What is Enchanted: Witchcraft?

1 part

Enchanted: Witchcraft is a large magic mod about occult practices and witchcraft, inspired by paganism and Celtic folklore. There are no flashy spells, fireballs or lightning bolts. You make useful tools, trinkets and potions from everyday items. This pack includes version 4.2.7 of the mod.[1][2]

The mod is split into branches of magic:[1]

  • Herbology: grow your own witch's garden of trees, herbs and flowers.[1]
  • Circle magic: use chalk circles to perform over 45 rites that alter the world, curse enemies or protect your farm from mobs.[1]
  • Brewing: make potions and concoctions by dropping items into a cauldron or kettle.[1]
  • Poppetry: craft poppets to protect yourself from death, or make a voodoo doll of a friend.[1]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book has an "Enchanted" chapter in the "Magic Mods" group. It is chapter 17 of 31 in the book and holds 22 quests. It opens with "Entering Enchanted" quest, which asks for the Witch's Oven and the Clay Jar and points you toward herbology first.[3]

From there the chapter branches into a few lines:[3]

Two quests in this chapter are not covered in this guide, so check the quest book itself for them.[3]

How do you get started with Enchanted: Witchcraft?

6 parts

The pack's quest book has an Enchanted chapter in the Magic Mods group (chapter 17 of 31 in the book, 22 quests). The steps below follow its quest order.[3]

Witch's Oven and Clay Jars

The first quest, Entering Enchanted, asks for a Witch's Oven and a Clay Jar. The quest says the Oven is the iconic block of the mod, but to really get started you need to take a dip into herbology. The Oven collects fumes in jars, and the Distillery quest notes that this takes quite a few clay jars.[3]

Clay jars are smelted from soft clay jars.

Herbs and Anointing Paste

Essential Herbs asks for Belladonna Seeds, Snowbell Seeds, Water Artichoke Seeds and Mandrake Seeds. The pack adds Farming for Blockheads market offers for the belladonna, mandrake and snowbell seeds. The option [[config:config/enchanted-common.toml#Miscellaneous Options.hoe_seeds]] is false in this pack, so you don't need a hoe for modded seeds to drop when you break grass.[1][3][4][5]

Water Artichoke needs to be planted on still water. Mandrakes can sprout out of the ground when plucked and run around with a dizzying scream until slain, so the quest heavily suggests Earmuffs.[3]

Those four seeds make Anointing Paste. The quest says it will be used to craft Poppets later, but for now it is needed to make the Witch's Cauldron.[3]

The Kettle

Toil and Trouble gives you the Kettle. It needs heat underneath, so put it over a Campfire or a similar heat source. A bucket of water starts to boil when it works. Ingredients go in the order each recipe shows. Once the particles stop changing colors, right-click to extract the product. If you mess up, an empty bucket clears the Kettle.[3]

Be careful with your ingredients: [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Kettle Options.kettle_item_spoil]] is true in this pack, so incorrect items can spoil the brew.[6]

Fumes

Supernatural Scents is about cooking saplings, logs and foods in the Witch's Oven to collect fumes in jars. Oak, Birch and Rowan saplings have fumes that are key to progression. The Fumes quest says a Fume Funnel on either side of the oven drastically raises the chance of getting a fume. Putting a Fume Filter on each of those two funnels gets you the fumes every time.[3]

Mutandis and the special trees

Next in the progression is Mutandis, made in the Kettle. One of its ingredients comes from the Witch's Oven. Extract all six products so the cauldron is clear for next time. Mutandis mutates small plants such as saplings, and the quest points you to the Mutated Plants section of the Herbology chapter in your guidebook.[3]

The Witcher-Trees quest then asks for Alder Sapling, Hawthorn Sapling and Rowan Sapling, which you can get by mutating oak, birch or acacia saplings.[3]

Watch out: Bone meal and similar effects work against mutandis, so don't force the change. Grow each new sapling into a proper tree once you get it, because getting it again could take even more mutandis.[3]

