What is Glassential Renewed?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.46 guide

Glassential Renewed is a building-focused mod that adds special glass types without the overhead of a big content mod. The project page pitches it as the cool glass you see in mods like Extra Utilities, such as glass that blocks light or glass that glows, in one lightweight package.[1]

The pack includes version 3.0.0 of the mod, built for NeoForge 1.21.[2]

What it adds

  • Luminous Glass emits light, just like Glowstone.[1]
  • Redstone Glass emits a strong redstone signal, just like a Block of Redstone.[1]
  • Ghostly Glass is non-solid to all entities of any kind.[1]
  • Ethereal Glass is non-solid to players, while Reverse Ethereal Glass is only solid to players (and fluids).[1]
  • Tinted Ethereal Glass and Tinted Reverse Ethereal Glass combine the properties of vanilla Tinted Glass with their Ethereal counterparts.[1]
  • Glass doors, glass trapdoors and glass slabs, plus doors and trapdoors made of all the Glassential blocks and dyed stained glass doors and trapdoors.[1]
  • Frameless panels from all the glasses of the mod.[1]

The mod also replaces the vanilla glasses with connected-texture versions, and it supports connected textures through Fusion. The project page says Fusion has been required since version 2.1.0.[1]

Who it is for

This is a mod for builders. If you want a glowing window, a wall you can walk through, or a glass block that outputs a redstone signal, this is where you get them. It's handy for bases, hidden entrances and redstone-driven builds, and it doesn't ask you to learn a whole tech or magic system.[1]

Where it fits in progression

Unverified The sources I have don't show any quests involving this mod, and it isn't on the ATM Star path. They also don't say where the glasses unlock in progression, so treat it as a building-utility mod you can use whenever you like. Check the in-game recipes to see what each block needs. This site does hold FTB Skies 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you get started with Glassential Renewed?

5 parts

Glassential Renewed is a building mod that adds several special kinds of glass, plus doors, trapdoors, panes and slabs to go with them. Here is the order I'd make things in, and why.[1]

Luminous Glass for light

Start with Luminous Glass. It emits light just like Glowstone, so you get a see-through light source for your base.[1]

Glass doors and slabs

Next, grab the simple pieces: Glass Door and Glass slab. They are the basic building blocks for windows and entrances.[1][3]

The mod also has frameless panes for all of its glasses. The tooltip says they are frameless when inserted between blocks, which makes for clean windows.[1][4]

Glass you can walk through

Ethereal Glass is not solid to players. Its sibling Reverse Ethereal Glass is the opposite and is only solid to players. If you want something even looser, Ghostly Glass is not solid to entities of any kind.[1][4]

Tip: Doors and trapdoors exist for the other glass types too, for example Ethereal Glass Door, Ghostly Glass Door and wood-type versions like Acacia Glass Door. Use their recipes when you want matching entrances for your base.[1][3]

How does Glassential Renewed work?

6 parts

Here's the honest picture: Glassential Renewed has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluid and item handling. It's a building mod made of glass blocks, panes, doors and trapdoors. The 'mechanics' are how each kind of glass behaves when you, mobs, redstone or water interact with it. This section covers what the sources confirm about that.[1]

Collision: who can walk through

Most of the special glasses change who counts as solid. Ethereal Glass is not solid to players, so you can walk straight through it while everything else still treats it as a wall. Reverse Ethereal Glass is the opposite: it is only solid to players (and fluids).[1][4]

Ghostly Glass goes further and is non-solid to all entities of any kind. The tinted versions, Tinted Ethereal Glass and Tinted Reverse Ethereal Glass, combine those ethereal behaviors with the properties of vanilla Tinted Glass.[1][4]

Light, redstone and protection

  • Luminous Glass emits light, just like Glowstone.[1]
  • Redstone Glass emits a strong redstone signal, just like a Block of Redstone.[1]
  • Protected variants are resistant to explosions. The protected doors and trapdoors work like their iron counterparts.[4]

