What is BBL Strainers?
BBL Strainers adds strainers, blocks you use to find items in water and other blocks. The mod contains the water strainer block, which collects different items depending on what you put in its slots.[1]
The mod's project page shows that a strainer recipe can depend on the block placed on top as well as the items in the slots. Different combinations give different results.[1]
The recipes are fully customizable. A single recipe can have up to 9 different outputs, and each output has its own count and its own chance value.[1]
This pack includes BBL Strainers 6.13.0, and the mod has been in the pack since version 0.0.11 or earlier.[2]
How do you get started with BBL Strainers?
4 parts
BBL Strainers is all about the Strainer block: you put items in its slots, and what comes out depends on what you put in. The pack's recipe dump lists 92 strainer recipes that make 26 different results, so there is a lot to dig into. Here is the order I would go in.[1][3]
Craft the Strainer
Everything starts with the Strainer. This is the in-pack crafting recipe.[3]

Make a mesh
Meshes matter because the mod's recipe screen shows a bonus chance per level above a recipe's minimum mesh tier. A better mesh can therefore improve your results. The pack has meshes for wood, flint, copper, iron, gold, diamond, emerald and netherite. Here is the recipe for the Wooden Mesh.[3][4]

When you want to upgrade, each of the others has its own recipe: Flint Mesh, Copper Mesh, Iron Mesh, Gold Mesh, Diamond Mesh, Emerald Mesh and Netherite Mesh.[3]
Collect leaf piles and make mulch
Leaf Pile drops when you break leaves with a Stick. Strainer recipes filed under leaves also give Stone Pebble, Sapling Bag (What's inside!) and Flower Bag (What's inside!).[3][4]
Leaf piles are crafted into Mulch.
Strainer recipes filed under mulch make Dirt Pile, Water Drop, Stone Pebble and more sapling and flower bags.[3]
Work up through dirt and gravel
The next recipe groups are filed under dirt and gravel. Dirt recipes give Purified Dirt, Gravel Pebble and Stone Pebble. Gravel recipes give Purified Gravel, Sand Dust, Eroding Drop and Purifying Drop. Purified Dirt also has a recipe that gives a Seed Bag (What's inside!).[3]
Further down the line, the pack has strainer recipes for Purified Deepslate, Purified Netherrack, Purified End Stone and Purified Dust Block. It also has a long list of Ore Piece recipes, many of them filed under the names of other mods.[3]
How does BBL Strainers work?
4 parts
Everything in BBL Strainers revolves around one block, the Strainer. The mod's project page describes it as a block that collects different items depending on what is in its slots. The rest of the mod (meshes, purified blocks, fluids) feeds into that one idea.[1][4]
How a straining recipe works
The project page gives examples of the idea. One recipe needs a diamond block on top, plus a diamond and a dirt. Another needs a lava block on top, plus obsidian and gravel. Recipes are fully customizable, and each one can have up to 9 different outputs, each with its own count and chance. Those are the mod's own examples, so check the recipe viewer for what this pack actually uses.[1]
In this pack there are 92 straining recipes, producing 26 different results.[3]
The recipe viewer text in the mod's language file shows more rules:[4]
- Some recipes need fluid. The viewer tells you either that a recipe requires a certain amount of fluid or that it will consume it.[4]
- Mesh tier matters. A recipe has a minimum mesh tier, and the viewer shows an additional percentage for each level of mesh above that minimum.[4]
Meshes
The mod has meshes in these materials: Wooden Mesh, Flint Mesh, Copper Mesh, Iron Mesh, Gold Mesh, Diamond Mesh, Emerald Mesh and Netherite Mesh. Their recipes use a recipe type from BBL Core, and the Netherite Mesh recipe is shown below.[3][4]

