What is Pylons?

3 parts

Pylons is a small utility mod that describes itself as "just another magic block mod". It adds a handful of special blocks, called pylons, that do one job each: keep players out, give you potion effects from anywhere, farm crops for you, or stop mobs from spawning. The pack includes version 5.2.1.[1][2]

The four pylons

Who it's for

If you want to cut down on chores, Pylons is a good fit. The Harvester Pylon automates basic farming, the Infusion Pylon gives you permanent buffs, and the Interdiction Pylon makes a base safer. The Expulsion Pylon is mainly for multiplayer, where it keeps trolls off your lawn.[1][3]

Progression in the pack

The pack has a dedicated Pylons quest chapter that follows the filters. The Expulsion Pylon quest comes after the Player Filter quest, and the Infusion Pylon quest comes after the Potion Filter quest. The Interdiction Pylon quest comes after both the Mob Filter and Lifeless Filter quests. The Harvester Pylon quest also follows an earlier quest in the chapter.[3]

Unverified The sources don't show crafting recipes for the pylons or filters, or where the mod fits into the pack's wider progression, so check the quest book in-game for those.

How do you get started with Pylons?

4 parts

Pylons is a small magic-block mod where each block does one job, and most of them are driven by filters. In this pack the quest chapter walks you through all of it, and this is the order I'd build things in.[1][3]

Harvester Pylon: your first auto-farm

Start with the Harvester Pylon. It's a very simple auto-farm: put it on or in the water source and it harvests and replants fully grown crops in a 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 area. It needs a hoe inside it and an inventory, like a chest, above it to receive the crops. The recipe is the mod's own, unchanged by the pack. The quest is a quest in "Pylons".[3][4][5]

In the mod's default setup the hoe loses 1 durability per harvest, and unbreakable hoes work fine.[1][5]

Potion Filter and Infusion Pylon: effects anywhere

Next, make a Potion Filter (a quest in "Pylons"). Get a potion effect on yourself, then right click with the filter to move the effect into it. Repeat until it's full and active. The quest says this also works with modded effects and ones you can't usually get from potions, such as Haste or Resistance.[3][5]

Put the filter into an Infusion Pylon (a quest in "Pylons"). It works like a Beacon, but with no set radius: it keeps the effect on you wherever you are. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's default.[3][4]

Stopping mob spawns

For spawn control, craft the Mob Filter (a quest in "Pylons"). Click a mob with it to set that mob. Each filter holds only 1 mob, so five different mobs need five filters.[3]

If you'd rather block everything, there's the Lifeless Filter (a quest in "Pylons"). It covers a 25x25 chunk area at every Y level and has no whitelist. It only stops natural spawns, so spawners and spawn eggs still work.[3][5]

Both go into the Interdiction Pylon (a quest in "Pylons"), which comes after the Mob Filter and Lifeless Filter quests in the chapter. With Mob Filters you can set a working area from 1x1 to 5x5 chunks. A Lifeless Filter ignores those settings. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's default.[3][4][5]

Player Filter and Expulsion Pylon: for multiplayer

The Expulsion Pylon (a quest in "Pylons") keeps non-whitelisted players out of a 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunk area, set in its GUI. It can't be placed too close to spawn. To let friends in, right click them with a Player Filter (a quest in "Pylons") and put the filter in the pylon. By default the owner isn't expelled, and OPs are whitelisted automatically. The pack changed the Expulsion Pylon recipe.[3][4][5]

How does Pylons work?

6 parts

The mod currently adds the Expulsion, Infusion, Harvester and Interdiction pylons. Here is how each one works in this pack, with the values the pack changed called out.[1]

Expulsion Pylon

The Expulsion Pylon kicks other players out of a chunk range you choose, from 1x1 up to 5x5 chunks. It's mainly meant for servers. Put a Player Filter in it to whitelist players. OPs are always whitelisted. You can also toggle the pylon with redstone.[1][5]

Team members are whitelisted automatically when team support is on. The pack has general.teamSupportEnabled set to true, but it only has an effect if a compatible mod such as FTB Teams or Argonauts is installed.[5][6]

The pack changed this recipe.

