What is Extreme Reactors?

2 parts

Extreme Reactors is the pack's big multiblock power mod. You build reactors out of many individual blocks placed next to each other in the world, feed them nuclear fuel, and get a whole lot of energy out the other side. The version in this pack is Extreme Reactors 1.21.1-2.4.8.[1][2]

The core machine is the Reactor, which can either generate power directly or use its heat to vaporize a coolant. That vapor gets piped into a Turbine to spin a rotor and produce even more energy. Under the hood it's all heat: irradiated fuel heats up, moderator blocks absorb part of the radiation and move heat toward the casing, and that casing heat is what makes power or boils coolant.[3][4]

Two more multiblocks round out the mod. The Reprocessor lets you reuse spent fuel, turning reactor waste into new fuel sources or other resources. The Fluidizer converts solid fuels into fluids and mixes existing fuels together to create new ones.[5][6]

Who it's for

If you want a power solution that rewards planning and tinkering rather than just spamming generators, this is it. The Basic reactor variant is deliberately cheap (maximum external size of 5x5x5 and mostly needing only iron ingots to craft) so it's a genuine early-game option, not an endgame-only toy.[7]

Energy output isn't tied to a specific power system. Power is generated internally and converted on the fly by whatever Power Tap you install, and the mod currently ships a Forge Energy tap, so it drops straight into the rest of your base's wiring.[8]

Where it sits in progression

The pack gives Extreme Reactors its own quest chapter that walks you through the whole mod in order. It opens with Graphite Bar, then the Basic reactor parts: casing and glass, followed by the controller, the control rod and fuel rod, and the power tap and solid access port.[9]

Once you've assembled a working Basic reactor, the chapter branches. One branch heads to Cyanite Ingot and then splits again into Basic turbine parts and the Reprocessor. Another branch goes to the Fluidizer, starting with Fluidizer Controller. The turbine and cyanite lines merge into Reinforced reactor parts like Reactor Casing (Reinforced).[9]

The far end of the chapter is the exotic materials chain: Blutonium Ingot, then Ludicrite Ingot and Ridiculite Ingot, then Inanite Ingot and Insanite Ingot, finishing at Insanite Block.[9]

Tip: Extreme Reactors is not on the ATM Star quest path in this pack, so treat it as an optional power route you take because you want to, not because a star requires it.[9]

How do you get started with Extreme Reactors?

4 parts

Extreme Reactors is all about multiblock machines, and the first one you want is the Reactor: a multiblock built from many blocks placed next to each other, whose main job is producing a lot of energy. The Basic variant is your starter tier, maxing out at 5x5x5 external dimensions and mostly needing iron ingots, which makes it a cheap answer to early game power.[2][7]

Before anything else, go mine some Yellorite Ore and smelt it: you need Yellorium ingots both to craft the Reactor and to fuel it. While you're at it, grab coal or charcoal, because the other backbone material is the Graphite Bar, and the quest line in this pack opens with exactly that.[2][9]

Step 1: Graphite Bars

Graphite Bar goes into nearly every early part, so set up a furnace line for it first. There are four ways to get it in this pack: smelting or blasting coal, smelting or blasting charcoal. Blasting is the faster option if you already have a Blast Furnace running.[10]

Charcoal works just as well as coal, in either furnace type.

If you end up with graphite storage blocks from another mod's compression, the pack has changed the unpacking recipe to accept any graphite storage block, so you can turn them straight back into bars.[10]

Step 2: Reactor Casing

[[item:bigreactors:basic_reactorcasing] is the building block of the Reactor. Casing is required for the frame, it's an ingredient in most of the other parts, and it can fill the faces too, so you will craft a ton of it. The quest chapter asks for it right after graphite.[9][11]

Step 3: The working parts

With Casing in stock, craft the four parts that make the multiblock actually do something. You need one Controller, one Control Rod, one Fuel Rod, one Solid Access Port and one Active Forge Energy Power Tap, plus 22 Casing blocks for the shell.[2]