The pack adds a top tier of its own. A new Allthemodium Mesh is added to the tier 12 mesh tag, and it is crafted from a Netherite Mesh with AllTheModium ingots. That recipe copies the enchantments of the Netherite Mesh onto the result, so you keep any enchantments you put on it.[5]
Unverified Which mesh belongs to which tier is set in the mod's tier mesh tag data files. The sources here do not show those lists, so the exact tier of each mesh is not confirmed.
Purified blocks and the recipes that use them
The mod adds purified blocks: stone, deepslate, dirt, gravel, sand, dust block, soul sand, soul soil, netherrack and end stone. Recipe ids in the pack group the straining recipes by the block they belong to.[3][4]
For basic materials, the pack has cobblestone recipes that give a Gravel Pebble. One of them has "low" in its id.[3]
The rest of the straining recipes listed for the pack are compatibility recipes that give an Ore Piece. The item is named "%s Ore Piece", and the viewer fills in the material. The older per-metal ore pieces are labelled in the language file as items that will be removed in a future mod update. The generic Ore Piece is the only one in the ore pieces item tag. Here is what the listed compat recipes are filed under:[3][4][6]
- AllTheModium: purified deepslate, purified end stone and purified netherrack, with a recipe each.[3]
- EvilCraft: purified gravel, with a dark gem recipe.[3]
- Forbidden Arcanus: purified gravel, with arcane crystal, runic and stellarite recipes.[3]
- Mystical Agriculture: purified dust block (inferium and prosperity) and purified soul sand (soulium).[3]
- Powah: purified gravel, with uraninite recipes (the base one plus dense, poor and regular).[3]
- Silent: purified dust block, with alexandrite, ammolite and aquamarine recipes.[3]
Only 19 of the 92 straining recipes are written out in the data I have, so this is not the full list.[3]
Fluids, bags and by-products
The mod has special fluids: Eroding Water, Purifying Water and Salty Water. Each has a bucket and a drop item. Right clicking with a fluid drop creates a source block of that fluid, and the drops can also fill tanks the way a bucket would.[4]
There are also Sapling Bags and Seed Bags. A Sapling Bag places a random sapling on dirt or grass when you right click. A Seed Bag places a random seed on farmland. The strainer screen has an "Enable / Disable Drops" option.[4]
Leaf Piles come from breaking leaves with a Stick.
How do you progress through BBL Strainers?
5 parts
BBL Strainers progression is all about what you run through the Strainer and which mesh you put in it. The block you strain decides what comes out, and the outputs of one stage become the inputs of the next. This page follows that chain using the pack's own recipes.[3]
Getting started
Everything starts with the strainer itself. When you break one, the item keeps the fluids it was holding, so you can move a working setup without losing what is inside.[3][7]

The strainer is a normal crafting table recipe.
The strainer recipes in this pack make 26 different results across 92 recipes. They are filed by the block being strained, so you can see the whole tree just from the recipe ids.[3]
Stage 1: raw blocks
The first stage covers the basic blocks. Each one has its own outputs:[3]
- Cobblestone gives Gravel Pebble.[3]
- Dirt gives Purified Dirt, Gravel Pebble and Stone Pebble.[3]
- Leaves give Leaf Pile, Flower Bag (What's inside!), Sapling Bag (What's inside!) and Stone Pebble.[3]
- Mulch gives Dirt Pile, Water Drop, Flower Bag (What's inside!), Sapling Bag (What's inside!) and Stone Pebble.[3]
- Sand gives Purified Sand, Dust Block and Salt Water Drop.[3]
- Gravel gives Purified Gravel, Eroding Drop, Purifying Drop and Sand Dust.[3]
- Netherrack gives Purified Netherrack and Lava Drop.[3]
- Deepslate gives Purified Deepslate, end stone gives Purified End Stone, and a dust block gives Purified Dust Block.[3]
You can also craft a couple of these blocks directly. Mulch comes from leaf piles, and dust blocks can be crafted from dust.[3]
Leaf piles from straining leaves turn into mulch here.
Stage 2: purified blocks to ore pieces
The purified blocks are where the ore comes from. Strain them and you get Ore Piece items, which come in many variants.[3]
- Purified gravel has the widest range: coal, copper, iron, gold, lead, tin, zinc, nickel, silver, platinum, aluminum, osmium, uranium, lapis, diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire, topaz, peridot, fluorite and sulfur.[3]
- Purified netherrack gives gold, quartz and netherite scrap ore pieces.[3]
- Purified dust blocks give redstone and cinnabar ore pieces.[3]
- Purified sand gives salt.[3]
- Purified deepslate gives Sculk Dust, and purified dirt gives Seed Bag (What's inside!).[3]
Modpack compat drops
This pack also has strainer recipes for modded materials. Purified deepslate, purified end stone and purified netherrack each have an Allthemodium-family ore piece recipe: allthemodium, unobtainium and vibranium respectively.[3]
Other compat recipes cover Forbidden Arcanus (arcane crystal, runic and stellarite from purified gravel), Powah uraninite in four grades, EvilCraft dark gem, Mystical Agriculture (inferium, prosperity and soulium), Theurgy sal ammoniac, and a long list of Silent Gear gems, plus crimson iron and rose quartz.[3]
Meshes
Meshes are the upgrade path. The mod groups them into tier tags from tier 1 up to tier 12, and a single meshes tag collects all of them.[8]
The pack has crafting recipes for these meshes. Each one is crafted with a BBL Core copy-style shaped recipe:[3]

