What is IceAndFire Community Edition?

1 part

IceAndFire Community Edition is an unofficial, community-maintained fork of the classic Ice and Fire mod. It includes optimizations, rewrites and new content. It keeps everything from the original mod except the myrmex series, and it adds some Netherite-related content on top.[1]

All the Mods 10 4.5 ships version 1.1 of the mod, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been part of the pack since 4.0 or earlier.[2]

This mod is for you if you like exploring and fighting mythical creatures and turning their drops into unique gear. Your handbook is the Bestiary. It introduces itself as a manuscript on designing supernatural tools and a guide to tracking down magical creatures.[3][4]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack gives Ice and Fire its own quest chapter. Some quests have no prerequisites and just ask for simple finds like a Rotten Egg or a Dragon Bone. Another asks you to get the Bestiary together with a Bestiary Lectern. From there, the chapter branches out into the different creatures.[4]

The big dragon projects are the Dragonforges. The fire forge quest asks for 4 Block of Dragon Bones plus a Dragonforge Fire Brick, Dragonforge Fire Aperture and Dragonforge Fire Core. The lightning forge quest asks for 8 bone blocks and 17 Dragonforge Lightning Brick along with its aperture and core.[4]

Watch out: Don't swap this mod in directly for the original Ice and Fire on an existing world. The developers warn that doing so will corrupt your saves.[1]

How do you get started with IceAndFire Community Edition?

4 parts

IceAndFire Community Edition is a community fork of the original Ice and Fire mod. It adds optimizations, new content and rewrites, and it includes everything from the original mod except the myrmex series. This pack gives it its own quest chapter, and that chapter is a good map for your first steps.[1][4]

Step 1: Get your Bestiary and Lectern

Your first goal is to find Manuscript pages, which turn up in dungeons. The mod's advancement says you use 3 manuscripts to create a Bestiary. The Bestiary is your guide to magical creatures and the gear you can make from them, so read it before you go hunting dragons.[3][5][6]

Manuscripts also go into the Bestiary Lectern, which the mod describes as the way to learn more about the world of Ice and Fire. The quest a quest in "?" asks for both the Bestiary and the Lectern, so craft them together.[4][5][6]

Step 2: Craft some Chain Line

Chain Line is a quick early craft, and the quest a quest in "?" asks for it. You'll want it because all three Death Worm Gauntlet recipes use it. When you head out after death worms for their chitin and tongue, the mod's own tip is that they love to eat TNT.[4][5][6]

Step 3: Make friends with pixies

Pixies are a fun early target. You can befriend one by dropping cake near it, or trap one in a Jar to farm its dust. The quest chapter has a quest in "?" for Pixie Dust, and the Jar quest a quest in "?" and the Pixie Wand quest a quest in "?" both come after it.[4][5]

Step 4: Dragon bones and dragon tools

Dragon Bone has its own quest, a quest in "?", and the Rotten Egg quest a quest in "?" sits alongside it. Neither quest lists a prerequisite. Dragon Bone is a key material: it goes into the Dragon Horn, the Dragon Bone Flute and the Block of Dragon Bones.[4][6]

How does IceAndFire Community Edition work?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 7.3 guide

The big multiblock in this mod doesn't run on generators or cables. The dragon forge is powered by an actual dragon, and it's how you turn dragon materials into dragonsteel. This section covers how the forge works, what dragonsteel gives you in this pack, how to farm pixie dust, and the tools you use to keep your dragons under control.[7]

The Dragon Forge

The dragon forge exists to make dragonsteel. It is built from dragon forge bricks around a dragon forge core, and both have their own advancements, so you'll know when you've crafted the right parts.[7]

  1. The core is the heart of the forge. All the items you want to process go in there.[7]
  2. The dragon needs line of sight to a specific block of the structure to power the forge, so position your dragon where it can see that block.[7]
  3. You need the right type of dragon. A dragon of the wrong type won't power the forge.[7]
  4. To open the forge's interface, click the block at the center of any face of the structure.[7]

The forge types are separate recipe categories. For example, EMI has a category called Lightning Dragon Forge. The mod supports both EMI and JEI for viewing recipes, so check the recipe viewer to see which forge and dragon a recipe needs before you start building.[1][7]

Tip: If you're stuck on the layout, the mod includes a Ponder tutorial for the dragon forge structure on MC 1.21+. Its first scene is titled Use dragon to power dragon forge, and it walks through the core, the block the dragon must see, and how to open the forge.[1][7]

Unverified The sources don't give the full block-by-block layout of the forge, and they don't say whether hoppers, pipes or other automation can insert items into or extract them from the forge core. Test it in a creative world before planning an automated setup.

