What is Apprentice's Codex?
2 parts
Apprentice's Codex is an addon for Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks that adds some apprentice's magic content. It focuses on side-grade magic: new spells, spellcasting weapons, curios, spellbooks and utility blocks, so you get more options without a whole new progression track.[1]
This pack ships version 0.9.7.1 of the mod for Minecraft 1.21.1. It was already in the pack in 1.9.0 or earlier.[2]
What it adds
- Around 60 spells: combat spells like summoned blades, rifles, shotguns and muskets, plus defensive and support spells such as barriers, guard stances, traps, healing blooms and mana recovery.[1]
- Utility spells for exploration and gathering: magical lights, personal storage, remote vision, structure search, pet storage, treasure sensing, tree cutting, terrain shaping, crop harvesting, smelting-style processing and item collection.[1]
- Spellcasting gear: Spellcaster Guns, Swingcast Staves, Offhand Spell Amplifiers, and specialized weapons like the Smashcast Scepter, Focus Staffbow, Multipurpose Staffrifle, Reflectcast Shield and Mana Force Blade.[1]
- Spellbooks and curios, including the Ender Grimoire, Archivist's Grimoire and Spell-stained Runic Tablet, along with mana and defense accessories.[1]
- Mage armor sets: glass-cannon robes and school-agnostic caster gear that give you more spell power at a real defensive cost.[1]
- Utility blocks: the Spellcaster Workbench, Spell Dispenser and Atelier Station, among others.[1]
The mod does not add new mobs, spell schools, ores, biomes or mandatory progression. Newly generated villages may include a new profession villager.[1]
Datapack customization
Spell-related profiles, deny lists and other gameplay data can be added or changed through datapacks. The detailed documentation lives on the mod's GitHub Wiki and is written in Japanese, so use your browser's translation feature. Datapack formats can change between mod versions, so check the page matching version 0.9.7.1. In-game descriptions, tooltips and JEI may not cover every datapack option.[1][2]
How do you get started with Apprentice's Codex?
6 parts
Apprentice's Codex is an addon for Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, so a lot of what you craft here builds on Iron's items like Arcane Ingots and scrolls. Here is the order I'd go in, picked from what each in-pack recipe needs.[1][3]
First: make an Iron Swingcast Staff
Start with Iron Swingcast Staff. Its recipe only uses vanilla materials, so you can make it before you touch any Iron's Spells gear. The mod's own advancement tab also has an advancement for crafting it.[3][4]

Second: infuse a scroll into an ingot
Next, use the Essence Smoker to turn an Arcane Ingot and a scroll into a Spell-stained Arcane Ingot. The Essence Smoker has its own crafting advancement too.[3][4]

Recipe id: apprenticecodex:essence_smoker/infuse_scroll_to_ingot
The same machine makes Arcane Cinder from Cinder Essence and charcoal. In this pack, Items.ArcaneCinder.limitArcaneCinderSpeedupToVanillaFurnaces is set to true, so its speedup only applies to vanilla furnaces.[3][5]

Third: craft the Spell-stained Runic Tablet
The Spell-stained Runic Tablet is one of the mod's spellbook-style items, and it uses the ingot from the last step. It is a carryover smithing recipe that takes an Apprentice's Spell Book, so get one of those from Iron's Spells first.[1][3]

Fourth: set up ammo for spellguns
The Spellcaster Workbench makes Arcane Spellcaster Round in batches of 10. It also has a recipe for Advanced Spellcaster Round in batches of 12.[3]

If you want to automate later, Create can make casings and rounds too. A deploying recipe turns a Spell Casing Mold into 16 Empty Advanced Spellcaster Casings, and a sequenced assembly recipe finishes the rounds.[3]

