What is IceAndFire Community Edition?

3 parts

Ice and Fire Community Edition is an unofficial fork of the original Ice and Fire mod. It brings optimizations, new content and rewrites. It keeps everything from the original except the myrmex series, and it adds netherite-related content. The pack has included it since version 4.0 or earlier.[1][2]

The pack's quest chapter calls dragons the most dangerous and important monsters in the mod. It says you will need to find, kill and even tame some of them to get some of the best loot in the pack.[3]

Where the quest book puts it

The pack gives the mod its own chapter, called "Ice and Fire". The chapter opens with the "Rotten Egg" quest quest, followed by "Dragons and their Stages" quest, and the dragon quests branch from that one. The Ice Dragon quest "Stage 4-5 Ice Dragon" quest and the Lightning Dragon quest "Stage 4-5 Lightning Dragon" quest both come after it. The chain quest comes after the "Taming Ice and Fire Mobs" quest.[3]

Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses this mod is not shown by the sources here. Check the pack's quest book to see how the Ice and Fire chapter connects to the rest of the quests.

Dragons and how they scale

A dragon's element decides which biome it spawns in. Dragons come in stages 1 through 5, and the stage sets their health, damage, drops and spawns. Stages 1-3 spawn in roosts, while stages 4 and 5 spawn in caves. Only stages 4 and 5 drop eggs. A good first step is to find deceased dragons and collect their Dragon Bone.[3]

A stage 4 or 5 dragon only might drop an egg. The quests say the dragon must be female, and that you must not have used empty bottles on it.[3]

Other things to try

  • Chickens will sometimes lay a Rotten Egg. Throw it to hatch a baby cockatrice, which is tamed automatically and needs time to grow up.[3]
  • The Chain Line ties to mobs, dragons included, so you can move them or restrain them against a wall. It is a much stronger alternative to a lead.[3]
  • The Bestiary is the mod's in-game guide, and it starts empty. Put it and some Manuscripts into the Bestiary Lectern and pick the creature you want to learn about. The Manuscripts are used up and the pages are added to your guide.[3]
Watch out: This fork must not directly replace the original mod, or your saves will be corrupted. Do not report issues to the original mod either.[1]
Tip: The config only saves the data it needs, so you may not find a file. You can change it from the client GUI through mod menu, which requires server operator permission. Biome spawns are changed with biome tags in datapacks.[1]

How do you get started with IceAndFire Community Edition?

5 parts

Ice and Fire is all about monsters, and the big prize is dragons. You don't need to fight anything yet, though. Start with the in-game guide, then work toward taming and dragon gear. Here's the order I'd go in.[3]

Step one: make your Bestiary and Lectern

The quest "In game Guide" quest points you at the Bestiary and the Bestiary Lectern. The Bestiary is the mod's guide book, and it starts out empty. You put it into the Lectern together with Manuscript items, pick a creature, and the manuscripts get used up to add pages. The mod's advancements say manuscripts are found in dungeons, so keep an eye out for them while exploring.[3][4]

Step two: grab a free pet

Chickens will sometimes lay a Rotten Egg. Throw it and a baby cockatrice hatches that is tamed automatically. It will need time to grow up. It's an easy first taste of the mod ("Rotten Egg" quest).[3]

Step three: learn how dragons work

The quest "Dragons and their Stages" quest asks for Dragon Bone. It suggests you look for already-dead dragons first. Dragons come in stages 1 through 5. Stages 1-3 spawn in roosts, stages 4 and 5 spawn in caves, and only 4 and 5 drop eggs. A dragon's element decides which biome it spawns in.[3]

After a kill, the corpse can be stripped with an empty hand for scales, flesh and heart. If you use an empty bottle instead, you get dragon blood. The skeleton left behind gives you bones and the skull the same way.[3]

Watch out: If you want an egg, don't use bottles on the corpse. The quests say you only get a chance at an egg from a female stage 4 or 5 dragon that you didn't use bottles on.[3]

