What is Applied Energistics 2?

1 part

Applied Energistics 2, or AE2, is the mod that replaces your wall of chests with a compact digital storage network. Items live in storage cells inside a network of connected devices, and you get at them through terminals. It's also built to work with the other mods in a pack, so it can automate their crafting chains too.[1][2]

Autocrafting is the big draw. You encode patterns, and the system can craft an item and all its prerequisites on demand, or keep chosen items in stock. The mod also adds a channel system that limits how many devices a single cable can carry, so you'll want to plan your builds. Spatial storage can store a whole region of the world in a cell.[1][2][3]

This one is for you if you love automation and tidy, large-scale base logistics. It has real depth and takes some out-of-the-box thinking to get used to, but it pays off.[1][4]

This pack includes version 19.2.14 of the mod.[5]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack gives AE2 its own quest chapter, and it follows the natural build order. It starts with a quest for the Charger and Inscriber (a quest in "?"), then moves to Flawless Budding Certus Quartz (a quest in "?"). From there it branches into Fluix, the inscriber presses and the energy acceptor.[6]

The processors come next (a quest in "?"), followed by the ME Terminal and ME Crafting Terminal (a quest in "?"), then the ME Controller (a quest in "?"). After that the chapter covers the ME Drive and ME Chest, storage components, buses, pattern encoding, the Molecular Assembler and crafting storage. A separate branch leads through the Spatial IO Port and Spatial Pylon to spatial cells.[6]

If you want the mod's own starting advice, the in-game guide says to get processors made with the inscriber presses, then build a very basic ME system around a drive, a terminal and a few storage cells. Storage cells come in 5 tiers.[4]

Unverified The mod's own guide starts from finding a meteorite and mining certus quartz and the inscriber presses from it. The sources don't confirm how you obtain these materials in this pack, so check the quests and recipes in-game. This site does hold All the Mods 10: To the Sky's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you get started with Applied Energistics 2?

5 parts

Applied Energistics 2 starts with a few raw materials, then a handful of machines, then your first storage system. This is the order I'd follow, and it matches how the pack's quest line is laid out.[4][6]

Charger and Inscriber

The quest book asks for a Charger and an Inscriber together a quest in "?". You need the charger because it makes Charged Certus Quartz Crystal, which you use for Fluix and for repairing budding blocks. The inscriber turns presses into processors later.[4][6][7]

Certus quartz and the growth accelerator

Certus quartz buds sprout from budding certus blocks, much like amethyst. On its own that is very slow, so the mod's guide says to build a few Growth Accelerator blocks next to the budding block as your first priority. The quest line also asks for Flawless Budding Certus Quartz a quest in "?". A flawless block will not degrade and generates certus infinitely.[4][6]

Watch out: Do not break any flawless budding certus block. Even with silk touch it degrades to flawed budding certus, and it is impossible to repair it back to flawless.[4]

The accelerator needs power. The guide suggests an Energy Acceptor a quest in "?", or a Wooden Crank on the end of the accelerator if you can't afford one yet.[4][6]

Fluix

Your first ME storage

ME storage keeps items inside storage cells. A cell only works once it sits in an ME Chest or an ME Drive. The chest is limited, so the drive plus a network is where AE2 really pays off. The quests go through a terminal a quest in "?", then the ME Controller a quest in "?", then the chest and drive a quest in "?".[4][6]

How does Applied Energistics 2 work?

9 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

AE2 is built around one idea: your whole base's storage, crafting and logistics live on a single connected network. If you understand how that network passes channels, power and items, everything else in the mod gets much easier. Here's how it all works, as far as the guide sources explain it.[1][9]

Networks and connections

A network is a group of devices linked by blocks that can pass channels, like cables or full-block machines and devices. Where a device physically sits doesn't matter. All that matters is which network it's connected to.[9]

A quantum bridge acts like a wireless dense cable, so both ends are on one network. Cable color doesn't split networks either, apart from cables of different colors refusing to connect to each other. Uncolored fluix cables connect to every color.[9]

Full-block devices can pass a connection straight through them, which catches people out when they try to build a separate network. Right-clicking a pattern provider with a wrench makes it directional, so it won't pass channels through one side.[9]

Channels

Devices that use networked storage or other network services need a channel. Standard cables and most machines pass up to 8 channels, and dense cables pass up to 32. The only other things that carry 32 are the ME P2P Tunnel and the Quantum Network Bridge. Level emitters are the notable device that usually doesn't need a channel.[10][11]

With a controller, channels take the shortest path through adjacent machines to the nearest normal cable, then to the nearest dense cable, then to the controller. If that shortest path is already full, some devices won't get a channel even though other cables sit empty.[10]

  • Build your network like a tree: dense cables branching from the controller, regular cables branching from those, and devices in clusters of 8 or fewer on the regular cables.[10]
  • Keep loops and ambiguous channel paths to a minimum, and use smart cables to see how channels are being used and routed.[10]
  • A network without a controller is ad-hoc and supports up to 8 channel-using devices. Go past 8 and those devices shut down until you remove some or add a controller.[10]
  • Each node a channel traverses costs 1/128 ae/t, so adding a controller to a large network can actually lower power use by changing how channels are allocated.[10]

Unverified AE2 has a configurable channel mode with an operator command, but the pack's config files weren't available, so whether this pack changes it is unconfirmed.

