What is Theurgy?

3 parts

Theurgy is an open-source magic mod built around classical alchemy. You use it to replicate and transmute matter and to create magical artifacts. This pack includes version 1.114.0.[1][2]

It skips the usual four elements of air, water, fire and earth. Instead it works with sulfur, salt and mercury, and you handle them through a group of processes called Spagyrics.[1]

Who it's for

If you like alchemy-style magic but find some mods too overpowered or too complicated, this one is aimed at you. The author describes it as a balanced alchemy experience: not as overpowered as Equivalent Exchange, but maybe more practicable than the legendary Thaumcraft.[1]

Learning it in-game

The mod's guide book is called The Hermetica. It is built with Modonomicon, a mod for Thaumonomicon-style in-game books, and it is meant to be your guide to everything alchemy. Follow the steps in the book to work your way up to master alchemist.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't show how The Hermetica is obtained in this pack, so check that in-game before relying on the mod's default recipe. This site does hold All the Mods 11's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Where it fits in the pack

Unverified The sources I have don't confirm where Theurgy sits in this pack's progression, whether it connects to the ATM Star path, or whether any quests involve it, so I'm not making claims about those.

How do you get started with Theurgy?

5 parts

Theurgy is an alchemy mod built around Sulfur, Salt and Mercury. You work with them through a group of processes called Spagyrics, to replicate and transmute matter. Here are the first things to build, in a sensible order. The order comes from what each machine's tooltip says it needs, not from an official checklist.[1][3]

First, get The Hermetica

The Hermetica is the in-game guide book for the whole mod, and the mod's own page tells you to follow the steps in it. Craft it first. The recipe below is the one this pack uses.[1][4]

Next, build a heat source

The Calcination Oven, Mercury Distiller, Liquefaction Cauldron and Incubator all say to place them on top of a heating device, and each tooltip names the Pyromantic Brazier as an example. Make the brazier before the machines that sit on it.[3]

Then extract Salt, Mercury and Sulfur

Each of the three principles has its own apparatus, and each one sits on your brazier. Right-click them with ingredients to load them.[3]

  • The Calcination Oven extracts Alchemical Salt from items. Salt represents the "body" or "physical matter" of an object.[3][4]
  • The Mercury Distiller extracts Alchemical Mercury from items. Mercury represents the "energy" of an object and works both as an energy source and as a catalyst.[3][4]
  • The Liquefaction Cauldron extracts Alchemical Sulfur from items using a Solvent. Sulfur represents the "idea" or "soul" of an object and is the key to replication and transmutation.[3][4]

Calcination recipes turn many items into Alchemical Salt Creature. There are recipes for things like beef, bones, feathers, eggs and ender pearls, so common drops make good first experiments.[4]

Recombine with the Incubator

The Incubator recombines Sulfur, Salt and Mercury into items. It also sits on a heating device. It needs a vessel for each of the three types placed horizontally next to it: Incubator Sulfur Vessel, Incubator Salt Vessel and Incubator Mercury Vessel. You fill each vessel by right-clicking it with the matching alchemical material.[3][4]

Heat things remotely and move up a tier

The Caloric Flux Emitter heats an apparatus from a distance. Sneak-right-click the apparatus to set it as the target, then place the emitter on a Mercury Flux source such as a Mercury Catalyst. This pack has two recipes for the emitter, one from a campfire and one from a lava bucket.[3][4]

Once the basics work, the vats are the next step. The Digestion Vat is required for exaltation, which converts matter between tiers, for example between common and rare. The Fermentation Vat is required for transmutation, which converts matter between types, for example between metals and gems. Both are loaded by right-clicking with ingredients, and shift-right-clicking with an empty hand opens or closes the vat to start or stop processing.[3][4]

How does Theurgy work?