Altar and Attuned Stone

The Altar quest unlocks after Witcher-Trees and Supernatural Scents. The quest says the Altar is made from the fumes of oak and birch saplings and Rowan wood. It is a 2x3 structure, enhanced by items placed on it and buffed by nature in the surrounding 16 blocks. In the server config this pack sets [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Altar Options.altar_range]] to 16, changed from the mod default of 32.[3][6]

The Attuned Stone is called the key point of progress in its quest. It is made using Whiffs of Magic and diamonds, and it opens up Poppets and Circle Magic. The Distillery quest also comes after it.[3]

How does Enchanted: Witchcraft work?

7 parts

Enchanted: Witchcraft is built around everyday items used in "diegetic" ways with as few GUIs as possible. You won't find fireballs here. Instead you drop ingredients into stations and get tools, trinkets and potions out. This page covers what the sources confirm about how those systems work in the pack.[1]

The stations

The mod has four branches: herbology, circle magic (over 45 rites), brewing and poppetry. These are the stations that have their own screens in the language file:[1][7]

There's an in-game guide called "Art of Witchcraft". You craft it with a book, an ink sac, a feather and Belladonna Seeds. The pack also adds a Farming for Blockheads market recipe for Belladonna Seeds, so you have a second way to get them.[1][4][7]

Brewing: kettle and cauldron

Brewing works by dropping items into your Witch's Cauldron or Kettle. The pack leaves the spoil options on, in [[config:config/enchanted-common.toml#Kettle Options.kettle_item_spoil]] and [[config:config/enchanted-common.toml#Cauldron Options.cauldron_item_spoil]]. That means a wrong item spoils the brew, so add ingredients carefully.[1][5]

A Kettle recipe is its own recipe type. Brew of Love is one example, and it makes 3 brews per batch:[4]

Kettle (enchanted)

Recipe id: enchanted:kettle/brew_of_love

The Witch's Cauldron is made by right-clicking a cauldron with Anointing Paste. The Kettle recipe family in the pack has 16 recipes, each with a different result.[4][7]

Distilling

Distilling recipes use up Clay Jar items and give several outputs at once. The jars themselves come from firing a Soft Clay Jar.[4]

Clay JarMod recipe

Smelting

Recipe id: enchanted:clay_jar

Oil of Vitriol is made by one distilling recipe and used by another, so the stations feed each other. Here is the recipe that makes it, followed by the one that uses it:[4]

Distilling (enchanted)

Recipe id: enchanted:distilling/foul_fume_quicklime

Distilling (enchanted)

Recipe id: enchanted:distilling/diamond_oil_of_vitriol

Another distilling recipe turns Breath of the Goddess into Tear of the Goddess and Whiff of Magic, among other outputs:[4]

Distilling (enchanted)

Recipe id: enchanted:distilling/breath_of_the_goddess_lapis_lazuli

Some recipes use the type "byproduct", such as turning a birch sapling into Breath of the Goddess or raw foods into Foul Fume. The sources list these recipes but don't say which station runs them.[4]

Spinning Wheel and poppets

The Spinning Wheel runs recipes of the type enchanted:wheel. The pack has 26 of them, each with a different result. Poppets are upgraded here, for example the Armour Poppet and the Infused Void Poppet:[4]

Armour PoppetMod recipe

Wheel (enchanted)

Recipe id: enchanted:spinning/armour_poppet

Wheel (enchanted)

Recipe id: enchanted:spinning/infused_void_poppet

Totems of undying work normally in the pack. [[config:config/enchanted-common.toml#Miscellaneous Options.disable_totems]] is false, though the option exists to make poppets more useful.[5]

Altar and circle magic

Circle magic uses chalk circles to perform rites. A rite's tooltip can tell you that it requires a set amount of power per tick, that it needs sacrifices, or that it must be cast within a time range. No rites are disabled in the pack, because [[config:config/enchanted-common.toml#Circle Magic Options.disabled_rites]] is empty.[1][5][7]

