What is Compact Machines?
2 parts
Compact Machines is part of the pack as version 7.0.81 (the NeoForge build), and it has been in the pack since version 2.21 of the modpack or earlier. I don't have a guidebook or mod description for it, so I won't guess at its mechanics here. What the pack's own sources do show is how the quest book mentions it.[1]
Where the quest book mentions it
The only mention I can see is in the Applied Energistics 2 chapter, which sits in the Storage group and is chapter 17 of 66 in the book. The chapter opens with "Applied Energistics 2" quest. Its "Spatial IO" quest quest, which asks for the Spatial IO Port, compares AE2's way of capturing whole structures in a storage cell to the Compact Machines mod, saying the two are not too dissimilar. That is a comparison, not a Compact Machines quest.[2]
What comes before and after
The Spatial IO quest comes after another quest in the same chapter. After it comes the Spatial Containment Structure quest (a quest in "Applied Energistics 2"), which asks for the Spatial Pylon. That one leads on to a quest in "Applied Energistics 2" and "Spatial Storage Cell" quest.[2]
How do you get started with Compact Machines?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Compact Machines lets you place a block and step inside it into your own compacted dimension. In this pack the quest "Compact Machines" quest sits in the Building Tips chapter, after the Paxel quest, and it asks you to make the Personal Shrinking Device.[3]
Step by step
- Make the two modules first: the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. Both are ingredients in the shrinking device and in every machine recipe in the pack.[4]
- Craft the Personal Shrinking Device. It is the key to the whole mod, because you use it on a placed machine to get inside.[4][5]
- Make some Compact Machine Wall blocks. Every machine recipe in the pack needs one.[4]
- Craft a machine (New Machine), place it in the world, and use the shrinking device on it to enter.[4][5]

Compact Machine Walls are needed for every machine recipe.
Picking a machine
The machine recipes in this pack are added by the pack itself, with one recipe per variant: tiny, small, normal, large, giant, colossal, farming and soaryn. The quest says the size of a machine depends on the recipe and ranges from 5x5x5 to 45x45x45. Here is the tiny one as an example.[3][4]

Inside the machine
You can't break a Compact Machine's walls, and you leave by right clicking with the Personal Shrinking Device, so keep it on you.[3]
How does Compact Machines work?
4 parts
Compact Machines lets you craft a machine block, place it in the world and step inside it to reach a pocket room. The mod's own description says to craft a machine, place it, then use a Personal Shrinking Device on it. That is how you get in.[5]
Getting inside and getting out
The Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) is your key. Use it on a placed machine and you enter its compact space. There is also a keybind called Quick-Exit Compact Machine that gets you back out, and another that opens the Room Upgrade Screen.[5]
Leaving a room can wear your device down, because the mod has a game rule for damaging shrinking devices when you exit. Other game rules control players who end up out of bounds. Separate rules let creative players, spectators and survival players be out of bounds, and another rule decides whether out-of-bounds players take damage. The sources don't give the default values, so check the rules in your own world.[5]
Crafting the parts
Everything starts with the Compact Machine Wall, which is the breakable wall block. The mod even has an advancement for obtaining one. A wall drops itself when broken. The mod also has a separate Solid Compact Machine Wall block.[5][6]
The two modules are the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. Both go into every machine, and the PSD needs both as well.[7]

Machine sizes in this pack
In this pack every machine is the same item, New Machine. Each recipe stamps a room template and a color onto the result, and the template decides the size of the room. The pack added all of these machine recipes. Each uses the same shaped layout, with a different centre ingredient for each size. The room templates are defined by the pack as well.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]
- Tiny: a 3 by 3 by 3 room.[15][16]
- Small: a 5 by 5 by 5 room.[13][17]
- Normal: a 7 by 7 by 7 room.[12][18]
- Large: a 9 by 9 by 9 room.[11][19]
- Giant: an 11 by 11 by 11 room.[10][20]
- Colossal: a 13 by 13 by 13 room.[8][21]
- Farming: a 21 by 11 by 21 room (width, height, depth) with a grass block floor.[9][22]
- Soaryn: a huge 45 by 45 by 45 room.[14][23]