Step four: craft your dragon-handling tools

Fire dragons can fly after you, and the quests recommend something like Chain Line to stop them escaping. Chain Links tie to mobs, including dragons, and won't break when attached to a wall (a quest in "Ice and Fire"). Make sure the wall is one a dragon can't break.[3]

The mod's advancements describe the other basics. Dragon Meal rapidly grows baby dragons, the Dragon Command Staff controls your dragons, the Dragon Bone Flute stops runaway dragons, and the Dragon Horn stores dragons.[4][5]

Step five: aim for dragonsteel

The mod's advancements describe a dragonsteel ingot as made from dragon blood and iron. The pack changed the recipes for the fire, ice and lightning ingots, so use the recipe below for the in-pack version. Dragonsteel is made in a dragon forge, and the forge needs the correct type of dragon to power it.[4][5]

How does IceAndFire Community Edition work?

4 parts

Ice and Fire doesn't have the usual power, fluid or pipe systems you may know from tech mods. Its one real machine is the dragon forge, and the thing that drives it is a living dragon. The sources only cover the forge in a few short lines, so this section stays brief and sticks to what they confirm.[4]

The dragon forge

The forge is a multiblock used to make dragon steel. The mod's built-in Ponder tutorial says the core is the heart of the forge and that all items go in there.[4]

  • A dragon powers the forge. The tutorial says the dragon needs to see the core block.[4]
  • The dragon has to be the correct type for the forge. The recipe viewer has a separate Lightning Dragon Forge category, so the fire, ice and lightning forges look like separate setups.[4]
  • To open the forge, click the blocks at the center of each face.[4]

There are two advancements for the building blocks, one for crafting a dragon forge brick and one for crafting a dragon forge core. A third covers the result: making a dragonsteel ingot from dragon blood and iron.[4]

Tip: If the Ponder mod is in your game, the mod has a Dragon Forge Structure Tutorial. It is listed as supported on Minecraft 1.21 and up. Use it to check the exact layout instead of guessing.[1]

The mod also lists ProjectE support, covering EMC and dragon forge recipe calculation.[1]

Pixie dust and ambrosia

The closest thing to an automation loop in the sources is pixie dust. An advancement tells you to trap a pixie in a jar to farm the dust. You can turn that dust into Ambrosia with a simple shapeless craft.[4][5]

Pack settings that affect dragons

These are the values the pack sets in the common config. Dragon block griefing (dragon.griefing) is true, and griefing by tamed dragons (dragon.tamedGriefing) is false. Dragon max health (dragon.maxHealth) is 1,500. The dragon sleep option (dragon.sleep) is true.[6]

Dragonsteel gear is tuned in the same file. Base durability (armors.dragonSteelBaseDurability) is 8,000 and base damage (armors.dragonSteelBaseDamage) is 45. The elemental tool abilities for fire, ice and lightning are all enabled.[6]

How do you progress through IceAndFire Community Edition?

5 parts

Ice and Fire has its own quest chapter in the pack. It starts with the in-game guide, moves to dragons, and branches into monster-themed gear. You'll work through it in roughly three tiers: learn the basics, take on dragons and the DragonForge, then collect the gear from the other mobs.[3]

Tier 1: Get your guide

The first step is the "In game Guide" quest quest. You need the Bestiary and the Bestiary Lectern. The Bestiary starts out empty. Put it in the lectern together with Manuscript and pick a monster to learn about. That uses up the manuscripts and adds pages to your guide.[3]

Tier 2: Dragons

"Dragons and their Stages" quest is the gateway to everything dragon-related, and its task is a Dragon Bone. Dragons come in Stages 1 to 5. Stages 1-3 spawn in roosts, while Stages 4 and 5 spawn in caves. Only Stage 4 and 5 dragons drop eggs, and the egg must come from a female you didn't use bottles on. The quest text also explains what each stage can do. Stage 1 can only bite, Stage 2 adds elemental breath, and Stage 3 has the full set of attacks.[3]

Each element has two quests. The Stage 1-3 quests ("Stage 1-3 Fire Dragon" quest, "Stage 1-3 Ice Dragon" quest, "Stage 1-3 Lightning Dragon" quest) ask you to harvest dragon blood from a corpse with an empty bottle. The Stage 4-5 quests ("Stage 4-5 Fire Dragon" quest, "Stage 4-5 Ice Dragon" quest, "Stage 4-5 Lightning Dragon" quest) ask for an egg of the matching element.[3]