The Altar's range is 16 blocks' worth of setting in both [[config:config/enchanted-common.toml#Altar Options.altar_range]] and [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Altar Options.altar_range]]. In the server file the mod default is 32, so the pack lowered it. Altar power recharge is a multiplier, and [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Altar Options.altar_recharge_rate]] is at its default of 2.[5][6]

Curses and other tuning

  • [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Curse Options.clumsy_chance]] is 0.02, the chance that a clumsy player drops an item on each swing.[6]
  • Curses whisper at players every 120 to 240 seconds, set by [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Curse Options.curse_whisper_min]] and [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Curse Options.curse_whisper_max]].[6]
  • Axes do 3 times damage against an Ent, set by [[config:config/enchanted-common.toml#Miscellaneous Options.ent_axe_multiplier]]. The Ent Twig has its own recipe, shown below.[4][5]
  • [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Miscellaneous Options.hoe_seeds]] is false, so modded seeds drop from breaking grass without needing a hoe.[1][6]

Pack changes and compat

The pack adds a Modern Industrialization compressor recipe for Wicker Bundle and a Create cutting recipe from Alder Log to Stripped Alder Log. Both are pack additions rather than mod recipes.[4]

The pack also changes leaf drops. Alder, hawthorn and rowan leaves only drop themselves when broken with shears or a Silk Touch tool.[8]

Unverified The sources don't explain how hoppers, pipes or other automation interact with the Kettle, Witch's Cauldron, Distillery or Witch's Oven, so check in-game before building automation around them.

How do you progress through Enchanted: Witchcraft?

6 parts

The pack's quest book puts Enchanted in the Magic Mods group, as chapter 17 of 31, with 22 quests. As the quests lay it out, you go from herbs and the oven, through the Kettle and Altar, to Attuned Stones, and from there to Poppets, the Distillery and Circle Magic.[3]

Tier 1: Herbs, the oven and fumes

"Entering Enchanted" quest is the entry point. It asks for the Witch's Oven and a Clay Jar. The quest text calls the oven the iconic block of the mod, but says you need to take a dip into herbology to really get started.[3]

"Essential Herbs" quest asks for four seeds: Belladonna Seeds, Snowbell Seeds, Water Artichoke Seeds and Mandrake Seeds. This pack adds a Farming for Blockheads market entry for each of them. The quest notes that Water Artichoke needs to be planted on still water, and that Mandrakes can run around screaming when plucked, so it heavily suggests Earmuffs.[3][4]

"Anointing Paste" quest comes after Essential Herbs, and the quest says it needs all four of those seeds. The quest text says the paste will be used to craft Poppets later, and that for now it is needed to make the Witch's Cauldron.[3][4]

"Supernatural Scents" quest and "Fumes" quest both come after Entering Enchanted. The quest text says cooking saplings, logs and foods in the oven lets you collect fumes in jars, and that Oak, Birch and Rowan sapling fumes are key to progression. According to the Fumes quest, Fume Funnels on either side of the oven drastically raise the chance of collecting fumes, and Fume Filters on those two funnels get you fumes every time.[3]

Tier 2: The Kettle and Mutandis

"Toil and Trouble" quest asks for the Kettle. The quest says it needs some heat underneath, such as a Campfire or similar heat source. Ingredients are dropped in in the order each recipe shows, and you right-click to extract the product once the particles stop changing colors. If you mess up, the quest says an empty bucket clears the Kettle out.[3]

Two quests come after the Kettle. a quest in "Enchanted" is described as an advanced ingredient for other key recipes. "Mutandis" quest is called the next step in the mod's progression. One brew makes 6 Mutandis, and the quest tells you to extract all six products so the cauldron is cleared for next time. The quest says Mutandis is used to mutate small plants like saplings, and that bone meal and similar effects work against it, so don't force the change.[3][4]

