What is Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
2 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is an RPG-inspired spellcasting mod. You fight dangerous wizards, raid structures, delve through dungeons, collect resources and hunt down powerful magical items. The pack ships version 1.21.1-3.16.3 of it.[1][2]
Where it sits in the quest book
The pack has a dedicated chapter for it, "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks", in the "Magic Mods" group. It is chapter 18 of 31 in the book and holds 49 quests. The chapter opens with "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks" quest, which comes after the quest "Proper Materials". You complete it by getting a Flimsy Journal or an Ironbound Tome. The quest also says you get a few starter spell scrolls.[3]
- "Inscribing Spells" quest comes right after the opener and asks for an Inscription Table.[3]
- Most of the chapter branches off that quest: "Casting Spells" quest, "Crafting Spells" quest, "Upgrading Spells & Equipment" quest and the individual spell book quests.[3]
- "Arcane Discoveries" quest comes after Casting Spells. It leads on to the ring and amulet quests, the armor quests and "A Magical Trip To The Nether" quest.[3]
- The legendary spell books, such as "The Ancient Codex" quest, come after the Ruined Book quest.[3]
Some quests in this chapter are not covered here, so check the quest book itself for them. The mod is not on the ATM Star quest path.[3]
How the mod's progression flows
Early on you explore and loot magic structures, find scrolls, and inscribe them into a spell book at the Inscription Table. Once you reach nether level resources, the Scroll Forge lets you craft scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. Late game is powered by the Arcane Anvil, which levels up scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells.[4][5][6]
How do you get started with Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
7 parts
Welcome to the magic side of the pack! The quest book has a whole chapter for this mod, "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks", in the Magic Mods group (chapter 18 of 31, 49 quests). Its first quest comes after Proper Materials, and the order below follows the quests that come next.[3]
Step 1: Get a starter spell book
Start with a Flimsy Journal or an Ironbound Tome. The first quest, "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks" quest, accepts either one. It also gives you a few starter spell scrolls, which you can cast once as single-use items or put in your book to cast at will with mana. You can also find a spell book as exploration loot.[3]
Step 2: Inscribe your scrolls
Next, make an Inscription Table ("Inscribing Spells" quest). Put your book in the table, add a scroll in the slot under the book, then click the icon above it to inscribe the spell. Scrolls are better saved for inscribing than burned as one-shots.[3][4]
Your starter book only holds 5 or 6 spells, so plan to upgrade it soon. The quest book then branches into the other spell books, such as Apprentice's Spell Book and Enchanted Spell Book, all unlocked after the inscribing quest.[3]
Step 3: Cast your first spell
Equip the spell book in its curio slot. By default, R opens the scroll wheel and V casts the selected spell. You can change both in your keybinds, and there are quick cast options too ("Casting Spells" quest).[3]
Step 4: Grab some extra mana
Arcane Essence is the most common magic loot you'll find. Combine it with a piece of leather armor and you get a Wandering Magician piece, an early armor that gives extra max mana ("The Wandering Magician Armor Set" quest). Here is the boots recipe as an example:[3][4][7]
Crafting Shapeless
Recipe id: irons_spellbooks:wandering_magician_boots
Step 5: Build the Arcane Anvil
The quest book puts the Arcane Anvil right after the inscribing quest ("Upgrading Spells & Equipment" quest). It upgrades spells and equipment and can imbue spells onto gear. Higher tier ink lets you improve a favorite spell that is still weak. The pack changed this recipe, so use this one rather than any mod default:[3][7]

Recipe id: irons_spellbooks:arcane_anvil
Step 6: Try a staff
Staffs cast your spell with right-click, so no hotkey is needed. The Artificer's Cane is a craftable staff that gives several buffs, and its quest also comes after inscribing. The pack changed its recipe too:[7][8]

Where to go next
For your own scrolls, collect some ink and build a Scroll Forge ("Crafting Spells" quest). Each scroll needs ink, paper and an item for the spell school, and the ink tier sets the spell level.[3]
After that, the quest book sends you to the Nether for Cinder Essence and Hogskin ("A Magical Trip To The Nether" quest). That trip unlocks the Alchemist Cauldron, Spell Slot Improvements and Upgrade Orbs. The pack changed the Alchemist Cauldron recipe:[3][7]