Dragonsteel

A dragonsteel ingot is made from dragon blood and iron, and you can then craft dragonsteel weapons from it. In this pack, dragons are set to drop blood, and the heart and skull drops are enabled too, so killing a dragon gets you the raw material.[7][8]

Dragonsteel stats are set in the pack's common config. The base durability is 8,000, the base damage is 45, armor toughness is 16, knockback resistance is 0.25 and enchantability is 130.[8]

  • Dragonsteel helmet: 17 armor, 2,760 durability.[8]
  • Dragonsteel chestplate: 22 armor, 4,560 durability.[8]
  • Dragonsteel leggings: 19 armor, 4,400 durability.[8]
  • Dragonsteel boots: 16 armor, 4,080 durability.[8]

Dragon tools keep their elemental effects in this pack. The fire, ice and lightning ability options, tools.iceandfire.tools.dragonFireAbility, tools.iceandfire.tools.dragonIceAbility and tools.iceandfire.tools.dragonLightningAbility, are all enabled. tools.iceandfire.tools.dragonsteelFireDuration is set to 15, tools.iceandfire.tools.dragonBloodFireDuration to 5 and tools.iceandfire.tools.dragonBloodFrozenDuration to 100.[8]

Farming Pixie Dust

To befriend a pixie, drop cake near it. Once you've got one, trap it in a jar and it becomes a farm for Pixie Dust. Keep an eye on your inventory around wild pixies, because pixie.iceandfire.pixie.stealItems is enabled in this pack.[7][8]

One use for the dust is Ambrosia:[9]

AmbrosiaMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: iceandfire:ambrosia

Keeping Your Dragons in Line

Dragons can break blocks in this pack, because dragon.iceandfire.dragon.griefing is on. dragon.iceandfire.dragon.tamedGriefing is off, though, so your own tamed dragons shouldn't wreck your base. The block-breaking cooldown is set to 5 and the drop chance for broken blocks is 0.1.[8]

A few other pack values are useful when you're raising dragons. dragon.iceandfire.dragon.eggBornTime is 7,200, dragon.iceandfire.dragon.hungerTickRate is 3,000 and dragon.iceandfire.dragon.maxTamedDragonAge is 128.[8]

Dragonscale Armor

Armor crafted from dragonscales gives you increased protection from dragon breath attacks, which makes it a great set to wear while you're getting a forge running. There's a set for each scale color, for example blue:[7][9]

Learning In-Game

For more detail while you play, collect 3 manuscripts from dungeons to create a bestiary, then craft a Bestiary Lectern to learn more about the creatures of Ice and Fire.[7]

How do you progress through IceAndFire Community Edition?

4 parts

The Ice and Fire quest chapter in this pack isn't one straight line. It's a web: a few starter quests, a dragon track that climbs from eggs to dragonforges to dragonsteel, and a lot of side branches where you hunt a specific creature and turn its drops into gear. Here's how it all fits together.[4]

Getting started

Two of the first things the chapter asks you to collect are a Rotten Egg in a quest in "?" and a Dragon Bone in a quest in "?". Grab the dragon bones whenever you see them, because the forge quests later want them in block form.[4]

a quest in "?" asks for a Bestiary and a Bestiary Lectern. The in-game guide describes the Bestiary as a manuscript full of designs for supernatural tools and tips for tracking down magical creatures, made for anyone who wants to explore these mysteries. It's worth crafting early.[3][4]

Dragon eggs

There are three egg quests. Each one accepts any egg from its own group of four colours, so you only need one egg per quest.[4]

The dragonforge tier

This is the core of the dragon track. There's a fire, an ice and a lightning dragonforge, and each one has its own build quest followed by a dragonsteel ingot quest.[4]