Later: Crystalline Arcane Shards
The Arcanum in a Jar block converts one configured material into one configured product. This pack's server config sets them to Redstone and Crystalline Arcane Shard, through Blocks.ArcanumInAJar.materialItemId and Blocks.ArcanumInAJar.productItemId. The shards are needed for recipes like Arrow of Anti-Mana.[3][5]
How does Apprentice's Codex work?
7 parts
Apprentice's Codex is mostly a set of spell-flavoured utility blocks and gear, so its mechanics are about water, ink, redstone, mana and a few crafting stations, not big multiblock machines. This section covers the blocks and systems that the pack's files actually spell out. Every value below is what this pack sets, and where the pack's value is the same as the mod default, I say so.[1][5]
Spell Dispenser
The Spell Dispenser casts supported scroll spells using redstone, mana potion fuel, and optional Create contraption support. This is the main automation block of the mod.[1]
The pack leaves casting switched on (Blocks.SpellDispenser.enable is true). The cooldown multiplier is 1, the same as the mod default, and you can scale it with Blocks.SpellDispenser.cooldownMultiplier. Its minimum is 0.1.[5]
The Creative Spell Dispenser has its own cooldown multiplier, Blocks.SpellDispenser.creativeCooldownMultiplier, which is 0.1 in the pack (the same as the mod default).[5]
The Creative Spell Dispenser does not use mana unless you turn on Blocks.SpellDispenser.creativeManaConsumption, which is off in the pack.[5]
The server can also restrict which spells a dispenser may cast. The allowlist is off in the pack (Blocks.SpellDispenser.enableSpellAllowlist is false). If someone turns it on, an empty Blocks.SpellDispenser.spellAllowlist blocks every spell.[5]
When a dispenser fails to cast, a chat message tells you why. The reasons include: still on spell cooldown, not enough mana (it shows what is needed and what it has), a spell that cannot be used with a dispenser, no spell scroll set, missing owner data, unmet casting requirements, a spell not on the server allowlist, and casting disabled by the server. If your automation goes quiet, check that message first.[4]
Alchemy Brewer
The Alchemy Brewer supplies water to nearby cauldrons wirelessly, in repeated attempts. Setting either amount to 0 excludes that cauldron type. These are the pack's values:[5]
- Blocks.AlchemyBrewer.alchemistCauldronWaterAmountMb: 250 mB of water per attempt for an Alchemist Cauldron (mod default 250, range 0 to 1000).[5]
- Blocks.AlchemyBrewer.vanillaCauldronWaterLevelIncrease: 1 water level per attempt for a vanilla cauldron (mod default 1, range 0 to 3).[5]
- Blocks.AlchemyBrewer.waterSupplyIntervalTicks: 20 ticks between wireless water supply attempts (mod default 20, minimum 10 ticks).[5]
Apprentice Desk and ink
The Apprentice Desk uses ink, and each ink gives a limited number of desk crafts depending on its rarity. The pack's values match the mod defaults:[5]
- Blocks.ApprenticeDesk.commonInkMaxUses: 5 crafts per Common ink.[5]
- Blocks.ApprenticeDesk.uncommonInkMaxUses: 4 crafts per Uncommon ink.[5]
- Blocks.ApprenticeDesk.rareInkMaxUses: 3 crafts per Rare ink.[5]
- Blocks.ApprenticeDesk.epicInkMaxUses: 3 crafts per Epic ink.[5]
- Blocks.ApprenticeDesk.legendaryInkMaxUses: 2 crafts per Legendary ink.[5]
When a partially used ink runs out, you get a glass bottle back, because Blocks.ApprenticeDesk.returnGlassBottleWhenInkDepleted is true in the pack.[5]
Arcanum in a Jar
The Arcanum in a Jar converts one accepted material into one product. In this pack the material is redstone and the product is Crystalline Arcane Shard, set by Blocks.ArcanumInAJar.materialItemId and Blocks.ArcanumInAJar.productItemId. Both options accept a single item ID only. The mod also has advancements for retrieving a converted item and for retrieving it when the jar is fully charged.[4][5]
Crafting stations and automation
The Essence Smoker has its own recipe type. It infuses charcoal into Arcane Cinder. The speedup from Arcane Cinder is limited to vanilla furnaces by default, and the pack keeps that limit on (Items.ArcaneCinder.limitArcaneCinderSpeedupToVanillaFurnaces). Behaviour in non-vanilla furnaces is not guaranteed if you turn it off.[3][5]
Essence Smoker (apprenticecodex)
Recipe id: apprenticecodex:essence_smoker/infuse_charcoal_to_arcane_cinder
The Spellcaster Workbench is another block with its own recipe type. It makes Advanced Spellcaster Round in batches of 12, and a second recipe makes 12 rounds from empty casings.[3]