Watch out: Stage 4 and 5 fights are the hard ones. The quests warn that fire dragons need gear and potions that stop burning, and that lightning dragons hit hardest, so go in with lots of armor and resistance.[3]

The DragonForge and dragonsteel

The Fire DragonForge quest ("Fire DragonForge" quest) unlocks after the egg quest "Cooking your Egg". The Lightning DragonForge quest ("Lightning DragonForge" quest) unlocks after "Leave your Egg in the Rain". The forge is a 3x3x3 multiblock built from forge bricks, Block of Dragon Bones corners, a core and an aperture. It needs heat from a dragon, either a tamed one nearby or a wild one chained up next to it. The Ice DragonForge has its own quest too ("Ice DragonForge" quest).[3]

How does IceAndFire Community Edition work with other mods?

5 parts

Ice and Fire doesn't live in a bubble in this pack. The recipe data shows it hooked into Farmer's Delight, Productive Bees, Mekanism, Productive Trees, All The Ores and some KubeJS items. Here's every connection I can confirm, and whether it comes from the mod itself or from the pack.[5]

Farmer's Delight: dragon fried rice

Farmer's Delight has a cooking recipe for each dragon type, giving you Fried Rice with Fire Dragon Flesh, Fried Rice with Ice Dragon Flesh and Fried Rice with Lightning Dragon Flesh. These are listed as regular mod recipes, so the pack hasn't touched them.[5]

Productive Bees: dragon blood and dragonsteel

This is the biggest crossover, and the pack changed all of it. In the dragonforge, dragon blood combined with a Productive Bees configurable bee gives you the bee back plus Spawn Egg Configurable Bee. There's one recipe each for fire, ice and lightning blood.[5]

The Productive Bees centrifuge also has pack-changed recipes in the Ice and Fire group. The dump lists Honey as the input, and the outputs are a dragonsteel ingot plus the matching dragon blood. For fire that's Fire Dragonsteel Ingot and Fire Dragon Blood. Ice and lightning have their own versions.[5]

All The Ores: nuggets and sapphire

The pack changed several Ice and Fire recipes so they output All The Ores items instead. Smelting or blasting the mod's copper tools and armor, such as the Copper Pickaxe or Copper Helmet, gives you Copper Nugget. The silver gear works the same way and gives Silver Nugget.[5]

Crafting a Sapphire Block back down also gives you Sapphire, so the gem is the same one used across the pack.[5]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use IceAndFire Community Edition?

4 parts

The pack's quest book puts Ice and Fire in one chapter called Ice and Fire. It reads mostly as a monster-by-monster tour: creatures get their own quests, and items from them are what the follow-up quests for weapons, arrows and armor ask for. Several quests list prerequisites such as The Other Desert, Ancient Crimson Forest or Cooking your Egg, so some may stay locked until you have done those.[3]

Start with the guide

"In game Guide" quest asks for the Bestiary and the Bestiary Lectern. According to the quest text, the Bestiary starts empty: you put it and some Manuscripts into the lectern and pick a monster, which uses up the Manuscripts and adds pages to your guide.[3]

Dragons and their stages

"Dragons and their Stages" quest is the dragon hub and asks for a Dragon Bone. Its text says dragons have stages 1 through 5, that stages 1 to 3 spawn in roosts and stages 4 and 5 in caves, and that only 4 and 5 drop eggs. The six stage quests below all list it as their prerequisite.[3]

Per the quest text, an egg may drop only from a female stage 4 or 5 dragon, and only if you didn't use empty bottles on it.[3]

Dragon forges and commanding dragons

"Fire DragonForge" quest (Fire DragonForge, after Cooking your Egg) and "Lightning DragonForge" quest (Lightning DragonForge, after Leave your Egg in the Rain) each ask for a Block of Dragon Bones, a forge brick, an aperture and a core. The quest texts describe each forge as a 3x3x3 multiblock. The fire forge is heated by a fire dragon's breath, and the lightning forge is zapped by a lightning dragon's attacks. According to the texts, tamed or wild dragons can be used.[3]