Energy

A network has one shared pool of energy. Devices pull from it directly, and sources like vibration chambers, energy acceptors and controllers add to it. There are no transfer-rate limits inside the network, only your storage. That's why the guide suggests treating an AE2 network as a single large multiblock machine when you plan your base's power.[12]

AE2 converts other energy into its own unit, AE, and the conversion is one-way. On Forge, 2 FE equals 1 AE. Energy acceptors and controller faces do the converting, but controller faces are usually better spent on channels.[12]

A network can't take in or use more energy in one tick than it can store. A tiny network that tries to import a whole inventory of cobblestone at once can run out of energy and reboot. The fix is energy cells.[12]

  • Every cable, machine or part adds a built-in buffer of 25 AE.[12]
  • A controller holds 8,000 AE internally.[12]
  • One Energy Cell holds 200k AE, which the guide says is enough for most setups.[12]
  • The Dense Energy Cell holds 1.6M AE. Use it to run off stored power or to cover the huge instant draw of large spatial storage setups.[12]

Import, export and storage priority

Network storage is where a network's contents live, usually storage cells or whatever inventory a storage bus points at. Import busses push things into it and export busses pull things out. Interfaces do both, and terminals do both whenever you insert or take items. Storage busses are the odd one out. They make the inventory they point at act as network storage, so other devices push to or pull from them.[13]

Priority decides where things go. Incoming items go to the highest-priority storage first. If two storages tie, the one that already holds the item wins. Items being removed come from the lowest-priority storage first. Over time, high-priority storage fills up and low-priority storage empties.[13][14]

Storage cells: bytes and types

Cells are limited by bytes (total amount) and types (how many different things). Every item costs 1 bit, so 8 items make 1 byte. A full stack of 64 takes 8 bytes however it stacks outside the network. For fluids it's 8 buckets per byte. Each type also costs some bytes up front.[15]

Every cell tier holds 63 types, so a bigger cell isn't automatically better. A 1k cell stores 1,024 bytes and a 256k cell stores 262,144 bytes. A 1k cell holding a single type can store 8,128 items, but with all 63 types in use that drops to 4,160. Unstackable items with unique damage or enchantments each count as their own type, so filter mob-farm armor and tools out before they reach your system.[15][16]

Autocrafting

Autocrafting needs three things: something sending a crafting request, a crafting CPU, and a pattern provider. A request can come from you in a terminal, or from an export bus or interface with a crafting card. The system works out the ingredients and the prerequisite steps and stores them in the chosen crafting CPU. The provider then pushes ingredients to adjacent inventories.[3]

With a crafting pattern, the provider pushes to a molecular assembler. With a processing pattern, it pushes to any machine or setup you like. The craft's result must come back into the network through an import bus, an interface, or a pattern provider. Piping it into a chest with a storage bus on it doesn't count, because an item has to actually enter the system.[3]

Processing patterns are the flexible ones. The system only cares that the promised result eventually arrives, so you can feed whole factory chains with them. A pattern can also ask for several items per operation, like 8 cobblestone for 8 stone, and identical patterns on multiple providers run in parallel.[3]

The autocrafting algorithm can't handle recursive recipes, such as a duplication recipe where 1 redstone dust becomes 2. The workaround is the most general form of pattern: an interface with a crafting card set to emit a redstone signal. That signal can switch on a farm or a duplicating machine and tells the system the item will show up later. The crafting card is made like this:[3]

Crafting CardMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: ae2:materials/cardcrafting

Put the Crafting Card in an interface or export bus so it can request crafts.