Step 4: Build, fuel, switch on

  1. Place the blocks following the diagram in the in-game guide, with the Fuel Rod in the centre and a Casing below it. The multiblock forms when you place the last block.[2]
  2. If nothing forms, right-click any block you placed: you get an error message explaining the problem. Fix it and you'll either get a formed Reactor or the next error to chase.[2]
  3. Right-click the Solid Access Port, set it to Inlet mode and drop Yellorium ingots in the input slot. They're consumed quickly and turned into fuel.[2]
  4. Open the Controller and turn the Reactor on. As it heats up, energy fills the internal buffer.[2]
  5. Connect an energy pipe or a machine to the Active Power Tap, which sends energy out to whatever is attached, if it can accept it.[2]
Watch out: Only one power system can be used per Reactor, so don't mix Power Tap types in the same multiblock.[17]
Tip: Keep an Extreme Wrench handy: it flips the input/output mode of parts like the Access Port and the Fluid Ports, and it's tagged as a Forge wrench so other mods should accept it.[19]

That's a working power plant. From here the quest line branches toward Cyanite, the Turbine Housing (Basic) and Turbine Controller (Basic), the Fluidizer and the Reprocessor, all covered later in this guide.[9]

How does Extreme Reactors work?

10 parts

Extreme Reactors is built around one idea: make heat, then turn that heat into energy. Everything in the mod is a multiblock machine you assemble block by block in the world, and the Reactor is the heart of it. A Reactor can either generate power directly or boil a coolant into vapor that you pipe into Turbines.[3][20]

How a Reactor makes heat

Fuel Rods hold your reactants and get irradiated while the Reactor is running. That radiation travels in every direction perpendicular to the Fuel Rod pile axis, moderators absorb part of it and carry heat away from the rods toward the Casing, and it is the Casing heat that ultimately makes energy or vaporizes coolant. Moving heat out of the rods efficiently is the whole game of Reactor design.[4]

The Controller interface splits this into two numbers. Core heat is the heat of the fuel itself, and high core heat raises fuel usage; that heat is transferred to the casing at a rate based on your interior design. Casing heat is the useful one: high casing heat raises energy output and coolant conversion. Fuel richness tells you how heavily irradiated the core is, and higher radiation reduces fuel burnup.[21]

Fuel Rods are placed in long piles, either all vertical or all horizontal, never mixed. The first rod of each pile must follow a Casing block and the last must be followed by a Control Rod, which is why every Control Rod ends up on the same face of the Reactor.[14]

Control Rods absorb neutron radiation that would otherwise hit the reactants, slowing or stopping fuel consumption, heat and waste generation. Right-click one to set its insertion percentage for just that rod or for every rod at once, and to give it a name you can reference later from a Computer Port. The SCRAM button in the Controller turns the Reactor off and pushes every Control Rod all the way in.[15][21]

Moderators and reactants

A moderator is a block or fluid placed inside the Reactor that absorbs part of the radiation and moves heat away from the Fuel Rods. Different moderators convert radiation to heat, absorb radiation and conduct heat at different rates, and as a rule the rarer or more expensive the block, the better its stats. Air technically works, but barely. Only valid moderators can go inside, and an invalid one will stop the multiblock from forming.[22]

Reactants come in two kinds: fuels that sustain the chain reaction, and the waste left behind once the fuel is consumed. By default the mod registers four of them, the fuels Yellorium and Blutonium and their wastes Cyanite and Magentite, and each fuel behaves differently in the Reactor. Every reactant has a list of items that produce it, so Yellorium ingots fed into a Solid Access Port become Yellorium, and Cyanite ejected from the Reactor comes back out as Cyanite Ingot.[23]

Tip: Turn on Minecraft's advanced tooltips with F3 + H and any block, fluid or item that works as a moderator, an Inductor Coil or a fuel source gets a tagged tooltip telling you so. There is a client option to switch those extra tooltips off if you would rather not spoil yourself.[21][22][24]

