do you get started with The Twilight Forest?
4 parts
Your first milestone is getting into the Twilight Forest itself, the mysterious, magical woodlands this mod adds. Once you're in, the mod's advancements give you a solid roadmap for what to tackle first, so keep an eye on them as you explore.[2]
Unverified The steps for building and activating the portal into the Twilight Forest couldn't be confirmed for this pack, so they aren't covered here.
Your first adventures
Before you go boss hunting, the forest has smaller goals to warm up on. These are great for getting used to the dimension and grabbing early loot.[2]
- Hunt some of the local wildlife.[2]
- Defeat a spider in a Hedge Maze.[2]
- Clear out the Hollow Hills. They come in small, medium and large versions, each with its own advancement for defeating an enemy inside.[2]
- If you like collecting, go after everything that comes from the forest's trees: saplings, leaves, slabs and more. There's an advancement for getting all of it.[2]
The first boss chain
The early progression is gated, so you need to take these in order. Each boss unlocks the next area.[2]
- Slay the boss in its forest courtyard. It drops the item you need to get past the barrier magic surrounding the Lich's tower.[2]
- Climb the Lich's tower and slay the Lich at the top. You'll get a scepter that clears the poisonous mosquitoes from the Swamp, lets you see through the blinding darkness of the Dark Forest's curse, and helps you resist the Snowy Forest's chill.[2]
Handy early crafts
Once you're gathering the forest's own wood, you can make boats from it. There's a Canopy Boat and a Darkwood Boat, and each can be upgraded into a chest boat, which is nice for hauling loot back across the forest's water.[3]

As your stockpile of Twilight materials grows, you can pack it down into storage blocks. Steeleaf, Ironwood Ingot, Knightmetal Ingot, Fiery Ingot, Carminite and Arctic Fur all have a block form in this pack, and each one has a recipe going back the other way too.[3]

Shortcuts from other mods in this pack
This pack also has recipes from other mods that produce Twilight Forest items, including Steeleaf, Liveroot and Raven Feather, plus essence recipes for the mod's ingots. Once you're set up, that's a great way to farm materials without re-running the same areas.[3]

How does The Twilight Forest work?
7 parts
The Twilight Forest isn't a tech mod, so you won't find power networks or pipes here. Its core systems are the portal, the boss and progression rules, the Uncrafting Table, the magic tree cores and a handful of special blocks. Here's how each works in this pack, based on the pack's actual config.[2][4]
The portal
When you build a portal, the mod scans the water spaces that make it up, up to [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.maxPortalSize]] of 64 water spaces in this pack, which is the mod default. The mod warns that very high values can cause performance issues.[4]
[[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.checkPortalPlacement]] is on in this pack, so new portals are pre-checked for safety and redirect you to a safe alternate destination instead of failing to form. [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.destructivePortalLightning]] is also on, so the lightning that zaps the portal can set things on fire.[4]
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.originDimension]] is the Overworld, so that's where you can always travel to the Twilight Forest from and where you return to.[4]
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.allowPortalsInOtherDimensions]] is off, so you can't build Twilight portals outside that origin dimension.[4]
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.portalUnlockedByAdvancement]] is empty, so the portal isn't locked behind any advancement.[4]
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.portalCreationPermission]] is 0, which in this pack means any player can create portals.[4]
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.shouldReturnPortalBeUsable]] is on, so you don't need the activation item to use the return portal.[4]
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Dimension Settings.newPlayersSpawnInTF]] is off, so you start in the normal world and have to find your own way in.[4]
Bosses and progression
Progress in the Twilight Forest is gated by bosses. Each one unlocks the next area: slaying the Naga gets you past the barrier magic around the Lich's tower, and the Lich drops scepters that clear the Swamp's mosquitoes, lift the Dark Forest's blinding darkness and let you resist the Snowy Forest's chill. Locked biomes show a toast when you enter them.[2]
With bossesSpawnDropChests turned on in this pack, bosses put their loot in a chest where they originally spawned instead of dropping it on the ground. The Knight Phantoms are the exception, because their drops work differently.[2][4]
multiplayerFightAdjuster is set to NONE, so bosses don't scale for groups. They behave exactly as in a solo fight, with no extra health and no extra loot, which makes teaming up with friends a real advantage.[4]
The Carminite Tower's devices only obey you once you've settled the restless phantoms in the knight's tomb, so plan to do the Knight Phantoms first.[2]
Carminite devices
You can craft the Carminite Builder and the Carminite Reactor in this pack. Hang onto any Encased Towerwood Planks you pick up, since both of the recipe blocks below need it.[3]

