What is Pylons?
2 parts
Pylons is a small utility mod that adds a handful of "magic block" machines for protecting your base, farming and buffing yourself. This pack includes version 5.4.2, and its quest book has a dedicated Pylons chapter.[1][2][3]
Each pylon does one job, and most are configured by slotting in filters that you set by right-clicking a target, such as a mob, block, player or potion effect.[1][3]
The pylons
- Expulsion Pylon: keeps players who aren't whitelisted out of 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunks around it. It was made with servers in mind. Whitelist friends with a Player Filter. By default the owner isn't expelled, and you can't place it too close to spawn.[1][3]
- Infusion Pylon: gives you potion effects stored in activated Potion Filter items. The quest describes it as a cheaper take on a Beacon.[1][3]
- Harvester Pylon: a simple auto-farm. Place it in the farm's water, set the area to 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9, and put an inventory above it for the crops. It needs a hoe, and the mod's default is 1 durability per harvested crop, which a config option can disable.[1][3]
- Interdiction Pylon: stops mob spawns. Use Mob Filter items to block specific mobs, or a Lifeless Filter to stop every spawn in a 25x25 block area, at every Y level.[1][3]
- Protection Pylon: prevents you from accidentally killing chosen mobs or breaking chosen blocks in its chunk radius, using Mob Filters and Block Filter items.[3]
Where it fits in the pack
The Pylons quest chapter teaches the filters first, then unlocks the pylons that use them. For example, a quest in "Pylons" (Infusion Pylon) follows the Potion Filter quest a quest in "Pylons". The Protection Pylon quest a quest in "Pylons" follows both the Mob Filter and Block Filter quests, and the Interdiction Pylon quest a quest in "Pylons" follows the Mob Filter and Lifeless Filter quests.[3]
How do you get started with Pylons?
4 parts
In this pack, the Pylons quest chapter has a quest for each pylon and for the filters. The pylons are the machines, and the filters are the cards you slot into them to decide what they affect. Here's the order I'd tackle them in.[1][3][4]
Harvester Pylon: your first auto-farm
Start with the Harvester Pylon. It's the simplest pylon and gives you a quick payoff. It harvests and replants fully grown crops around it, and the area can be set from 3x3 up to 9x9 blocks. The pack uses the mod's own recipe for it.[3][4][5]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: pylons:harvester_pylon
Put it on or inside the water source of your farm, and put an inventory such as a chest above it for the crops. It also needs a hoe inside it. By default each harvest uses 1 durability, and that is configurable. The quest also warns that stacking lots of modifiers, like lilypads or fertilizer, makes it farm very fast and can hurt TPS.[3][4]
Block Filter, Mob Filter and Protection Pylon
Next, protect yourself from your own mistakes. The Protection Pylon stops you, the owner, from breaking chosen blocks or killing chosen mobs within a chunk range of 1x1 to 5x5. You choose what is protected with filters: click a block with a Block Filter or a mob with a Mob Filter. Each filter holds only one block or mob, so you stack filters for more. The quest for this pylon comes after the Mob Filter and Block Filter quests.[3][4]

Potion Filter and Infusion Pylon: a cheaper Beacon
The Infusion Pylon gives you a potion effect while you're in its chunk area, and the quest compares it to a Beacon. To fill a Potion Filter, get the effect on yourself and right-click with the filter. This also works for effects you can't normally get from potions, like Haste or Resistance. By default the minimum duration you can extract is 60 seconds, and the filter needs 1 hour of duration to activate. Both values are configurable.[3][4]

Server and spawn control
The Expulsion Pylon keeps players who aren't whitelisted out of a 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunk area. Right-click a player with a Player Filter and put the filter in the pylon to whitelist them. By default the owner isn't expelled. This pylon can't be placed too close to spawn.[3][4]
The Interdiction Pylon blocks mob spawns. Use Mob Filters to block specific mobs, or the Lifeless Filter to block all natural spawns. With the Lifeless Filter, the pylon ignores its normal range settings.[3][4]