How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work?
5 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is an RPG-inspired spellcasting mod. Its core loop runs through a handful of crafting stations: the Inscription Table, the Scroll Forge, the Arcane Anvil and the Alchemist Cauldron. Here is how each one works in this pack.[1][4][5][6][9][10]
Inscription Table and spell books
To use a spell book properly, you inscribe spells into it at the Inscription Table, using scrolls. You can get a scroll back out of a spell book, but doing so uninscribes that spell. Beginner spell books can be crafted from basic materials.[4]
Craftable spell books get more slots with each tier you craft, and often come with extra bonuses. Unique spell books are different: they drop from certain mobs with spells already inscribed, and those spells can't be removed or edited.[11][12]
Scrolls can also be used on their own. That skips the mana cost and cooldown, but the scroll is consumed. Most players inscribe them into a book for repeated use, or recycle them in the Alchemist Cauldron.[10]
Scroll Forge, ink and foci
The Scroll Forge opens up once you reach nether-level resources. It crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. The ink sets the rarity (and so the level), and the focus sets the spell's school.[5]
Each ink tier can only craft spells whose lowest level fits that tier. If a spell's lowest level is above common, common ink can't craft it, and the same goes for every other ink. Rare ink turns up regularly in magic treasure chests and from spellcasting mobs, and epic and higher inks come from the same places. Legendary is the top tier, and some spells have several legendary levels that need the Arcane Anvil.[13]
The focus for each school is:[14]
- Fire: Blaze Rod.[14]
- Ice: Frozen Bones.[14]
- Lightning: Bottle o' Lightning.[14]
- Holy: Divine Pearl.[14]
- Ender: Ender Pearl.[14]
- Blood: Blood Vial.[14]
- Evocation: Emerald.[14]
- Nature: Poisonous Potato.[14]
- Eldritch: you can't craft or cast these at first. You restore a manuscript with an echo shard and consume it to learn one Eldritch spell. After that, the Echo Shard works as the focus.[14]
Arcane Anvil
The Arcane Anvil is the most powerful crafting station. It levels up scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells. The pack changed its crafting recipe, so check the one below rather than relying on the mod's default.[6][7]
Crafting Shaped
| Empty slot | Empty slot | |

- Scrolls: combine a scroll with the ink of its next level's rarity to upgrade it.[10]
- Unique spell books: combine the book with a higher-level scroll of the same spell to raise the level of the locked spell.[12]
- Upgrades: by default, any armor and spell books can be upgraded. An upgrade orb of a given attribute is made from a base upgrade orb and 8 runes of that attribute.[6]
- School armor: made from arcane cloth and a school rune. Class mages always drop a rune of their school.[5][6]
Late-game materials include mithril, a rare Overworld ore found below y = -38 and unexposed to air, which needs a netherite pickaxe. Dragonskin comes from the Ender Dragon and the ruined book from Ancient Cities. Both go into the Dragonskin Spell Book.[6]

Alchemist Cauldron and Blood Vials
Besides recycling scrolls, the Alchemist Cauldron has recipes for inks and for Blood Vials. A Blood Vial holds 250 units of Blood. The pack also has Create filling and emptying recipes for it.[7][10]

Pack-specific scroll and ink sources
- Sealed scrolls: right-clicking one gives a random scroll of the matching rarity, from common up to legendary. The scroll is at the lowest level for that rarity, and the sealed scroll is used up unless you are in creative mode. If no spell fits that rarity, you get 55 experience points instead.[15]
- Burning paper: paper that burns in fire drops a level 1 Burning Dash scroll.[16]
- Ink trades: the pack's trade tables include ink swaps, such as uncommon ink for epic ink after diamond, and epic ink for legendary ink after netherite. Trades earlier in the progression turn glow ink sacs into 2 uncommon ink, or common ink into 3 uncommon ink.[17][18][19]
- Furled maps: the pack disables Furled Map, Furled Map Citadel and Furled Map Ice Spider Den. Right-clicking one only shows a failure message, and they are hidden from recipe viewers.[20][21]
How do you progress through Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
7 parts
In this pack the mod has its own quest chapter, "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks", in the Magic Mods group (chapter 18 of 31 in the book, 49 quests). It opens after Proper Materials with "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks" quest, which asks for a Flimsy Journal or an Ironbound Tome. The quest also says the pack gives you a few starter Spell Scrolls.[3]
Early game: scrolls, books and first gear
- Get an Inscription Table ("Inscribing Spells" quest). You put a Spell Scroll into it to inscribe the spell into your book, and you can take it back out later. The starter spellbook only holds 5 or 6 spells, so plan to upgrade it.[3]
- Equip the book in its curio slot ("Casting Spells" quest). By default R opens the scroll wheel and V casts the selected spell. Both can be rebound, and there are quick cast options too.[3]
- Grab some Burning Dash Scrolls for exploring the void. The Air Dash quest in Useful Items & Tips says you make one by throwing a single piece of paper into a fire. The pack adds this itself with a burning recipe that turns paper into a level 1 Scroll holding Burning Dash.[16][22]
- Make your first armor. Arcane Essence combined with a piece of leather armor gives you a Wandering Magician piece, an early source of extra max mana ("The Wandering Magician Armor Set" quest).[3][4]

