What is Creeper Overhaul?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.2 guide

Creeper Overhaul replaces the vanilla creeper with a variety of biome-specific creeper types. Some of them are friendlier than others, so don't assume every new creeper is out to blow up your base.[1]

This pack ships version 4.0.6 of the mod, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 0.32 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

There's no quest chapter or group for Creeper Overhaul in this pack's quest book, so nothing comes before or after it there. It isn't on the ATM Star path either, which means you can skip it entirely if you're only chasing that goal.[2]

The sources I have don't show any pack-specific changes to this mod, so I won't describe any custom recipes or values for it.[2]

How do you get started with Creeper Overhaul?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: Creeper Overhaul doesn't need any crafting to get going. The mod replaces the vanilla creeper with a variety of biome-specific creeper types, and some of them are friendlier than others. So your first step is simply to explore and see which creepers show up where you are.[1]

Tip: Because the creepers are tied to biomes, a different biome can mean a different creeper. Treat any creeper you haven't met yet with the same caution you'd give a vanilla one until you know how it behaves.[1]

What to make first

There is no crafting order to follow for this mod. I couldn't find any in-pack recipes that produce its items, and no quests in this pack involve it, so there's nothing for me to point you to with a recipe block.[1]

Unverified Whether any Creeper Overhaul creeper drops special items, how each creeper type behaves, and which biome spawns which type are not covered by the available sources, so I can't confirm them for this pack.

How does Creeper Overhaul work?

4 parts

This mod works differently from most in a modpack. The sources describe Creeper Overhaul as a mob mod that replaces the vanilla creeper with a variety of biome-specific creeper types, some friendlier than others. Nothing in them mentions machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation, so there are no systems of that kind to explain here.[1]

The creeper types

Each creeper type has its own entity and its own spawn egg. These are the types in the pack's language data:[3]

  • Badlands, Bamboo, Beach and Birch creepers[3]
  • Cave, Dark Oak, Desert and Dripstone creepers[3]
  • Hills, Jungle, Mushroom and Ocean creepers[3]
  • Savannah, Snowy, Spruce and Swamp creepers[3]

If you want to study a particular type up close, the spawn eggs are named per type, for example the Badlands Creeper Spawn Egg and the Ocean Creeper Spawn Egg. The sources don't say how you get them.[3]

Sounds and special behaviour

The subtitles show that the creepers use several sound sets: ocean, plant, sand, stone and wood. Most have the same events: death, hurt, hit, hissing as the creeper primes, and the explosion. The sources don't say which creeper uses which set.[3]

The ocean set is the odd one out. Its subtitles cover an Ocean Creeper inflating and deflating, which hints at a behaviour the other sets don't have. The sources don't explain exactly when or why it happens, so test it in game.[3]

Other things in the mod

  • A Tiny Cactus block, and a potted version of it.[3]
  • A Cosmetics screen with a login option for Creeper Overhaul. Previewing cosmetics only works while you are in a world.[3]

How the pack uses the mod

The pack's own script for the Deoxys crystal summoning ritual borrows a sound from this mod. When the fake meteors land around the altar, and again when the crystal appears, it plays the plant creeper explosion sound. So if you hear a creeper blast during that ritual, that's why.[4]

The pack has no config files for this mod, so there are no options to tweak.[4]

How do you progress through Creeper Overhaul?

1 part

Creeper Overhaul doesn't have a tier ladder in this pack that I can show you. The only progression content I can confirm that touches the mod is a small cosmetic detail in the Deoxys crystal ritual, which is run by a pack script through the Summoning Rituals altar.[4]

The Deoxys crystal ritual

To start this ritual, the script checks that all four of your armor pieces have a radiation shielding unit module installed. If they don't, the ritual is cancelled and you get a warning message. It also checks the Eternal Starlight meteor shower timer. If a shower is still pending, the ritual is cancelled and you're shown a countdown forecast instead.[4]

Once the ritual is running, meteor particles and screen shake play around the altar for nearby players within 16 blocks. Each impact plays the Creeper Overhaul sound event creeperoverhaul:entity.plant.creeper.explosion as its explosion sound. When the ritual completes, the script places the allthemons:deoxys_crystal block and sets fire to air blocks around it.[4]

Tip: The Creeper Overhaul part here is only the explosion sound. The gates for this ritual are the radiation shielding armor modules and the meteor shower timing, not anything from the creeper mod.[4]