The Uncrafting Table
The Uncrafting Table reverses normal crafting recipes, and it does more than that: the mod relies on it for special recipes you can only get through uncrafting. When a recipe uses a tag, the table can let you switch between ingredients.[2]
In this pack, [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Uncrafting Table.blacklistedUncraftingModIds]] is an empty list, so no mod's items are blocked from being uncrafted by that setting.[4]
Magic tree cores
The four magic tree cores are the Minewood Core, Sortingwood Core, Timewood Core and Transformation Core. Each works within a radius set in the config. In this pack all four are at 16 blocks, the mod default: [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.miningCoreRange]], [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.sortingCoreRange]], [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.timeCoreRange]] and [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.transformationCoreRange]]. The allowed range is 0 to 128, and 0 disables a core.[4]
Combat and survival mechanics
- Shield parrying: you can parry a projectile for 40 ticks after raising your shield ([[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Shield Parrying.shieldParryTicksArrow]]; 1 tick is 1/20 of a second). With [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Shield Parrying.parryNonTwilightAttacks]] off, only Twilight projectiles can be parried.[4]
- When you die, a Keepsake Casket holds your items. casketUUIDLocking is off in this pack, so other players can open your casket.[4]
- Ironwood and steeleaf gear comes enchanted when you craft it, and showEnchantmentsOnItems is on, so those enchantments also show in the creative inventory.[4]
- The Arctic Fur Block reduces fall damage by 90%, and the Knightmetal Block works as a stronger cactus.[2]
- You can make Skull Candles by right-clicking a vanilla skull with a candle, because disableSkullCandleCreation is off.[4]
- Cloud blocks check 32 blocks downward for weather logic (cloudBlockPrecipitationDistance). The mod suggests lowering this if your tick rate drops.[4]
Automating Twilight resources
The mod itself has no automation, but this pack adds recipes from other mods that produce Twilight items. Hostile Networks recipes make Cicada, Firefly, Liveroot, Moonworm, Raven Feather, Steeleaf and Torchberries.[3]

How do you progress through The Twilight Forest?
9 parts
The Twilight Forest's gear in this pack is built around a handful of signature materials. Each one unlocks its own armor, tools or machines, and most also compress into a storage block. This section walks you through each material family and the in-pack recipes that come with it.[3]
Unverified This pack has no quests for The Twilight Forest, so there is no official quest order to follow. The sources here also don't confirm the order you should tackle the bosses or structures, or where each material drops. Treat the tiers below as material families rather than a confirmed step-by-step route.
Ironwood
Ironwood Ingot is the base for a full armor set: Ironwood Helmet, Ironwood Chestplate, Ironwood Leggings and Ironwood Boots. It also makes tools, including the Ironwood Axe and Ironwood Hoe.[3]

How does The Twilight Forest work with other mods?
4 parts
The Twilight Forest has no quests in this pack, but its items still show up in plenty of recipes from other mods. Some of these links were added by the pack itself. Others come built into the other mods.[3]
Twilight trophies in the Oblivion Shard
This is the big one. The pack adds its own recipe for the Oblivion Shard, and it calls for the Hydra Trophy, the Snow Queen Trophy and the Ur-Ghast Trophy. The same recipe also uses items from EvilCraft, Forbidden & Arcanus and Steve's Carts. If you're working toward the Oblivion Shard, plan your Twilight Forest progression with those trophies in mind.[3]