The pack changed the Yellorium Block recipe so it accepts any ingot in the common uranium tag, which means uranium from other mods in the pack feeds straight into your reactor fuel chain.[10]

Passive or active cooling

A Reactor can be built in one of two operational modes, and the mode decides what it produces. A passively cooled Reactor generates energy directly from the heat of its core with no external medium, and any energy that does not fit in the internal buffer is simply lost.[21][25][26]

An actively cooled Reactor instead uses a coolant to dissipate its internal heat. You need at least two Fluid Ports: one set to insert coolant, one set to extract the vapor. Casing heat superheats the coolant in the coolant tank, the vapor collects in the vapor tank, and you pipe that vapor into Turbines to make energy. By default the mod registers water as a valid coolant and steam as its vapor, and only recognised coolants and vapors are accepted.[21][27][28]

Turbines

A Turbine turns vapor into energy by spinning a Rotor. Vapor is drawn from the Vapor Fluid Tank at the flow rate you set in the Controller, each Rotor Blade captures a small amount of it, and engaged Inductor Coils extract energy from the spinning shaft based on rotor speed and the averaged efficiency and drag of your coil blocks. Disengaged coils extract nothing but let the Rotor spin faster.[21][29]

The Rotor is built from a single Rotor Bearing on one face, a line of Rotor Shaft blocks reaching the opposite face and ending against a Housing block, as many Rotor Blades as you like perpendicular to the shaft, and coils near the closing Housing. You can place up to three rings of coils, each ring up to eight blocks, and mixing coil types is allowed because the Turbine averages their properties.[30]

Watch out: Each Blade variant has a maximum vapor capacity, shown on its tooltip. Blades only fully capture an amount of vapor equal to their capacity, so if your flow rate rises past what your blades can handle, efficiency drops. Size the blade count to the flow rate you configured.[21][30]

Inductor Coils work like moderators do: a score of vanilla and modded blocks are registered as valid coils, rarer or pricier blocks generally have better stats, and an invalid block around the shaft will prevent the Turbine from forming.[24]

Variants and size limits

  • Basic is the starter tier: Reactors up to 5x5x5 external dimensions, Turbines up to 5x5x10, and mostly iron to craft. Basic Turbines can use up to 1,000 mB/t of vapor to spin their Rotor.[7][31]
  • Reinforced lets you build as big as you want, up to 256 blocks, with the maximum set in the mod's config file. Reinforced parts cost more and are a bit less efficient per block, but their sheer scale more than makes up for it.[32][33]
  • Some parts only exist on one variant. The Computer Port, Fuel Injection Port, Forge Fluid Port and Mekanism Fluid Port for Reactors are Reinforced-only, while Casing, Controller, Control Rod, Fuel Rod, Glass, Power Taps, Redstone Port, Charging Port and Solid Access Port are available on all variants.[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][34][35][36][37][38]

Unverified The handbook's Reinforced Turbine page mentions a 2,000 mB/t vapor limit, but it labels that figure as belonging to Basic Turbines, so the exact maximum flow for Reinforced Turbines could not be confirmed. The pack's configured maximum multiblock size is also unconfirmed.

Getting power, fluids and items in and out

Energy generated inside a Reactor or Turbine sits in an internal buffer and is only converted to a real power system when a Power Tap pulls it out, so the taps you install define the machine's output system. The mod ships a Forge Energy Power Tap, and only one power system, and therefore one type of tap, can be used per machine. If the buffer fills up, newly generated energy is lost.[8][17][21][39]

Many parts that talk to the outside world come in passive and active forms. A passive part does nothing on its own and waits for the neighbouring block to pull or push; an active part constantly pushes energy, fluids and items out or pulls them in, but refuses to let the neighbour insert or extract. Mixing the two is how you fine-tune a distribution network.[18]