Each pylon has its own quest in the Pylons chapter. The Harvester Pylon is a quest in "Pylons", the Protection Pylon is a quest in "Pylons", the Infusion Pylon is a quest in "Pylons", the Expulsion Pylon is a quest in "Pylons" and the Interdiction Pylon is a quest in "Pylons".[3]
How does Pylons work?
7 parts
Pylons is a small magic-block mod, and its systems are simple. You place a pylon, give it filters, and it works over a chunk range or block range. Every pylon described here can be toggled automatically with redstone. Power only comes up for one block, the Harvester Pylon.[1][4]
Filters
Filters tell a pylon what to target. You bind each one by right-clicking: a Mob Filter on a mob, a Block Filter on a block, and a Player Filter on a player. The Potion Filter works differently: you right-click with it while you have an active potion effect.[4]
The pack also has shapeless crafting recipes that take a Mob Filter, Player Filter or Potion Filter and return the same item. These are the "clear" recipes. The sources don't say exactly what they reset, so check a filter in-game after using one.[5]
Expulsion Pylon
The Expulsion Pylon expels other players from a chunk range you select, from 1x1 up to 5x5 chunks. Put a Player Filter in it to whitelist players. OPs are whitelisted automatically. Team members are too, if team support is enabled.[4]
In this pack general.teamSupportEnabled is true, but it only has an effect if a compatible mod (FTB Teams or Argonauts) is installed. expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonMaxRadius is 2, the mod's maximum. The center chunk isn't counted, so a radius of 2 gives the 5x5 chunk area.[6]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionAllowedDimensions limits it to the Overworld, The Beyond, Eternal Starlight and the Compact Machines world in this pack.[6]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonCanExplode is false, so explosions can't destroy the pylon.[6]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionWorldSpawnRadius is 1. It sets an area around world spawn where the pylon can't operate, but it only counts if it is larger than the world spawn radius gamerule.[6]
The pack changed this pylon's recipe, so don't rely on the mod's default.[5]

Harvester Pylon
The Harvester Pylon harvests crops in a 3x3 to 9x9 block range around it and outputs to an inventory above. Place it inside the water block of your farm, or level with the crops.[1][4]
By default it needs a hoe inside the pylon and uses 1 durability per harvest, unless the hoe is unbreakable. Unbreaking and other durability enchants are supported. This pack keeps that default: harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool is true and harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower is false.[4][6]
The pack changed one value. harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay is 20 ticks between harvest attempts, where the mod default is 60.[6]
Power and automation
The harvester can use RF instead of durability, and this is the only power use the sources describe. If you enable harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower, the tool requirement is disabled and each block harvested costs RF. It is off in this pack, so these numbers only apply if you change the config. The cost is set by harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerCost (5 in this pack) and the buffer by harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerBuffer (1,000 in this pack). The config notes say to keep the buffer greater than the cost per block times 80.[4][6]
For tool-based farms, harvester_pylon.harvesterCanBeAutomated is false in this pack. The config comment says this controls whether tools can be piped in, and that unbreakable tools are required for full automation by default. Unbreakable hoes, such as Mystical Agriculture's Supremium Hoe, can be used.[1][6]
Infusion Pylon
The Infusion Pylon applies effects to you from any distance, using activated Potion Filters. To activate a filter, get the effect on yourself (from a potion, for example) and right-click with the filter in hand. That extracts the effect's duration into the filter.[1][4]
- infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration is 60 seconds, so the effect on you must have at least that much left to be extracted.[4][6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration is 3,600 seconds (1 hour), which is equivalent to 7.5 vanilla extended potions. A filter needs that much stored before it is active.[1][4][6]
- To combine duplicate filters, hold one in each hand and right-click. The off-hand filter's duration is added to the main-hand one.[1][4]
- infusion_pylon.infusionAppliedDuration is 20 seconds. That is the maximum duration applied to you, refreshed up to that amount every 60 ticks.[6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionMaximumPotency is 3. It is 0-indexed, so a Resistance V potion would be potency 4.[6]
By default the pylon chunkloads itself while its owner is online, limited to one pylon per player (infusion_pylon.infusionChunkloads is true in this pack). That is how it keeps working when you are far away.[4][6]
Some effects are blocked. infusion_pylon.infusionAllowedEffects is empty, which allows everything not denied. infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects blocks minecraft:absorption, tombstone:ghostly_shape, irons_spellbooks:heartstop, irons_spellbooks:evasion, irons_spellbooks:abyssal_shroud and relics:immortality. The denied list overrides the allowed list.[6]
The pack changed the recipe for this pylon too.[5]

Interdiction Pylon
The Interdiction Pylon prevents natural and forced spawns of the mobs you specify within a 1x1 to 5x5 chunk range. Add Mob Filters to choose which mobs to block.[4]
The Lifeless Filter works differently. It blocks all mobs, but only natural spawns, and raises the range to 25x25 chunks. It also disables other mob filters in the pylon.[4]
The pack changed this recipe as well.[5]

