What is Pylons?

2 parts

Pylons is a small magic block mod that adds a handful of utility blocks, and this pack includes version 5.4.2. The pack's quest book credits it to Mutant Gumdrop and says not to let the size of the mod fool you. Each pylon does one job, and most of them get their settings from a filter item that you right-click on something and then put into the pylon.[1][2][3]

What the pylons do

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack gives Pylons its own chapter, "Pylons", in the "Logistics" group. It is chapter 36 of 70 in the book and has 12 quests.[3]

The chapter opens with "Pylons" quest, which asks you for Polished Blackstone to get started. Every pylon quest comes after it. a quest in "Pylons" follows the untitled hoe quest, a quest in "Pylons" follows a quest in "Pylons", and a quest in "Pylons" follows a quest in "Pylons". a quest in "Pylons" follows a quest in "Pylons" and a quest in "Pylons". a quest in "Pylons" follows a quest in "Pylons" and a quest in "Pylons".[3]

Tip: The Draconic Evolution chapter in the Tech group also talks about "Pylons", but those are that mod's energy pylons for the Energy Core, not the blocks from this mod.[4]

How do you get started with Pylons?

5 parts

Pylons lives in the Logistics group of the quest book, as chapter 36 of 70, and it has 12 quests. It starts with "Pylons" quest, which asks you for Polished Blackstone, the base material for the pylons. After that you can pick the pylon that solves your problem, and each one has its own quest.[3]

Harvester Pylon: a simple auto-farm

The Harvester Pylon is a good first build because it saves you work right away. The quest a quest in "Pylons" comes after the intro quest and a short quest about the hoe (a quest in "Pylons"). Put the pylon on or in a water source, and it harvests and replants fully grown crops around it. The area can be 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 blocks.[3]

Watch out: The quest warns that using a lot of modifiers with the Harvester Pylon, like Lilypads or fertilizer, makes it farm very fast and it can become a TPS eater.[3]

Protection Pylon with Block and Mob Filters

The Protection Pylon stops you from accidentally breaking blocks or killing mobs inside a chunk range of 1x1 to 5x5 chunks. It does nothing until you give it filters. The quest a quest in "Pylons" comes after the Mob Filter (a quest in "Pylons") and Block Filter (a quest in "Pylons") quests, so make those first.[3][6]

Click a block with the Block Filter to set it, or click a mob with the Mob Filter. Each filter holds only one block or mob, so protecting five things takes five filters. Clicking something different swaps what the filter holds.[3]

Interdiction Pylon: stop mob spawns

The Interdiction Pylon blocks spawns of the mobs you put in Mob Filters. Its quest, a quest in "Pylons", comes after the Mob Filter and Lifeless Filter quests. The Lifeless Filter blocks all mob spawns instead and ignores the pylon's working area settings. The pack changed the Interdiction Pylon recipe, so check the one below rather than the mod's default.[3][7]

Infusion Pylon: a cheaper Beacon

The Infusion Pylon gives you a potion effect continuously while you are in its set chunk area. First fill a Potion Filter: get the effect on yourself, then right click with the filter to move it in. Repeat until the filter is full and active. The quest is a quest in "Pylons", after the Potion Filter quest (a quest in "Pylons").[3]

In this pack a Potion Filter needs 3600 seconds (1 hour) of effect before it can be used. See infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration.[5]

Each extraction must be at least 60 seconds long. See infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration.[5]

The pack also bans a few effects, including Absorption, so check infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects if one won't go in. The Infusion Pylon recipe was changed by the pack.[5][7]

Expulsion Pylon: keep players out

The Expulsion Pylon pushes non-whitelisted players out of a set number of chunks around it: 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5, chosen in its GUI. Right click a player with a Player Filter and put it in the pylon to whitelist them. The owner is not expelled by default. The pylon can't be placed too close to spawn. Its quests are a quest in "Pylons" and a quest in "Pylons". The pack changed the Expulsion Pylon recipe.[3][7]

In this pack the maximum radius is 2, which is the 5x5 size. See expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonMaxRadius.[5]

How does Pylons work?