Spell books
After Inscribing Spells the quest book branches into many books. The craftable ones are marked as such: the starter pair (Flimsy Journal and Ironbound Tome), the Apprentice's Spell Book, and the Druidic Tome, which comes after the Rotten Spell Book quest. The Grimoire of Evokation and Necronomicon are marked as mob loot, and the Villager Bible as a trade. There is also an Enchanted Spell Book quest and a Blaze Instruction Manual quest.[3]
The Graybeard Staff is an early game weapon that is easy to craft. Staffs cast with right-click instead of a hotkey. The Artificer's Cane is another craftable staff with several buffs, and the pack changed its recipe.[7][8]

Mid game: Arcane loot, Mithril and the Nether
"Arcane Discoveries" quest comes after Casting Spells and asks for Arcane Essence, a Blank Runestone and Raw Mithril. Arcane Essence is the most common find, and Blank Runestones can be crafted into Runestones that make some of the most powerful gear in the mod. The quest says Mithril can't be had by usual methods in the void and hints that some magical source, a gate, could provide it. The pack also adds its own way to get an Mithril Ingot from Mithril Dust, shown below.[3][7]
Added by the pack. A blasting version exists too.
Many quests hang off Arcane Discoveries. That includes the accessory quests such as Ring of Mana (+100 max mana), Ring of Expediency (+15% cast time reduction), Ring of Recovery (+15% cooldown reduction), Amethyst Resonance Charm (+15% mana regeneration) and Heavy Chain (+15% spell resistance). The Graybeard Staff and Spellbreaker quests also follow it.[3][8]

Next is "A Magical Trip To The Nether" quest. Beating an Ancient Knight at a Nether Castle gives Cinder Essence, and Hoglins drop Hogskin, which some improved spellbook crafts need. Three quests follow it: the Alchemist Cauldron, Upgrade Orbs and Spell Slot Improvements.[3]
- The Alchemist Cauldron brews potions, breaks down scrolls for a chance to recycle their ink, and is the main way to get Blood Vials. The pack changed its recipe.[3][7]
- Lesser Spell Slot Improvement is crafted from a lot of Hogskin and some Arcane Cloth. Apply them in the Arcane Anvil, repeatedly, up to a max of 12 spell slots, even on the Flimsy Journal.[3]
- Upgrade Orbs are made from an Empty Upgrade Orb plus 8 runes. You can apply up to 3 orbs per piece of equipment, again at the Arcane Anvil.[3]

Ink and the Scroll Forge
"Crafting Spells" quest asks for any ink plus the Scroll Forge. Each scroll needs ink, paper and an item that sets the school. The ink tier sets the spell level you can craft, and some spells need higher inks. The quest tip says Piglin trading is an easy source of Crying Obsidian. The mod's own guide ties the Scroll Forge to nether level resources.[3][5]
The pack changed the Epic Ink brew in the Alchemist Cauldron. Its event trade tables also touch on ink: the after_iron table has trades that sell Uncommon Ink, and the after_diamond table has one that sells Epic Ink.[7][17][18]

Armor sets
"Making The Good Stuff" quest asks for Arcane Cloth. Each school armor set combines several pieces of cloth with a rune. The set quests that follow it are Cultist, Plagued, Electromancer, Scarecrow, Netherite Battlemage, Cryomancer, Shadow-Walker, Pyromancer, Priest and Archevoker. The Lightbringer Chestplate quest comes after the Priest Set, and Boots of Speed comes after the Archevoker Set.[3]
The pack changed the Netherite Battlemage boots recipe, so check the recipe below rather than the mod's defaults.[7]