Two more quests come after Mutandis. "Witcher-Trees" quest asks for the unique Alder Sapling, Hawthorn Sapling and Rowan Sapling, which the quest says you can get using oak, birch or acacia. It advises growing them into proper trees, since getting the saplings again could take even more Mutandis. "Witchy Plants" quest covers non-sapling Enchanted plants. The quest says Spanish Moss plays a key role in creating Poppets, so keep an eye out for it.[3]

Tier 3: The Altar

"The Altar" quest comes after both Witcher-Trees and Supernatural Scents. The quest describes the Altar as a 2x3 structure enhanced by items placed on it and buffed by nature in the surrounding 16 blocks. It says there are three categories of enhancing items, and only the highest tier of a category counts toward the Altar's power. Other witchy equipment in the Altar's area, such as the Distillery or Kettle, may require certain power levels.[3]

Three quests, each after The Altar, list the boosters:[3]

  • "Skulls" quest: a skeleton skull gives +1x base power and recharge speed, a wither skeleton skull gives +2x, and a player head gives +2.5x base power and 3x recharge speed.[3]
  • "Light" quest: a torch gives +0.5 recharge speed, a candle gives +1, and a Candelabra gives +2.[3]
  • "Chalice" quest: a standard Chalice gives +1x base power. A filled chalice gives +2x and is made by using Redstone Soup on a standard chalice.[3]

Tier 4: Attuned Stones, then the Distillery and Poppets

"Attuned Stones" quest calls the Attuned Stone the key point of progress. It comes after Supernatural Scents and Witcher-Trees, and the quest says making it allows progression into mechanics such as Poppets and Circle Magic.[3]

From here the book splits in two. "Distillery" quest comes after Attuned Stones. The quest says a Distillery has to be within an Altar's power area to function, and that like the oven it takes quite a few clay jars. It can create new kinds of resources and obtain oven fumes by other methods. "Distillery Products" quest follows it, and the quest names Gypsum and Tear of the Goddess as required for Circle Magic.[3]

"Poppetry" quest comes after both Anointing Paste and Attuned Stones. The quest says a Poppet is bound in a Spinning Wheel to set what sort of misfortune it redirects. It is then bound to its target using a filled Taglock Kit. The quest says a basic Poppet has a 30% chance for the trigger to fail, and that upgrades negate this. Sturdy Poppets can trigger twice, and Infused Poppets will have enhanced effects. A Poppet Shelf lets Poppets function wherever a target is. The pack has 26 Spinning Wheel recipes in total.[3][4]

Tier 5: Circle Magic and flight

"Circle Magic" quest comes after Distillery Products. The quest says a central glyph is placed with Golden Chalk, and circles are formed around it with Ritual Chalk. It says most rituals only need a single circle, a 7x7 ring, while a few advanced rituals may need a second circle forming an 11x11 ring.[3]

"Attuned Stone (Charged)" quest follows. The quest says a charged stone allows certain rituals and rites without setting up a new Altar at the circle's location. Charging it requires an advanced rite with 2 circles and an Altar nearby with at least 2,000 power.[3]

"Broom Flight!" quest is the other quest after Circle Magic. The quest says an advanced rite can infuse Flying Ointment into a broom to make the Enchanted Broomstick. It says the broomstick can be mounted like a boat or horse, with jump to ascend, sprint to descend and sneak to dismount as the default handling. The Bounty Board chapter also has a quest asking for the broomstick, and the book describes that chapter as repeatable quests for some extra cash.[3][9]

What this pack changes

  • The pack adds Farming for Blockheads market entries for the four herb seeds.[4]
  • The pack adds a Modern Industrialization compressor recipe that turns 9 saplings of any kind into a Wicker Bundle.[4]
  • The pack adds Create cutting recipes for alder wood, such as stripping logs and cutting planks into fences, fence gates and buttons.[4]
  • One of the pack's trade event lists has an entry that buys Tear of the Goddess and pays out 9 diamonds.[10]
Tip: The pack's loot script changes how alder, hawthorn and rowan leaves drop. They only drop themselves when broken with shears or a Silk Touch tool.[8]

How does Enchanted: Witchcraft work with other mods?