Tip: The quest text says Chain Links can tie to mobs, including dragons, so you can restrain a wild one next to a forge. Make sure your walls can survive the dragon. That quest is a quest in "Ice and Fire", which asks for the Chain Line.[3]

"Commanding your Dragon" quest lists Cooking your Egg, Ice Bucket Challenge! and Leave your Egg in the Rain as prerequisites. It asks for the Dragon Command Staff, Dragon Horn and Dragon Bone Flute. The quest text describes them as a way to give orders to a tamed dragon, carry it around, and call a flying one down.[3]

Which IceAndFire Community Edition config options matter?

5 parts

Ice and Fire CE keeps its settings in two files in this pack: a common file for gameplay and world generation, and a client file for visual options. Everything below is the value this pack sets.[6][7]

Unverified The sources I have only show the values this pack uses, not the mod's own defaults. I can't say which of these values the pack changed, so treat them all as the pack's settings.

Dragon behaviour and griefing

Dragonsteel gear

The pack sets dragonsteel armor values as follows: helmet armors.dragonsteelHelmetArmor at 17, chestplate armors.dragonsteelChestplateArmor at 22, leggings armors.dragonsteelLeggingsArmor at 19 and boots armors.dragonsteelBootsArmor at 16. Toughness (armors.dragonsteelArmorToughness) is 16 and knockback resistance (armors.dragonsteelArmorKnockbackResistance) is 0.25.[6]

Dragonsteel tools use a base damage (armors.dragonSteelBaseDamage) of 45 and a base durability (armors.dragonSteelBaseDurability) of 8,000. The fire, ice and lightning abilities (tools.dragonFireAbility, tools.dragonIceAbility, tools.dragonLightningAbility) are all enabled.[6]

World generation

Every structure chance in the worldgen group is set to 1. That covers fire, ice and lightning dragon caves and roosts, for example worldgen.generateFireDragonCaveChance, plus the cyclops cave, gorgon temple, hydra cave, mausoleum, graveyard, pixie village and siren island. worldgen.dangerousDistanceLimit is 1,000.[6]

Other mobs

Client options

On the client side, client.customMainMenu is false, so the mod's custom main menu is off. client.dragonAuto3rdPerson is also false. client.siren.shader is true.[7]

What changed in IceAndFire Community Edition between versions?

Ice And Fire Community Edition has been in All the Mods 10 since 4.0 or earlier, and All the Mods 10 8.1 ships a 2.0 beta build of it. The pack changelogs only record which version of the mod the pack moved to, so this is a timeline of version bumps. The exact beta build numbers are in the individual pack changelog entries.[2][8]

  • All the Mods 10 4.0: the mod was added, at a 1.0 beta build.[8]
  • All the Mods 10 4.1: updated from that 1.0 beta build to 1.0.[9]
  • All the Mods 10 4.5: updated from 1.0 to 1.1.[10]
  • All the Mods 10 4.6: updated from 1.1 to 1.1.1.[11]
  • All the Mods 10 4.11: the pack went from 1.1.1 back to 1.1.[12]
  • All the Mods 10 5.5: a big jump from 1.1 to a 2.0 beta build.[13]
  • All the Mods 10 6.2: updated to a newer 2.0 beta build.[14]
  • All the Mods 10 7.0: updated to the next 2.0 beta build.[15]
  • All the Mods 10 7.1: updated to the next 2.0 beta build again, which is the one All the Mods 10 8.1 ships.[2][16]
Tip: The biggest step was in All the Mods 10 5.5, when the mod moved from 1.1 to the 2.0 betas. Because 4.11 also moved back from 1.1.1 to 1.1, check which pack version you started a world on before you update an old one.[12][13]

Unverified The pack changelogs only list version numbers, and no changelogs are stored for the shipped jars. What changed inside the mod in each release, such as new dragons, mobs, items or recipe changes, is not shown by the sources here, and neither is the reason for the rollback.
