What is Ars Elemental?
1 part
Ars Elemental is part of the pack's mod list, and this pack ships version 0.7.6.13 built for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modpack and not a recent addition.[1]
Where you meet it in the quests
The quest book shows where the mod fits in the pack. You won't need many of its items, but a few show up in important places. Ars Nouveau items appear next to Ars Elemental ones in several of those quests.[2][3][4]
- In the creative chapter, quest a quest in "?" asks for ars_elemental:anima_essence alongside Ars Nouveau's abjuration, conjuration, air, earth, fire, manipulation and water essences, plus a source gem block.[2]
- Also in the creative chapter, quest a quest in "?" asks for an Ars Nouveau archmage spell book, Mark of Mastery, and an Avaritia amethyst singularity.[2]
- In the bounty board chapter, quest a quest in "?" has Mark of Mastery as its task.[3]
- In the world engine tier 1 chapter, quest a quest in "?" accepts any one of five archwood saplings, and Flashing Archwood Sapling is one of them. The other four are Ars Nouveau saplings (blue, red, purple and green). The quest also asks for archwood planks.[4]
The Mark of Mastery is the one to watch. It appears in two different chapters, so it's worth keeping in mind as you plan your progression.[2][3]
Unverified This guide has no in-jar guidebook or platform description for Ars Elemental, so what its spells and mechanics do, and who it suits best, isn't confirmed here. The mod is also not on the ATM Star quest path.
How do you get started with Ars Elemental?
4 parts
Ars Elemental builds on Ars Nouveau, and its recipes lean on Ars Nouveau essences. The big early goal is the Mark of Mastery. The elemental focus and the elemental armor upgrades in this pack all use it, so here is the order I would tackle things in.[5]
Step 1: Get a Flashing Archwood Sapling
The Flashing Archwood Sapling is this mod's own archwood tree. A quest in the World Engine Tier 1 chapter, a quest in "?", accepts it as one of several archwood sapling options, and also asks for Archwood Planks. You can craft it from the other archwood saplings plus Air Essence.[4][5]
Crafting Shapeless
Cascading Archwood Sapling or Flourishing Archwood Sapling or Blazing Archwood Sapling or Vexing Archwood Sapling
Air Essence
Recipe id: ars_elemental:flashing_sapling
The pack also adds a crook recipe. Using a crook on Flashing Archwood Leaves gives you Flashpine and the sapling again.[5]
Crook (ftbstuff)
Recipe id: ftb:ftbstuff/crook/yellow_archwood_leaves
The sapling also has a Farming for Blockheads market recipe, if you would rather buy it.[5]
Market (farmingforblockheads)
Recipe id: farmingforblockheads:market/ars_elemental/yellow_archwood_sapling
Step 2: Make Anima Essence
ars_elemental:anima_essence is the mod's own essence, and the Mark of Mastery needs it. It is made by imbuement, not in a crafting grid.[5]
Imbuement (ars_nouveau)
Bone Meal
Golden Apple
Wither Skeleton Skull
- any source gem
Recipe id: ars_elemental:imbuement_anima_essence
Step 3: Craft the Mark of Mastery
This is the milestone item. You make it at the enchanting apparatus, and the mod's own advancement text describes it as combining the essences with the tribute.[5][6]
Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)
- Anima Essence
Abjuration Essence
Air Essence
Conjuration Essence
Earth Essence
Fire Essence
Manipulation Essence
Water Essence
Wilden Tribute
Recipe id: ars_elemental:mark_of_mastery
The quest book knows about it too. A quest in the bounty board chapter, a quest in "?", has the Mark of Mastery as its task. In the creative chapter, a quest in "?" lists it alongside the Archmage Spell Book and an Amethyst Singularity, and a quest in "?" asks for the Anima Essence along with the Ars Nouveau essences.[2][3]
Step 4: Spend it on a focus or armor
With a Mark of Mastery in hand, you can upgrade the Lesser Focus of Air into the Focus of Air. The armor upgrades, such as Aethermancer's Hat and Aquamancer's Hat, use the Mark as well.[5]
Wearing a full elemental armor set gives you a set bonus. The Air set absorbs some air-related damage as mana and greatly reduces fall damage. The Aqua set absorbs some water-related damage as mana and refills your air if you are about to drown.[6]
How does Ars Elemental work?
