What is Refined Types?

2 parts

Refined Types is an addon for Refined Storage. It lets Refined Storage components handle FE (energy), Source and Souls as resources, so you can store them, transfer them, view them and autocrafting can use them. It's for you if you're already building a Refined Storage network and want your power, Source and souls in the same system as your items.[1]

The pack ships Refined Types 1.21.1-0.3.2. The mod's project page also lists Botania mana as a planned resource type, so don't expect it to work yet.[1][2]

What it adds to the pack

The registry entries we can confirm are storage parts, one family per resource. Each family climbs through several capacity tiers and ends in an infinite version. Energy goes from 64K Energy Storage Part to Infinite Energy Storage Part. Source goes from 64B Source Storage Part to Infinite Source Storage Part. Souls go from 1K Soul Storage Part to Infinite Soul Storage Part.[3]

Where it fits in progression

You'll meet this mod in the logistics storage quest chapter. Three quests cover the families, and each one accepts any part from its family: "Energy Storage Parts" quest for energy, a quest in "Storage" for Source and "Soul Storage Parts" quest for souls. The energy and Source quests both unlock after the same earlier quest, while the souls quest unlocks after a different one.[3]

The infinite energy part also turns up in the creative chapter, in "Creative Controller" quest. That quest asks for it together with a Controller, the Refined Storage processors and an Json Singularity. It's a late, endgame-style target rather than something to rush for.[4]

Unverified The sources don't confirm whether Ars Nouveau and Industrial Foregoing Souls are in this pack. The project page says Source and Souls support relies on those mods, so check before planning around the Source and Soul parts. The sources also show no pack-specific changes to this mod's recipes or configs.

How do you get started with Refined Types?

5 parts

Refined Types is a Refined Storage addon. It lets your storage network hold FE, Source from Ars Nouveau and Souls from Industrial Foregoing Souls. Everything starts with a Storage Part, so that's the first thing to make for whichever resource you care about.[1]

The Refined Types recipes shown here are changed by the pack, so follow them rather than the mod's own defaults.[5]

Step 1: Pick a resource and craft its first part

Each resource has its own line of parts, and the entry-level part has its own recipe. Start with the one that matches what you're collecting.[5]

Step 2: Turn the part into a disk and use it

A part on its own doesn't store anything. The mod's advancements point you to the next step: craft the matching Storage Disk and put it in your Disk Drive. I can't confirm the disk recipes from what I have, so check them in the recipe viewer in game.[6]

Step 3: Upgrade by tier

You don't have to start over to get more space. A disk or block can be upgraded to a higher tier by combining it with a Storage Part. In the pack, each part is crafted from the part one tier below it, so you climb one step at a time. Here is the first step up for Energy, as an example:[5][6]

Quests to follow

The Logistics storage chapter in the quest book has a quest for each line. They ask you to get any part from that resource's line, so crafting the first part counts. See "Soul Storage Parts" quest for Souls, a quest in "Storage" for Source and "Energy Storage Parts" quest for Energy.[3]

Tip: Energy disks can be drained by the Network Energizer, which uses stored Energy from Energy Disks in the network to keep it running. If you use one, keep that in mind before filling your disks with FE.[6]

How does Refined Types work?

6 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Refined Types is a Refined Storage addon. It lets Refined Storage components store, transfer, view and autocraft with extra resource types: FE (energy), Source from Ars Nouveau and Souls from Industrial Foregoing Souls. Mana from Botania is listed as planned, so don't count on it.[1]

Storage disks and blocks

Each resource type has its own storage disk. The mod's advancements tell you to craft an Energy, Soul or Source Storage Disk and put it in your Disk Drive. That is how you add the resource to your network.[7]

There are also storage blocks for each type, built around a Machine Casing. Disks and blocks can be upgraded to a higher tier by combining them with a Storage Part of the matching type.[7]

If a disk or block is empty, use it while holding it to get its parts back. A disk returns its Storage Part. A block returns the Storage Part and the Machine Casing.[7]

Tip: You can only take a disk or block apart when it's empty, so drain it first.[7]

Keeping the network powered

The Network Energizer automatically consumes stored energy from Energy Disks inside the network to keep that network running. It has a redstone mode. While the device is inactive, the storage network does not consume any energy from Energy Disks to sustain it.[7]

Usage values per tier

Every storage block tier has its own usage option, for example energyStorageBlock.64KEnergyUsage, with matching options for Source and Soul blocks. Each option is described as the energy (or source) used by that block. The pack leaves all of these at the mod defaults, and the range for each is 0 up to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807.[7][8]

