What is Farming for Blockheads?

1 part

Farming for Blockheads adds the Market, and in this pack it is a handy shortcut for getting farm supplies. Once you place it, it calls a local Farmer who sells most of the seeds and items you need for a good farm. The pack's quest book points out that this is especially useful in skyblocks, where you can't just wander off and find seeds.[1]

This pack ships Farming for Blockheads 21.1.13, and it has been in the pack since 1.0.3 or earlier.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The mod's quest is "The Market" quest. It lives in the "Cooking and Brewing" chapter, which is chapter 12 of 31 in the book and sits in the "Exploration & Combat" group. The chapter has 45 quests.[1]

The quest asks you to get a Market, and no prerequisite is listed for it, so nothing has to come before it. No other quest in the chapter lists it as a prerequisite either, so nothing is shown as coming directly after it. The rest of the chapter covers crop quests such as "Carrot Farm" quest and "Potato Farm" quest, plus kitchen building and potion brewing.[1]

Nothing in the quest data ties this mod to the ATM Star path.[1]

How do you get started with Farming for Blockheads?

3 parts

Step 1: The Market

Start with the Market. In this pack's quest book it is the quest "The Market" quest, in the Cooking and Brewing chapter (chapter 12 of 31, in the Exploration & Combat group), and no earlier quest is listed before it. Once you place it, a local farmer shows up who sells most of the seeds and items a good farm needs. The quest points out that this is especially handy in skyblocks, where you can't just go and find seeds.[1]

Step 2: Fertilizers

Next, look at the fertilizers. Green Fertilizer increases crop output. The mod's config text says Red Fertilizer gives a chance of a bonus growth. The Market also has trade entries for each of them, including Yellow Fertilizer, so you can buy them instead of crafting them.[3][4]

Tip: The Yellow Fertilizer recipe is marked as changed by the pack. If you have seen a different recipe in another pack, trust the one shown here.[3]

Fertilized farmland can turn back into regular farmland. The mod has a regression chance for this, applied per bonus provided, so don't expect one application to last forever.[4]

Unverified The actual chances for bonus crops, bonus growth and farmland regression are set in the mod's config, and the sources here do not show the pack's values.

        Step 3: Animal helpers

Once your crops are going, add the animal blocks. The Chicken Nest collects eggs laid by chickens. The Feeding Trough auto-feeds nearby animals that are ready to mate, which saves you feeding them by hand.[4]

How does Farming for Blockheads work?

        4 parts

Farming for Blockheads is built from a handful of simple blocks and items: a shop, an egg collector, an animal feeder and a set of fertilizers. Here is how each one behaves in the pack, as far as the sources explain it.[4]

        The Market

The Market opens a Market screen that reads "No Selection" until you choose something. The mod also adds a Merchant entity.[4]

        Recipe id: farmingforblockheads:market

What the Market sells is organised into groups. The built-in defaults are the seed, sapling and fertilizer groups. The mod can include or exclude whole groups, and an exclusion wins over an inclusion. Excluding the seeds group, for example, would remove every seed from the Market. It also supports presets that can be switched on or off, a list of names merchants can be given, and an option that treats merchants as babies on a technical level to close exploits based on merchant death loot.[4]

The Market also sells Green Fertilizer, Red Fertilizer and Yellow Fertilizer, so you can buy them instead of crafting them. The Market entries below show no item inputs, so the recipe dump does not tell us the price.[3]

Unverified Which groups and presets are enabled in this pack, and what each Market offer costs, is set in the mod's config, which the sources here do not show.

              Chicken Nest

The Chicken Nest collects eggs laid by chickens. It picks up laid eggs within a set range, and that range is a configurable option of the mod.[4]

              Feeding Trough

The Feeding Trough automatically feeds nearby animals that are ready to mate, which makes breeding much less hands-on. Its options control the range within which animals can be fed, and a maximum number of animals (counted per type) after which the trough stops feeding.[4]

              Fertilizers and Fertilized Farmland

Green Fertilizer increases crop output, and the mod gives it a chance to produce a bonus crop. Red Fertilizer instead has a chance to give a bonus growth. The mod also has Fertilized Farmland blocks, which come in several variants (healthy, rich and stable forms) that all share that name.[4]

The effect is not permanent. For each bonus the farmland provides, there is a chance it turns back into regular Farmland, so you will need to re-fertilize now and then.[4]

Each fertilizer can also be crafted. The recipes below are the in-pack versions, and each one makes 4 fertilizers.[3]

How do you progress through Farming for Blockheads?

              3 parts

The sources for this pack don't split Farming for Blockheads into tiers. What they show is a short path: the Market first, then the fertilizers, then the animal helpers. The pack's quest book only has a quest for the first step.[1][3]

              Step 1: Get the Market

The quest "The Market" quest sits in the Cooking and Brewing chapter, which is chapter 12 of 31 in the Exploration & Combat group. Its task is to get a Market. The quest says that once you place it, a local Farmer shows up and sells most seeds and items you need for a great farm. It also calls the Market especially useful in skyblocks, which is exactly what this pack is.[1]

This is the in-pack crafting recipe for the Market.

The same chapter also has farm quests for carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, onions and sweet berries, so the Market's seed stock fits nicely with those.[1]

              Step 2: Fertilizers

The mod has a red, a yellow and a green fertilizer: Red Fertilizer, Yellow Fertilizer and Green Fertilizer. The recipe data also lists Market recipes with no item inputs for these fertilizers. The crafting recipes are shown below.[3]

              Step 3: Animal helpers

Next come the Chicken Nest and the Feeding Trough. Both are listed as standard mod crafting recipes, with no pack changes.[3]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Farming for Blockheads?

              2 parts

Farming for Blockheads shows up in one quest in this pack: "The Market" quest. It sits in the "Cooking and Brewing" chapter, which is chapter 12 of 31 in the quest book, in the "Exploration & Combat" group. The chapter has 45 quests in total.[1]

              The Market quest

The quest asks you to get a Market. The quest text says that once you place it, it calls a local Farmer who sells most of the seeds and items you need for a good farm. It also says the Market is especially useful in skyblocks, which is exactly where you start in this pack.[1]

The chapter doesn't list any quest that has to be finished before this one, so you can pick it up whenever you reach the chapter.[1]

              Nearby farming quests

The same chapter has a handful of crop quests that each ask you to hand in a single item: "Sweet Berry Farm" quest, "Carrot Farm" quest, "Potato Farm" quest, "Cabbage Farm" quest, "Onion Farm" quest and "Tomato Farm" quest. None of them are tied to the Market in the quest book, and none of them have a quest listed before them.[1]

Tip: The rest of the chapter is about Farmer's Delight, Cooking for Blockheads and potion brewing. Those quests don't use the Market, but the Farmer's seeds can help you get your crops going.[1]
