What is Botany Pots?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Botany Pots adds the Botany Pot, a block that grows all kinds of crops. You can use it as decoration, or to make farming certain crops much easier. The mod was inspired by Davenonymous's Bonsai Trees mod.[1]

The pack includes Botany Pots 21.1.44 for NeoForge 1.21.1. It was first included in an earlier version of the pack, 4.6 or before.[2]

What it gives you

  • Harvesting a crop in a pot automatically replants the seed.[1]
  • A Hopper upgrade lets the pot harvest itself and push items into a chest or another block with an inventory.[1]
  • Pots come in seventeen different colors.[1]
  • Crops, soils and fertilizers are defined through datapacks, and CraftTweaker can remove, modify or add them.[1]

How it works in practice

Craft a pot, then pick the crop you want and a soil that suits it. Wheat grows in dirt, for example, and nether wart grows in soul sand. Right click the pot with the soil first, then with the seed, and growth starts.[1]

Growth takes a while, but bone meal and other fertilizers speed it up. When the crop is ready, right click it to harvest and replant in one go. To take items out of the pot, sneak and right click with an empty hand, or just break the block.[1]

Who it is for

It suits anyone who wants low-effort, compact farms, or a nicer-looking way to grow crops. The simple right-click workflow makes it easy to start, and the Hopper upgrade covers automation.[1]

Unverified The sources do not show where Botany Pots fits in this pack's progression. They do not show it on the ATM Star path, in any quests, or in any guidebook. The project page lists crop support for several other mods, but the sources do not confirm which of those are in this pack or whether the pack changes any recipes or values.

How do you get started with Botany Pots?

3 parts

The mod's own description says Botany Pots lets you grow crops in a pot, and that harvesting a crop in the pot automatically replants the seed. Here is the order I'd go in.[1]

Step 1: craft the Botany Pot

Everything starts with the Botany Pot. This is the in-pack recipe:[3]

Step 2: pick a soil and a seed

The mod's description says to think about which crop you want and what it grows in before you plant anything. It says there are many kinds of soil blocks and that certain crops need certain soils, with wheat in dirt and nether wart in soul sand as its examples.[1]

  1. The description starts you off by right clicking the pot with your soil block.[1]
  2. Next you right click the pot with your seed, which the description says starts the growth process.[1]
  3. The crop may take a while, and the description says right clicking with bone meal or other fertilizers can speed it up.[1]
  4. When the crop is done growing, the description says to right click it to harvest, and another is planted automatically.[1]
  5. To remove items from the pot, the description says to sneak and right click with an empty hand. Breaking the block also works.[1]
Tip: The mod's description says harvesting a crop in a Botany Pot automatically replants the seed, so you can keep right clicking to harvest.[1]

Step 3: upgrade to the Hopper Botany Pot

Once the basic pot is running, the Hopper Botany Pot is the upgrade to aim for. The mod's description says it lets the pot harvest itself and put the items in a chest or another block with an inventory. The mod also has an advancement for getting one.[1][4]

In this pack, one way to make it turns a pot you already have into a hopper pot:[3]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: botanypots:botanypots/crafting/terracotta_hopper_botany_pot

Another is a compact recipe that makes the hopper pot directly, without crafting the plain pot first:[3]

How does Botany Pots work?

4 parts

The Botany Pot is a block that holds a soil and a seed and grows crops for you. Harvesting a crop automatically replants the seed, so once a pot is set up it keeps running.[1]

Planting and harvesting

  1. Craft a Botany Pot, then pick the crop you want and the soil it needs. Wheat grows in dirt, for example, and nether wart grows in soul sand.[1]
  2. Right click the pot with your soil, then right click it with your seed. That starts the growth process.[1]
  3. Speed things up by right clicking with bone meal or other fertilizers.[1]
  4. When the crop is done, right click it to harvest. The seed is planted again automatically.[1]
  5. To take items out of the pot, sneak and right click with an empty hand. Breaking the block works too.[1]

Soil and seed matching

A pot needs both a soil and a seed. The tooltips tell you what is missing: "Place a seed to start growing." or "The seed requires soil material to grow." If the pair does not match you get "The seed can not grow in the current soil." or "The soil can not sustain the current seed." An item that is not a usable seed or soil says so as well.[4]

The matching works through categories. Each crop file lists the soil categories it accepts, and each soil file lists the categories it provides. Most of this pack's crops, like canola, flax, rice and the tree saplings, use the dirt category. The Ignitium seeds crop uses the ignitium_block category instead, and the Ignitium block soil provides that same category.[5][6][7][8][9]

Soils also carry a growth modifier. In this pack the Ignitium block soil sets it to 1.66, and the pot tooltip shows it as "Seeds will grow at %sX speed."[4][9]

Growth time and drops

Each crop file sets its own growth time in ticks. In this pack's data, canola, flax and rice take 1,200, the saplings I checked (acacia, the Environmental trees, the Allthemodium saplings) take 2,400, and Ignitium seeds take 4,800.[5][6][7][8][10][11][12]

Drops are a list of entries, each with a chance and, usually, a minimum and maximum number of rolls. A few examples from this pack's files:[5][8][10]

  • Canola: canola at a chance of 0.5 with 1 to 2 rolls, plus a 0.01 chance of getting the seeds back.[5]
  • Acacia sapling: acacia logs at a chance of 1.0 with 2 to 4 rolls, sticks at 0.1 with 1 to 2 rolls, and the sapling itself at 0.15.[10]
  • Ignitium seeds: Ignitium essence at a chance of 1.0, plus 0.01 chances each for the seeds and for fertilized essence.[8]

Some of the pack's crop files, such as the Allthemodium and Environmental trees, only load if the sapling item exists in the game. That is a load condition written into each file.[11][12]

Automation with the hopper pot

The Hopper Botany Pot is the upgrade that lets a pot harvest itself and put the items into a chest or any other block with an inventory. There are two recipes for it in this pack, one that upgrades an existing pot and one compact version.[1][3]

How do you progress through Botany Pots?