Sawing Twilight wood
The pack adds sawing recipes for all eight Twilight wood types in two machines: the Mekanism sawing recipe type and the Productive Trees sawmill. The Mekanism version turns each log type into its matching planks plus Sawdust.[3]
- Twilight Oak Planks, Canopy Planks, Mangrove Planks and Darkwood Planks all have sawing recipes in both machines.[3]
- The magic woods are covered too: Timewood Planks, Transwood Planks, Minewood Planks and Sortingwood Planks.[3]

Mystical Agriculture has its own essence recipes for four Twilight metals: Ironwood Ingot, Steeleaf, Knightmetal Ingot and Fiery Ingot. These come from the matching essences, such as Knightmetal Essence and Fiery Ingot Essence. They are Mystical Agriculture's own recipes, not pack additions.[3]

Twilight way signs
The pack also adds recipes that turn each Twilight Forest sign into a matching Supplementaries way sign. For example, a Canopy Sign becomes a Way Sign Canopy. Every Twilight wood type gets one, from Twilight Oak through Sortingwood. That's great if you want your signposts to match your Twilight wood builds.[3]

Which The Twilight Forest config options matter?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
The Twilight Forest has a surprisingly long config file, but only a handful of options change how your playthrough feels. Here's how All the Mods 10 8.1 sets the ones you're most likely to run into, starting with the big one: the Uncrafting Table.[5]
The Uncrafting Table is switched off
In this pack, [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Uncrafting Table.disableUncraftingTable]] is set to true. That disables any use of the Uncrafting Table and also stops it from being crafted or showing up in loot. On top of that, [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Uncrafting Table.disableUncrafting]] is also true, which turns off the table's uncrafting function.[5]
Unverified The config file doesn't list the mod's default values for these two Uncrafting Table options, so it's unconfirmed whether disabling the table is a pack-specific change or the mod's own default.
Bosses
- bossesSpawnDropChests is true, so when you beat a boss its loot goes into a chest where the boss originally spawned instead of spilling on the ground. The Knight Phantoms are the exception, because their drops work differently.[5]
- multiplayerFightAdjuster is set to NONE, so bosses behave the same whether you fight solo or bring friends. You won't get extra loot for a group fight, and bosses won't gain the extra 20 hearts per nearby player that the MORE_HEALTH option would add.[5]
Getting into the Twilight Forest
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.originDimension]] is minecraft:overworld, and [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.allowPortalsInOtherDimensions]] is false, so build your portal in the Overworld. That's also where you return to.[5]
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.portalUnlockedByAdvancement]] is left empty, which means the portal isn't locked behind any advancement. [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.portalCreationPermission]] is 0, the mod default, so any player can make one.[5]
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.maxPortalSize]] stays at the mod default of 64 water spaces, so there's a cap on how big a portal pool the mod will check.[5]
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.destructivePortalLightning]] is true, so the lightning that zaps your new portal can set things on fire. Keep flammable builds away from it.[5]
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Portal Settings.shouldReturnPortalBeUsable]] is true, so the return portal works without needing the activation item.[5]
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Dimension Settings.newPlayersSpawnInTF]] is false, so you start in the Overworld like normal.[5]
Magic tree cores
The Timewood, Transformation, Minewood and Sortingwood cores all work in a radius of 16 blocks in this pack, which matches the mod default. The allowed range is 0 to 128, and setting one to 0 stops that core from working. The options are [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.timeCoreRange]], [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.transformationCoreRange]], [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.miningCoreRange]] and [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Magic Trees.sortingCoreRange]].[5]
Other options worth knowing
- casketUUIDLocking is false, so the Keepsake Casket that spawns when you die can be opened by other players, not just you.[5]
- [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Shield Parrying.shieldParryTicksArrow]] stays at the mod default of 40 ticks (1 tick is 1/20 of a second) after raising your shield to parry a projectile. [[config:config/twilightforest-common.toml#Shield Parrying.parryNonTwilightAttacks]] is false, so parrying only works on Twilight Forest projectiles.[5]
- disableSkullCandleCreation is false, so you can still make Skull Candles by right-clicking a vanilla skull with a candle.[5]