Late game: legendary books
Three legendary books come after "Ruined Book" quest. The Ruined Book is normally Ancient City loot, but in the void the quest says it comes as a reward from two Gate Pearls: A Tale of Life and Death, and The Last Battle of a Fallen Kingdom. The pack also adds an Ars Nouveau enchanting apparatus recipe that turns a Ruined Book into two.[3][7]

- Dragonskin Spell Book: made with Dragonskin from the Ender Dragon. It boosts Ender spells and gives a good amount of max mana.[3][7]
- Vampiric Spell Book: made from Bloody Vellum around the Ruined Book. It boosts two particular spells and blood spell power, gives spell resistance and a large mana boost, but doesn't offer the max amount of spell slots right away.[3][7]
- Ancient Codex: a general use legendary book that grants cooldown reduction and max mana.[3]

Pack quirks to know
The pack also has Sealed Scrolls in tiers from common to legendary. Right-clicking one uses it up and gives you a random Iron's Spells scroll of the matching rarity, as long as one exists for that tier.[15]
How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work with other mods?
5 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is wired into a lot of the pack. Most of the crossover comes from the apprenticecodex addon items, which are built from this mod's materials, and from recipes the pack added so that other mods' machines use this mod's items.[7]
The apprenticecodex addon
The recipe dump counts 42 shaped crafting recipes that mix items from this mod and vanilla into apprenticecodex results, and 12 smithing transform recipes of the same kind. Apprentice Mage's Boots and Apprentice Mage's Leggings are smithing upgrades, and the boots recipe is shown below. Meanwhile, Crystalline Arcane Shard can be ground or blasted back into Arcane Essence.[7]
Create
Create machines handle some of the addon's materials. A deploying recipe with the Spell Casing Mold makes Empty Arcane Spellcaster Casing, and a mixing recipe makes Arcane Propellant Charge. Both recipes are shown below.[7]

Malum
Malum's spirit infusion makes Soulcollector's Hat, Soulcollector's Boots and Soul-Augmented Weave, and this mod's Arcane Cloth appears in all three. The hat recipe is shown below. The Soulstained Steel Spell Amplifier is also built around Malum materials. The pack adds its own spirit infusion recipe for the Worm Scarf, which features Mithril Weave.[7]

Recipes the pack added or changed
- Mithril Dust can be smelted or blasted into Mithril Ingot. Both recipes are added by the pack.[7]
- Two pack-made Gate Pearl recipes each use one of this mod's runes: the Nature Rune in one and the Blood Rune in the other.[7]
- A pack recipe turns a Blood Vial into 8 Soulium Dust.[7]
- Two icy pack-added recipes involve this mod: Empowered Ice (Actually Additions empowering, with the Permafrost Shard) and Cryofluid (Create mixing, with the Ice Upgrade Orb). Both are shown below.[7]
- Two pack-added recipes feature gear from this mod: Master Ninja Gear (fusion, with the Shadow-Walker Mask) and Charm of Myths (athanor, with the Amethyst Resonance Charm). Both are shown below.[7]
- The pack changed the Ars Elemental recipes for Shocking and the Discharge glyph. Both now call for the Bottle o' Lightning.[7]
- The recipe for the Patchouli Guide Book is changed by the pack. It uses Arcane Essence.[7]
- Blood-Infused Spellbook has two recipes that start from either the Flimsy Journal or the Enchanted Spell Book.[7]
- Productive Bees can also give you Arcane Essence, through a honeycomb centrifuge recipe.[7]