If you run Create, the same ammo has an automated route. A deploying recipe makes 16 Empty Advanced Spellcaster Casing at a time, and a sequenced assembly recipe builds the finished round, using Incomplete Spellcaster Round as the in-progress item.[3]

Storage and mana handling
The Magi-Compressor Gadget turns mana into compressed air for Create. In this pack it uses 40 mana per second and fills 5 air per second, up to a maximum of 50 air. Values above Create's Backtank capacity cannot be fully exposed to Create air consumers.[5]
The Luminous Device stores up to 1,024 items and 2,000 mana. After you unlock its mana and Wizardlamp upgrade, the mana limit becomes 5,000. It recovers 20 mana for each Mage Light it removes and 50 for each Wizardlamp.[5]
The Archivist's Grimoire starts with 1 unlocked row and can unlock up to 6. Each row holds 9 scroll slots.[5]
Datapack customisation
The mod can be customised with datapacks, covering things like spell-related profiles, deny lists and recipe-like data. Its documentation lives on the mod's GitHub wiki, is written in Japanese, and may not match every mod version. In-game descriptions, tooltips and JEI may not cover every datapack option.[1]
How do you progress through Apprentice's Codex?
5 parts
The pack's recipes give this mod a clear ladder, even without quest guidance. You climb it by the materials each recipe asks for, starting with plain vanilla items and moving through Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks materials, then Create machines, and finally Malum spirit infusion.[3]
Tier 1: vanilla materials
The Iron Swingcast Staff recipe only uses vanilla items, so nothing from another mod is needed to make it.[3]

Tier 2: Arcane Ingots and Arcane Cloth
Next you start using Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks materials. The Copper Swingcast Staff needs an Arcane Ingot, and the Alchemy Brewer and Atelier Station both need Arcane Cloth. The Apprentice Mage's Boots are a smithing upgrade that also uses Arcane Cloth.[3]
The Luminous Device needs Arcane Cinder, which you make in the Essence Smoker from Cinder Essence and charcoal.[3]

Next: mithril and spell-stained materials
Mithril is the next step up. The Amulet of Absorption Amplify, the Spellcaster's Accessory Case and the Ring of Weapon Attackcast all call for it. The ring also needs the Mithril Freecast Staff, so that staff comes first.[3]
You can also infuse an Arcane Ingot with a Scroll in the Essence Smoker to get a Spell-stained Arcane Ingot. That ingot goes into the Spell-stained Runic Tablet and into the top casing tier below.[3]
The ammo ladder
Spellcaster rounds follow the same pattern. In the Spellcaster Workbench, an Arcane Ingot makes 10 Arcane Spellcaster Round, while gold makes 12 Advanced Spellcaster Round.[3]
For bulk casings, a Spell Casing Mold is deployed onto an ingot with Create. Gold gives 16 Empty Advanced Spellcaster Casing, an Arcane Ingot gives 12 Empty Arcane Spellcaster Casing, and a Spell-stained Arcane Ingot gives 16 Empty Spell Dominator Casing.[3]
Create can also mix 64 Arcane Propellant Charge at a time. They go into a sequenced assembly that produces Advanced Spellcaster Rounds.[3]

