What is Sophisticated Storage?
3 parts
Sophisticated Storage upgrades chests and barrels. The pack includes version 1.5.91. The quest book says the chests and barrels work just like the vanilla ones, but they have a slot for a Storage Upgrade. You can also add upgrades to extend what they do, and metals raise how much they hold.[1][2]
Where it sits in the quest book
The mod has its own quest, "Sophisticated Storage" quest, in the Basic Storage chapter. That chapter is in the Storage group and is chapter 30 of 70 in the book. It has 89 quests, and its welcome quest, "Basic Storage" quest, says it covers the basic ways to store items without needing power.[2]
Several quests come straight after "Sophisticated Storage" quest: the Copper Chest, the Storage Controller and the Upgrade Base.[2]
The chest ladder
- "Copper Chest" quest asks for a Copper Chest or Copper Barrel. The quest says you don't need it to make an Iron Chest, but it can save you some iron.[2]
- "Iron Chest" quest comes after the Sophisticated Storage and Copper Chest quests. It asks for an Iron Chest or Iron Barrel.[2]
- "Gold Chest" quest follows, asking for a Gold Chest or Gold Barrel.[2]
- "Diamond Chest" quest asks for a Diamond Chest or Diamond Barrel.[2]
- "Netherite Chest" quest is the last step. The quest calls the Netherite Chest the biggest chest from the mod. A Netherite Barrel also counts.[2]
Controller, tool and link
a quest in "Basic Storage" introduces the Storage Controller, which lets several storages act like one big multiblock. It can act as the in/out point for mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics. Storages connect by sitting next to the controller or next to storages already connected, up to 14 blocks away in all directions.[2]
After that come a quest in "Basic Storage" and a quest in "Basic Storage". The Storage Tool binds storages to the controller wirelessly. The Storage Link connects storages that aren't attached to the controller. Both keep the same 14 block range.[2]
For upgrades, a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base. It points you to the Sophisticated Backpacks upgrades, which work about the same. The other 41 quests in this chapter are in the quest book.[2]
How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?
4 parts
Welcome to Sophisticated Storage! In this pack the mod's quests sit in the Basic Storage chapter (group Storage, chapter 30 of 70 in the quest book). The recipes below are marked as changed by the pack, so use the recipe blocks here rather than what you remember from other packs.[2][3]
Step 1: Make a Sophisticated chest or barrel
Start with the quest "Sophisticated Storage" quest. It tells you these chests and barrels behave like the vanilla ones, but they have a slot for a Storage Upgrade and can be upgraded with metals to hold more. Your starter is the Chest or the Barrel.[2]

Step 2: Climb the metal tiers
The quest book lays the tiers out in order: "Copper Chest" quest, then "Iron Chest" quest, "Gold Chest" quest, "Diamond Chest" quest and finally "Netherite Chest" quest, which the book calls the biggest chest from the mod. The Copper step is optional for reaching Iron, but it can save you some iron.[2]

Copper is the first upgrade from the basic chest in this pack.
Here is what each chest tier gives you in this pack. These values come from the server config and match the mod defaults.[4]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.CopperChest.inventorySlotCount, server.CopperChest.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots (server.IronChest.inventorySlotCount, server.IronChest.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots (server.GoldChest.inventorySlotCount, server.GoldChest.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots and 4 upgrade slots (server.DiamondChest.inventorySlotCount, server.DiamondChest.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
Step 3: Get the Upgrade Base
The Upgrade Base has its own quest, a quest in "Basic Storage". It says you need the base to make the Sophisticated Storage versions of the upgrades, which work about the same as the Sophisticated Backpacks ones. The backpack upgrades sit in the same chapter, so you can plan your upgrade slots early.[2]
Step 4: Link everything with a controller
Once you have a few chests, the Storage Controller (a quest in "Basic Storage") lets them act as one big storage. Place storages next to the controller, or next to ones already connected to it. The quest text says this works up to 14 blocks away, while the config option server.controllerRange is set to 15 in this pack.[2][4]

After that comes the Storage Link (a quest in "Basic Storage"), which connects a separate group of storages without clicking each one.[2]