Protection Pylon
The Protection Pylon stops its owner from breaking blocks or killing mobs within a 1x1 to 5x5 chunk range, which helps if you want to avoid accidents. Add Mob Filters and Block Filters to choose which mobs and blocks are protected.[4]
How do you progress through Pylons?
3 parts
The pack's Pylons quest chapter lays out the path for you: you make filters first, then the pylons that use them. The quest prerequisites below show which filter leads to which pylon.[3]
Step 1: Filters
Filters are the building blocks of the chapter. Each one has its own quest, and you set each one by interacting with the thing it should remember.[3]
- Mob Filter (a quest in "Pylons"): click a mob with it to set it. Each filter holds only 1 mob, so you need one filter per mob type. Clicking a different mob swaps the stored one.[3]
- Block Filter (a quest in "Pylons"): works the same way, but you click a block. It also holds 1 block, and clicking a different block swaps it.[3]
- Potion Filter (a quest in "Pylons"): while you have a potion effect on you, right click with the filter to move the effect into it. Repeat until it's filled and active. The quest says this also works with modded effects and ones like Haste or Resistance.[3]
- Player Filter (a quest in "Pylons"): right click a player with it to store them, then put it in a pylon to whitelist that player.[3]
- Lifeless Filter (a quest in "Pylons"): blocks every mob spawn, hostile or passive, in a 25x25 block area. That covers every Y level, above and below the pylon. It has no whitelisting.[3]
Here are the in-pack recipes for the filters.[5]

