What is BBL Core?

3 parts

BBL Core is a library-style mod by benbenlaw. Its project page describes it as a set of useful methods, utilities and helpers that make coding mods a bit better, and it is aimed at both mod developers and modpack developers. This pack ships version 12.6.8.[1][2]

Who it is for

You won't build anything with BBL Core directly. Other mods and the pack's own setup use it behind the scenes. If you're making your own modpack or mod, though, it has tools worth knowing about.[1]

What it offers

For modpack makers, the project page lists the following features:[1]

  • Changed nether portal frame blocks, and removal of the void line in skyblock and void worlds.[1]
  • Optional void protection that sends a player back to their home when they take void damage, which is handy for skyblock and End protection.[1]
  • Configurable /modpack and /discord commands, plus a modpack update checker that uses a modpack id set in the config.[1]
  • World-type-specific recipes and loot tables, and a climbable tag (bblcore:climbable_blocks) that lets any block be climbed.[1]
  • A fix for the vanilla issue where sleeping doesn't set the time to day in custom dimensions.[1]
  • A /recipeID command that lists all recipes for the item you're holding. Adding a mod id after it shows only the recipe ids added by that mod, which is useful for finding ids to remove.[1]
  • An Upgrade Base item.[1]

For mod developers, it has an easy fluid system, colored tags (add a block or item to bblcore:tintable/color to tint it), helper utilities for the mouse, tooltips and directions, and lightable items that can create light.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

BBL Core is not on the ATM Star quest path, and no quests in this pack involve it. No in-jar guidebook was found for it either, so there is no progression step to follow.[2]

Unverified Which of the modpack features above are enabled or configured in this pack has not been confirmed from the available sources.

How do you get started with BBL Core?

2 parts

BBL Core is a support mod, not something you build a base around. Its project page describes it as a collection of useful methods, utilities and helpers for mod and modpack developers, so there is no first item to craft and no progression to follow.[1]

Nothing in this pack gives you a recipe for it, and no quests involve it. That's why this section has no recipe blocks. You won't be crafting anything from BBL Core to get started.[1]

What you can actually use

  • Tooltip hints: items from mods that use BBL Core can show prompts like "Press SHIFT for more info", with matching ones for ALT and CTRL. When you see one, hold that key to read more about the item.[3]
  • The /recipeID command: hold an item and run it to get all recipes for that item. Add a mod id, as in /recipeID modID, to list only the recipe ids for the held item that were added by that mod. The project page says this is handy for finding recipe ids to remove.[1]
  • Modpack commands: the mod adds a /modpack command and a /discord command, and both can be configured.[1]

Other things the mod can do

The project page also lists a few world-level features: changed nether portal frame blocks, no void line in skyblock and void worlds, and optional void protection that respawns a player at their home after void damage. It also fixes a vanilla problem where you can't sleep to set the time to day in a custom dimension.[1]

Pack makers can also make any block climbable by adding it to the bblcore:climbable_blocks tag. It's a tool for the pack's authors, so you don't need to do anything with it.[1]

Unverified The project page says BBL Core adds an Upgrade Base item, but nothing available here confirms how you get it or whether it's used in this pack. Which of the optional features above are switched on in this pack's configs is also unconfirmed.

How does BBL Core work?

5 parts

BBL Core is a library mod for mod and modpack developers, so it isn't a machine or multiblock mod that you build with directly. Its project page describes a set of utilities and modpack features instead, and that is what this section covers.[1]

Modpack features

The project page lists these modpack-focused features:[1]

  • Changed nether portal frame blocks.[1]
  • Removal of the void line in skyblock and void worlds.[1]
  • Optional void protection that respawns a player at their home when they take damage from the void. The page says it can be enabled and is useful for skyblock and end protection.[1]
  • A /modpack command and a /discord command, which can both be configured.[1]
  • A modpack update checker. You add the modpack id to the config and get told when there is a modpack update.[1]
  • The ability to add world type specific recipes and loot tables.[1]
  • A fix for a vanilla issue where you can't sleep to set the time to day in a custom dimension.[1]
  • An Upgrade Base item.[1]

Climbable blocks

The mod adds a tag called bblcore:climbable_blocks. According to the project page, adding a block to this tag allows that block to be climbed.[1]

The /recipeID command

This one is handy if you like digging into recipes. Hold an item and run /recipeID to get all recipes for it. Run /recipeID followed by a mod id to get the recipe ids for the held item that were added by that mod. The page says this is useful for finding recipe ids to remove.[1]

Developer-side tools

For mod developers, BBL Core has an easy to implement fluid system that makes adding fluids to their own mods simpler. It also has colored tags: if a block or item uses a tintable model, adding it to the tag bblcore:tintable/color gives it that tint. On top of that come helper utilities for mouse, tooltips and directions, plus lightable items that can be used to create light.[1]

Tooltip hints

You may see tooltips from this mod telling you to hold a key for more details. The mod has prompts for SHIFT, CTRL and ALT, each reading "Press [key] for more info". Which items show which prompt isn't covered in the sources.[3]

Unverified Which of the optional features above (void protection, the update checker, the /modpack and /discord commands) are enabled in this pack is set in the mod's config, and the sources here do not show that config.

What changed in BBL Core between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta ships BBL Core 12.6.8, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.0.11 or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]

12.6.x

  • 12.6.8: ShapedComponentCopyRecipe no longer requires all components in the recipe to be present on the item being copied from. This is the version your pack uses.[2][4]
  • 12.6.7: The test fluid was disabled.[5]
  • 12.6.5: The version range was updated, and SimpleAbstractContainerMenu no longer freezes when slot size restrictions are used.[6]
  • 12.6.4: Fluids can now set temperatures in the builder.[7]
  • 12.6.2: Old configs no longer generate.[8]
  • 12.6.1: Helper methods were made static.[9]

12.5.x

  • 12.5.9: A leftover Core KubeJS piece from 1.21.1 was removed.[10]
  • 12.5.8: Added an extra renderFluid method that takes a fluid stack and a capacity instead of a fluid handler and slot. It is useful for tanks that hold a single fluid with a constant capacity.[11]
  • 12.5.7: Whitelist button text, duration tooltips and text from the fluid rendering utilities no longer render behind items and fluids. Mods that use these no longer need to re-add their own rendering to make it look right. The changelog also says double tooltips when holding shift on items that already have a shift tooltip were hopefully fixed.[12]
  • 12.5.6: The client load mixin was disabled, because it was causing issues with curios.[13]
  • 12.5.5: Added the Shard resource type.[14]
  • 12.5.4: FluidRenderingUtils#renderFluid gained a tooltip parameter, which defines a component to display when the tank is empty.[15]

"From pack files" means the list came from the pack's own files; "from the published release" means ForgeBase read the jars of the release itself.

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as bblcore, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
