What is Pylons?
1 part
Pylons is a compact "magic block" mod. Each pylon is a single block that does one useful job for your base, and this pack ships version 5.4.2. You get four of them: the Harvester Pylon, Infusion Pylon, Interdiction Pylon and Expulsion Pylon.[1][2]
- The Harvester Pylon is a very simple auto-farm. Put it on or in your farm's water source and it harvests and replants fully grown crops in a 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 area. It needs a hoe inside it and an inventory such as a chest above it.[1][3]
- The Infusion Pylon is like a better, cheaper beacon. It keeps giving you the effect stored in a Potion Filter with no range limit, although it may need to be chunkloaded.[1][3]
- The Interdiction Pylon blocks mob spawns. Each Mob Filter holds 1 mob. A Lifeless Filter stops every natural spawn in a 25x25 chunk area at every Y level, but it does not stop spawners or spawn eggs.[3]
- The Expulsion Pylon is made for servers. It keeps players who aren't whitelisted out of 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunks around it, and you whitelist friends with a Player Filter.[1][3]
This mod is for you if you want quality-of-life upgrades without building big machines. It covers hands-off crop farming, permanent buffs, spawn-proofing without lighting up every cave, and protecting your base on a multiplayer server.[1][3]
Where it fits in this pack
The pack gives Pylons its own quest chapter. In that chapter, each pylon's quest follows the quest for the filter it uses. The Potion Filter quest a quest in "Pylons" leads to the Infusion Pylon quest a quest in "Pylons". The Player Filter quest a quest in "Pylons" leads to the Expulsion Pylon quest a quest in "Pylons". The Mob Filter quest a quest in "Pylons" and the Lifeless Filter quest a quest in "Pylons" both lead to the Interdiction Pylon quest a quest in "Pylons". The Harvester Pylon has its own quest, a quest in "Pylons".[3]
How do you get started with Pylons?
4 parts
Pylons are single blocks that each do one handy job: farming your crops, keeping potion effects on you, stopping mob spawns, or keeping other players out of your base. Most of them get their behavior from filters you slot into them. So the usual rhythm is: craft the pylon, craft the matching filter, then set the filter up by right-clicking something with it.[3][4]
Step 1: Automate your crops with the Harvester Pylon
A great first pylon is the Harvester Pylon, a very simple auto-farm that works with no filter at all. Place it inside the water block of your farm. It harvests fully grown crops and replants them in an area you choose, anywhere from 3x3 to 9x9 blocks around the pylon. Put an inventory like a chest on top of it to catch the crops. Its quest is a quest in "Pylons".[3][4]

Step 2: Permanent buffs with the Infusion Pylon
Next, start on the Potion Filter (a quest in "Pylons"). To fill it, get a potion effect on yourself, then right-click with the filter to pull the effect off you and into the filter. Repeat until it's filled and active. The quest notes this also works with modded effects and with effects you can't normally get from potions, like Haste or Resistance.[3]

By default, the smallest duration you can extract is 60 seconds, and a filter needs 1 hour of total duration to activate. If you have two filters with the same effect, hold one in each hand and right-click to combine them.[4]
Once a filter is active, put it into an Infusion Pylon (a quest in "Pylons"). The pylon keeps giving you the effect no matter how far away you are. By default it also loads the chunk it sits in while its owner is online. This pack changed the Infusion Pylon recipe, so check the block below rather than the mod's default.[3][4][5]

Step 3: Stop mob spawns with the Interdiction Pylon
For spawn control, you have two filters to pick from. A Mob Filter (a quest in "Pylons") holds one mob: right-click the mob you want gone to set it, or click a different mob to swap it. To block Zombies, Skeletons, Spiders, Creepers and Endermen, you'd need 5 filters. The Lifeless Filter (a quest in "Pylons") blocks all natural spawns, hostile or passive, in a 25x25 chunk area at every Y level. It has no whitelist, and it doesn't stop mobs from spawners or spawn eggs.[3]

Both filters go into the Interdiction Pylon (a quest in "Pylons"). With Mob Filters, it blocks natural and forced spawns of those mobs within a range you choose, from 1x1 to 5x5 chunks. A Lifeless Filter overrides those settings and disables any other mob filters in the pylon. This pack changed the Interdiction Pylon recipe.[3][4][5]

Step 4 (servers): Keep players out with the Expulsion Pylon
If you're on a server, the Expulsion Pylon (a quest in "Pylons") pushes non-whitelisted players out of a 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunk area, which you set in its GUI. It can't be placed too close to spawn. By default the pylon's owner isn't expelled, and OPs are always whitelisted. To let a friend in, right-click them with a Player Filter (a quest in "Pylons") and put the filter in the pylon. This pack changed the Expulsion Pylon recipe.[3][4][5]

