What is Roots?
2 parts
Roots is part of the pack at version 4.0.0.31-alpha, so everything in this guide describes that alpha build. The sources I have don't include a mod description or an in-mod guidebook, so this overview covers where Roots shows up in the pack's quests rather than a full mechanics breakdown.[1]
You meet Roots very early. In the opening chapter, quest "Wooden Tools" quest asks you to make any wooden tool plus Wooden Shears. After that, Roots gets its own quest chapter.[2]
The Roots quest chain
The main line runs through the Roots chapter. Here is the order the quests unlock in:[3]
- Start with "The Root of Natural Magic" quest, which asks for Wildroot and Grove Spores.[3]
- Next comes a quest in "Roots 4", where you get a Runestone.[3]
- After the runestone, two quests open: a quest in "Roots 4" for the Pyre, and "Pestle and Mortar" quest for the Mortar and Pestle.[3]
- With the runestone and pyre done, a quest in "Roots 4" has you set up the Grove Crafter, Primal Grove Stone, Grove Pedestal and Grove Supplication.[3]
- The grove setup unlocks a quest in "Roots 4" (Runic Shears, Spiritleaf, Wildewheet), "Living Tools" quest (any one of the Living tools) and a quest in "Roots 4" (Elemental Soil).[3]
Side quests
- "Roots Mobs" quest asks for Antlers and Carapace, and it lists no prerequisite quest.[3]
- Once you have the pyre, you can also pick up "Creating Wildwood" quest (Wildroot Growth and Wildwood Log), a quest in "Roots 4" (Animal Harvest) and "Magical Herbs" quest (Bafflecap).[3]
- Outside the Roots chapter, "Living Sword" quest in the wild hunt chapter asks for a Living Sword.[4]
Unverified The sources don't show how Roots fits the wider pack progression, and there is no information on an ATM Star path for this mod. Check in-game before relying on either.
How do you get started with Roots?
6 parts
Roots has a clear starting path in this pack, because its quest chapter walks you through it step by step. Below is the order the quests follow, with the real in-pack recipes for each step.[3]
First, get Wildroot and Grove Spores
The first quest, "The Root of Natural Magic" quest, asks for Wildroot and Grove Spores. The pack adds Farming for Blockheads market entries for both of them, so that is where you can pick them up.[3][5]
Then make a Runestone
Next comes a quest in "Roots 4", which wants a Runestone. It is the key to the rest of the chapter: the Pyre quest, the Mortar and Pestle quest and the Grove Crafter quest all unlock after it.[3]
The pack lists several Runestone recipes with the same inputs; this is the first one.
Pyre, Mortar and Pestle
Once you have a Runestone, two quests open up. a quest in "Roots 4" asks for a Pyre, and "Pestle and Mortar" quest asks for a Mortar and a Pestle. Do the Pyre early, because most of the later quests unlock after it.[3]
Build your Grove Crafter
After the Runestone and the Pyre, a quest in "Roots 4" asks for a Grove Crafter, a Primal Grove Stone, a Grove Pedestal and the Grove Supplication ritual. The lang file describes an active Grove Stone as one activated by the ritual Grove Supplication, so that is how you wake a stone up.[3][6]

Side quests after the Pyre
The Pyre also unlocks some extra quests. "Creating Wildwood" quest wants Wildroot Growth and a Wildwood Log. a quest in "Roots 4" wants Animal Harvest. "Magical Herbs" quest wants a Bafflecap plus one of Wildroot, Wildewheet or Spiritleaf.[3]
What the Grove Crafter unlocks
With the Grove Crafter quest done, more quests open. a quest in "Roots 4" asks for Runic Shears, Spiritleaf and Wildewheet. "Living Tools" quest asks for any one living tool, and a quest in "Roots 4" asks for Elemental Soil.[3]
Runic Shears need the Wooden Shears from the early-game quest "Wooden Tools" quest. That quest also asks for a wooden tool, so grab both there.[2][5]