Late game: netherite and Malum
Spell amplifiers show the late tiers well. A Diamond Spell Amplifier is upgraded to a Netherite Spell Amplifier at a smithing table. The Soulstained Steel Spell Amplifier branches off into Malum territory, using Hex Ash and a Soulstained Steel Ingot.[3]

How does Apprentice's Codex work with other mods?
4 parts
Apprentice's Codex is an addon for Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, so that is the mod it connects to most. In this pack it also reaches into Create, Malum and FTB Materials through its recipes.[1][3]
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks
Most of the addon's gear is built from Iron's materials. 42 shaped crafting recipes and 12 smithing recipes take Iron's and vanilla items as ingredients to make Codex items. Three Iron's materials turn up again and again in the recipes in this section.[3]
- Arcane Ingot shows up in many of the Codex recipes in this section.[3]
- Mithril Scrap is also used in many of them.[3]
- Arcane Cloth appears in the mage armor, workstation and Malum recipes below.[3]

The mage armor is a good example. Apprentice Mage's Boots is a smithing upgrade of Iron's Wandering Magician Shoes. The Chromatic Magia Dress and Maiden of the Elements pieces accept any piece from the matching Iron's wizard base armor tag.[3]
Some Codex items also feed back into Iron's materials through grind runner recipes. In total, 12 grind runner recipes take Codex items and give back Iron's items. The Ring of Weapon Attackcast is one of them.[3]

Create
Create has its own recipes for the addon's materials. Crushing a Crystalline Arcane Shard gives 2 Arcane Essence. Mixing makes 64 Arcane Propellant Charge per batch, and deploying makes 12 Empty Arcane Spellcaster Casing at a time.[3]
Mixing (create)
Recipe id: apprenticecodex:create/mixing/arcane_propellant_charge

Spirit infusion recipes make Soulcollector's Hat, Soulcollector's Boots, Soulcollector's Leggings, Malignant Anti-Magic Spellgun, Soul-Augmented Weave, Soul-Covered Plate and Soulstained Steel Swingcast Staff. The Soulcollector pieces start from the matching Malum Soulhunter armor piece and also use Refined Soulstone.[3]