How does Pylons work?
7 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Pylons is a small magic-block mod, and its systems are simple. You place a pylon, give it filters, and it works over a chunk range or block range. Every pylon described here can be toggled automatically with redstone. Power only comes up for one block, the Harvester Pylon.[1][4]
Filters
Filters tell a pylon what to target. You bind each one by right-clicking: a Mob Filter on a mob, a Block Filter on a block, and a Player Filter on a player. The Potion Filter works differently: you right-click with it while you have an active potion effect.[4]
The pack also has shapeless crafting recipes that take a Mob Filter, Player Filter or Potion Filter and return the same item. These are the "clear" recipes. The sources don't say exactly what they reset, so check a filter in-game after using one.[6]
Expulsion Pylon
The Expulsion Pylon expels other players from a chunk range you select, from 1x1 up to 5x5 chunks. Put a Player Filter in it to whitelist players. OPs are whitelisted automatically. Team members are too, if team support is enabled.[4]
In this pack general.teamSupportEnabled is true, but it only has an effect if a compatible mod (FTB Teams or Argonauts) is installed. expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonMaxRadius is 2, the mod's maximum. The center chunk isn't counted, so a radius of 2 gives the 5x5 chunk area.[7]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionAllowedDimensions limits it to the Overworld, The Beyond, Eternal Starlight and the Compact Machines world in this pack.[7]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonCanExplode is false, so explosions can't destroy the pylon.[7]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionWorldSpawnRadius is 1. It sets an area around world spawn where the pylon can't operate, but it only counts if it is larger than the world spawn radius gamerule.[7]
The pack changed this pylon's recipe, so don't rely on the mod's default.[6]

Harvester Pylon
The Harvester Pylon harvests crops in a 3x3 to 9x9 block range around it and outputs to an inventory above. Place it inside the water block of your farm, or level with the crops.[1][4]
By default it needs a hoe inside the pylon and uses 1 durability per harvest, unless the hoe is unbreakable. Unbreaking and other durability enchants are supported. This pack keeps that default: harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool is true and harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower is false.[4][7]
The pack changed one value. harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay is 20 ticks between harvest attempts, where the mod default is 60.[7]
Power and automation
The harvester can use RF instead of durability, and this is the only power use the sources describe. If you enable harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower, the tool requirement is disabled and each block harvested costs RF. It is off in this pack, so these numbers only apply if you change the config. The cost is set by harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerCost (5 in this pack) and the buffer by harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerBuffer (1,000 in this pack). The config notes say to keep the buffer greater than the cost per block times 80.[4][7]
For tool-based farms, harvester_pylon.harvesterCanBeAutomated is false in this pack. The config comment says this controls whether tools can be piped in, and that unbreakable tools are required for full automation by default. Unbreakable hoes, such as Mystical Agriculture's Supremium Hoe, can be used.[1][7]
Infusion Pylon
The Infusion Pylon applies effects to you from any distance, using activated Potion Filters. To activate a filter, get the effect on yourself (from a potion, for example) and right-click with the filter in hand. That extracts the effect's duration into the filter.[1][4]
- infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration is 60 seconds, so the effect on you must have at least that much left to be extracted.[4][7]
- infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration is 3,600 seconds (1 hour), which is equivalent to 7.5 vanilla extended potions. A filter needs that much stored before it is active.[1][4][7]
- To combine duplicate filters, hold one in each hand and right-click. The off-hand filter's duration is added to the main-hand one.[1][4]
- infusion_pylon.infusionAppliedDuration is 20 seconds. That is the maximum duration applied to you, refreshed up to that amount every 60 ticks.[7]
- infusion_pylon.infusionMaximumPotency is 3. It is 0-indexed, so a Resistance V potion would be potency 4.[7]
By default the pylon chunkloads itself while its owner is online, limited to one pylon per player (infusion_pylon.infusionChunkloads is true in this pack). That is how it keeps working when you are far away.[4][7]
Some effects are blocked. infusion_pylon.infusionAllowedEffects is empty, which allows everything not denied. infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects blocks minecraft:absorption, tombstone:ghostly_shape, irons_spellbooks:heartstop, irons_spellbooks:evasion, irons_spellbooks:abyssal_shroud and relics:immortality. The denied list overrides the allowed list.[7]
The pack changed the recipe for this pylon too.[6]

Interdiction Pylon
The Interdiction Pylon prevents natural and forced spawns of the mobs you specify within a 1x1 to 5x5 chunk range. Add Mob Filters to choose which mobs to block.[4]
The Lifeless Filter works differently. It blocks all mobs, but only natural spawns, and raises the range to 25x25 chunks. It also disables other mob filters in the pylon.[4]
The pack changed this recipe as well.[6]