How does Roots work?
7 parts
Roots is built around Grove Stones, pyres, rituals, reputation and a handful of tools. Here is what the pack's config files confirm about how these systems work, and which values the pack changed.[7]
Grove Stones and grove power
A Grove Stone can be inactive or active. It becomes active through the ritual Grove Supplication. Fairy and Fungal variants exist, and each can be checked as active. Some in-world requirements accept a Grove Stone of any kind, active or inactive.[6]
Grove Stones have a power range. The pack leaves grove_stones.grove_stone_power_range_x, grove_stones.grove_stone_power_range_y and grove_stones.grove_stone_power_range_z at 30 each. These are half values, so the range extends 30 blocks from the stone along each axis.[7]
The area a Grove Stone affects grows with its rank. These are half values for the bounding box, and the pack keeps the mod defaults:[7]
- Rank 1: 3 blocks horizontally and 3 vertically (grove_stones.rank_1_grove_bounds_zx, grove_stones.rank_1_grove_bounds_y).[7]
- Rank 2: 8 blocks horizontally and 8 vertically (grove_stones.rank_2_grove_bounds_zx, grove_stones.rank_2_grove_bounds_y).[7]
- Rank 3: 15 blocks horizontally and 15 vertically (grove_stones.rank_3_grove_bounds_zx, grove_stones.rank_3_grove_bounds_y).[7]
- Rank 4: 30 blocks horizontally and 30 vertically (grove_stones.rank_4_grove_bounds_zx, grove_stones.rank_4_grove_bounds_y).[7]
Symmetry and rune pillars
Grove Stone setups can come with a symmetry requirement. The game describes these as follows:[6]
- None: no symmetry is required.[6]
- Radial same block: requires an identical block positioned radially around the grove stone.[6]
- Radial same block or tag: requires a matching block or a block from the same tag positioned radially around the grove stone.[6]
- Radial different, same tag: requires a different block from the same tag positioned radially around the grove stone.[6]
- Radial not matching: requires a non-matching block positioned radially around the grove stone.[6]
Some in-world conditions describe a rune pillar: a pillar of three (3) or four (4) runestone or runed obsidian blocks, topped with a chiseled runestone or runed obsidian block. The chiseled blocks are crafted from their tile versions, Runestone Tile and Runed Tile.[5][6]
Crafting Shaped

Crafting Shaped

Fungal Transmuter
The Fungal Transmuter draws power every tick. The pack sets fungal_transmuter.fungal_transmuter_power_per_tick to 50, up from the mod default of 1. It can store up to 5,000 power, which is the mod default for fungal_transmuter.fungal_transmuter_max_stored_power. Recipes for it show the Fungal Grove Power they need.[6][7]
Pyre, mortar and runic shears
- The Pyre has an area of effect set by pyre.pyre_bounds_x, pyre.pyre_bounds_y and pyre.pyre_bounds_z. Each is a half value of 10, unchanged from the defaults.[7]
- The mortar's pestle cooldown is 20 ticks in the pack, up from the mod default of 12 (mortar.pestle_cooldown).[7]
- Runic Shears work on an area, and the pack shrinks it to a half value of 3 on each axis. The mod defaults are 10 for X, 5 for Y and 10 for Z (runic_shears.aoe_bounding_box_x, runic_shears.aoe_bounding_box_y, runic_shears.aoe_bounding_box_z).[7]
Decorative versions of the Pyre and the Grove Pedestal exist for building, and both are crafted with a lever.[5]