6 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.12 guide
In this pack, the sources show Ars Elemental working through Ars Nouveau's crafting stations, spell glyphs, familiars and rituals. This section covers the mechanics those sources explain.[7][8]
Unverified There is no config file for this mod in the pack and the sources here do not show any tunable values, so none are listed in this section.
Where things get crafted
Ars Elemental items use several crafting methods: the normal crafting grid, Ars Nouveau's imbuement, Ars Nouveau's enchanting apparatus, or a dedicated armor upgrade recipe type.[8]
- Crafting grid: the Advanced Spell Prism, the Trinkets Pouch, the Flashing Archwood wood blocks and the ritual items.[8]
- Imbuement: the Acceleration Prism Lens and the Air Infused Turret.[8]
- Enchanting apparatus: the Air Bangle, the Anima Bangle, the Focus of Air and the Slipstream Current Elevator.[8]
- Armor upgrade recipes: the Aethermancer's armor pieces, such as the Aethermancer's Hat, Aethermancer's Robes, Aethermancer's Leggings and Aethermancer's Boots.[8]

Marks, foci and armor
The in-game advancement for the Mark of Mastery says to combine the essences with the tribute. The Mark is then used in the air focus upgrade and in every Aethermancer's armor upgrade.[7][8]
Foci come in lesser and major grades. You first acquire a lesser focus, such as the Lesser Focus of Air, then upgrade it to the major focus. For air, that upgrade is an enchanting apparatus recipe.[7][8]
Each elemental armor set absorbs some damage of its element and converts it into mana. The air set also greatly reduces fall damage. The aqua set refills your air if you're about to drown. The earth set gives food deep underground if you're about to starve. The fire set instantly clears fire.[7]
Wearing a focus also changes some spells. Launch with Extend Time while you wear an air focus makes a mob levitate. Summon Steed gives you a dolphin with a water focus, a skeleton horse with a necromancy focus, or a strider with a fire focus.[7]
Familiars
You get a familiar by performing the Ritual of Binding near the matching creature. Each one boosts a spell school and can be fed for a short buff.[7]
- Flarecannon: Fire spell damage goes up by 2 and projectile-based spells cost 20% less. Feed it a Magma Cream for a short Fire Resistance buff.[7]
- Flashjack: Lightning spell damage goes up by 2 and movement-based spells cost 20% less. Feed it a Flashpine for a short Speed and Night Vision buff.[7]
- Siren: Water spell damage goes up by 2, and you get Dolphin Grace II while in water.[7]
Glyph behavior worth knowing
Ars Elemental adds spell glyphs that change how a spell travels or resolves. These are the ones the sources describe most clearly.[7]
- Arc projectile: it is affected by gravity, and every Pierce you apply makes it bounce once when it hits the ground.[7]
- Homing projectile: it seeks the nearest entity and acts like a classic projectile if there is no valid target. It only targets players if augmented with Sensitive.[7]
- Propagators: the arc and homing propagators convert the rest of the spell into that projectile type and fire it from where the spell lands.[7]
- Filters: the aerial, aquatic, fiery, insect, summon and undead filters stop the spell from resolving depending on the target. Each also has a "not" version that works the opposite way.[7]
- Life Link: damage you take is shared with the target and healing of the target is shared with you. Sensitive reverses the link's direction and Cut severs it.[7]
- Conjure Terrain: one Amplify places cobblestone and two place cobbled deepslate. Following it with Conjure Water places mud, and following it with Crush places sand.[7]
Archwood and rituals
The Flashing Archwood tree is Ars Elemental's own archwood type. Its sapling is a shapeless recipe that combines the Cascading, Flourishing, Vexing and Blazing Archwood Saplings with Air Essence. The tree gives the Flashing Archwood Log, which several ritual recipes use.[8]
Crafting Shapeless

Air Essence
Recipe id: ars_elemental:flashing_sapling
The pack has crafting recipes for these ritual items: Attraction, Detection, Repulsion, Fast Squirrels, Zapping, Conjure Island: Archwood Forest and Forestation - Archwood.[8]
Perks and enchantments
- Shock thread: damaging effects shock the target for a short time before the effect resolves, and it inflicts Static Charged at tier 3.[7]
- Spore thread: damaging effects poison the target or make it hungry for a short time before the effect resolves.[7]
- Summon thread: it reduces Summon Sickness by 10% per tier. From tier 2 it also slightly increases the damage dealt by summoned creatures.[7]
- Mirror Shield: this enchantment only goes on the Enchanter's Shield and gives a 25% chance per level to reflect a spell projectile while you block.[7]
- Soulbound: it keeps the enchanted item from being lost on death.[7]
How do you progress through Ars Elemental?
