What is Botany Pots?

3 parts

Botany Pots adds the Botany Pot, a block that grows all kinds of crops. You can use it as decoration, or to make farming certain crops much easier. The mod was inspired by Davenonymous's Bonsai Trees mod.[1]

The pack includes Botany Pots 21.1.44 for NeoForge 1.21.1. It was first included in an earlier version of the pack, 4.6 or before.[2]

What it gives you

  • Harvesting a crop in a pot automatically replants the seed.[1]
  • A Hopper upgrade lets the pot harvest itself and push items into a chest or another block with an inventory.[1]
  • Pots come in seventeen different colors.[1]
  • Crops, soils and fertilizers are defined through datapacks, and CraftTweaker can remove, modify or add them.[1]

How it works in practice

Craft a pot, then pick the crop you want and a soil that suits it. Wheat grows in dirt, for example, and nether wart grows in soul sand. Right click the pot with the soil first, then with the seed, and growth starts.[1]

Growth takes a while, but bone meal and other fertilizers speed it up. When the crop is ready, right click it to harvest and replant in one go. To take items out of the pot, sneak and right click with an empty hand, or just break the block.[1]

Who it is for

It suits anyone who wants low-effort, compact farms, or a nicer-looking way to grow crops. The simple right-click workflow makes it easy to start, and the Hopper upgrade covers automation.[1]

Unverified The sources do not show where Botany Pots fits in this pack's progression. They do not show it on the ATM Star path, in any quests, or in any guidebook. The project page lists crop support for several other mods, but the sources do not confirm which of those are in this pack or whether the pack changes any recipes or values.

How do you get started with Botany Pots?

4 parts

Botany Pots lets you grow crops inside a pot block. The big perk is that harvesting a crop automatically replants the seed. Here is the order I'd go in.[1]

Step one: craft a Botany Pot

Everything starts with the pot itself. This pack has pot variants in terracotta, glazed terracotta, concrete and brick, so pick the look you like. The Brick version, Brick Botany Pot, is a good example to start with.[3]

This is the in-pack recipe for the Brick pot. The other materials have their own recipes.

Step two: pick a soil and a seed

Next, think about what you want to grow and which soil it needs. There are many soil blocks, and certain crops need certain soils. Wheat grows in dirt, for example, and nether wart grows in soul sand. If a crop doesn't suit the soil, its tooltip tells you it can't be planted there.[1][4]

Step three: plant, grow and harvest

  1. Right click the pot with your soil first.[1]
  2. Right click it again with your seed to start the growth process.[1]
  3. Be patient, or speed things up by right clicking with bone meal or another fertilizer.[1]
  4. When the crop is finished, right click it to harvest. The pot plants another one for you.[1]
Tip: To take items back out of a pot, sneak and right click the block with an empty hand. Breaking the block works too.[1]

Finally: automate it with a Hopper Botany Pot

Once manual farming gets tedious, make a hopper pot. The Hopper Botany Pot upgrade lets the pot harvest itself and put the items into a chest or another block with an inventory. In this pack you can upgrade a pot you already have, or use the quick recipe that makes the hopper pot in one go. The Brick one is Brick Hopper Botany Pot.[1][3]

How does Botany Pots work?

5 parts

Botany Pots is a simple mod on the surface. You get a pot block that grows crops, and the whole system is built around three things: the pot, the soil in it, and the seed you plant. There's no power, fluid or multiblock setup to worry about in what the sources describe, so this section covers how a pot works and how you automate it.[1]

Planting and growing

Crops need the right soil. The mod's own example is wheat growing in dirt and nether wart growing in soul sand. To start a crop, right click the pot with your soil first, then with your seed. If you try a soil that doesn't suit the crop, the pot tells you with the tooltip "Can not be planted in" followed by the soil.[1][4]

Growth takes a while, but you can speed it up by right clicking with bone meal or another fertilizer. Which soils, crops and fertilizers exist is controlled by datapacks, which is how the mod supports other mods' crops.[1]

Harvesting

  • When the crop has finished growing, right click it to harvest. The seed is replanted automatically, so you don't have to replant it yourself.[1]
  • To take items out of the pot, sneak and right click it with an empty hand. Breaking the block also works.[1]

Automation with the Hopper Botany Pot

The hopper upgrade is the mod's built-in automation. A hopper pot harvests itself and puts the items into a chest or any other block with an inventory. Because harvesting already replants the seed, this gives you a self-running farm, and you only need to feed it fertilizer if you want it to grow faster.[1]

You can craft a hopper pot in two ways. You can upgrade a finished pot, or you can use the single-step "quick" recipe. Here is the upgrade route for a black terracotta pot, which gives you the Black Hopper Botany Pot:[1][3]

Pot variants

The mod offers seventeen colors. The pack's recipes show each color in three base materials: terracotta, glazed terracotta and concrete. For example, there is the Black Botany Pot, the Black Glazed Botany Pot and the Black Concrete Botany Pot. Each of these has a hopper version and a waxed version, such as the Blue Concrete Hopper Botany Pot and the Blue Concrete Waxed Botany Pot.[1][3]

A basic pot is made from the matching colored block and a flower pot. Here is the plain blue terracotta pot:[3]

Tools used in pots

The mod also adds an enchantment called Idle Hands. An item with it is effectively useless when a player uses it, but it takes no durability damage when used in a Botany Pot.[4]

Unverified The sources don't confirm what the waxed pots do differently from normal ones, how long crops take to grow, or whether the pack changes any of the mod's default crops, soils or fertilizers. The pack also has no config files for this mod. Check these in game before relying on them.

How do you progress through Botany Pots?

3 parts

The only progression detail the sources show for Botany Pots is in its crafting recipes. Each pot comes in a base form, a hopper form and a waxed form, and that is the path you can follow here.[3]

First, pick a material for your base pot

Every base pot is crafted from a block of its material plus a flower pot. The recipes shown cover terracotta, glazed terracotta, concrete, brick, deepslate brick and end stone brick pots. The colors shown include black, blue, brown and cyan, and there is a gray concrete pot as well.[3]

The plain black terracotta pot is a good example of this step: Black Botany Pot.[3]

A base pot is a shaped recipe built from a block of the material and a flower pot.

Next, the hopper upgrade

Each base pot has a hopper version, like Black Hopper Botany Pot. You can upgrade a finished pot with a shapeless recipe, or use the shaped "quick" recipe that builds the hopper pot straight from raw parts.[3]

The quick recipe skips crafting the base pot as a separate step.

Finally, the waxed variant

Each base pot also has a waxed version, like Black Waxed Botany Pot. You make it by combining a finished base pot with an extra item in a shapeless recipe. The recipes shown start the waxed version from the base pot, not from the hopper pot.[3]

The waxed pot is a shapeless recipe that starts from the finished base pot.

Tip: If you already know you want a hopper pot, use the quick recipe so you skip the separate base-pot craft. The same base, hopper and waxed pattern repeats for the other materials shown, such as Brick Botany Pot and Deepslate Brick Botany Pot.[3]

Unverified The sources here do not show any quest chapter or quest path placement for Botany Pots, so check the pack's quest book in game to see whether it covers this mod.

What changed in Botany Pots between versions?

1 part

Botany Pots has been in All the Mods 10 since version 4.6, and the pack has only ever bumped its version since then. Version 8.1 ships Botany Pots 21.1.44.[2][5]