  1. Build a forge. a quest in "?" (fire) asks for 4 Block of Dragon Bones, a Dragonforge Fire Brick, a Dragonforge Fire Aperture and a Dragonforge Fire Core.[4]
  2. The ice forge quest a quest in "?" asks for 8 bone blocks, 17 Dragonforge Ice Brick, a Dragonforge Ice Aperture and a Dragonforge Ice Core. The lightning forge quest a quest in "?" asks for the same amounts using the lightning versions.[4]
  3. Make dragon blood in the forge. a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?" ask for Fire Dragon Blood, Ice Dragon Blood and Lightning Dragon Blood.[4][6]
  4. Forge dragonsteel. a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?" ask for Fire Dragonsteel Ingot, Ice Dragonsteel Ingot and Lightning Dragonsteel Ingot. Each one unlocks after its matching forge quest.[4]

How does IceAndFire Community Edition work with other mods?

5 parts

Ice and Fire doesn't live in a bubble in this pack. Some of its connections ship with the mod itself, and the pack adds more of its own. Here's what you can do with dragon loot outside the Dragonforge, and how other mods' materials feed back into Ice and Fire.[6]

Dragonsteel bees

If you run bees, this is the big one. The Dragonforge has fire, ice and lightning dragonsteel bee recipes that take a Productive Bees configurable bee and give you back a configurable bee plus a Spawn Egg Configurable Bee. On the Productive Bees side, centrifuge recipes produce Fire Dragonsteel Ingot, Ice Dragonsteel Ingot and Lightning Dragonsteel Ingot, plus the matching dragon blood. Both sets are mod recipes, not pack additions.[6]

Centrifuge (productivebees)

Ice and lightning versions work the same way.

Tip: The quest chapter asks you for dragonsteel in a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?", and for dragon blood in a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". The centrifuge recipes output both dragonsteel ingots and dragon blood.[4][6]

Dragon cooking with Farmer's Delight

Dragon meat isn't just for taming. Farmer's Delight cooking recipes turn it into Fried Rice with Fire Dragon Flesh, Fried Rice with Ice Dragon Flesh and Fried Rice with Lightning Dragon Flesh.[6]

Cooking (farmersdelight)

Recipe id: iceandfire:delight/cooked_rice_with_fire_dragon_meat

Recycling copper and silver gear

The pack changed Ice and Fire's recycling recipes. Smelting or blasting its copper and silver armor and tools now gives you Copper Nugget and Silver Nugget from All the Ores. The pack also changed Sapphire Block so it crafts back into Sapphire. That means your Ice and Fire metals stay compatible with the rest of the pack's ore processing.[6]

Dragon Bone in the pack's custom eyes

Dreadwood and the Sawmill

The pack adds sawing recipes so you can process Dreadwood Log into Dreadwood Planks in both Mekanism's sawing and the Productive Trees sawmill.[6]

Dreadwood Planks, SawdustAdded by the pack

Sawing (mekanism)

Recipe id: allthemods:mekanism/sawing/iceandfire/dreadwood_planks

The pack's Sawmill woodcutting recipes also accept Dreadwood Logs for other mods' wooden items, such as Wood Casing, Wooden AIOT, Wooden Fillet Knife, Cutting Board, and Domum Ornamentum's Standing Barrel and Laying Barrel.[6]

It works the other way too. The Sawmill turns logs and wood from Productive Trees, Biomes We've Gone, Regions Unexplored, Twilight Forest, the Undergarden and Eternal Starlight into Earplugs. Examples include Canopy Tree Log, Redwood Log and Grongle Log, so whatever modded wood you have lying around can become a pair.[6]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use IceAndFire Community Edition?