In the quest book
The "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks" chapter sits in the "Magic Mods" group, as chapter 18 of 31, and has 49 quests. It opens after the quest "Proper Materials". Only part of the chapter's text is available here, so check the quest book for the rest.[3]
The quest "Arcane Discoveries" quest says Mithril is not obtainable through usual methods in the void and hints that a gate could provide it. The quest "Ruined Book" quest says the Ruined Book comes here as a reward from two Gate Pearls, instead of Ancient City loot.[3]
Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
3 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks has its own chapter in the quest book, plus a handful of quests scattered through three other chapters. The main chapter sits in the Magic Mods group, as chapter 18 of 31, and holds 49 quests.[3]
The main chapter, in order
- "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks" quest is the entry point and comes after the quest "Proper Materials". It asks for either a Flimsy Journal or an Ironbound Tome. The quest text says you will get a few starter Spell Scrolls, which you can cast as single-use items or place in a Spell Book.[3]
- "Inscribing Spells" quest asks for an Inscription Table. You use it to inscribe scrolls into your tome, and the text warns that the starter book only holds 5 or 6 spells.[3]
- Most of the rest of the chapter opens up after Inscribing Spells. "Crafting Spells" quest asks for any ink plus a Scroll Forge. "Upgrading Spells & Equipment" quest asks for the Arcane Anvil. "Casting Spells" quest is a checkmark that explains the controls: the scroll wheel opens with R by default and V casts the selected spell.[3]
- The spell book quests also follow Inscribing Spells: "Starter Spellbooks" quest, "Apprentice's Spell Book" quest, "Enchanted Spell Book" quest, "Grimoire of Evokation" quest, "Necronomicon" quest, "Villager Bible" quest, "Rotten Spell Book" quest, "Blaze Instruction Manual" quest and "Ruined Book" quest. The book tags them as craftable, mob loot or trade.[3]
- The Ruined Book quest leads to the legendary books: "The Dragonskin Spell Book" quest, "The Vampiric Spellbook" quest and "The Ancient Codex" quest. The Rotten Spell Book quest leads to "Druidic Tome" quest. The Ruined Book text says that in the void you get it as a reward from two Gate Pearls.[3]
- "Arcane Discoveries" quest comes after Casting Spells. It asks for Arcane Essence, a Blank Runestone and Raw Mithril. The text says Mithril can't be obtained through usual methods in the void and hints that some sort of gate could provide it.[3]
After Arcane Discoveries
Arcane Discoveries branches into three groups. The first is a run of accessory quests. The second is "A Magical Trip To The Nether" quest, which asks for Cinder Essence and Hogskin. The third is "Making The Good Stuff" quest, which asks for Arcane Cloth.[3]
- Accessories: "Ring of Mana" quest (listed as +100 Max Mana), "Ring of Expediency" quest (+15% Cast Time Reduction), "Ring of Recovery" quest (+15% Cooldown Reduction), "Amethyst Resonance Charm" quest (+15% Mana Regeneration), "Amulet of Concentration" quest, "Heavy Chain" quest (+15% Spell Resistance), "Conjurer's Talisman" quest (+10% Summon Damage), "Emerald Stoneplate Ring" quest (25% more experience from creatures), "Ring of Expulsion" quest, "Frostward Ring" quest, "Poisonward Ring" quest and "Fireward Ring" quest.[3]
- "The Wandering Magician Armor Set" quest is the early game armor and also follows Arcane Discoveries.[3]
- After the Nether trip: "Spell Slot Improvements" quest (the text says spell slots can reach a max of 12 through the Arcane Anvil), "The Alchemist Cauldron" quest and "Upgrade Orbs" quest (up to 3 Orbs per equipment piece).[3]
- After Making The Good Stuff come the armor sets: "Cultist Set" quest, "Plagued Set" quest, "Electromancer Set" quest, "Scarecrow Set" quest, "Netherite Battlemage Set" quest, "Cryomancer Set" quest, "Shadow-Walker Set" quest, "Pyromancer Set" quest, "Priest Set" quest and "Archevoker Set" quest.[3]
- The chapter finishes with two quests that hang off the armor sets: "Lightbringer Chestplate" quest after the Priest Set, and "Boots of Speed" quest after the Archevoker Set.[3]
Quests in other chapters
The Gearing Up chapter (group Exploration & Combat, chapter 14 of 31) has several staff quests. "Artificer's Cane" quest follows Inscribing Spells, and the text calls the Artificer's Cane a craftable staff with several buffs. "Graybeard Staff" quest and "Spellbreaker" quest follow Arcane Discoveries. The Graybeard text says staffs cast spells with right-click instead of a hotkey. "Ice Staff" quest, "Rod 'o Lightning" quest and "The Blood Staff" quest ask for the Ice Staff, the Rod o' Lightning and The Blood Staff with no prerequisite shown.[8]
In Useful Items & Tips, "Air Dash" quest asks for a Scroll and comes after Proper Materials. It suggests stacks of Burning Dash Scrolls to help you explore the void.[22]
The Bounty Board chapter (group Exploration & Combat, chapter 11 of 31) is made of repeatable quests that pay out cash for the shops. One of them, "Defeat the Echo of Flame" quest, asks for a Cinderous Soulcaller plus a kill and a structure. The text says you use it near the Cinderous Soul Rune in a Nether arena to challenge the Echo of Flame. The chapter has 59 quests and the rest are in the quest book, so check there for any others tied to this mod.[23]