Energy blocks go from 2 for the 64K block, through 4 for 256K, 6 for 1024K, 8 for 8192K, 10 for 65536K, 12 for 262144K and 14 for 1048576K, up to 16 for the 8388608K block.[7][8][9]

Source blocks follow the same curve. The 64B block uses 2 and the 8388608B block uses 16.[7][8]

Soul blocks run from 2 for the 1K block, through 4 for 8K, 6 for 64K, 8 for 512K, 10 for 4096K, 12 for 32768K and 14 for 262144K, up to 16 for the 2097152K block.[7][8][9]

Infinite and creative variants

Infinite Energy, Soul and Source disks and blocks store an unlimited amount of their resource. Their usage setting is 18 for all of these types in the pack. Creative versions also exist and come with an infinite amount already stored.[7][8]

Crafting the blocks

The pack changes the recipes for the Refined Types storage blocks, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. Here are the in-pack recipes for 64K Energy Storage Block, 64B Source Storage Block and 1K Soul Storage Block. The other tiers have their own recipes in the same format.[9]

Automation tip for souls

Tip: If you export souls to a connected soul pipe, put a Regulator Upgrade in the exporter. Without it, the exporter can dump all of your souls into the pipe.[7]

How do you progress through Refined Types?

5 parts

Refined Types adds three upgrade lines of storage for Refined Storage: Soul, Source and Energy. Each line is a ladder of Storage Parts, and each part can be turned into a matching Storage Block. In this pack the recipes for all of these parts and blocks are changed from the mod's defaults, so don't rely on what you remember from other packs.[3][5]

How the quests track it

The pack's storage chapter has one quest per line. Each one is completed by holding any part of its line, from the lowest tier up to the infinite one. The three quests are untitled in the quest files, so here is which is which:[3]

The Source and Energy quests both unlock after the same earlier quest. The Soul quest unlocks after a different one.[3]

Tier 1: the entry parts

Each line has an entry part, and everything above it is an upgrade of the previous tier's part. The Soul line starts at 1K Soul Storage Part, the Source line at 64B Source Storage Part and the Energy line at 64K Energy Storage Part. Their recipes are shown below.[5]

Climbing the ladder

After the entry part, every step takes the previous tier's part and upgrades it. The recipes also use Refined Storage processors, and the processor grade goes up as you climb. The three lines follow these chains:[3][5]

  1. Soul: 1K Soul Storage Part, then 8K Soul Storage Part, 64K Soul Storage Part, 512K Soul Storage Part, 4096K Soul Storage Part, 32768K Soul Storage Part, 262144K Soul Storage Part and 2097152K Soul Storage Part.[5]
  2. Source: 64B Source Storage Part, then 256B Source Storage Part, 1024B Source Storage Part, 8192B Source Storage Part, 65536B Source Storage Part, 262144B Source Storage Part, 1048576B Source Storage Part and 8388608B Source Storage Part.[5]
  3. Energy: 64K Energy Storage Part, then 256K Energy Storage Part, 1024K Energy Storage Part, 8192K Energy Storage Part, 65536K Energy Storage Part, 262144K Energy Storage Part, 1048576K Energy Storage Part and 8388608K Energy Storage Part.[5]

Tip: Each upgrade consumes the previous tier's part. Keep the lower parts you craft instead of storing or selling them, because you'll need them for the next step up.[5]

Turning parts into blocks

Every part has a matching block, such as 64K Soul Storage Block for the 64K Soul part. Block recipes use the same pattern across tiers: the part, a Refined Storage Machine Casing and some redstone. Here is the Energy line's version for one tier, followed by a Soul block:[5]

The infinite tier

Each line ends in an infinite part, and the quest for each line accepts it as a task item. The pack's creative chapter also has "Creative Controller" quest, whose tasks include the Infinite Energy Storage Part, alongside several Refined Storage items and a singularity item.[3][4]

How does Refined Types work with other mods?

5 parts

Refined Types is a Refined Storage addon. It adds FE, Source and Souls as storage types, with Source tied to Ars Nouveau and Souls tied to Industrial Foregoing Souls. Nearly everything it adds is built on Refined Storage components, and the pack adds a few other mods on top.[1]

Refined Storage

Storage blocks use a Machine Casing, and disks are made by combining a Storage Housing with the matching part. The pack changed almost all of these recipes. The exceptions are several of the energy disk recipes, which are still the mod's own.[5]

  • Processors gate the part tiers. Basic Processor shows up in the 256B Source and 256K Energy parts, and Improved Processor in the 1024B Source and 1024K Energy parts.[5]
  • Advanced Processor is used from the 262144B Source and 262144K Energy parts upward, and in the Soul parts from the 512K tier upward.[5]
  • The Network Energizer is crafted from a Refined Storage Interface and a copper storage block, and the pack changed this recipe too.[5]