Subnetworks

A subnet is simply a separate network. People use them to control which devices can reach which storage, and to save channels on the main network. For example, an import bus on a pipe-style subnet must not be connected to your main storage, or it will dump items into your cells instead of the destination inventory. A pattern provider can also output to an interface that feeds several storage busses on several machines, using 1 channel instead of one per machine.[17]

The most common mistake is a jumble of devices that still connects to the main network through some full-block device. Check your connections with a network tool.[9][17]

Spatial IO

Spatial IO swaps a defined volume of the world with an identically sized volume in the spatial storage dimension. You put a spatial cell in the IO port and give the port a redstone pulse. The port shows the energy required, which can be large and is used instantly, so have enough energy cells ready.[18]

  • Pylons define the volume. It's the bounding box of the outside of the pylons, shrunk by 1 block in every direction. The minimum is 3x3x3, which gives a 1x1x1 volume.[18]
  • All pylons must be on the same network and inside the outer bounding box. Each pylon must be at least 2 blocks long. Only one spatial IO setup is allowed per network, so a subnet is recommended.[18]
  • A cell's dimensions are fixed permanently the first time it's used, and they can't be rotated. The IO port won't run if the cell's dimensions don't match the defined volume.[18]
  • Minimal pylon setups around large volumes are very inefficient and may need billions of AE.[18]
Watch out: Any entity in the defined volume, including you, gets carried along. If you have no way out, you'll be trapped in the spatial storage dimension.[18]

Certus growth

Certus quartz buds grow on budding certus blocks, which you first find in meteorites. A fully grown cluster drops four Certus Quartz Crystal, and fortune increases that. A bud that isn't finished drops one certus quartz dust, and fortune doesn't change it. Each time a bud grows a stage, the budding block can degrade by one tier, and the tiers run Flawless, Flawed, Chipped, Damaged.[19][20]

You can repair a budding block, or make a new one, by throwing it (or a certus quartz block) into water with a Charged Certus Quartz Crystal. Flawless budding blocks never degrade, but you can't craft them or move them with a pickaxe, even with silk touch. Growth accelerators placed next to a budding block massively speed up growth. The guide says to build a few of them first.[19][20]

How do you progress through Applied Energistics 2?

7 parts

The AE2 quest chapter in this pack is a tree, not a straight line. Most of it is "craft this item" quests, so the chapter doubles as a build order. Below I follow it in the order I'd actually tackle it, with the in-pack recipes for the key steps.[6]

Tier 1: Charger, Inscriber and quartz

Everything starts with a quest in "?", which asks for a Charger and an Inscriber. It unlocks a quest in "?", which asks for Flawless Budding Certus Quartz. Three quests branch off that one: power, fluix and the presses.[6]

Tier 2: Processors, terminals and the controller

Once you have the presses, a quest in "?" asks for the Logic Processor, Calculation Processor and Engineering Processor. These processors feed almost everything after this point. a quest in "?" then asks for an ME Terminal and an ME Crafting Terminal.[6][8]

The next big milestone is a quest in "?", the ME Controller. After it you can start on wireless access: a quest in "?" asks for an ME Wireless Access Point and a Wireless Booster, and a quest in "?" asks for the wireless terminals.[6]

Tier 3: Storage

a quest in "?" asks for an ME Chest and an ME Drive. It opens the storage side of the tree, including the Cell Workbench, the ME IO Port and the first storage component.[6]

Tier 4: Autocrafting

The crafting line branches off the pattern access terminal. a quest in "?" asks for the ME Pattern Access Terminal. a quest in "?" follows with the ME Pattern Encoding Terminal and Blank Pattern, and a quest in "?" asks for the Molecular Assembler.[6]

Crafting CPUs come from a quest in "?", which accepts any crafting storage from 1k Crafting Storage up to 256k Crafting Storage. After it come a quest in "?" for the Crafting Co-Processing Unit and a quest in "?" for the Crafting Monitor.[6]

Upgrade cards

Cards are spread across the tree and unlock as you reach the matching device. a quest in "?" gives the Capacity Card after the storage bus, and the fuzzy and inverter cards follow in a quest in "?". a quest in "?" has the Redstone Card, then a quest in "?" has the Crafting Card. a quest in "?" has the Acceleration Card, and the Equal Distribution Card and Overflow Destruction Card come after the Cell Workbench.[6]

Cards are made from either a basic or an advanced card base.[21]

Endgame: Matter, Quantum and Spatial

a quest in "?" asks for the Matter Condenser and Matter Ball. It leads to a quest in "?" (Singularity, Ender Dust, Tiny TNT) and then to a quest in "?", which asks for the ME Quantum Ring, the ME Quantum Link Chamber and a Quantum Entangled Singularity.[6]

The spatial line is separate: a quest in "?" asks for the Spatial IO Port and a quest in "?" for the Spatial Pylon. After the pylon you pick between the Spatial Anchor (a quest in "?") and the spatial storage cells (a quest in "?").[6]

How does Applied Energistics 2 work with other mods?

3 parts

AE2 is the hub that a lot of add-ons plug into in this pack. The cross-mod links below come from in-pack recipes. The AE2 quest chapters only use AE2 items, so the integration is recipe-driven rather than quest-driven.[6][8][22]

Advanced AE: quantum crafting

Advanced AE extends AE2 autocrafting with a quantum computer. The Quantum Computer Core and Quantum Crafter are crafted with parts from AE2, such as the Singularity, plus Advanced AE parts like the Shattered Singularity. The Quantum Crafting Unit also needs the Concurrent Processor from ExtendedAE, and the pack changed that recipe from the mod's default.[8]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Applied Energistics 2?