8 parts

Pylons is a small mod built around five single-block machines: the Expulsion Pylon, Harvester Pylon, Infusion Pylon, Interdiction Pylon and Protection Pylon. Each one does a single job, and most are set up by giving them filters. Every one of them can be toggled automatically with redstone.[6]

A pylon needs a known owner to work. If the owner can't be found, the pylon shows "Owner not found. Pylon disabled."[6]

Filters

  • Player Filter: right-click a player to select them. The Expulsion Pylon uses these as its whitelist.[6]
  • Mob Filter: right-click a mob to select it. The Interdiction Pylon uses it to pick which mobs to block, and the Protection Pylon uses it to pick which mobs to protect.[6]
  • Block Filter: right-click a block to select it. The Protection Pylon uses it to pick which blocks to protect.[6]
  • Potion Filter: loaded with a potion effect, then used in the Infusion Pylon.[6]
  • Lifeless Filter: a special filter for the Interdiction Pylon, explained below.[6]

The pack also has "clear" recipes for the mob, player and potion filters:[7]

Expulsion Pylon

This one expels other players from a chunk range you choose, from 1x1 up to 5x5 chunks. You can whitelist players with a Player Filter, and OPs are whitelisted automatically. If team support is enabled, team members are whitelisted too. It's on in this pack through general.teamSupportEnabled, and it only does something if a compatible team mod such as FTB Teams or Argonauts is installed.[5][6]

In this pack expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonMaxRadius is 2, the same as the mod default. The center chunk isn't counted, so a radius of 2 gives that 5x5 maximum.[5]

The pack changed the Expulsion Pylon recipe from the mod's own, so don't rely on other guides for it.[7]

This recipe was changed by the pack.

Harvester Pylon

The Harvester Pylon harvests crops in a range from 3x3 to 9x9 blocks around it and outputs to an inventory above it. Place the pylon inside the water block of the farm, or level with the crops. If there is no inventory above, it tells you to place one, and it also warns you when that inventory is full.[6]

By default it needs a hoe inside the pylon and uses 1 durability per harvest, unless the hoe is unbreakable. Unbreaking and other durability enchants are supported. This pack keeps that default: harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool is true.[5][6]

The pack changed the speed. harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay is 20 ticks between harvest attempts, where the mod default is 60.[5]

Power and automation

The harvester can use power instead of tool durability. That is off here, since harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower is false. If you turn it on, the tool requirement is disabled and each harvested block costs RF. harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerCost is 5 RF per block and harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerBuffer is 1,000, both the mod defaults. The config notes that the buffer should be greater than the cost per block times 80.[5]

For automation, harvester_pylon.harvesterCanBeAutomated is false in this pack, so you can't pipe tools into the harvester. The config says that, by default, unbreakable tools are required for full automation.[5]

Apricorns

The pack adds its own harvesting recipes for Cobblemon apricorns, in black, blue, green, pink, red, white and yellow. Each one gives 1 apricorn of the same colour, and the recipes only load when Cobblemon is installed.[8][9][10][11][12][13][14]

Infusion Pylon

The Infusion Pylon applies effects to you from any distance, using activated Potion Filters. By default it loads its own chunk while the owner is online. In this pack infusion_pylon.infusionChunkloads is true, and that is limited to one pylon per player.[5][6]

  1. Get a potion effect on yourself, from a potion for example.[6]
  2. Right-click with the Potion Filter in hand to extract the effect onto the filter.[6]
  3. Keep going until the filter has enough duration. It needs 3,600 seconds (1 hour), which equals 7.5 vanilla extended potions. The minimum effect duration that can be used for a filter is 60 seconds.[5]
  4. Put the activated filter in the pylon.[6]

Both numbers are the mod defaults here: infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration is 60 and infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration is 3,600. Duplicate potion filters can be combined by placing one in each hand and right-clicking.[5][6]

The pack leaves infusion_pylon.infusionAppliedDuration at 20 seconds. That is the max duration applied to you, and it is refreshed up to that amount every 60 ticks. infusion_pylon.infusionMaximumPotency is 3. It is 0-indexed, so Resistance V would be potency 4 and is above the cap.[5]

Some effects are blocked. infusion_pylon.infusionAllowedEffects is empty, so everything is allowed except what infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects names. This pack denies minecraft:absorption, tombstone:ghostly_shape, irons_spellbooks:heartstop, relics:immortality, irons_spellbooks:evasion and irons_spellbooks:abyssal_shroud. The denied list overrides the allowed list, and effects can also be banned with the pylons:infusion_banned tag. A blocked effect's tooltip says whether it is disabled by tag or by the config.[5][6]

The pack changed the Infusion Pylon recipe too.[7]

Interdiction Pylon

This pylon prevents natural and forced spawns of the mobs you specify, within a chunk range from 1x1 to 5x5. Add Mob Filter items to say which mobs to block, and right-click a mob to select it for the filter.[6]

The Lifeless Filter works differently. It blocks all mobs, but only natural spawns, and it raises the range to 25x25 chunks. It also disables any other mob filters in the pylon.[6]

The pack changed this recipe as well.[7]

Protection Pylon

The Protection Pylon stops you, the owner, from breaking blocks or killing mobs inside a chunk range of 1x1 to 5x5. It's a safety net against accidents. Add Mob Filter and Block Filter items to say which mobs and blocks to protect.[6]

How do you progress through Pylons?