  • Solid Access Port: converts ingots into reactants in inlet mode and spits waste ingots out in outlet mode. It is the quick way to fuel a Reactor, but a small material loss is unavoidable.[16]
  • Fuel Injection Port: handles fluid reactants, inlet for fluid fuel and outlet for fluid waste, with no loss of material at all. Reinforced only.[35]
  • Forge Fluid Port: inserts or extracts coolant and vapor on actively cooled Reactors and on Turbines, accepting only valid coolants and vapors.[36][40]
  • Mekanism Fluid Port: pulls vapor out of an actively cooled Reactor as a Mekanism gas, converting it automatically if a Mekanism Rotary recipe exists for that fluid and respecting that recipe's conversion rate.[41]
  • Forge Charging Port: feeds the machine's stored energy into an item in the input slot, then moves it to the output slot when full, with an eject button to stop early.[38][42]

The Extreme Wrench flips the input/output mode of parts like the Access Ports and Fluid Ports, and it carries the Forge wrench tag so it works with other mods too.[19]

Automation

The Redstone Port is the simple automation route. On a Reactor it offers three input settings, turning the Reactor on or off, ejecting waste to Access Ports in outlet mode, and setting Control Rod insertion, plus six output conditions that emit a signal based on casing heat, core heat, fuel richness, fuel amount, waste amount or stored energy. You will usually want two or more ports to cover a full control loop.[37]

Turbines get their own Redstone Port with three inputs, on/off, engaging or disengaging the Induction Coils, and changing the flow rate, plus four outputs based on rotor speed, coolant amount, vapor amount and stored energy.[43]

For anything more complex, the Computer Port exposes a standard set of methods to query status and control behaviour. It needs an external mod that adds programmable computers, and the only supported one is CC:Tweaked.[34][44]

Tip: Waste handling can be automated from the Controller itself: in Automatic Mode waste is ejected from the core as soon as possible, while Manual Mode requires you to eject it yourself from that screen, by Redstone or via the Computer Port.[21]

The Reprocessor

The Reprocessor is the multiblock that closes the fuel loop, converting Reactor waste into new fuel sources or other resources. It is a fixed 3 by 3 footprint, seven blocks tall, built from Casing plus one each of the other parts, and Glass can replace Casing on the vertical faces but never on the frame.[5][45][46]

  • Waste Injector: takes waste material from the Reactor, either by hand through its GUI or from a pipe.[47]
  • Fluid Injector: supplies the fluid a reprocessing job needs, and different waste types may need different fluids.[48]
  • Power Port: accepts any Forge Energy compatible cable or generator to run the machine.[49]
  • Collector: picks up the finished material from the interior once a job completes, and the Output Port hands it to you or to a pipe.[50][51]
  • Controller: turns the machine on and off and shows fluids, energy and current job status.[52]

The Fluidizer

The Fluidizer converts solid fuels into fluids and mixes existing fuels into new ones. It is a 3x3x3 minimum-size machine of Casing blocks and the other parts, with Glass usable on any face but not on the frame. Every part is mandatory except Glass and the Injectors, and it is the Injectors that decide what the machine does.[6][53][54]

  • Solid mode: exactly one Solid Injector turns solid fuel sources like ingots into fluid fuel.[55]
  • Solid Mixing mode: exactly two Solid Injectors turn two solid sources into fluid and mix them into a new fuel type.[55]
  • Fluid Mixing mode: exactly two Fluid Injectors blend two fluid fuels into a new one.[55]

The Power Port takes Forge Energy from any compatible cable or generator, the Output Port lets you pipe the finished fluid fuel out, and the Controller shows fluid levels, energy and job status. All three Fluidizer recipe types have their own JEI categories, so you can look up what mixes into what in-game.[21][56][57][58]

How do you progress through Extreme Reactors?