Protection Pylon
The Protection Pylon stops its owner from breaking blocks or killing mobs within a 1x1 to 5x5 chunk range, which helps if you want to avoid accidents. Add Mob Filters and Block Filters to choose which mobs and blocks are protected.[4]
How do you progress through Pylons?
6 parts
Pylons doesn't use numbered tiers in this pack. Each pylon is its own branch in the quest chapter, and you usually craft a filter first because it unlocks and powers the pylon that comes after it. The only exception is the Harvester Pylon, which needs no filter, so it's a good first build.[3]
How the quest chapter is laid out
- Farming branch: a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Harvester Pylon and has no filter quest in front of it.[3]
- Buff branch: a quest in "Pylons" (the Potion Filter) leads into a quest in "Pylons" (the Infusion Pylon).[3]
- Base protection branch: a quest in "Pylons" (the Player Filter) leads into a quest in "Pylons" (the Expulsion Pylon).[3]
- Spawn control branch: a quest in "Pylons" (the Mob Filter) and a quest in "Pylons" (the Lifeless Filter) both lead into a quest in "Pylons" (the Interdiction Pylon).[3]
Starting out: the Harvester Pylon
The Harvester Pylon is a very simple auto-farm. Put it on or in the water source, give it a hoe, and put an inventory such as a chest above it. Once you turn it on, it harvests and replants fully grown crops around it. You can set the area to 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 blocks.[3]

Buffs: Potion Filter into Infusion Pylon
To fill a Potion Filter, you need to have a potion effect on you. Right-click with the filter to take the effect off you and store it. Repeat until the filter is full and active. This works with modded effects too, and with effects you can't normally get from potions, like Haste or Resistance.[3]

Keeping players out: Player Filter into Expulsion Pylon
The Expulsion Pylon keeps players who aren't whitelisted out of an area around it. You set that area in the top left of its GUI: 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunks. You can't place it too close to spawn. By default, the pylon's owner is never pushed out.[3]
To let a friend stay, right-click them with a Player Filter and put the filter into the pylon to whitelist them. This pack has changed the Expulsion Pylon recipe.[3][5]