Step 2: Pylons
Most pylon quests unlock after the filter quests they depend on. The Harvester Pylon is the exception, because it needs no filter. Its quest comes after an earlier quest in the chapter.[3]
- Harvester Pylon (a quest in "Pylons"): a simple auto-farm. Place it on or in a water source and it harvests and replants fully grown crops. The area can be 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 blocks. It needs a hoe and an inventory such as a chest above it to receive the crops.[3]
- Infusion Pylon (a quest in "Pylons"): unlocks after the Potion Filter quest. Put an effect in with a Potion Filter and it keeps giving you that effect while you're inside the set chunk area. The quest compares it to a Beacon, only better and cheaper.[3]
- Protection Pylon (a quest in "Pylons"): unlocks after the Mob Filter and Block Filter quests. It stops you from accidentally destroying certain blocks or mobs in the selected chunk radius. You can stack several Mob and Block Filters.[3]
- Expulsion Pylon (a quest in "Pylons"): unlocks after the Player Filter quest. It keeps non-whitelisted players out of a set number of chunks around it, chosen in its GUI as 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5. It can't be placed too close to spawn, and by default the owner isn't expelled.[3]
- Interdiction Pylon (a quest in "Pylons"): unlocks after the Mob Filter and Lifeless Filter quests. It blocks mob spawns, either only for the mobs in your Mob Filters or for everything with a Lifeless Filter. You can change its working area, but a Lifeless Filter ignores those settings.[3]
Pylon recipes in this pack
The pack changed the recipes for the Expulsion, Infusion and Interdiction Pylons. Don't rely on mod defaults for those three. The Harvester and Protection Pylons use the mod's own recipes.[5]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Pylons?
2 parts
The Pylons quests live in a single chapter called Pylons. Each quest asks for one item, and the quest text explains how that item works. The chapter reads best as filters first, then the pylons that use them.[3]
Filter quests (no prerequisites listed)
The filter quests show no prerequisite in the quest data, so you can pick them up in any order.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Mob Filter. You click a mob with it to set it, and each filter holds only 1 mob. The quest's example is that stopping Zombies, Skeletons, Spiders, Creepers and Endermen takes 5 filters.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Block Filter. It works the same way, but you click a block you want to protect from accidental breaking. Each filter holds 1 block.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Potion Filter. You get the potion effect on yourself, then right click with the filter to move the effect into it. The quest says this also works with modded effects and ones like Haste or Resistance.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Player Filter. You right click a player with it, then put it in an Expulsion Pylon to whitelist them. By default the pylon's owner isn't expelled.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Lifeless Filter. It stops every mob spawn, hostile or passive, in a 25x25 block area at every Y level. It has no whitelisting.[3]
Pylon quests
The pylon quests come after the filters they use. Here is what each one asks for and which quests it follows.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Protection Pylon. It comes after the Mob Filter and Block Filter quests. The pylon stops you from accidentally destroying the mobs and blocks you've set in filters, within the selected chunk radius.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Interdiction Pylon. It comes after the Mob Filter and Lifeless Filter quests. It blocks mob spawns, either only the mobs in your Mob Filters or everything with a Lifeless Filter. The Lifeless Filter ignores the working area settings.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Expulsion Pylon. It comes after the Player Filter quest. Players who aren't whitelisted are kept out of a set number of chunks, chosen in the GUI as 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5. The quest also says it can't be set too close to spawn.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Infusion Pylon. It comes after the Potion Filter quest. The quest compares it to a Beacon, and says it keeps giving you the filtered effect while you're in the set chunk area.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Harvester Pylon. It works as a simple auto-farm that harvests and replants fully grown crops in a 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 area. It needs a hoe and an inventory such as a chest above it. It comes after another quest in the Pylons chapter, which the sources here don't describe.[3]
Which Pylons config options matter?
5 parts
The Pylons options all live in the server config file, config/pylons-server.toml. Here is how the pack sets the ones you are most likely to touch. The only value the file marks as changed from the mod default is the Harvester Pylon's work delay, so I start with that one.[6]
The one value the pack changed
harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay is set to 20 ticks in this pack. The mod default is 60, so the Harvester Pylon waits much less between harvest attempts than in a stock install. The allowed range is 10 to 120.[6]
Harvester Pylon
- harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool is true, so the harvester needs a hoe and uses 1 durability per harvest action.[6]
- harvester_pylon.harvesterCanBeAutomated is false. You cannot pipe tools in to automate it, and the config notes that unbreakable tools are required for full automation by default.[6]
- harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower is false. If you turned it on, the tool requirement would be disabled and each harvested block would cost RF instead.[6]
- The power settings are at the mod defaults: harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerCost is 5 RF per block and harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerBuffer is 1,000. They only matter if power usage is enabled.[6]
Infusion Pylon
- infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration is 3,600 seconds (1 hour), the mod default. That is the total duration a Potion Filter needs before it can be used, equal to 7.5 vanilla extended potions.[1][6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration is 60 seconds, the mod default. It prevents unintended interactions with other mods that add persistent potion effects at low durations.[6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionMaximumPotency is 3, the mod default. It is 0-indexed, so a Resistance V potion would be potency 4.[6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionAppliedDuration is 20 seconds, the mod default. The duration is refreshed up to this amount every 60 ticks.[6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionChunkloads is true. The pylon chunkloads itself, limited to one pylon per player while that player is online.[6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionAllowedEffects is empty, so every effect is allowed unless it is denied. infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects blocks minecraft:absorption, tombstone:ghostly_shape, irons_spellbooks:heartstop, relics:immortality, irons_spellbooks:evasion and irons_spellbooks:abyssal_shroud. The denied list overrides the allowed list.[6]
Expulsion Pylon
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionAllowedDimensions limits where it works: minecraft:overworld, allthemodium:the_beyond, eternal_starlight:starlight and compactmachines:compact_world.[6]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonCanExplode is false, so explosions do not destroy it.[6]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonMaxRadius is 2, the mod default and also the top of its range. The center chunk is not counted, so a radius of 2 means a 5x5 chunk area.[6]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionWorldSpawnRadius is 1, the mod default. It only takes effect if it is larger than the world spawn radius from the spawnRadius gamerule.[6]
Teams
general.teamSupportEnabled is true. Team support is active whenever a compatible mod (FTB Teams or Argonauts) is installed.[6]
What changed in Pylons between versions?
1 part
Pylons has been in the pack for a long time, and All the Mods 10 8.1 ships version 5.4.2. The pack changelogs only record version bumps for this mod, so there are no details on what changed inside each update.[2][7][8][9]
Pack updates that changed Pylons
- All the Mods 10 3.2: Pylons went from 5.1.1 to 5.2.1.[9]
- All the Mods 10 5.5: Pylons went from 5.2.1 to 5.4.1.[8]
- All the Mods 10 6.0: Pylons went from 5.4.1 to 5.4.2.[7]
Pylons was already in the pack in All the Mods 10 2.25 or earlier. The current 8.1 release uses the same 5.4.2 jar that arrived in 6.0.[2][7]
Unverified What each Pylons update actually changed (new features, fixes or balance tweaks) is unverified. No changelogs are stored for the shipped jars, so check the mod's own release notes if you need that detail.