Rituals and reputation
When rituals clash, the pack uses ritual_conflict.ritual_resolution_type set to AGE_PRIORITY, so the ritual started earliest wins. This applies to heavy storms versus protection. The other options are STORM_PRIORITY, where storms always change the weather, and PROTECTION_PRIORITY, where protection always suppresses storm effects.[7]
Conditions can ask for a reputation rank with the Cultivation, Elemental, Fairy, Fungal, Primal and Twilight Groves. The maximum rank with each of them is 4.[6]
The Untrue Pacifist advancement is tied to needlessly slaughtering one of nature's peaceful creatures. It is active in the pack because reputation_config.pacifist_disabled is false. The pack also sets debug.suppress_reputation_changes to true, so reputation changes are suppressed on the client. If you want to watch them, the common config has debug.debug_reputation, which is false in the pack and sends a message for every gain and loss when turned on.[6][7][8]
Soils and growth
Elemental Soil can be converted into other soils by crafting it with a herb. Aqueous Soil uses a dewgonia herb and Caelic Soil uses a cloud berry herb.[5]
Crafting Shapeless

- any dewgonia herb

Crafting Shapeless

Elemental crops can drop extra items when harvested. elemental_soil.elemental_crop_extra_drops is on, and the fallback chance in elemental_soil.elemental_crop_extra_drops_chance is 0.1. That chance only applies when a specific drop chance isn't already set elsewhere. Enchanted Turf takes 100 ticks to create a new grass block above it (enchanted_turf.enchanted_turf_ticks).[7]
Grass can drop aubergine seeds, grove spores and wildroot, and all of these drop options are enabled in the pack.[7]
Item handling quirks
- Pouches can automatically pick up herbs when you pick them up (pouches.pouch_herb_pickup is true).[7]
- Magnetism also moves experience orbs (magnetism.move_experience_orbs is true).[7]
- When you cast a spell, you get a low-herb alert once the remaining amount of a herb drops below the minimum in alerts.herb_minimum_alert. It is 0.5 here, and the config notes the default is the higher of the herb's cost and 0.5.[7]
- The Charm Of Alertness effect lasts 200 ticks (alertness.duration), with the sound (alertness.sound) and visual effect (alertness.visual) both on.[5][7]
Unverified No in-jar guidebook was found for Roots, so the sources here do not show how to build a working Grove Stone, how rituals are performed, or whether Roots blocks accept automation through hoppers, pipes or fluids. Check these in-game, for example in JEI, before relying on them. This site does hold FTB Skies 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
How do you progress through Roots?
6 parts
In this pack, Roots progression is a quest chain in the Roots chapter rather than a set of named tiers. The order below follows each quest's prerequisites. The quests are untitled, so each stage is named after the items it asks for.[3]
Stage 1: Getting started
The chain opens with "The Root of Natural Magic" quest, which asks for Wildroot, Grove Spores and one more item task. You don't have to hunt for the first two, because the pack adds market entries for both Wildroot and Grove Spores.[3][5]
There's also "Roots Mobs" quest, which wants Antlers and Carapace. It has no prerequisite in this chapter. The pack has recipes for the Antler Hat and for the Beetle Helmet, Beetle Chestplate, Beetle Leggings and Beetle Boots.[3][5]
Over in The Beginning chapter, "Wooden Tools" quest asks for a wooden tool and Wooden Shears. You'll want those shears later for the runic shears.[2][5]
Stage 2: Runestone
a quest in "Roots 4" unlocks after the first quest and asks for Runestone. The pyre, mortar and Grove Crafter quests all come after it. Besides the crafting recipe below, there are stonecutting recipes for Runestone Brick, Runestone Tile and Chiseled Runestone that give plain runestone.[3][5]