8 parts

Applied Energistics 2 shows up in two quest chapters in this pack: a big one called applied_energistics_2 and a small one called basic_tools. The quests are untitled in the pack files, so I'll point to each one by its quest ref and tell you what it asks you to have.[6][22]

Where a quest lists several items joined by "or", any one of them is enough. A few quests also wait on quests that aren't described in my sources, so I can't tell you where those branches begin.[6][22]

Getting started: power, crystals and processors

  1. a quest in "?" asks for the Charger and the Inscriber.[6]
  2. a quest in "?" follows it and asks for Flawless Budding Certus Quartz. This unlocks three quests at once.[6]
  3. a quest in "?" wants Fluix Dust and Fluix Crystal.[6]
  4. a quest in "?" wants the four presses: Inscriber Calculation Press, Inscriber Engineering Press, Inscriber Logic Press and Inscriber Silicon Press.[6]
  5. a quest in "?" then asks for the three processors: Logic Processor, Calculation Processor and Engineering Processor.[6]
  6. a quest in "?" asks for the Energy Acceptor. After it, a quest in "?" wants an Energy Cell and a Dense Energy Cell, and a quest in "?" finishes the line with the Energy Card.[6]

Building the network

  1. a quest in "?" asks for the ME Terminal and the ME Crafting Terminal.[6]
  2. a quest in "?" asks for the ME Controller. It also waits on a quest I can't see.[6]
  3. a quest in "?" asks for the Network Tool.[6]
  4. a quest in "?" wants the ME Wireless Access Point and the Wireless Booster. a quest in "?" follows with the Wireless Terminal and the Wireless Crafting Terminal.[6]
  5. a quest in "?" asks for the ME Chest and the ME Drive. It opens the storage branch below.[6]
  6. a quest in "?" is a side quest for the Color Applicator.[6]

Storage cells and the cell workbench

Autocrafting and logic

Buses and cards

These five quests all hang off the same earlier quest: a quest in "?" (ME Import Bus), a quest in "?" (ME Export Bus), a quest in "?" (ME Storage Bus), a quest in "?" (ME P2P Tunnel) and a quest in "?" (Quartz Fiber).[6]

Spatial storage

a quest in "?" asks for the Spatial IO Port, then a quest in "?" asks for the Spatial Pylon. Two quests branch from the pylon: a quest in "?" wants the Spatial Anchor, and a quest in "?" wants a spatial storage cell in any of the three sizes: 2³ Spatial Storage Cell, 16³ Spatial Storage Cell or 128³ Spatial Storage Cell.[6]

Matter, singularities and quantum

a quest in "?" asks for the Matter Condenser and Matter Ball. a quest in "?" follows with Singularity, Ender Dust and Tiny TNT, and a quest in "?" finishes the line with ME Quantum Ring, ME Quantum Link Chamber and Quantum Entangled Singularity. Separately, a quest in "?" asks for the Charged Staff, Entropy Manipulator and Matter Cannon.[6]

The basic_tools chapter

This chapter holds three tool quests that all unlock after the same earlier quest. a quest in "?" asks for the Fluix Sword. a quest in "?" accepts any one of the Fluix Pickaxe, Certus Quartz Pickaxe or Nether Quartz Pickaxe. a quest in "?" accepts either the Nether Quartz Sword or the Certus Quartz Sword.[22]

Which Applied Energistics 2 config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Most of what makes Applied Energistics 2 feel the way it does comes from its networking and channel system. Devices on the same network can talk to each other, and channels limit how many devices can connect through a single cable. That limit is what turns AE2 builds into a planning puzzle, so it's the mechanic you'll feel most as you expand your network.[1]

Unverified This pack's config files for Applied Energistics 2 weren't available when this section was written. So we can't confirm how the pack sets any option, including the channel mode, power usage, or spatial storage settings, or whether any of them differ from the mod's defaults. Until that's checked, assume nothing has changed and test in-game before you plan a big network around a particular setting.

What changed in Applied Energistics 2 between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 ships Applied Energistics 2 version 19.2.14. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier, so it's part of the pack from the start.[5]

Changes in 19.2.14

This is the version you're running in 1.0.2. Its changelog lists two fixes:[5][24]

  • Inverted filter behavior is fixed for resource types that aren't listed in the filter.[24]
  • The UIs of parts now close when those parts are removed from the world.[24]

Both are bug fixes from the mod's own changelog. They don't add new content or change any recipes.[24]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Applied Energistics 2 were available, so any changes the pack itself made to the mod across its releases are unconfirmed.