Which Apprentice's Codex config options matter?
5 parts
Most of what you can tweak for Apprentice's Codex lives in the server config. Everything below that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default in this pack, so none of these values are pack changes.[5]
Spell Dispenser
- Blocks.SpellDispenser.enable is true, so redstone and contraption casting is on. Blocks.SpellDispenser.cooldownMultiplier is 1, and its minimum is 0.1.[5]
- Blocks.SpellDispenser.creativeCooldownMultiplier is 0.1 and Blocks.SpellDispenser.creativeManaConsumption is false, so the Creative Spell Dispenser does not use mana.[5]
- Blocks.SpellDispenser.enableSpellAllowlist is false and Blocks.SpellDispenser.spellAllowlist is empty. If you ever turn the allowlist on, an empty list blocks all spells.[5]
- Spells.CatchFlame.allowSpellDispenserIgnition is true, while Spells.CatchFlame.allowNonPlayerIgnition is false.[5]
Apprentice Desk and Arcanum in a Jar
- One ink gives a set number of Apprentice Desk crafts: Blocks.ApprenticeDesk.commonInkMaxUses is 5, Blocks.ApprenticeDesk.uncommonInkMaxUses is 4, Blocks.ApprenticeDesk.rareInkMaxUses is 3, Blocks.ApprenticeDesk.epicInkMaxUses is 3 and Blocks.ApprenticeDesk.legendaryInkMaxUses is 2.[5]
- Blocks.ApprenticeDesk.returnGlassBottleWhenInkDepleted is true, so you get a glass bottle back when a partially used ink runs out.[5]
- Arcanum in a Jar is set to convert Redstone into Crystalline Arcane Shard, through Blocks.ArcanumInAJar.materialItemId and Blocks.ArcanumInAJar.productItemId. Blocks.ArcanumInAJar.ticksPerStoredParameter is 3600.[5]
Spell restrictions
Demicreator Wings, Remote Eye and Rift Hole each have a dimension allowlist and denylist. In this pack the allowlists are switched off (for example Spells.RiftHole.enableDimensionAllowlist is false) and every list is empty, so none of them blocks a dimension.[5]
A couple of spell numbers you may notice: Spells.MageLight.maxRange is 32, and Spells.LinearBuild.manaCostPerBlock is 5 extra mana for each block Linear Build places. Linear Build can pull blocks from Bundles (Spells.LinearBuild.enableBundleSources) and Shulker Boxes (Spells.LinearBuild.enableShulkerBoxSources) you carry, and both are true. Spells.LinearBuild.abortOnFailedPlacement is false, so it skips failed positions and keeps going.[5]
Loot and world generation
Loot.enableApprenticeCurioLoot is true and Loot.apprenticeCurioLootChanceMultiplier is 1, which is the default chance. Village generation also injects Errand Mage houses, because Worldgen.ErrandMageVillageHouse.enableInjection is true.[5]
Common config
The common file keeps Compatibility.enableIronsSpellbooksSchoolSpellCacheHotfix at false. Both SchoolAffinity.schoolAffinityPriority and SchoolAffinity.schoolAffinityDeny are empty lists.[6]
Unverified Client-side options are set in config/apprenticecodex-client.toml, and the sources here do not show its values.
What changed in Apprentice's Codex between versions?
3 parts
FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Apprentice's Codex 0.9.7.1. It was first included in Aero 1.9.0 or earlier, so this is the version you are playing.[2]
The 0.9.7.1 update mainly fixes critical issues that appeared when certain other mods were installed. It only adds a small amount of content that was already in development. The mod's developers also say they are reviewing and rebalancing older content ahead of the 1.0 release.[7]
New content in 0.9.7.1
- New spells: Combustion Jet (blasts enemies away with a wave of heat), Blood Brand, Shiden (gives a blade that has lost its edge a single sharp strike) and Catch Flame (lights the fire for every loaded Essence Smoker in range).[7]
- A new block, the Magnetic Stability Anchor, the so-called "flower" that stops Auto Magnet.[7]
- A new item, the Arrow of Anti-Mana, a PvP countermeasure against the Talisman of Mana Shield. If the Mana Shield blocks it, it applies a debuff that temporarily disables the shield.[7]
Spell balance changes
- Slash Blade: damage is significantly reduced and the cooldown goes up from 1s to 1.5s.[7]
- Lethal Assault: knockback has been removed.[7]
- Totem of Permafrost: the cooldown now applies even while the Greater Conjurer's Talisman is equipped. Duration is fixed at 6 seconds and no longer scales with spell power.[7]
- Archer Multiple: duration is fixed at 30 seconds, the ammunition system (and the enhanced final shot with it) is gone, and it no longer persists through logout. Counterspell can now dispel it by directly hitting the summoned entity.[7]
- Servant Gaze: it moves to the Ender school and its cooldown rises from 30s to 150s. It is no longer a summon you toggle by recasting, but a summon with a fixed duration of 10 minutes. Counterspell can dispel it by directly hitting the summoned entity.[7]
- Field Overseer: the staff's mana now depends only on spell level instead of the player's maximum mana.[7]
- Unite Luna: it no longer inherits Forge/NeoForge magic tags, so Malum's Magic Proficiency no longer affects it. It also gains less additional power from the Transcendence enchantment.[7]
Item balance changes
- Mana Thruster no longer temporarily stops natural mana regeneration after you activate it.[7]
- The Talisman of Mana Shield has been reworked. If an Arrow of Anti-Mana is blocked by the Mana Shield, it applies a debuff that temporarily disables the shield, and the Neutralization enchantment lets you resist that effect by consuming mana. All three of its enchantments were reworked too, and Shell now takes armor enchantments into account.[7]