Unverified The sources here do not show which tier each mesh belongs to. That lives in the tier mesh tag files of the strainers data (tier_1_meshes to tier_12_meshes), which are not included. They also show no quest chapter for BBL Strainers, so there is no quest-guided path to describe.
What changed in BBL Strainers between versions?
4 parts
All the Mods 11 0.10.0-beta ships BBL Strainers 6.13.0, and the mod was already in the pack as of 0.0.11 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]
6.13.0: the version in this pack
- Added the Flower Bag. It works like the Seed and Sapling Bag but for flowers, and it can be configured.[9]
- Bags were buffed to a 0.75 chance of increasing the composter level, and each bag now has its own color particles when used.[9]
- Bags now show what can come from them in JEI. Press U on a bag to view it.[9]
- Several recipes got fixes for wrong ids, missing tag conditions and incorrect values. Mod-specific recipes moved to strainers:strainer/compat/mod/block/result.[9]
Fluid handling (6.4 to 6.12)
- 6.4.2: Strainers with fluids inside now render a glass block around the fluid.[10]
- 6.10.2: Fixed salty water blockstate errors and a crash when a recipe has no fluid.[11]
- 6.11.0: The Strainer calculates the total amount of fluid before the recipe starts. Its screen has a Fluid Amount icon showing how much fluid the current recipe needs and whether that fluid is consumed.[12]
- 6.11.1: Fluids now work correctly in world.[13]
- 6.11.3: The Strainer can now be crafted to clear the fluids inside.[14]
- 6.12.2: Fixed the Strainer sometimes not allowing fluids to be added.[15]
Progression and balance
- 6.3.7: Mesh recipes now require the previous tier, so you craft the meshes in order instead of skipping to the best one.[16]
- 6.5.0: Added Mulch, several Purified blocks, Dirt Piles, Salty Water and the Depleted Drop, which you get when fluid drops are used. Most ores now come from purified blocks.[17]
- 6.5.0: Mulch is crafted with leaf piles and can be strained for Bone Meal, Stone Pebbles, Dirt Piles and Water Drops. Leaf Piles can be obtained by breaking any leaves with a stick, and Water Drops were removed from leaves. The changelog calls these balance changes work in progress.[17]
- 6.5.1 and 6.5.2: Added a Sapling Bag from Mulch recipe, and Gravel Pebbles are no longer obtained from leaves (this is now the stone pebble).[18][19]
- 6.6.0: Strainers can be broken and replaced, and now have 50 output slots with a scrolling GUI. The changelog also says recipe tweaks were coming to revert most ores back to purified gravel.[20]
- 6.7.1: The effects of fortune on ores were increased.[21]
- 6.8.2: Added mesh tiers 9, 10, 11 and 12. There are currently no meshes in these tiers, and they are mainly used for pack development.[22]
- 6.10.6: Sal Ammoniac is now at tier 3 instead of tier 7.[23]