5 parts
Ars Elemental in this pack is a gated climb. You start with a special sapling, move on to Anima Essence, then craft the Mark of Mastery, which the elemental armor and focus upgrades need. The sources here do not define formal numbered tiers for the mod, so this is the path in the order the quests and recipes lead you through it.[2][4][5]
First: Flashing Archwood
The first Ars Elemental item the quests touch is the Flashing Archwood Sapling. In the world engine tier 1 chapter, a quest in "?" accepts any of the Ars Nouveau archwood saplings or this one, and also asks for archwood planks.[4]
You can craft the sapling by combining Air Essence with one sapling of each of the four Ars Nouveau archwood colours. The Farming for Blockheads market also offers it, and a crook recipe added by the pack turns Flashing Archwood Leaves into the sapling or Flashpine.[4][5]

The logs from this tree matter. Several rituals need Flashing Archwood Log, including Detection, Repulsion, Fast Squirrels and Zapping.[5]
Next: Anima Essence
ars_elemental:anima_essence is the mod's own essence, and it is made by imbuement. You need it for the Mark of Mastery. a quest in "?" in the creative chapter asks for the Ars Nouveau essences, the Anima Essence and a Source Gem Block.[2][5]

Then: Mark of Mastery
The Mark of Mastery is the key item of the mod. It is made at the enchanting apparatus from Anima Essence, the Ars Nouveau essences and a Wilden Tribute.[5]

- Anima Essence

The quests ask for it in two places. a quest in "?" in the creative chapter needs an Archmage Spell Book, the Mark of Mastery and an Amethyst Singularity. a quest in "?" in the bounty board chapter has the Mark of Mastery as its only task.[2][3]
What the Mark unlocks
With Marks of Mastery in hand, the elemental gear opens up. Each elemental armor piece is an upgrade of an Ars Nouveau armor piece, using a Mark of Mastery, the matching elemental essence and a netherite ingot. Each element has lines based on the Arcanist, Sorcerer and Battlemage armor. For air, the Arcanist line becomes Aethermancer's Boots and its siblings, the Sorcerer line becomes Olympian's Shoes and its siblings, and the Battlemage line becomes Thunderguard's Boots and its siblings. Water and earth follow the same pattern.[5]
Example armor upgrade. The other pieces in the shown recipes follow the same pattern.
The Mark also shows up in focus upgrades, such as Focus of Air, which is an upgrade of Lesser Focus of Air. That focus is then used to make the Air Infused Turret.[5]
Crafted at the enchanting apparatus.
Utility gear along the way
Not everything needs the Mark. The bangle line starts with Enchanter's Bangle. From it you make Air Bangle, Earth Bangle and, with Anima Essence, Anima Bangle. The Advanced Spell Prism and lenses like Arc Prism Lens and Chaining Prism Lens don't list a Mark in their recipes either.[5]

How does Ars Elemental work with other mods?