8 parts

Theurgy's machines are built around the alchemical principles of Sulfur, Salt and Mercury. Most of what you do is take items apart into those principles, then recombine or convert them. This section covers how the machines, heat, flux and logistics fit together. The Hermetica guide book in-game goes deeper on some of it.[1]

Heating the apparatus

The Calcination Oven, Mercury Distiller, Liquefaction Cauldron and Incubator all sit on top of a heating device. The simplest one is the Pyromantic Brazier. Put it below the apparatus, then right-click it with a fuel item, or feed it with a hopper.[3][4]

If you don't want a brazier under every machine, the Caloric Flux Emitter heats an apparatus remotely. Sneak-right-click the apparatus to set it as the target. Then place the emitter on a Mercury Flux source such as a Mercury Catalyst, and it shoots Caloric Flux at the apparatus.[3]

Splitting items into Sulfur, Salt and Mercury

  • Calcination Oven: extracts Alchemical Salt, which represents the physical matter of an object. Right-click it with ingredients to place them inside.[3][4]
  • Mercury Distiller: extracts Alchemical Mercury, the energy of an object. Mercury works both as an energy source and as a catalyst. Right-click it to add ingredients.[3][4]
  • Liquefaction Cauldron: extracts Alchemical Sulfur, the idea or soul of an object, using a Solvent. Sulfur is the key to replication and transmutation.[3]

Recombining with the Incubator

The Incubator turns Sulfur, Salt and Mercury back into items. It needs a vessel for each of the three, placed horizontally next to it: the Incubator Sulfur Vessel, Incubator Salt Vessel and Incubator Mercury Vessel. Right-click each vessel with the matching alchemical material to fill it so the incubator can use it.[3][4]

The vats

The Digestion Vat is required for exaltation and converts between tiers of matter, for example common to rare like iron to gold. The Fermentation Vat is required for transmutation and converts between types of matter, for example metals to gems.[3][4]

Both vats work the same way. Right-click with ingredients to put them in. Shift-right-click with an empty hand to close or open the vat, which starts or stops processing.[3]

Mercury Flux

The Mercury Catalyst turns mercury from crystal form into flux form, which is pure energy for certain processes. Right-click it with mercury shards and they are slowly consumed to fill its internal flux storage.[3]

The Mercury Capacitor is a large flux store, holding up to 10x the flux of a Mercury Catalyst. It can receive and send flux to adjacent blocks.[3][4]

The Mercury Flux Emitter moves flux from the block it is attached to into a target block. Right-click the target block to link it, then place the emitter on a Mercury Flux source block.[3]

Solvent from Sal Ammoniac

The Sal Ammoniac Accumulator evaporates water to concentrate residual Sal Ammoniac. The resulting fluid is a Solvent for your Liquefaction Cauldrons. Place the accumulator on top of a Sal Ammoniac Tank and right-click it with water buckets. The water is consumed to fill the tank below. Adding Sal Ammoniac Crystals to the accumulator speeds the process up.[3]

Reformation pedestals

Reformation converts one Alchemical Sulfur into another using three pedestals. The Reformation Source Pedestal holds the Sulfur you want to reform. The Reformation Target Pedestal holds the Sulfur it should become. The result appears in the Reformation Result Pedestal.[3][4]

Mercurial Logistics

Automation uses a wired network. The Mercurial Item Extractor pulls items out of a block into the network, and the Mercurial Item Inserter pushes items into a block. The fluid versions are the Mercurial Fluid Extractor and Mercurial Fluid Inserter. For all of them, right-click the target block with the device to place it, then right-click the device with a cable to connect it to the network.[3][4]

Use the Mercurial Connection Node to join multiple wires, linking it to other nodes or logistics blocks. The wire item is Mercurial Copper Wire.[3][4]

The Mercurial Flux Connector moves Mercury Flux or NeoForge Energy (FE) between blocks through the network. It automatically balances flux between connected blocks. FE goes through a separate transfer channel and is not converted into Mercury Flux.[3][4]

The Logistics Capability Probe marks the block it is attached to as a target for a linked proxy. The Logistics Capability Proxy connects to one or more probes with wires. It forwards capability access to the probes' target blocks in round-robin order.[3][4]

To link networks over long distances or between dimensions without wires, craft a pair of Logistics Nexuses. Nexuses with matching IDs connect their attached networks across any distance. Attach Connection Nodes to each nexus and wire them into the rest of the network.[3]

Tip: Not sure which machine you need? Remember the split: Salt comes from the Calcination Oven, Mercury from the Distiller, and Sulfur from the Liquefaction Cauldron. All three need heat.[3]

How do you progress through Theurgy?

