What is Botany Pots?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Botany Pots adds the Botany Pot, a block that grows all kinds of crops. You can use it as decoration, or to make farming certain crops much easier. The mod was inspired by Davenonymous's Bonsai Trees mod.[1]

The pack includes Botany Pots 21.1.44 for NeoForge 1.21.1. It was first included in an earlier version of the pack, 4.6 or before.[2]

What it gives you

  • Harvesting a crop in a pot automatically replants the seed.[1]
  • A Hopper upgrade lets the pot harvest itself and push items into a chest or another block with an inventory.[1]
  • Pots come in seventeen different colors.[1]
  • Crops, soils and fertilizers are defined through datapacks, and CraftTweaker can remove, modify or add them.[1]

How it works in practice

Craft a pot, then pick the crop you want and a soil that suits it. Wheat grows in dirt, for example, and nether wart grows in soul sand. Right click the pot with the soil first, then with the seed, and growth starts.[1]

Growth takes a while, but bone meal and other fertilizers speed it up. When the crop is ready, right click it to harvest and replant in one go. To take items out of the pot, sneak and right click with an empty hand, or just break the block.[1]

Who it is for

It suits anyone who wants low-effort, compact farms, or a nicer-looking way to grow crops. The simple right-click workflow makes it easy to start, and the Hopper upgrade covers automation.[1]

Unverified The sources do not show where Botany Pots fits in this pack's progression. They do not show it on the ATM Star path, in any quests, or in any guidebook. The project page lists crop support for several other mods, but the sources do not confirm which of those are in this pack or whether the pack changes any recipes or values.

How do you get started with Botany Pots?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Botany Pots lets you grow crops in a block, and harvesting replants the seed for you automatically. Getting started is simple: make a pot, give it a soil and a seed, and let it grow.[1]

Step 1: Craft a Botany Pot

Pots come in many colors and materials, and the pack has a separate crafting recipe for each one. The Brick Botany Pot is a good one to start with.[1][3]

The mod offers pots in seventeen different colors, so you can pick a look that suits your base. Pots work as decoration too.[1]

Step 2: Plant your first crop

Think about what you want to grow, because crops need the right soil. The mod's own examples are wheat in dirt and nether wart in soul sand. If a crop doesn't suit a soil, the pot's tooltip tells you it can't be planted there.[1][4]

  1. Place the pot and right click it with your soil block.[1]
  2. Right click it again with your seed to start growth.[1]
  3. Be patient, or speed things up by right clicking with bone meal or another fertilizer.[1]
  4. When the crop is fully grown, right click it to harvest. The pot plants another one automatically.[1]
Tip: To take items back out of a pot, sneak and right click it with an empty hand. Breaking the block works too.[1]

Step 3: Automate with a Hopper Botany Pot

Once you have the basics down, the hopper upgrade is the next thing to make. A Hopper Botany Pot harvests itself and puts the items into a chest or another block with an inventory, so you don't have to harvest by hand.[1]

You can upgrade an existing pot, which is the first recipe below, or use the all-in-one "quick" recipe, which makes the hopper pot without crafting the plain pot first.[3]

Brick Hopper Botany Pot is the hopper version of Brick Botany Pot. The other pot materials and colors shown in the recipe list have the same pair of recipes.[3]

Each pot material also has a waxed variant with its own crafting recipe, for example Brick Waxed Botany Pot.[3]

How does Botany Pots work?

4 parts

Botany Pots is built around one idea: a pot block that grows crops for you. As the mod's project page describes it, you put soil in, add a seed, wait, and harvest, and the seed is replanted automatically each time you harvest. There is no power, fluid or multiblock setup to learn, and the sources here don't show any. The only automation is the hopper upgrade, covered below.[1]

Planting and harvesting

The project page says each crop needs a suitable soil, and its own examples are wheat in dirt and nether wart in soul sand. Soil goes in first, then the seed.[1]

  1. Craft a pot (recipes are further down).[5]
  2. Right click the pot with your soil, then right click it with your seed. The project page says this starts the growth.[1]
  3. Wait for it to grow, or speed it up by right clicking with bone meal or another fertilizer, as the project page describes.[1]
  4. Once the crop is done growing, right click it to harvest. The project page says another seed is planted automatically.[1]
  5. To remove items from the pot, sneak and right click it with an empty hand. The project page says breaking the block also works.[1]