5 parts
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
Ars Elemental is an add-on to Ars Nouveau, so almost every in-pack recipe for it pulls in Ars Nouveau items. A few vanilla items and one quest with an Avaritia item show up as well. Here is what the recipes and quests in this pack show.[9][10]
Ars Nouveau is the backbone
The elemental armor sets are upgrades of Ars Nouveau armor, not new crafts from scratch. Aethermancer's Boots upgrade Arcanist's Treads, and the Thunderguard line upgrades the Battlemage pieces. The Olympian line upgrades the Sorcerer pieces. The same pattern repeats for the fire, water and earth sets. Each upgrade also needs Mark of Mastery, the matching Ars Nouveau essence and a netherite ingot. Here is one example.[9]
The other armor pieces follow the same pattern with a different base armor piece and essence.
The Ars Nouveau source relays get elemental variants as well. They are made at the enchanting apparatus with the matching essence and a diamond.[9]
- Wind Warper Relay is built on Source Relay: Warper.[9]
- Deep Depositor Relay is built on Source Relay: Depositor.[9]
- Fiery Collector Relay is built on Source Relay: Collector.[9]
The air, earth and fire turrets are imbued versions of the Enchanted Spell Turret, each using its matching focus and essence. The elemental bangles start from the Enchanter's Bangle. Advanced Spell Prism upgrades the Spell Prism, and the Acceleration, Arc and Deceleration prism lenses are imbued from Ars Nouveau and Ars Elemental glyphs together with Manipulation Essence. The Chaining Prism Lens uses a Source Gem Block. Even Trinkets Pouch starts from Magebloom Fiber.[9]
Recipes the pack changed
Some Ars Elemental recipes are marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on the mod's default recipes for them. These are Slipstream Current Elevator, Enchanter's Bangle, Spellcaster Bag and Flashjack Charm. They build on Ars Nouveau items such as Wilden Wing, Ring of Potential and Manipulation Essence. Here is the Slipstream Current Elevator as the pack has it.[9]

Quests
Mark of Mastery appears as a quest task in two places. One is in the bounty board chapter: a quest in "?". The other is in the creative chapter: a quest in "?". The creative quest asks for it together with Archmage Spell Book and Amethyst Singularity, which is the one place in the quest sources here where Ars Elemental meets Avaritia. These quests have no titles or descriptions in the sources.[10][12]
Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Ars Elemental?
3 parts
This mod shows up in the creative chapter, the bounty board chapter and the world engine tier 1 chapter of the quest book. The quests are untitled in the pack files, so they are listed here by their quest IDs.[2][3][4]
Chapter: creative
- a quest in "?" is a collection quest. It asks for the Ars Nouveau essences (abjuration, conjuration, air, earth, fire, manipulation and water), a source gem block, and ars_elemental:anima_essence from this mod. It unlocks after the quest 25CCA572C4D5CEA0 in the same chapter.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for an Archmage Spell Book, a Mark of Mastery and an Avaritia amethyst singularity. It unlocks after the quests 420239DCDE0CB837 and 521580755F40E4CC.[2]
Chapter: bounty board
a quest in "?" asks for a single Mark of Mastery. It unlocks after the quests 1F9D3474C8A655A9 and 275C5A38C3231690.[3]
Chapter: world engine tier 1
a quest in "?" has a sapling task and a planks task. The sapling task accepts any one of the blue, red, purple or green archwood saplings from Ars Nouveau, or the Flashing Archwood Sapling from this mod. The other task asks for archwood planks. The quest unlocks after the quests 47D745A94C534B48 and 58BC57B1119204CA.[4]
Which Ars Elemental config options matter?