Ars Nouveau

The way into Source storage runs through Ars Nouveau. The smallest Source part needs Magebloom Fiber, and the 256B Source part is then upgraded from it.[5]

Material tiers

Higher part tiers also ask for metal and gem storage blocks, and the pack picks them by tier.[5]

  • Source parts at 256B and 1024B use a gold storage block. At 262144B and 1048576B they use an emerald storage block.[5]
  • Energy parts at 256K and 1024K use copper and gold storage blocks. At 262144K and 1048576K they use copper and emerald storage blocks.[5]
  • Soul parts at 512K and 4096K use a diamond storage block. At 32768K and 262144K they use an emerald storage block, and the 2097152K part uses a netherite storage block.[5]

Infinite parts: Avaritia and MFFS

The infinite Energy, Soul and Source parts are not normal crafting recipes. The pack adds a World Engine custom machine recipe for each one, built on the top finite part of that type. They bring in Crystal Matrix Ingot from Avaritia and Fortron Fluid from MFFS, and the recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack inputs.[5]

Quests

Three quests in the storage chapter ("Soul Storage Parts" quest, a quest in "Storage" and "Energy Storage Parts" quest) each accept any part from one family, running up to the infinite part: Soul, Source and Energy. These tasks only involve Refined Types items.[3]

The creative chapter has one quest that does cross mods, "Creative Controller" quest. Its tasks are a Refined Storage controller, the three processor tiers, Avaritia's JSON singularity and the Infinite Energy Storage Part.[3][4]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Refined Types?

2 parts

Refined Types shows up in two quest chapters in the pack: the logistics storage chapter and the creative chapter. Between them there are four quests that ask for the mod's storage parts.[3][4]

Logistics storage chapter

This chapter has three Refined Types quests, one each for Soul, Source and Energy storage parts. Each one is satisfied by handing in any one item from its list, so you don't need every tier. Any part from the list counts, up to the infinite version.[3]

On order, each of these quests unlocks only after an earlier quest is done. The Source and Energy quests share the same prerequisite, so they open at the same time. The Soul quest hangs off a different one. Which chapter those prerequisites live in isn't shown in the sources, so check your quest book.[3]

Tip: Because any listed part completes these quests, the lowest tier of each line is enough to tick them off.[3]

Creative chapter

Quest "Creative Controller" quest in the creative chapter is a bigger ask. It has several tasks: a Controller, a Basic Processor, an Improved Processor, an Advanced Processor, an Json Singularity, and an Infinite Energy Storage Part. This quest also unlocks only after an earlier creative-chapter quest is completed.[4]

That means the Infinite Energy Storage Part is the one Refined Types item that appears in both chapters.[3][4]

Which Refined Types config options matter?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Good news: there's very little to tweak here, and the pack hasn't touched any of it. Everything in Refined Types that you can configure lives in one file, refinedtypes-common.toml, with options like energyStorageBlock.64KEnergyUsage. Every value in this pack matches the mod default, so nothing was changed from the mod's own numbers.[8]

The file has one usage option for each tier of the energy, soul and source storage blocks. That fits what the mod adds: Refined Storage support for FE, Source (Ars Nouveau) and Souls (Industrial Foregoing Souls). Every option accepts a value from 0 up to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807.[1][8]

Energy storage blocks

The lowest energy tier is set to 2 in energyStorageBlock.64KEnergyUsage. The value goes up tier by tier, as the list below shows.[8]

Soul storage blocks

The soul blocks have their own tier ladder. Its lowest tier is set to 2 in soulStorageBlock.1KEnergyUsage, and the rest follow below.[8]

Source storage blocks

Source blocks follow the same pattern as the energy ones. The lowest tier is set to 2 in sourceStorageBlock.64BSourceUsage.[8]

Tip: Since the pack runs every one of these at the mod default, you don't need to change anything to follow the rest of this guide. If you do edit a value yourself, keep it inside the 0 to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 range the file allows.[8]

What changed in Refined Types between versions?

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Refined Types 1.21.1-0.3.2, and the mod has been in the pack since FTB StoneBlock 4 1.1.1 or earlier. Here are the changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]

  • 0.3.2: Fixed the Network Energizer recipe being missing. This is the version your pack has.[2][10]
  • 0.3.0: Added creative disks, which are infinitely filled with the specific resource they hold.[11]
  • 0.2.9: Fixed energy, source and soul not being exported when fuzzy mode is on.[12]
  • 0.2.8: Fixed an issue where source could not be imported or exported through the interface.[13]

There are no pack changelog entries for this mod, so the list above only covers what the mod's own changelogs say.[2]