4 parts

Unverified The quest sources here show no Theurgy quests, so there is no quest-driven order to follow. The order below comes from the in-game guide's chapters and the in-pack recipes, and it is not an official unlock path. This site does hold All the Mods 11's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Your best map for Theurgy is the in-game book, The Hermetica. Its chapters are Getting Started, Apparatus and Logistics. Start with Getting Started, then move on to the machines, then to logistics.[4][5][6][7]

Getting Started has entries on divination rods, on converting within a type and tier, and on converting to another tier. That makes it the right place to learn how the mod thinks about tiers before you build anything big.[8][9][10]

Divination rod tiers

The clearest tier ladder in the mod is the divination rods. There are four numbered tiers: Glass Divination Rod, Iron Divination Rod, Diamond Divination Rod and Netherite Divination Rod. They are named Glass, Iron, Diamond and Netherite. Divination Rod: Amethyst is a separate rod outside the numbered tiers. The recipes are shown below.[4]

Machines you can craft

The machines in the mod include the Calcination Oven, Liquefaction Cauldron, Digestion Vat, Fermentation Vat, Mercury Distiller and Incubator. Alongside them sit the Pyromantic Brazier and Caloric Flux Emitter. The incubator also uses the Incubator Salt Vessel, Incubator Sulfur Vessel and Incubator Mercury Vessel.[4]

Calcination recipes turn many vanilla items, such as bones, feathers, leather, ender pearls and nether stars, into Alchemical Salt Creature. Each input has its own calcination recipe.[4]

Sal Ammoniac in this pack

The pack adds smelting and blasting routes to Sal Ammoniac Crystal, and the mod also makes the crystal from a Sal Ammoniac bucket. Sal Ammoniac itself comes from accumulation, either from water alone or from water plus a crystal. The Sal Ammoniac Accumulator recipe is shown below.[4]

      Logistics and later pieces

Further along you will meet the Mercury Catalyst, the Mercury Capacitor and the Mercurial Wand. There is also a set of mercurial logistics parts, including the Mercurial Connection Node, item and fluid extractors and inserters, and filters. A reformation array is built around the Reformation Source Pedestal, Reformation Target Pedestal and Reformation Result Pedestal.[4]

What changed in Theurgy between versions?

      2 parts

All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta ships Theurgy 1.114.0, built for 26.1.2 on NeoForge, and Theurgy has been in the pack since 0.0.1 or earlier. The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so everything below comes from Theurgy's own release notes. Here are the highlights, newest first.[2]

      Recent changes

      • 1.114.0: a performance fix. Wire sync no longer scans every chunk, and uses per-player reference counting instead.[11]
      • 1.111.0: Theurgy moved to Modonomicon 2.0.0, and its conditions were updated to research conditions. The Japanese translation was also updated for 26.1.2.[12]
      • 1.109.0: updated to a stable Neo release.[13]
      • 1.106.0: the wand now responds to either vertical or horizontal scrolling.[14]

      Earlier changes

      • 1.94.0: updated to the latest Modonomicon, and now includes cdg via jarinjar.[15]
      • 1.91.0: Theurgy now uses a custom Modonomicon book item. 1.90.0 before it updated to a new Modonomicon.[16][17]
      • 1.89.0: bug fixes restored filter slot interactions, and restored divination rod visibility and particle stacking.[18]
      • 1.88.0: added the logistics nexus.[19]
      • 1.87.0: added FE support to mercury flux transport, plus an omnibus round of fixes and refactors. Block entity updates now use native update serialization.[20]
      • 1.85.0: logistics inserter targets are now backfilled regardless of link order, and a logistics network cache crash fix was forward-ported to 26.1.2.[21]
      • 1.83.0: added the Mercury Capacitor block, the Mercury Flux Emitter block and a berry-based fermentation starter recipe.[22]
      • 1.82.1: the Occultism dependency was updated.[23]

If you're building with mercury flux or logistics, the 1.83.0 to 1.88.0 releases are the ones to remember, since that is when the capacitor, the emitter, FE support and the logistics nexus arrived.[19][20][22]