How does Sophisticated Storage work?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide
Sophisticated Storage is built around a few ideas: tiered barrels, chests and shulker boxes, upgrades that go in the storage itself, and a multiblock system that lets pipes and hoppers talk to a whole group of storages at once. Every recipe I could check for the mod in this pack is marked as changed by the pack, so don't trust the default recipes you remember from other modpacks.[5][6]
Storage multiblocks and automation
The Storage Controller is the heart of a multiblock. Its tooltip says it lets you deposit items into, and pipe items to and from, a connected multiblock of storages. So instead of piping into every single barrel, you hook up the controller and treat the whole group as one.[5]
A few small blocks help you shape and automate the multiblock:[5]
- Storage Connector: bridges gaps between storage blocks in a storage multiblock, so you can keep things connected even when the storages aren't touching.[5]
- Storage Input: lets you pipe items into the multiblock. Its tooltip says it is optimized for low TPS impact.[5]
- Storage Output: lets you pipe items out of the multiblock.[5]
- Storage I/O: does both, piping items to and from the multiblock through one block.[5]
- Storage Link: connects a separate multiblock of storages to a controller. You use the Storage Tool to link it to the controller.[5]
Tiers and upgrading storage
Storage blocks come in tiers, and the language file lists barrels, chests and shulker boxes in iron, gold, diamond and netherite versions, plus copper versions of all three. Tier upgrades are items you apply to an existing storage. If you try to upgrade without enough of them, the game tells you that upgrading requires a certain number of the upgrade item.[5]
In this pack the upgrade chain is recipe-driven. The Basic Tier Upgrade itself has a pack-changed recipe:[6]
Crafting Shaped

The Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade is made from the Basic to Gold tier upgrade plus a diamond, and the Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade is a shapeless recipe built on the diamond one plus a netherite ingot. So the higher upgrades are steps on the same ladder, not separate crafts from scratch.[6]

You can also upgrade the storage blocks directly. The Copper Barrel recipe takes a plain barrel and a copper ingot, and the limited netherite barrel takes the limited diamond barrel and a netherite ingot. Chests work in a similar way: the copper chest recipe takes a chest, with copper ingots and copper blocks.[6]

Barrels, limited barrels and shulker boxes
The basic Barrel has a pack-changed recipe that accepts any planks and any wooden slab, plus a lever. There are also wood-specific versions, such as the acacia one, which also use a lever.[6]
Limited barrels come in four levels (I to IV) for each material, including the Limited Diamond Barrel 1. Their tooltip shows a slot count and a base stack size multiplier. The exact numbers aren't in the sources I have, so check the tooltip in game.[5]
For shulker boxes, the pack lets you turn a vanilla shulker box into a Shulker Box with a lever. The Copper Shulker Box is made from a shulker shell and a copper chest.[6]

Upgrades inside a storage
Storages have upgrade slots, and the upgrade screens show several automation options. There are Hopper and Advanced Hopper settings, and I/O mode buttons named Disabled, Off, Pull, Push, and Push & Pull. The sources only list these button names, so open the screen in game to see how they apply to each side.[5]
Some upgrades are limited to one per storage. The game warns you if there is already a Compacting Upgrade or a Compression Upgrade in another upgrade slot. The Advanced Compacting Upgrade compacts items into their compressed variants, covering both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes, with more filtering options.[5]
The Advanced Alchemy Upgrade automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets, and has extra effect filtering options. In this pack it is an upgrade of the Alchemy Upgrade, and both recipes were changed by the pack.[5][6]

Breaking storages safely
The mod has a few safety checks when you break a full storage. If breaking it would drop too many item entities, the game refuses and suggests either another option or breaking it while sneaking to skip the check. A storage with an Infinity Upgrade can only be broken by admins.[5]
The mod also has a config option that makes all storages drop as packed items without needing packing tape. The game shows a message when that option is on. This pack has no mod config file in my sources, so I can't tell you whether it is switched on here.[5]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?
5 parts
Sophisticated Storage is all about climbing a metal ladder with your chests and barrels. The pack's quest book walks you up it in the Basic Storage chapter (group Storage, chapter 30 of 70). It starts at "Sophisticated Storage" quest, which tells you these chests behave like a vanilla Chest or Barrel, but have a slot for a Storage Upgrade.[2]
The tier ladder
Every tier quest accepts either the chest or the barrel version, so pick whichever you like. The order in the quest book is:[2]
- Start with the plain Chest or Barrel from "Sophisticated Storage" quest.[2][3]
- "Copper Chest" quest asks for the Copper Chest or Copper Barrel. The quest says it isn't needed to make an Iron Chest, but it can save you some iron.[2]
- "Iron Chest" quest asks for the Iron Chest or Iron Barrel. It comes after both the Sophisticated Storage quest and the Copper Chest quest.[2]
- "Gold Chest" quest asks for the Gold Chest or Gold Barrel, after the Iron Chest.[2]
- "Diamond Chest" quest asks for the Diamond Chest or Diamond Barrel, after the Gold Chest.[2]
- "Netherite Chest" quest asks for the Netherite Chest or Netherite Barrel, after the Diamond Chest. The quest calls it the biggest of the chests from Sophisticated Storage.[2]