Fluids and special glass

Clear Fluid Glass removes the near-surface water face behind the glass, which gives you a crystal-clear view into an aquarium or underwater base. It is crafted like this:[3][4]

Recipe id: glassential:clear_fluid_glass

There is also Clear Fluid Fake Glass, which is made from the clear fluid glass. The sources don't explain how it differs in behavior, so check it in-game before relying on it.[3]

The mod's tooltips also describe a few other glass types. Gravity glass softens a fall and has no collision. Thermal ice glass holds ice that doesn't melt. Lava lamp glass is a natural lantern that burns like magma. I couldn't confirm the exact item names or recipes for these from the sources, so I'm not linking them.[4]

Colorable glass and the brush

Colorable Glass and Colorable Stained Glass let you change color and properties with the Glassential Brush. Each also has a pane version, Colorable Glass Pane and Colorable Stained Glass Pane.[3][4]

The brush's tooltips explain how to use it: right-click to configure, and Shift + right-click any block to copy its color. The configuration screen shows Entity Passthrough and Player Passthrough toggles, so you can set colorable glass to let entities or players through.[4]

The tooltips also describe a one-way glass. It is transparent from one side and solid from the other, and you right-click a face with any block to disguise that side.[4]

Doors, trapdoors and panes

Every glassential glass has matching doors and trapdoors, and the mod adds frameless panes for all its glasses. The tooltips say panes are frameless when inserted between blocks. Wooden glass doors and trapdoors, such as the Acacia one, are crafted like this:[1][3][4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: glassential:acacia_glass_door

Doors for the special glasses are made straight from the glass block, for example the Ethereal Glass Door:[3]

Crafting Shaped

6 × Ethereal Glass

Recipe id: glassential:ethereal_door

Tip: Since version 2.1.0 the mod requires Fusion for its connected textures, and vanilla glasses are replaced with connected-texture versions. That's why your glass walls look seamless.[1]

Config

The config file has no gameplay settings. According to its comments, items is a list of items to log on common setup, and the pack sets it to the iron ingot. logDirtBlock is true and controls whether the dirt block is logged on setup. magicNumber is 42, the same as the mod default, and magicNumberIntroduction is the message shown before that number.[5]

How do you progress through Glassential Renewed?

6 parts

Glassential Renewed is a crafting-chain mod, so this section follows the recipes in the pack from the simplest pieces up to the specialty glasses. The tier names are just a handy order for you to work through. Each recipe is shown exactly as the pack has it.[3]

First step: basic glass pieces

The entry level is the plain family of Glass slab, Glass Door and Glass TrapDoor. The slab and trapdoor recipes are shown below.[3]

Next: light, redstone, ice and obsidian glass

Next come the glow and signal variants: Luminous Glass, Redstone Glass, Ice Glass and Obsidian Glass. Tinted versions of the luminous and redstone glass also exist, and they build on the untinted blocks. The lamps, such as Glowstone Lamp, use Luminous Glass as a base.[3]

Then: ethereal and ghostly glass

Ethereal Glass and Ghostly Glass are the starting points for this family. Reverse Ethereal Glass and Ethereal Glass can be converted into each other in either direction, so you can flip between them. The tinted ethereal glass, Tinted Ethereal Glass, has several recipes.[3]

Finally: iron and gravity glass

Doors, trapdoors and panes

Panes, doors and trapdoors exist across the glass types, including Ethereal, Ghostly, Luminous, Obsidian and Tinted Ethereal. The vanilla wood types have their own glass doors and trapdoors, such as Oak Glass Door and Cherry Glass Trapdoor. Iron Glass Door is also available, and so are colored glass doors such as Blue Glass Door.[3]

Unverified The sources here show no quests in this pack's quest book that involve Glassential Renewed, and no in-game guidebook was found for it, so this section follows the crafting recipes only.