8 parts

The Pylons chapter sits in the Logistics group of the quest book (chapter 36 of 70) and has 12 quests. The book doesn't number them as tiers. You start with one entry quest, then branch into five pylons, and each pylon quest follows the filter (or Hoe) that pylon works with.[3]

Where it starts

The first quest, "Pylons" quest, asks you for Polished Blackstone. That's the material you need to start making pylons, and all five pylon recipes in the pack use it.[3][7]

Quest order at a glance

The filter quests themselves show no prerequisite in the book, so you can grab them in whatever order suits you.[3]

Farming: the Harvester Pylon

The Harvester Pylon is a simple auto-farm. Put it on or in a water source and it harvests and replants fully grown crops in a set area. You can set that area to 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 blocks. It needs a Hoe, and an inventory such as a chest above it to receive the crops. A Hoe that can't break works forever, while a breakable one needs replacing.[3]

Watch out: The quest warns that stacking lots of modifiers on the Harvester Pylon, like Lilypads or fertilizer, makes it farm very fast and it can become a TPS eater.[3]

The pack also adds its own Pylons harvesting recipes for the Cobblemon apricorns: black, blue, green, pink, red, white and yellow. They only load when Cobblemon is present, and each one gives 1 of the same apricorn.[8][9][10][11][12][13][14]

Potion effects: Potion Filter and Infusion Pylon

To fill a Potion Filter, have a potion effect on you and right click with the filter. The effect moves from you into the filter. Repeat until it's filled and active. The quest says this also works with modded effects and ones you can't normally get from potions, like Haste or Resistance.[3]

Preventing accidents: Mob Filter, Block Filter and Protection Pylon

Click a mob with the Mob Filter to set it, or click a block with the Block Filter. Each filter holds only 1 entry, so protecting five different mobs takes 5 Mob Filters. Clicking something different swaps what the filter holds.[3]

The Protection Pylon then stops you from accidentally killing those mobs or breaking those blocks within its selected chunk radius. You can stack several Mob and Block Filters in it. This one uses the mod's own recipe.[3][7]

Stopping spawns: Lifeless Filter and Interdiction Pylon

The Interdiction Pylon blocks mob spawns. Feed it Mob Filters to stop only certain mobs, stacking more for more spawns, and adjust its working area to set how far it reaches. Swap in the Lifeless Filter and it blocks every mob spawn instead, ignoring those area settings.[3]

The Lifeless Filter covers a 25x25 block area at every Y level, above and below the pylon, so cave lighting stops mattering. It has no whitelisting. The pack changed the Interdiction Pylon's recipe from the mod's own.[3][7]

Keeping players out: Player Filter and Expulsion Pylon

The Expulsion Pylon pushes out any player who isn't whitelisted from a set number of chunks around it. You choose 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunks in its GUI, top left. It can't be placed too close to spawn.[3]

To whitelist someone, right click them with a Player Filter, then put the filter in the pylon. By default the pylon's owner isn't expelled. The pack changed the Expulsion Pylon's recipe from the mod's own.[3][7]

Resetting filters

The pack has shapeless clearing recipes for the Mob, Player and Potion Filters, where one filter goes in and one comes out. Block Filters and Lifeless Filters have no such recipe in the pack.[7]

Mob FilterMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: pylons:clear_mob_filter

The Player and Potion Filters have matching clear recipes.

Watch out: The pack changed the recipes for the Expulsion, Infusion and Interdiction Pylons. The Harvester and Protection Pylons and all the filters use the mod's own recipes. Check the recipe blocks above rather than assuming mod defaults.[7]
Tip: Don't confuse these with other pylons in the quest book. The Draconic Evolution chapter has an Energy Pylon for moving OP in and out of the Energy Core, and the Applied Energistics 2 chapter has a Spatial Pylon for Spatial IO. They belong to different mods.[4][15]

Which All the Mons quests use Pylons?