How does Pylons work with other mods?
2 parts
Pylons is fairly self-contained in this pack. Every task in its quest chapter asks for a Pylons item, such as the Infusion Pylon or the Harvester Pylon. Where it really connects with the rest of the pack is in what you feed into the pylons.[3]
Modded potion effects in the Infusion Pylon
The Potion Filter isn't limited to vanilla potions. The pack's quest points out that filling it also works with modded potion effects, and even with effects you can't usually get from potions, like Haste or Resistance. So if another mod gives you an effect, you can capture it. Have the effect on you, right-click with the Potion Filter to move it from you into the filter, and repeat until the filter is filled and active.[3]
Once that filter goes into an Infusion Pylon, the pylon keeps giving you the effect no matter where you are, with no set radius like a Beacon has.[3]
Hoes for the Harvester Pylon
The Harvester Pylon needs a Hoe to work on your plants, plus an inventory like a chest above it to collect the crops.[3]
By default, the pylon uses 1 durability from the hoe for every crop it harvests. The mod page says you can use unbreakable hoes from other mods instead, and it gives Mystical Agriculture's Supremium Hoe as an example. That way you never have to swap in a fresh hoe.[1]
Unverified The pack files provided don't confirm whether this pack changes the Harvester Pylon's hoe durability setting, or whether the Supremium Hoe is obtainable here.
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Pylons?
4 parts
All of the questing for Pylons happens in its own chapter called Pylons. The chapter is built as a few short branches: most of the Pylons need a matching filter first, so you'll usually grab the filter quest and then unlock the Pylon that uses it. Here's each branch in the order the quests unlock.[3]
Mob control: filters, then the Interdiction Pylon
- a quest in "Pylons" ("He's uninvited!") asks for a Mob Filter. To set it, you click the mob you never want to see again with the filter in hand. Each filter holds only 1 mob, so blocking Zombies, Skeletons, Spiders, Creepers and Endermen takes 5 Mob Filters. You can swap the stored mob by clicking a different one.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" ("Finally peace and quiet.") asks for a Lifeless Filter. It stops every natural mob spawn, hostile or passive, in a 25x25 chunk area at every Y level above and below the Pylon. It has no whitelist, and it doesn't stop forced spawns like spawners or spawn eggs.[3]
- Once both filter quests are done, a quest in "Pylons" unlocks and asks for an Interdiction Pylon. You can stack multiple Mob Filters in it and adjust its Working Area. If you put in a Lifeless Filter, it ignores those settings.[3]
Potion effects: Potion Filter, then the Infusion Pylon
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Potion Filter. To fill it, you need the effect on yourself. Right-click with the filter to move the effect from you into the filter, and repeat until it's filled and active. The quest says this also works with modded effects and with effects you can't normally get from potions, such as Haste or Resistance.[3]
- That unlocks a quest in "Pylons", which asks for an Infusion Pylon. It works like a better Beacon: it gives you the effect from its Potion Filter continuously, with no set radius, so it reaches you wherever you are.[3]
Keeping players out: Player Filter, then the Expulsion Pylon
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Player Filter. Right-click a player with it to store them, then put it into an Expulsion Pylon to whitelist them. The Pylon's owner isn't expelled by default.[3]
- That unlocks a quest in "Pylons" ("Get off my lawn!"), which asks for an Expulsion Pylon. It keeps non-whitelisted players out of a 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunk area, which you choose in the top left of its GUI. You can't place it too close to spawn.[3]
Farming: the Harvester Pylon
a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Harvester Pylon and unlocks after another quest in the Pylons chapter. The Harvester Pylon is a simple auto-farm. Place it on or in the water source and it harvests and replants fully grown crops in a 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 area around it. It needs a hoe and an inventory, such as a chest, above it to hold the crops, and it has to be switched on.[3]
Unverified The quest that the Harvester Pylon quest depends on isn't described in the available sources, so it's unclear what it asks for.
Which Pylons config options matter?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
The Pylons options all live in the server config file, config/pylons-server.toml. Here is how the pack sets the ones you are most likely to touch. The only value the file marks as changed from the mod default is the Harvester Pylon's work delay, so I start with that one.[7]
The one value the pack changed
harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay is set to 20 ticks in this pack. The mod default is 60, so the Harvester Pylon waits much less between harvest attempts than in a stock install. The allowed range is 10 to 120.[7]
Harvester Pylon
- harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool is true, so the harvester needs a hoe and uses 1 durability per harvest action.[7]
- harvester_pylon.harvesterCanBeAutomated is false. You cannot pipe tools in to automate it, and the config notes that unbreakable tools are required for full automation by default.[7]
- harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower is false. If you turned it on, the tool requirement would be disabled and each harvested block would cost RF instead.[7]
- The power settings are at the mod defaults: harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerCost is 5 RF per block and harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerBuffer is 1,000. They only matter if power usage is enabled.[7]
Infusion Pylon
- infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration is 3,600 seconds (1 hour), the mod default. That is the total duration a Potion Filter needs before it can be used, equal to 7.5 vanilla extended potions.[1][7]
- infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration is 60 seconds, the mod default. It prevents unintended interactions with other mods that add persistent potion effects at low durations.[7]
- infusion_pylon.infusionMaximumPotency is 3, the mod default. It is 0-indexed, so a Resistance V potion would be potency 4.[7]
- infusion_pylon.infusionAppliedDuration is 20 seconds, the mod default. The duration is refreshed up to this amount every 60 ticks.[7]
- infusion_pylon.infusionChunkloads is true. The pylon chunkloads itself, limited to one pylon per player while that player is online.[7]
- infusion_pylon.infusionAllowedEffects is empty, so every effect is allowed unless it is denied. infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects blocks minecraft:absorption, tombstone:ghostly_shape, irons_spellbooks:heartstop, relics:immortality, irons_spellbooks:evasion and irons_spellbooks:abyssal_shroud. The denied list overrides the allowed list.[7]
Expulsion Pylon
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionAllowedDimensions limits where it works: minecraft:overworld, allthemodium:the_beyond, eternal_starlight:starlight and compactmachines:compact_world.[7]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonCanExplode is false, so explosions do not destroy it.[7]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonMaxRadius is 2, the mod default and also the top of its range. The center chunk is not counted, so a radius of 2 means a 5x5 chunk area.[7]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionWorldSpawnRadius is 1, the mod default. It only takes effect if it is larger than the world spawn radius from the spawnRadius gamerule.[7]
Teams
general.teamSupportEnabled is true. Team support is active whenever a compatible mod (FTB Teams or Argonauts) is installed.[7]
What changed in Pylons between versions?
Here's how Pylons has moved through the pack's releases. All the Mods 10 7.1 ships Pylons 5.4.2, and the mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.3 or earlier.[2]
- All the Mods 10 3.2: Pylons updated from 5.1.1 to 5.2.1.[8]
- All the Mods 10 5.5: Pylons updated from 5.2.1 to 5.4.1.[9]
- All the Mods 10 6.0: Pylons updated from 5.4.1 to 5.4.2, the version you still get in 7.1.[2][10]
Unverified The pack changelogs only record the version bumps. There are no stored changelogs for the shipped Pylons jars, so what changed in each update (new features, fixes, or balance changes) is unverified here.