5 parts

Enchanted does not live in a bubble in this pack. The pack adds a handful of recipes that tie its items into other mods, and a couple of trade entries that use them too. Here is what I can confirm from the pack's own files.[4][10][11]

Leaves into Bio Fuel (Mekanism)

The pack adds Mekanism crushing recipes for the three witchy tree leaves: Alder Leaves, Hawthorn Leaves and Rowan Leaves. Each one crushes into 2 Bio Fuel. So if you grow Enchanted trees for the mod itself, the leaves have a second use as fuel.[4]

Watch out: The pack changes how these three leaves drop. A script removes their normal loot, so you only get the leaf block when you break it with shears (any modded shears count) or with a Silk Touch tool.[8]

Flying Carpet (Aeronautics and Fargo's Talismans)

The Kettle gets two pack-added recipes that make the Flying Carpet. Both use Flying Ointment, and they differ in which Aeronautics block they need: Levitite in one, Pearlescent Levitite in the other. Either way, the carpet comes out of the Kettle.[4]

Trades

The pack's trade event scripts also use Enchanted items. One entry buys Whiff of Magic and sells an Ars Additions codex entry. A separate trade list called after_iron buys Tear of the Goddess and sells 9 diamonds.[10][11]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Enchanted: Witchcraft?

5 parts

Enchanted has its own chapter in the quest book, called "Enchanted". It sits in the "Magic Mods" group as chapter 17 of 31 and holds 22 quests. The quests lead from your first herbs towards circle magic and the broom, and they branch a bit, so here is the order they unlock. Some quest texts describe a step as a stage for now, and the Anointing Paste quest is one example.[3]

Where you start

These quests have no prerequisite. "Entering Enchanted" quest asks for the Witch's Oven and a Clay Jar. "Toil and Trouble" quest asks for the Kettle. "Essential Herbs" quest asks for Belladonna Seeds, Snowbell Seeds, Water Artichoke Seeds and Mandrake Seeds. "Arthana" quest asks for the Arthana dagger and the drops it can give from slain creatures.[3]

The main path

  1. "Supernatural Scents" quest and "Fumes" quest unlock after Entering Enchanted. The first asks for the fumes the quest says you can collect from the oven. The second asks for the Fume Funnel and Fume Filter, which the quest says raise the chance of getting fumes.[3]
  2. "Mutandis" quest and a quest in "Enchanted" unlock after Toil and Trouble. The first asks for Mutandis, and the second asks for Redstone Soup.[3]
  3. "Witcher-Trees" quest and "Witchy Plants" quest unlock after Mutandis. The first asks for the Alder Sapling, Hawthorn Sapling and Rowan Sapling. The second asks for Spanish Moss, Ember Moss, Glint Weed and Blood Poppy.[3]
  4. "Anointing Paste" quest unlocks after Essential Herbs and asks for Anointing Paste. The quest says that for now the paste is needed to make the Witch's Cauldron, and that it will be used to craft Poppets later.[3]
  5. "The Altar" quest needs both Witcher-Trees and Supernatural Scents. "Attuned Stones" quest needs the same two quests and asks for the Attuned Stone.[3]
Watch out: The Mutandis and Witcher-Trees quests both say that bone meal and similar effects work against Mutandis, so the quests advise you not to force the change.[3]

Altar upgrades

Some quests unlock after The Altar and ask for things the quests describe as boosting its power or recharge speed: "Skulls" quest (skeleton skulls and a player head), "Light" quest (torches, candles and the Candelabra) and "Chalice" quest (the Chalice and its filled version).[3]