3 parts

The pack's quest book gives this mod its own chapter, "Pylons" quest. It sits in the Logistics group as chapter 36 of 70 and holds 12 quests. The chapter covers the Pylons themselves and the filters that control what they do.[3]

Where it starts

The opening quest, "Pylons" quest, introduces the mod and asks you for Polished Blackstone, which you need to make Pylons. The book lists no prerequisite for the five filter quests or for the untitled Hoe quest, so you can pick those up whenever you like. Every Pylon quest comes after the opening quest.[3]

The filter quests

  • a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Mob Filter. You click a mob with it to set it, and each filter holds only 1 mob. Clicking a different mob swaps the one inside.[3]
  • a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Block Filter. It works the same way but with a block, and again each filter holds only 1.[3]
  • a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Potion Filter. You fill it by having a potion effect on you and right clicking with the filter. That moves the effect from you into the filter, and you repeat until it is filled and active.[3]
  • a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Player Filter. Right click a player with it to set them, then put it in an Expulsion Pylon to whitelist them. By default the owner of the Pylon is not expelled.[3]
  • a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Lifeless Filter. It stops every mob spawn, hostile or passive, in a 25x25 block area, at every Y level. There is no whitelisting with this filter.[3]

The Pylon quests

Each of these quests asks you to have the Pylon itself. They unlock after the opening quest plus the quests listed below.[3]

  • a quest in "Pylons" for the Harvester Pylon comes after the opening quest and the untitled quest a quest in "Pylons". That untitled quest explains that the Harvester Pylon needs a Hoe to work. The Pylon harvests and replants fully grown crops, and the area can be set to 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 blocks.[3]
  • a quest in "Pylons" for the Infusion Pylon comes after the Potion Filter quest. It works like a Beacon: a potion effect loaded through a Potion Filter is given to you continuously while you are in the set chunk area.[3]
  • a quest in "Pylons" for the Protection Pylon comes after the Mob Filter and Block Filter quests. It stops you accidentally destroying chosen blocks or mobs in the selected chunk radius, and you can stack several Mob and Block Filters.[3]
  • a quest in "Pylons" for the Expulsion Pylon comes after the Player Filter quest. It keeps non-whitelisted players out of 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunks around it, and it cannot be placed too close to spawn.[3]
  • a quest in "Pylons" for the Interdiction Pylon comes after the Mob Filter and Lifeless Filter quests. It blocks mob spawns, either only the mobs in your Mob Filters or everything with a Lifeless Filter. The working area can be changed, but a Lifeless Filter ignores those settings.[3]
Watch out: Other chapters in the book have quests with "Pylon" in the name that belong to different mods. The Draconic Evolution quest "Power comes and goes through these" quest is about Energy Core pylons, and the Applied Energistics 2 quest a quest in "Applied Energistics 2" is about the Spatial Pylon. Neither is part of this mod.[4][15]

Which Pylons config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The Pylons options all live in the server config file, config/pylons-server.toml. Here is how the pack sets the ones you are most likely to touch. The only value the file marks as changed from the mod default is the Harvester Pylon's work delay, so I start with that one.[16]

The one value the pack changed

harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay is set to 20 ticks in this pack. The mod default is 60, so the Harvester Pylon waits much less between harvest attempts than in a stock install. The allowed range is 10 to 120.[16]

Harvester Pylon

Infusion Pylon

Expulsion Pylon

Teams

general.teamSupportEnabled is true. Team support is active whenever a compatible mod (FTB Teams or Argonauts) is installed.[16]

What changed in Pylons between versions?

3 parts

All the Mons 1.3.0 ships Pylons 5.4.2, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.3.0-beta or earlier. Here are the recent Pylons releases from the mod's own changelogs, and since you have 5.4.2, you have all of these changes.[2]

Pylons 5.4.0

  • Added harvesting recipes for Cobblemon Apricorns.[17]
  • Added dye support. Right click a pylon with any dye item to color it, and both vanilla and Dyenamics colors work.[17]
  • Reworked redstone support to fix #42.[17]

Pylons 5.4.1

  • Added harvesting compatibility for Cobblemon berries, mint and grain.[18]

Pylons 5.4.2

  • Refactored the Cobblemon compatibility to fix a bug where a berry bush instantly reset to fully grown after harvesting because of its growth timer.[19]

If you farm Cobblemon berries with a pylon, 5.4.2 is the release that fixes the instant reset after a harvest, and that is the version you have in 1.3.0.[2][19]

Unverified No pack changelog entries about Pylons were available to the sources here, so any pack-specific changes to this mod across All the Mons releases are unverified.