Hopper pots and automation

The hopper upgrade is the mod's automation feature. The project page says it allows the pot to harvest itself and put items in a chest or other block with an inventory.[1]

You can upgrade a finished pot with a hopper, or use the quick recipe that makes the hopper pot in one step. Here is the black concrete version of both.[5]

Pot variants

Pots come in plain, hopper and waxed forms. The materials include terracotta, glazed terracotta and concrete in the dye colors, plus brick styles such as Brick Botany Pot.[4][6]

The project page advertises seventeen different colors.[1]

A plain pot is crafted from a matching colored block and a flower pot. Here is the black concrete one, Black Concrete Botany Pot.[5]

Every color and material follows the same pattern.

Waxed pots are made by combining a finished pot with a honeycomb. The sources here don't say what waxing changes in play.[5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: botanypots:botanypots/crafting/black_concrete_waxed_botany_pot

A finished pot plus a honeycomb gives the waxed version.

In this pack, the recipe dump counts 122 shaped and 122 shapeless Botany Pots crafting recipes, each with a different result.[5]

The pot blocks I checked drop themselves as items when broken.[7][8][9]

Crops, soils and fertilizers in the pack

Crops, soils and fertilizers are all defined through datapack files, not hardcoded. That is why other mods can add their own plants.[1]

The pack's own recipe fix script touches one such entry, botanypots:allthemodium/crop/ancient_soulberries, and adds conditions built from its input.[10]

Tip: The project page says the hopper upgrade lets a pot harvest itself into a chest or another block with an inventory. Pair a hopper pot with one of those and you have a self-replanting farm.[1]

How do you progress through Botany Pots?

3 parts

Here's the honest picture for Botany Pots in this pack: the sources I have show a crafting ladder of pot types, not a set of stat tiers. Every pot comes in plain, hopper and waxed forms, and each form can be made in a range of base materials. What I can't show you is any difference in growth speed or yield between materials, so I won't invent one.[5]

The forms of every pot

Take the black terracotta line as the example. You begin with the plain pot, Black Botany Pot, which is crafted straight from its base material.[5]

The plain pot is the starting point for every other form.

The hopper form, Black Hopper Botany Pot, has an upgrade route and a quick route in this pack. You can upgrade a pot you already own, or use the "quick" recipe and make the hopper pot in a straight craft from the base material.[5]

Crafting Shapeless

Upgrade route: turn an existing plain pot into a hopper pot.

The waxed form, Black Waxed Botany Pot, is a separate item made from the matching plain pot.[5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: botanypots:botanypots/crafting/black_terracotta_waxed_botany_pot

Waxed pots are crafted from the plain pot of the same material.

Choosing a base material

The base material is what changes between lines. The recipes I can see cover terracotta, glazed terracotta and concrete in black, blue, brown and cyan, plus bricks and deepslate bricks. The recipe dump counts 122 shaped and 122 shapeless recipes for this mod, and only some of them are written out in the sources here.[5]

The deepslate brick pot follows the same plain-pot pattern as every other material.

Breaking a pot

When you break one of the black concrete pots (plain, hopper or waxed), its loot table gives back that same pot, as long as the block survives an explosion. The brick pots show the same pattern.[6][7][8][9][11][12]

What changed in Botany Pots between versions?

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.7 ships Botany Pots 21.1.44. The mod was first included in the pack in version 1.1.1 or earlier. Below are the changes I can confirm from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[13]

  • 21.1.44 (the version in this pack): coral drops no longer have tool requirements, and their loot tables are simplified. Tall and short grass, and tall and short ferns, now drop items without silk touch.[13][14]
  • 21.1.41: build dependencies were updated. Nothing here changes how you play.[15]
  • 21.1.40: the config is no longer loaded a second time during recipe loading.[16]
  • 21.1.39: the config file is now initialized from the main thread. This should fix a FileAlreadyExistsException on startup.[17]
  • 21.1.34: the mod left beta and started publishing public releases, along with a cleanup of the project files.[18]
Tip: If you see the loot table changes in 21.1.44 in action, you can now get grass, fern and coral drops without needing silk touch or a specific tool, as the changelog describes.[14]