4 parts

This mod gets its own quest chapter in the pack. None of its quests have titles, so this section groups them by what they ask you to bring in. Nearly all of them are item hand-ins: get the creature's drop or craft its gear, then turn it in.[4]

First steps

Dragons

Three separate quests ask for a dragon egg, and any egg from the listed group counts. a quest in "?" takes a red, green, bronze or gray egg. a quest in "?" takes a blue, white, sapphire or silver egg. a quest in "?" takes an electric, amethyst, copper or black egg.[4]

Each dragon type also has a blood quest: a quest in "?" for Fire Dragon Blood, a quest in "?" for Ice Dragon Blood and a quest in "?" for Lightning Dragon Blood. Each of these also has a second item task that the quest data doesn't identify.[4]

The dragonforge quests are the big builds. Each forge quest unlocks a matching dragonsteel ingot quest once you finish it.[4]

  1. Fire: a quest in "?" asks for 4 Block of Dragon Bones, a Dragonforge Fire Brick, a Dragonforge Fire Aperture and a Dragonforge Fire Core. It leads to a quest in "?", which asks for a Fire Dragonsteel Ingot.[4]
  2. Ice: a quest in "?" asks for 8 Block of Dragon Bones, 17 Dragonforge Ice Brick, a Dragonforge Ice Aperture and a Dragonforge Ice Core. It leads to a quest in "?", which asks for a Ice Dragonsteel Ingot.[4]
  3. Lightning: a quest in "?" asks for 8 Block of Dragon Bones, 17 Dragonforge Lightning Brick, a Dragonforge Lightning Aperture and a Dragonforge Lightning Core. It leads to a quest in "?", which asks for a Lightning Dragonsteel Ingot.[4]

Two more dragon quests round things out: a quest in "?" wants a Dragon Command Staff, a Dragon Horn and a Dragon Bone Flute, while a quest in "?" asks for Dragon Meal. Both sit behind the same set of three prerequisite quests.[4]

Sea creatures

Other beasts

Unverified Many of these quests depend on prerequisite quests that aren't covered here, so the exact unlock order across the whole chapter can't be confirmed. The extra unnamed item tasks in the dragon blood and sea serpent fang quests also can't be confirmed.

Which IceAndFire Community Edition config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 7.3 guide

Ice and Fire has a big config, but only a handful of options really change how your world plays. Below are the ones worth knowing, with the exact values this pack uses. Most of them live in the common config file, and a few visual ones are in the client config.[8][10]

Dragons

Other griefing and nuisance mobs

World generation

Every structure chance in the worldgen section is set to 1 in this pack, including worldgen.iceandfire.worldgen.generateFireDragonCaveChance, worldgen.iceandfire.worldgen.generateIceDragonRoostChance, worldgen.iceandfire.worldgen.generateLightningDragonCaveChance, worldgen.iceandfire.worldgen.generateCyclopsCaveChance and worldgen.iceandfire.worldgen.generatePixieVillageChance. worldgen.iceandfire.worldgen.dangerousDistanceLimit is 1,000.[8]

Gear

Dragonsteel is strong here: armors.iceandfire.armors.dragonsteelChestplateArmor is 22, armors.iceandfire.armors.dragonsteelArmorToughness is 16 and armors.iceandfire.armors.dragonSteelBaseDurability is 8,000. The special weapon abilities, such as tools.iceandfire.tools.dragonFireAbility, tools.iceandfire.tools.dragonIceAbility, tools.iceandfire.tools.dragonLightningAbility and tools.iceandfire.tools.phantasmalBladeAbility, are all true.[8]

Client options

On your side, client.dragonAuto3rdPerson is false, so the camera won't switch to third person for you when you ride a dragon. client.siren.shader is true, and client.customMainMenu is false.[10]

Unverified The sources only show this pack's values, not the mod's defaults, so which of these settings the pack changed from the mod default is unverified.

What changed in IceAndFire Community Edition between versions?

Ice And Fire Community Edition has been in All the Mods 10 since the 4.0 release, and it has been updated twice since then. Here's how the version you're playing got to where it is.[11][12][13]

  1. All the Mods 10 4.0: Ice And Fire Community Edition was added to the pack, starting on version 1.0-beta.9.[11]
  2. All the Mods 10 4.1: the mod moved out of beta, updating from 1.0-beta.9 to the full 1.0 release.[12]
  3. All the Mods 10 4.5: the mod was updated from 1.0 to 1.1.[13]

So if you're on All the Mods 10 4.5, you're running Ice And Fire Community Edition 1.1, shipped as the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]

Unverified The specific gameplay changes, fixes and new content in each of these mod updates can't be confirmed here, because the mod's own changelogs aren't available. If you're coming from an older version of the pack, check the mod's official changelog to see what changed for dragons, mobs and gear.