5 parts

Extreme Reactors in this pack is gated behind its own quest chain, and that chain is the cleanest way to see the progression. It starts with a single smelted bar, walks you through a Basic reactor, then opens up into turbines, the Fluidizer, the Reprocessor, and finally the reinforced tier and the exotic metals at the end.[9]

Tier 0: Graphite

Everything begins with Graphite Bar. The first quest in the chain just asks you for one, and it's the cheapest step in the whole mod because you can smelt or blast it from coal or charcoal.[9][10]

Graphite BarMod recipe

Smelting

Recipe id: bigreactors:smelting/graphite_from_coal

Charcoal works too, and both variants have a blasting version for double speed.

Tier 1: The Basic reactor

The Basic variant is your starter reactor. It maxes out at 5x5x5 external dimensions and mostly needs only iron ingots to craft, which makes it the cheap answer to early-game power.[7]

The quests push you through the parts in order. First Reactor Casing (Basic) and Reactor Glass (Basic), then the chain branches into Reactor Controller (Basic), the pair of Reactor Active Forge Energy Power Tap (Basic) and Reactor Solid Access Port (Basic), and the pair of Reactor Control Rod (Basic) and Reactor Fuel Rod (Basic). Those branches all funnel into a quest in "?", which wants a full set of all six part types at once, that's your signal that it's time to actually build the thing.[9]

The casing is the base for most other Basic reactor parts.

Tip: Casing is the currency of this tier: the controller, control rod, solid access port, glass and active power tap are all built on top of a Reactor Casing (Basic), so batch a stack before you start crafting parts.[10]

For the build itself you want 22 casing, 1 controller, 1 control rod, 1 fuel rod, 1 solid access port and 1 active Forge Energy power tap, with the fuel rod in the centre and a casing below it. Glass is optional and can always be swapped for another casing block. Feed Yellorium ingots into the solid access port set to Inlet mode, turn the reactor on from the controller, and pull power out of the active power tap.[2]

Tier 2: Cyanite, turbines and the Fluidizer

After the first reactor, the chain opens three ways: a quest in "?" for Cyanite Ingot, a quest in "?" for more reactor casing, and a quest in "?" for the Fluidizer Controller. Cyanite is the real gate here, because it's what the entire Basic turbine line is made of.[9]

If you'd rather not run a reactor to get cyanite, this pack also lets you grow it, Mystical Agriculture cyanite essence crafts straight into Cyanite Ingot.[10]

Shaped No Mirror (cucumber)

8 × Cyanite Essence

The Basic turbine follows the same shape as the reactor: Turbine Housing (Basic) and Turbine Controller (Basic) first, then branches for Turbine Glass (Basic), the port pair of Turbine Active Forge Fluid Port (Basic) and Turbine Active Forge Energy Power Tap (Basic), and the rotor set of Turbine Rotor Bearing (Basic), Turbine Rotor Shaft (Basic) and Turbine Rotor Blade (Basic).[9]

The Basic turbine tops out at 5x5x10 and, like the reactor, mostly wants iron. It can consume up to 1,000 mB/t of vapor to spin its rotor, which is what an actively cooled reactor feeds it.[31]

The Fluidizer runs as a parallel branch off the controller quest: casing and glass in a quest in "?", output and power ports in a quest in "?", and the two injectors in a quest in "?". It's a multiblock that converts solid fuels into fluids and mixes existing fuels into new ones, with a 3x3x3 minimum footprint.[6][9][53]

Tier 3: Reinforced reactor and the Reprocessor

Once you have both turbine casing and cyanite, a quest in "?" unlocks the reinforced tier with Reactor Casing (Reinforced) and Reactor Active Forge Fluid Port (Reinforced). Those fluid ports are what let you run an actively cooled reactor: you need at least two, one inserting coolant and one extracting the generated vapor to pipe into your turbines.[9][27]

You don't have to throw away your Basic casing either: the pack keeps the upgrade recipe that converts it directly into the reinforced version.[10]