Automating the crops
The pack adds cloche recipes for Spiritleaf and Wildewheet. They take Spiritleaf Seeds or Wildewheet Seeds on a soil. Plain dirt works, and so do the other soils and farmlands the recipes list. That gives you a way to grow the crops the later quests ask for.[5]
How does Roots work with other mods?
5 parts
Roots is mostly self-contained, but this pack ties it into several other mods through recipes the pack adds itself. The links fall into four groups: growing Roots crops in a cloche, stripping Wildwood, turning Wildwood Leaves into fuel, and crafting the Creative Pouch.[5]
Growing Roots crops in the Cloche
The pack adds Immersive Engineering Cloche recipes for four Roots crops: Aubergine, Moonglow, Spiritleaf and Wildewheet. Each one pairs the crop's seeds (Aubergine Seeds, Moonglow Seeds, Spiritleaf Seeds, Wildewheet Seeds) with a soil from another mod.[5]
The soils come from several other mods, and all four crops accept the same set:[5]
- Just Dire Things: Primogel Soil, Blazebloom Soil, VoidShimmer Soil and Shadowpulse Soil.[5]
- Mystical Agriculture: Inferium Farmland, Prudentium Farmland, Tertium Farmland, Imperium Farmland and Supremium Farmland.[5]
- Mystical Agradditions: Insanium Farmland.[5]
- Farmer's Delight: Rich Soil.[5]
Here is one of the Aubergine recipes as an example. The other crops follow the same pattern with their own seeds.[5]
Cloche (immersiveengineering)
Recipe id: ftb:cloche/aubergine_from_rich_soil
The pack adds this Cloche recipe, and the other soils and crops use the same pattern.
Stripping Wildwood with Create
The pack adds Create cutting recipes for Wildwood. Cutting Wildwood Log gives you Stripped Wildwood Log plus Tree Bark from Farmer's Delight. Cutting Wildwood Wood gives Stripped Wildwood Wood, also with bark.[5]