Distilling, poppets and circle magic

  1. "Distillery" quest unlocks after Attuned Stones and asks for the Distillery.[3]
  2. "Poppetry" quest needs both Anointing Paste and Attuned Stones. It asks for the Poppet, Taglock Kit, Poppet Shelf and Spinning Wheel.[3]
  3. "Distillery Products" quest unlocks after Distillery. It lists the Distillery's products, including Gypsum and Tear of the Goddess, which the quest says Circle Magic requires.[3]
  4. "Circle Magic" quest unlocks after Distillery Products and asks for Ritual Chalk, Golden Chalk and the Broom.[3]
  5. "Attuned Stone (Charged)" quest and "Broom Flight!" quest both unlock after Circle Magic. The first asks for the Attuned Stone (Charged). The second asks for Flying Ointment and the Enchanted Broomstick.[3]
Tip: The Attuned Stone (Charged) quest says charging a stone requires an advanced rite with 2 circles and an Altar nearby with at least 2,000 power. It adds that upgraded enhancements and a few nice trees in the area make that easy enough.[3]

Outside the Enchanted chapter

The mod shows up in one other chapter. The "Bounty Board" chapter (group "Exploration & Combat", chapter 11 of 31) has a quest named a quest in "Bounty Board" that asks for the Enchanted Broomstick. That chapter's intro says it holds repeatable quests that earn extra cash to spend at the shops.[9]

Which Enchanted: Witchcraft config options matter?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Enchanted splits its settings across a client, a common and a server config file. Most of the pack's values match the mod defaults, so there's only one real change to know about, plus a handful of settings worth understanding before you start brewing and casting.[12][13][14]

The one value the pack changed

The server config sets [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Altar Options.altar_range]] to 16, and that file lists the mod default as 32. So in this pack the altar range in that file is halved. Keep your altar setup compact and don't assume the larger default reach.[12]

The common config also sets [[config:config/enchanted-common.toml#Altar Options.altar_range]] to 16, and it lists 16 as the default there. The two files disagree about what the default is, but both use 16 in this pack.[12][14]

Unverified Which of the two altar range settings (server or common) takes priority in-game is not confirmed by the available sources.

Settings left at their defaults

  • [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Altar Options.altar_recharge_rate]] is 2. It's a multiplier for how fast altar power recharges, and it matches the mod default.[12]
  • [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Kettle Options.kettle_item_spoil]] and [[config:config/enchanted-common.toml#Cauldron Options.cauldron_item_spoil]] are both true. Dropping an incorrect item into a kettle or cauldron can spoil the brew, so add ingredients carefully.[12][14]
  • [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Miscellaneous Options.disable_totems]] is false. Totems of undying still work normally; the option exists to make poppets more useful.[12][14]
  • [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Miscellaneous Options.hoe_seeds]] is false. Modded seeds are not restricted to breaking grass with a hoe, so you can get them from grass the normal way.[1][12][14]
  • [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Circle Magic Options.disabled_rites]] is an empty list, so the pack doesn't disable any rites.[12][14]
  • [[config:config/enchanted-common.toml#Miscellaneous Options.ent_axe_multiplier]] is 3, the damage multiplier for axes against an Ent.[14]

Curses

Curse settings are also at their defaults. [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Curse Options.clumsy_chance]] is 0.02, the chance a clumsy player drops an item on each swing. Curses whisper to players every 120 to 240 seconds, set by [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Curse Options.curse_whisper_min]] and [[config:config/enchanted-server.toml#Curse Options.curse_whisper_max]].[12]

Client option

original_cat_type is false, so cat familiars render with the all-black look instead of their original fur colour. Set it to true if you'd rather see the original colours.[13]

What changed in Enchanted: Witchcraft between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships with Enchanted: Witchcraft 4.2.7. The mod has been in the pack since Aero 1.0.3 or earlier, so it's been part of the pack for a long time.[2]

The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so there's no record of the pack changing its values or recipes between releases.[2]

Enchanted: Witchcraft 4.2.7

The 4.2.7 changelog lists two fixes, and both apply to the version you get in Aero 1.10.0:[2][15]

  • The time field on rites now works in situations where it previously didn't.[15]
  • Certain kettle recipes no longer fail when you collect them using a bottle.[15]