How does Glassential Renewed work with other mods?

2 parts

The clearest link between Glassential Renewed and another mod in this pack is through the Connecting stained glass blocks. The pack adds stonecutting recipes that turn those blocks into Glassential's glass trapdoors.[3]

Connecting glass to glass trapdoors

Put a Connecting glass block in a stonecutter and you can cut it into the trapdoor of the same color. For example, Connecting Black Stained Glass becomes a Black Glass Trapdoor, and Connecting Blue Stained Glass becomes a Blue Glass Trapdoor.[3]

Black Glass TrapdoorAdded by the pack

Stonecutting

Recipe id: minecraft:kjs/glassential_black_glass_trapdoor

The black version, a stonecutting recipe added by the pack. The other colors follow the same pattern.

The same pattern covers every dyed color: white, orange, magenta, light blue, yellow, lime, pink, gray, light gray, cyan, purple, blue, brown, green, red and black. Tinted glass works too, with Connecting Tinted Glass giving you a Tinted Glass Trapdoor.[3]

These recipes are added by the pack, not by either mod itself, so don't assume the same stonecutting route exists in other modpacks.[3]

Tip: If you already build with Connecting glass, the stonecutter is a handy way to get matching trapdoors in the same color.[3]

Connected textures

Glassential Renewed's project page says it has required Fusion since version 2.1.0, and that it fully supports connected textures through Fusion.[1]

Which Glassential Renewed config options matter?

1 part

Good news: Glassential Renewed has very little to configure in this pack. The only file shown is the common config, and its options are about logging on common setup and a message built around a magic number.[5]

What this pack sets

  • items is set to a list containing only minecraft:iron_ingot. The config describes it as a list of items to log on common setup.[5]
  • logDirtBlock is set to true. It controls whether the dirt block is logged on common setup.[5]
  • magicNumber is set to 42, which is also the mod default. It must be greater than 0.[5]
  • magicNumberIntroduction is set to "The magic number is... ". The config describes it as the introduction message for the magic number.[5]
Tip: Only the magic number shows a mod default in the pack's file (42), and the pack keeps it. For the other options the file does not show a mod default, so you can't tell from it whether the pack changed them.[5]

What changed in Glassential Renewed between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Glassential Renewed 3.4.5. The mod has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[6]

Mod releases

  • 3.4.5: Rain, snow and clouds now show through plain glass and One Way Glass. Coloured, stained and functional glasses still block weather like in vanilla, because they need partial alpha for their tint.[7]
  • 3.4.4: Fixed a StackOverflowError crash when a One Way Glass was disguised as another One Way Glass. It could crash on placement and corrupt the world so it crashed on every load. Affected worlds now load fine.[8]
  • 3.4.2: Added Tinted One Way Glass. Water faces next to Clear Fluid Glass are now culled. One Way Glass faces now connect via Fusion CTM like the rest of the glass blocks, on both sides of the block.[9]
  • 3.3.2: A hotfix for a missing tinted glass trapdoor registration. Glass Slab connection is now nearly perfect. Tinted Ethereal Glass Pane and Tinted Reverse Ethereal Glass are now actually tinted. Ghost Glass and Gravity Glass no longer place in water. Also fixed a survival mode damage problem with Clear Fluid Fake Glass.[10]
  • 3.2.1: Added the lava lamp, the glowstone lamp (both with tinted versions) and iron glass. The redstone glass door and trapdoor now emit a redstone signal. Ethereal doors and trapdoors now follow the collision rules of block forms.[11]
  • 3.1.8: Added an impermeable tag for all glasses, which disables drip particles.[12]
Tip: If you build with One Way Glass, 3.4.4 matters: older versions could corrupt a world when one One Way Glass was disguised as another. Since the pack is on 3.4.5, you get that fix.[6][8]

Unverified The changes in 3.4.1 are not shown in the sources available here, and there are no pack changelog entries for this mod.