Wildwood Leaves into Bio Fuel
If you have spare Wildwood Leaves, the pack adds a Mekanism crushing recipe that turns them into Bio Fuel.[5]
The Creative Pouch
The pack adds a shapeless KubeJS recipe for the Creative Pouch. It combines a Sylvan Pouch with Creative Ascension.[5]
Quests
The tasks I can read in the Roots quest chapter (roots_4) name only Roots items, so that chapter does not ask you to bring items from other mods.[3]
Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Roots?
4 parts
Roots appears in the quest book in the "roots_4" chapter, plus a quest each in "the_beginning" and "the_wild_hunt". The quests have no titles in the pack files, so I refer to them by their IDs.[2][3][4]
The roots_4 chapter
This chapter walks you through the mod. "The Root of Natural Magic" quest and "Roots Mobs" quest have no prerequisite, so you can start with either. The main line then runs from the first of them through the Runestone quest.[3]
- "The Root of Natural Magic" quest is a starting quest. It asks for Wildroot, Grove Spores and an additional item task that the source doesn't name.[3]
- "Roots Mobs" quest is the other starting quest, and nothing has to come before it. It asks for Antlers and Carapace.[3]
- a quest in "Roots 4" unlocks after "The Root of Natural Magic" quest and asks for a Runestone.[3]
- a quest in "Roots 4" comes after the Runestone quest and asks for a Pyre.[3]
- "Pestle and Mortar" quest also comes after the Runestone quest. It asks for a Mortar and a Pestle.[3]
- a quest in "Roots 4" needs both the Runestone and Pyre quests. It asks for Grove Crafter, Primal Grove Stone, Grove Pedestal and Grove Supplication.[3]
Branches after the Pyre
Once the Pyre quest is done, these quests open up, and you can take them in any order.[3]
- "Creating Wildwood" quest asks for Wildroot Growth and a Wildwood Log.[3]
- a quest in "Roots 4" asks for Animal Harvest and has a checkmark task.[3]
- "Magical Herbs" quest asks for any of Wildroot, Wildewheet or Spiritleaf, plus a Bafflecap.[3]
Branches after the Grove Crafter quest
These quests unlock once you finish a quest in "Roots 4".[3]
- a quest in "Roots 4" asks for Runic Shears, Spiritleaf and Wildewheet.[3]
- "Living Tools" quest accepts any of the Living tools: Living Sword, Living Axe, Living Pickaxe, Living Shovel or Living Hoe.[3]
- a quest in "Roots 4" asks for Elemental Soil and an additional item task that the source doesn't name.[3]
Quests in other chapters
- In "the_beginning", "Wooden Tools" quest asks for any wooden tool (shovel, pickaxe, axe, hoe or sword) together with Wooden Shears. It unlocks after an earlier quest in that chapter.[2]
- In "the_wild_hunt", "Living Sword" quest asks for a Living Sword. The source lists no prerequisite for it.[4]
Which Roots config options matter?
5 parts
Most of the Roots config in this pack matches the mod's defaults, but a few values were changed on purpose. Those are the ones that will actually change how you play, so we start with them.[7]
Values the pack changed
- runic_shears.aoe_bounding_box_x, runic_shears.aoe_bounding_box_y and runic_shears.aoe_bounding_box_z are all set to 3 in this pack. The mod defaults are 10 for X, 5 for Y and 10 for Z, so the area your Runic Shears cover is smaller here.[7]
- mortar.pestle_cooldown is 20 ticks in this pack, up from the mod default of 12. That is the wait after using a pestle on a mortar. Setting it to -1 would remove the cooldown.[7]
- fungal_transmuter.fungal_transmuter_power_per_tick is 50 in this pack, while the mod default is 1. That is the amount of power the Fungal Transmuter consumes per tick.[7]
Grove Stone and Pyre ranges
The Grove Stone power range is 30 on each axis, set by grove_stones.grove_stone_power_range_x, grove_stones.grove_stone_power_range_y and grove_stones.grove_stone_power_range_z. The Pyre area is 10 on each axis, set by pyre.pyre_bounds_x, pyre.pyre_bounds_y and pyre.pyre_bounds_z. All of these match the mod defaults.[7]
The area of effect of each Grove Stone rank is also at the mod default. These are half values, and the X/Z and Y options share the same number for each rank:[7]
- Rank 1: 3, set by grove_stones.rank_1_grove_bounds_zx and grove_stones.rank_1_grove_bounds_y.[7]
- Rank 2: 8, set by grove_stones.rank_2_grove_bounds_zx and grove_stones.rank_2_grove_bounds_y.[7]
- Rank 3: 15, set by grove_stones.rank_3_grove_bounds_zx and grove_stones.rank_3_grove_bounds_y.[7]
- Rank 4: 30, set by grove_stones.rank_4_grove_bounds_zx and grove_stones.rank_4_grove_bounds_y.[7]
Other gameplay options
- ritual_conflict.ritual_resolution_type is AGE_PRIORITY. When a heavy storms ritual and a protection ritual conflict, whichever ritual started earliest wins. The other allowed values are STORM_PRIORITY and PROTECTION_PRIORITY.[7]
- Grass can drop aubergine seeds, grove spores and wildroot, since grass_drops.drop_aubergine_seeds, grass_drops.drop_grove_spores and grass_drops.drop_wildroot are all true.[7]
- Elemental crops can drop extra items when harvested (elemental_soil.elemental_crop_extra_drops is true). The fallback chance in elemental_soil.elemental_crop_extra_drops_chance is 0.1, and it only applies when the data map doesn't give a specific chance.[7]
- enchanted_turf.enchanted_turf_ticks is 100 ticks, the time Enchanted Turf takes to create a new grass block above it.[7]
- Pouches automatically pick up herbs (pouches.pouch_herb_pickup is true), and magnetism also moves experience orbs (magnetism.move_experience_orbs is true).[7]
Structures
The barrow, hut, ruined hut and standing stones structures are all enabled in the structure toggle config, for example barrow.barrow and hut.ruined_hut.[9]
- Barrow: spacing 90 (barrow.spacing) and separation 45 (barrow.separation).[10]
- Hut: spacing 50 (hut.spacing) and separation 35 (hut.separation).[10]
- Standing stones: spacing 60 (standing_stones.spacing) and separation 35 (standing_stones.separation).[10]
Client options
On the client side, debug.suppress_reputation_changes is true, so reputation changes aren't displayed. The 'press keybind to view eligible recipes' HUD message is switched off (messages_and_highlights.show_insert_overlay_message is false), while the in-world message over eligible blocks and the block highlight stay on. Particles are enabled, and the custom particle shader is neither disabled nor forced.[8]