Linking your storage together
After "Sophisticated Storage" quest, the book branches to the Storage Controller in a quest in "Basic Storage". It lets several storages act like one big multiblock. You connect storages by placing them next to the controller or next to storages already connected to it, up to 14 blocks away in all directions. It can also act as an in/out point for mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics.[2]

Next comes a quest in "Basic Storage" for the Storage Tool. Right click the controller to bind it, then right click storages to link them wirelessly, with the same 14 block range. a quest in "Basic Storage" follows both of them. The Storage Link connects storages that aren't touching the controller or anything connected to it, so you don't have to right click each one.[2]
In the pack you can also get Storage Links straight from a controller:[3]

Upgrades
a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base. The quest sends you to the Sophisticated Backpack upgrades and says the storage equivalents work about the same. The Advanced versions are crafted from their basic upgrade, for example:[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?
4 parts
Sophisticated Storage connects to a few other mods in this pack. The recipes link it to Sophisticated Backpacks, Chipped and Sawmill, and the storage boats and minecarts build on vanilla chest boats and chest minecarts. The quest book also mentions Applied Energistics and Integrated Dynamics for bigger storage networks.[2][3]
Sophisticated Backpacks
Upgrades can be converted between Sophisticated Storage and Sophisticated Backpacks in both directions, including the Alchemy Upgrade and advanced upgrades such as the Advanced Magnet Upgrade, Advanced Void Upgrade and Advanced Filter Upgrade. There are 40 recipes in each direction, and the ones written out in the recipe dump are changed by the pack. The magnet upgrade is shown below as an example.[3]

It tells you to look at the Sophisticated Backpack upgrades, and that you will need to make the Sophisticated Storage equivalent, which functions about the same. Sophisticated Backpacks has its own quest, "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest, in the same chapter.[2]
Chipped and Sawmill
Several Chipped workstations have a matching storage upgrade: the Alchemy Bench, Botanist Workbench, Carpenters Table, Glassblower, Loom Table, Mason Table and Tinkering Table. The pack changed these recipes, and they follow the same pattern. The Glassblower is shown here as an example.[3]

Vanilla chest boats and minecarts
Sophisticated Storage adds its own transport with chests: the Storage Boat and the Storage Minecart. They start from the vanilla chest boats, the chest raft and the Chest Minecart, and the recipes below show how. These are listed as plain mod recipes, not ones changed by the pack.[3]