4 parts

Progression for Botany Pots in this pack follows the in-pack recipes and the crop and soil data files the pack ships. The path runs from the basic pot, to the hopper version, to crops that take longer to grow and need a special soil.[3][8][9]

The pots

Everything starts with the Botany Pot. It is a simple craft made from a flower pot and terracotta.[3]

The next step up is the Hopper Botany Pot. You can upgrade a finished Botany Pot by combining it with a hopper. This is a shapeless recipe, so the layout doesn't matter.[3]

Recipe id: botanypots:botanypots/crafting/terracotta_hopper_botany_pot

There is also a compact route that skips the plain pot. It crafts the same Hopper Botany Pot straight from a flower pot, a hopper and terracotta.[3]

Easy dirt crops

The pack ships crop recipes for the Actually Additions plants. Canola, flax and rice seeds all use the dirt soil category and take 1,200 growth ticks.[5][6][7]

  • Canola: a chance of 0.5 to drop canola, with 1 to 2 rolls. There is also a chance of 0.01 of getting Canola Seeds back.[5]
  • Rice: the same pattern. A chance of 0.5 to drop rice with 1 to 2 rolls, and a chance of 0.01 of getting Rice Seeds back.[7]
  • Flax: a chance of 0.5 to drop string with 1 roll, and a chance of 0.01 of getting Flax Seeds back.[6]

Allthemodium saplings

The next tier up is the Allthemodium trees. The ancient, demonic and soul saplings still use the dirt category, but they take 2,400 growth ticks instead of 1,200.[5][12][13][14]

  • Ancient: the log variants each have a chance of 0.33. The first log type rolls 2 to 4 times and the other two roll 1 to 2 times. Sticks have a chance of 0.2, and the sapling comes back with a chance of 0.01.[12]
  • Demonic: the demonic log drops with a chance of 1.0 and 2 to 4 rolls. Sticks have a chance of 0.2 and the sapling has a chance of 0.01.[13]
  • Soul: each soul log variant has a chance of 0.25 and 2 to 4 rolls. Sticks have a chance of 0.2 and the sapling has a chance of 0.01.[14]

Each of these recipes only loads if its sapling item exists in the pack.[12][13][14]

Special soil and slow crops

The longest grower in the files shown here is the Mystical Agriculture ignitium seed, at 4,800 growth ticks. It doesn't use dirt. It needs the ignitium_block soil category, and the pack adds a soil recipe that puts the Cataclysm ignitium block in that category with a growth modifier of 1.66.[8][9]

The harvest drops Ignitium Essence with a chance of 1.0. There is a chance of 0.01 of getting the seeds back and a chance of 0.01 of Fertilized Essence.[8]

Tip: Match the soil to the seed. The ignitium crop is set to the ignitium_block category, which the ignitium block soil provides, while the crops above are set to the dirt category.[5][8][9][12]

Unverified The pack ships many more Botany Pots crop files under kubejs/data/botanypots/recipes (for example environmental crops such as cherry and pine), and the sources here do not show their growth times, soils or drops. Check those data files in the pack for the details.

How does Botany Pots work with other mods?

3 parts

In this pack, Botany Pots connects to other mods through crop data files the pack ships, and through changed upgrade recipes for the tiered pots. Here is what the sources show.[3][5][8]

Elite pot upgrades

The pack changed the crafting recipes for the Elite Botany Pot and the Elite Hopper Botany Pot. You can make the elite hopper pot from a plain Botany Pot, or by upgrading a Hopper Botany Pot directly. Here are the exact in-pack recipes.[3]

Actually Additions crops

The pack adds three Actually Additions crops to the pot. All three use the dirt soil category and take 1,200 ticks to grow. Each one also has a 0.01 chance to give its seed back.[5][6][7]

Mystical Agriculture

Botany Pots lists Mystical Agriculture among the mods it supports, and the pack ships its own recipe for the ignitium crop. Ignitium Seeds need the "ignitium_block" soil category and take 4,800 ticks to grow. They always drop Ignitium Essence. They also have a 0.01 chance each to drop the seeds again or Fertilized Essence.[1][8]

Unverified The soil that matches the ignitium_block category is defined in kubejs/data/botanypots/recipes/cataclysm/soil/ignitium_block.json, which the sources here do not show.

What changed in Botany Pots between versions?

1 part

Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2 ships Botany Pots 13.0.0. It was first included in pack version 0.0.45.4 or earlier. I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so I can't tell you how it changed between pack releases.[15]

Later mod releases (not in this pack)

The mod's own changelogs I have cover 13.0.41 to 13.0.43. Those builds come after the 13.0.0 build this pack uses, so don't assume these changes are in your game. They're listed so you know what the mod fixed later.[15][16][17][18]

  • 13.0.41: all colored pot variants were removed from the JEI catalyst list.[18]
  • 13.0.42: fixed some crops never rendering their last state in the pots.[17]
  • 13.0.43: fixed issues when encoding non-ascii characters in language files, optimized the GUI background textures, and removed deprecated build dependencies.[16]