The Reprocessor line runs alongside it, starting from Reprocessor Casing in a quest in "?" and Reprocessor Controller in a quest in "?", then branching into the collector and waste injector, the power port, fluid injector and output port, and a second casing quest. It's the multiblock that turns reactor waste back into new fuel sources or other resources.[5][9]

Endgame: the exotic metals

The final stretch is a metal ladder, and each rung is a Reprocessor recipe. a quest in "?" wants Blutonium Ingot, then a quest in "?" wants both Ludicrite Ingot and Ridiculite Ingot.[9][10]

From there the chain splits one last time: a quest in "?" for Insanite Ingot after you've built the Reactor Fuel Injection Port (Reinforced), and a quest in "?" for Inanite Ingot. Both feed the capstone, a quest in "?", which asks for an Insanite Block.[9]

The last craft in the chain.

Watch out: a quest in "?" needs all three Fluidizer branches done first, so don't skip the Fluidizer if you want to reach the endgame metals.[9]

How does Extreme Reactors work with other mods?

4 parts

Extreme Reactors ties into a few other mods in this pack. The clearest links are in the recipes: the pack changes what Yellorium smelts into, Mystical Agriculture can produce Cyanite, and one of the pack's own endgame items needs a block from this mod.[10]

Yellorium turns into Uranium

The pack has changed the Yellorium recipes. Smelting or blasting Raw Yellorium gives you an Uranium Ingot from All The Ores. Breaking down a Yellorium Block gives the same ingot. These are pack changes, not the mod's defaults.[10]

Energy and fluids with other mods

The Fluidizer and Reprocessor have their own Power Port, and any Forge Energy compatible cable or generator can feed the Fluidizer's. The Active Forge Energy Power Tap pushes energy out to a connected block that can accept it. That means cables and machines from other mods can plug straight into your reactor setup.[2][56]

Coolants work the same way. By default the mod registers water as a coolant and steam as its vapor, and other mods or packs can add or change these fluids. The sources don't show whether this pack changes them.[28]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Extreme Reactors?

4 parts

Everything for this mod lives in a single quest chapter called extreme_reactors. None of its quests have titles, so I'll refer to them by ID. Each one simply asks you to get specific items from the mod, and the order below comes from which quests unlock which.[9]

Basic reactor

The chapter opens with a quest in "?", which asks for a Graphite Bar. It depends on a quest that I can't reference here, so I can't say where it sits in the wider quest book.[9]

Next comes a quest in "?", asking for Reactor Casing (Basic) and Reactor Glass (Basic). Three quests unlock from it, and you can take them in any order:[9]

a quest in "?" follows the controller quest. It asks for the casing, controller, solid access port, power tap, control rod and fuel rod all together. Completing it opens the rest of the chapter.[9]

Fluidizer and the high-tier ingots

a quest in "?" asks for the Fluidizer Controller. Three quests branch from it:[9]

You need all three done before a quest in "?", which asks for the Reactor Fuel Injection Port (Reinforced). After that, a quest in "?" wants an Insanite Ingot. a quest in "?" wants an Inanite Ingot and also needs the ludicrite quest described below. The chapter's last quest here is a quest in "?", an Insanite Block, which needs both the insanite and inanite quests.[9]

Cyanite, turbine and reinforced reactor

Also unlocked by the full basic reactor quest are a quest in "?", which asks for another Reactor Casing (Basic), and a quest in "?", which asks for a Cyanite Ingot. The cyanite quest leads to both the turbine and the reprocessor.[9]

a quest in "?" asks for Turbine Housing (Basic) and Turbine Controller (Basic). Four quests follow it:[9]

Reprocessor

The reprocessor line also starts from the cyanite quest. a quest in "?" asks for the Reprocessor Casing, and a quest in "?" then asks for the Reprocessor Controller. Three quests follow the controller:[9]

The casing quest leads to a quest in "?", which asks for a Blutonium Ingot. After that, a quest in "?" asks for a Ludicrite Ingot and a Ridiculite Ingot. That quest feeds back into the inanite quest above.[9]