Some room templates can also generate structures when a room is created. The mod's tooltip text says so, but the sources don't say which templates in this pack do it.[5]
What the room is like
The mod has its own Compact Machine biome. It has no precipitation and no worldgen features. Its spawn lists include animals such as sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, horses and donkeys, plus hostile mobs such as spiders, zombies, skeletons, creepers, slimes, endermen and witches.[5][24]
How do you progress through Compact Machines?
3 parts
In this pack, Compact Machines progression starts in the quest book. The "Compact Machines" quest quest sits in the Building Tips chapter, right after "Paxel" quest, which itself follows the Tools! quest under "Building Tips!" quest. Its task is to get a Personal Shrinking Device. Most of that chapter's quests are not reproduced here, so check the quest book itself for the rest.[25]
The quest explains the basics: you place a Compact Machine, enter it with the Personal Shrinking Device, and leave by right-clicking the device. The machine's walls can't be broken.[25]
Step 1: the shrinking device
Before you can build any machine you need walls, the shrinking and enlarging modules, and the device itself. These recipes are the mod's own, not changed by the pack.[7]
The Compact Machine Wall, a mod recipe the pack leaves as it is.

The Personal Shrinking Device uses both modules, and it is also a mod recipe.
Step 2: choosing a tier
The pack adds its own machine recipes, one per tier, and each gives you the same New Machine item. They all share the same base parts, and one extra ingredient decides the tier. The recipe ids are tiny, small, normal, large, giant and colossal, plus soaryn and farming. They are shown below in that order.[7]

For the large, giant, colossal and farming recipes, the pack's advancement files unlock the recipe when you have a Compact Machine Wall in your inventory. So craft walls early and those recipes show up in your recipe book.[26][27][28][29]
Room sizes
The pack defines each tier's room in a room template file. The colossal and farming templates are shown in the sources: the colossal room is 13 by 13 by 13, and the farming room is 21 wide, 21 deep and 11 tall, with a grass block floor.[21][22]
When you pick a machine back up, it keeps its custom name, its colour and its room template.[30]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Compact Machines?
1 part
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Compact Machines only shows up in one place in the quest book: the Building Tips chapter. There's a single quest for the mod, so there's no long chain to follow.[3]
Compact Machines (Building Tips)
The quest "Compact Machines" quest unlocks after you finish the Paxel quest in the same chapter. Do Paxel first, then come back here.[3]
The task is to obtain the Personal Shrinking Device. It's a submission-style item task, so you don't have to build or enter anything to finish it.[3]
The quest text also works as a quick primer on how the mod plays. Once you place a Compact Machine, you enter it with the Personal Shrinking Device. The size of the interior depends on the recipe you used, from 5x5x5 up to 45x45x45.[3]
Which Compact Machines config options matter?
The only Compact Machines option I can confirm for this pack is in the client config file, so this section is short.[31]
In this pack, enableRoomPreviews is set to false. The file describes it as enabling the room preview when you open a bound machine UI, so in this pack you won't get that preview.[31]
It is a client-side option, so it only affects your own game. If you want the preview, change the value to true in config/compactmachines-client.toml.[31]
Unverified The sources don't show the mod's default for this option, so I can't say whether the pack changed it. No other Compact Machines config values are confirmed here.
What changed in Compact Machines between versions?
1 part
All the Mods 10 8.2 includes Compact Machines 7.0.81 (compactmachines-neoforge-7.0.81.jar). The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.21 or earlier, and the pack changelogs show it being updated several times since then.[1]
Version bumps in the pack changelogs
- All the Mods 10 2.28: updated from 7.0.14 to 7.0.22.[32]
- All the Mods 10 4.11: updated from 7.0.22 to 7.0.36.[33]
- All the Mods 10 4.13: updated from 7.0.36 to 7.0.68.[34]
- All the Mods 10 5.5: updated from 7.0.68 to 7.0.80.[35]
- All the Mods 10 6.0: updated from 7.0.80 to 7.0.81, the version that 8.2 still ships.[1][36]
Unverified What actually changed inside Compact Machines in each of these updates (new features, fixes or balance changes) is unverified. The pack changelogs only list the version numbers, and no mod changelogs for the shipped jars are available.