6 parts
Ars Elemental is almost entirely at its mod defaults in this pack. The only value the pack flags as changed from the mod default is Misc.extra_biomes. It is set to 0 here, while the mod default is 1. Setting it above 0 enables archwood forests with specific trees, so in this pack that option is switched off.[13]
Flashing archwood
Misc.always_thunder is true, so lightning keeps crashing often in the flashing archwood biome(s). Set it to false if you want that to stop. The light the blocks give off is in the startup file and is at the mod defaults: [[config:config/ars_elemental-startup.toml#Flashing Archwood Settings.flashingLeavesLight]] is 6, [[config:config/ars_elemental-startup.toml#Flashing Archwood Settings.flashingWoodLight]] is 6, and [[config:config/ars_elemental-startup.toml#Flashing Archwood Settings.flashingWoodStripLight]] is 8.[13][14]
Armor and spell foci
- [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Armors.armorManaRegen]] is 4 and [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Armors.armorMaxMana]] is 100. Both are bonuses per elemental armor piece, and both are at the mod default.[13]
- The lesser focus discounts matching spell cost by 0.15 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_less_focus_discount]]) and the greater focus by 0.25 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_maj_focus_discount]]). Both match the mod defaults.[13]
- [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Abilities.glyph_empower]] and [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Abilities.regen_bonus]] are both true, so glyph empowering and the special-condition regen bonus are enabled.[13]
- [[config:config/ars_elemental-startup.toml#Beta Features.enableArmorReworkTest]] is false. That is the work-in-progress armor rework with heavy and light variants, and it needs a restart to take effect if you turn it on.[14]
Lenses, mages and other gameplay toggles
- Misc.chainLensLimit is 15 glyphs, including the ones already on the projectile. Misc.pierceLensLimit is 10 pierce. Both are at the mod default.[13]
- Misc.homing_nerf is false, so homing is not restricted to glowing mobs.[13]
- Mobs-Disabled.magesAggro is true. Wandering mages will target you too, unless you wear the focus of the same school.[13]
- Misc.soulbound_loot is true, so soulbound can show up in randomly enchanted loot chests. Misc.flarecannon_owner_kill is also true: a flarecannon killed by its owner dies and drops the charm instead of just deactivating.[13]
- Misc.squirrelRefreshRate is 600 ticks, and frame_skip_recipe is false, so the iframe skip glyph recipe is not enabled.[13]
Source costs and mermaid shrines
The slipstream elevator costs 10 source ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.airElevatorCost]]). The magmatic and bubble elevators cost 0 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.lavaElevatorCost]] and [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.waterElevatorCost]]), and the water urn costs 100 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.waterUrnCost]]). All four are at the mod defaults.[13]
Mermaid fishing is also untouched. [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidManaCost]] is 1,000 source per generation, and [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidMaxProgress]] is 30 channels before a siren produces loot. [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidBaseItems]] gives 1 base item roll per cycle, and [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidScoreBonus]] adds up to 2 extra rolls when the mood is high. A shrine can produce at most 5 items per cycle ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidQuantityCap]]). The treasure chance multiplier, [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidTreasureBonus]], is 0.002.[13]
Glyph settings
Each glyph has its own file in the ars_elemental config folder. The glyph costs shown there match the mod defaults: general.cost is 80, general.cost is 40, and general.cost is 400.[15][16][17]
The element filter glyphs (aerial, aquatic, fiery, insect and their not_ versions) cost 0 and sit at tier 1, again matching the mod defaults.[18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]
A few glyphs have augment limits set. general.augment_limits and general.augment_limits both cap Amplify at 2. general.augment_limits caps Amplify at 2 and Randomize at 1. general.augment_limits caps Pierce and Dampen at 1 each.[16][17][27][28]
For projectile lifespans, general.max_lifespan is 60 seconds and general.max_lifespan is 30 seconds, both at the mod default.[28][29]
Client visuals
Both client options are on: [[config:config/ars_elemental-client.toml#Visual Configs.Enable BlackBookTexture]] gives the upgraded spell book its black texture, and [[config:config/ars_elemental-client.toml#Visual Configs.Enable SpellFocusRender]] renders the spell focus while it is equipped.[30]