Network mods in the quest book
The a quest in "Basic Storage" quest says the Storage Controller can be combined with mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics. It acts as an in/out point for every storage attached to it, and storages connect up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions. The a quest in "Basic Storage" quest and the a quest in "Basic Storage" quest cover wireless linking, with the same 14 block range.[2]
Which All the Mons quests use Sophisticated Storage?
5 parts
Sophisticated Storage has its own little corner of the quest book: the "Basic Storage" chapter, in the Storage group (chapter 30 of 70). That chapter also covers other storage mods like Functional Storage and Sophisticated Backpacks, so here I'll stick to the Sophisticated Storage quests.[2]
Where it starts
Everything hangs off the "Sophisticated Storage" quest quest. It explains that you can upgrade Chests and Barrels with metals to increase their storage, and that you can add upgrades to extend what they do. These storages work just like a vanilla Chest or Barrel, but they have a slot for a Storage Upgrade.[2]
The chest and barrel tiers
Each tier quest accepts either the chest or the barrel version, so pick whichever you prefer. They run in a line, each one unlocked after the previous:[2]
- "Copper Chest" quest: asks for a Copper Chest or Copper Barrel. The quest says you don't need it to make an Iron Chest, but it can save you some iron.[2]
- "Iron Chest" quest: asks for an Iron Chest or Iron Barrel. It comes after the intro quest and the Copper Chest quest.[2]
- "Gold Chest" quest: asks for a Gold Chest or Gold Barrel.[2]
- "Diamond Chest" quest: asks for a Diamond Chest or Diamond Barrel.[2]
- "Netherite Chest" quest: asks for a Netherite Chest or Netherite Barrel. The quest calls it the biggest of the chests from Sophisticated Storage.[2]
Controller, tool and link
Branching off the intro quest is a quest in "Basic Storage", which asks for the Storage Controller. It lets you treat multiple storages as one big multiblock. Place storages next to the controller, or next to others already connected to it, and this works up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions. The quest also says it can act as an in/out point for mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics.[2]
Two quests follow it. a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Storage Tool: right click the controller to bind it, then right click storages to link them wirelessly, with the same 14 block range. After that, a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Storage Link, which connects storages that aren't attached to a controller or to anything connected to it, again with 14 blocks of range.[2]
Upgrade Base
The last quest is a quest in "Basic Storage", asking for the Upgrade Base. It is also unlocked by the intro quest. To keep the chapter from filling up with upgrades, it points you to the Sophisticated Backpacks upgrade quests instead. You'll need to craft the Sophisticated Storage equivalents, but the quest says they function about the same.[2]
A mention in the Create chapter
Outside the Storage group, the Stock Link quest in the Create chapter (Tech group, chapter 45 of 70) compares Create's way of combining inventories to AE2 and Sophisticated Storage. It sits after the Cardboard Packages quest. The Create chapter has 19 quests whose text isn't covered here, so check the quest book for those.[7]
Which Sophisticated Storage config options matter?
4 parts
Good news first: every option in this pack's server config that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default. The pack hasn't rebalanced any of them, so what follows is what you get out of the box. It all lives in the server config file, so on a server everyone shares the same values.[4]
Storage size and upgrade slots
Chests, barrels and shulker boxes of the same material share the same numbers. Here is how each tier is set:[4]
- Wood: 27 inventory slots (server.WoodChest.inventorySlotCount) and 1 upgrade slot (server.WoodChest.upgradeSlotCount). The plain shulker box matches at 27 (server.ShulkerBox.inventorySlotCount) and 1 (server.ShulkerBox.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots (server.CopperChest.inventorySlotCount) and 1 upgrade slot (server.CopperChest.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots (server.IronChest.inventorySlotCount) and 2 upgrade slots (server.IronChest.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots (server.GoldChest.inventorySlotCount) and 3 upgrade slots (server.GoldChest.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots (server.DiamondChest.inventorySlotCount) and 4 upgrade slots (server.DiamondChest.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Netherite: 132 inventory slots (server.NetheriteChest.inventorySlotCount) and 5 upgrade slots (server.NetheriteChest.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
Limited barrels
Limited barrels work differently: each tier uses a base slot limit multiplier. Plain Limited Barrels are set like this:[4]
- Tier I: multiplier of 32 (server.LimitedBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier).[4]
- Tier II: multiplier of 16 (server.LimitedBarrelII.baseSlotLimitMultiplier).[4]
- Tier III: multiplier of 10 (server.LimitedBarrelIII.baseSlotLimitMultiplier).[4]
- Tier IV: multiplier of 8 (server.LimitedBarrelIV.baseSlotLimitMultiplier).[4]
- The metal versions start higher, for example Limited Netherite Barrel I at 160 (server.LimitedNetheriteBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier).[4]
Upgrade behaviour
- Hopper upgrade: moves a stack size of 1 per transfer (server.hopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize), every 8 ticks (server.hopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks).[4]
- Advanced hopper upgrade: moves up to 4 per transfer (server.advancedHopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize), every 2 ticks (server.advancedHopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks).[4]
- Magnet upgrade: picks up items within 3 blocks of the storage (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[4]
- Advanced magnet upgrade: reaches 5 blocks (server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[4]
- Smelting upgrade: speed (server.smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier) and fuel efficiency (server.smeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier) multipliers are both 1, which matches a vanilla furnace. The smoking, blasting and auto versions are set the same way.[4]
- Compression upgrade: uses at most 5 slots (server.compressionUpgrade.maxNumberOfSlots).[4]
- Controller range: 15 blocks (server.controllerRange), the maximum distance at which the controller connects storage blocks.[4]
Limits and safety options
server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many of certain upgrades one storage block can hold. In this pack, chests, barrels and shulker boxes allow 2 stack upgrades, 1 jukebox upgrade and 1 furnace upgrade. Limited barrels list only the jukebox and furnace caps, each 1.[4]
server.tooManyItemEntityDrops is set to 200. If breaking a chest or barrel would drop more item entities than that, the break is cancelled unless you hold shift, and a message tells you to use packing tape instead.[4]
server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems lists items that won't stack in storage even with a stack upgrade. It includes the bundle, the Immersive Engineering toolbox, the Supplementaries quiver and every colour of shulker box.[4]
No items are blocked from shulker boxes (server.shulkerBoxDisallowedItems.disallowedItems is empty), and server.shulkerBoxDisallowedItems.containerItemsDisallowed is false. The void upgrade (server.voidUpgrade.voidAlwaysEnabled) and advanced void upgrade (server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAlwaysEnabled) both have voiding always enabled, and server.limitedBarrelCountDyeingEnabled is true, so limited barrel counts can be dyed.[4]