Harvester Pylon

The Harvester Pylon harvests crops in a radius from 3x3 to 9x9 blocks around itself and outputs them to an inventory above it. Place it inside the water block of your farm, or level with the crops. Redstone can toggle it.[1][5]

In this pack it needs a hoe inside the pylon, because harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool is true. Each harvest costs 1 durability unless the hoe is unbreakable, and Unbreaking and other durability enchants are supported.[5][6]

The pack changed harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay to 20 ticks between harvest attempts. The mod default is 60, so this pylon works more often than in the base mod.[6]

Power and automation

harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower is false in this pack, so the harvester runs on hoe durability, not energy. If you turned it on, the tool requirement would be disabled and each harvested block would cost RF. The cost is set by harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerCost, which is 5 here, and the buffer by harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerBuffer, which is 1,000. The config notes say the buffer should be greater than the cost per block times 80.[5][6]

harvester_pylon.harvesterCanBeAutomated is false, so you can't pipe tools into the harvester here. The config notes say unbreakable tools are required for full automation by default. Mystical Agriculture's Supremium Hoe is mentioned as an example of an unbreakable hoe.[1][6]

Infusion Pylon

The Infusion Pylon applies potion effects to you from any distance, using activated Potion Filter items. Redstone can toggle it.[1][5]

  1. Apply a potion effect to yourself, for example by drinking a potion.[5]
  2. Right-click with a Potion Filter in hand to extract the effect. By default the minimum duration that can be extracted is 60 seconds, set by infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration.[5][6]
  3. Keep extracting with the same effect until the filter reaches the required 3,600 seconds (1 hour). That is the same as 7.5 vanilla extended potions.[5][6]
  4. Put the finished filter in the pylon.[5]

Duplicate Potion Filters can be combined by holding one in each hand and right-clicking.[5]

While the pylon is running, it applies the effect for up to 20 seconds at a time. That duration is topped up every 60 ticks, as set by infusion_pylon.infusionAppliedDuration. infusion_pylon.infusionMaximumPotency is 3 and counts from 0, so Resistance V would be potency 4 and is above the limit.[6]

infusion_pylon.infusionChunkloads is true, so the pylon loads its own chunk. This is limited to one pylon per player, and only while that player is online.[5][6]

The pack leaves infusion_pylon.infusionAllowedEffects empty, which allows every effect except the ones in infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects. The denied list overrides the allowed list. Blocked effects are marked in their tooltip as disabled in the config. These are denied in this pack:[5][6]

The Interdiction Pylon stops natural and forced spawns of the mobs you specify within a chunk range of 1x1 to 5x5. Right-click a mob with a Mob Filter to select it, then put the filter in the pylon. Redstone can toggle it.[1][5]

A Lifeless Filter works differently. It blocks all mobs, but only natural spawns, over a much larger range of 25x25 chunks. It also disables any other mob filters in the pylon.[4][5]

How do you progress through Pylons?

4 parts

Pylons in this pack are built around a simple idea: you craft a filter, then plug it into a pylon. The quest chapter walks you through three filter-and-pylon pairs, plus the Harvester Pylon, which works as a standalone auto-farm. Here's how each branch goes.[3]

The quest order at a glance

Step 1: the filters

Every filter has its own quest, and each one is crafted from its own recipe. You set them up by clicking or right-clicking, as described below.[3][4]

The Mob Filter holds one mob. Click the mob you never want to see again with the filter. Clicking a different mob swaps it. If you want five mob types gone, such as Zombies, Skeletons, Spiders, Creepers and Endermen, you need 5 Mob Filters.[3]

The Lifeless Filter is the blunt option. It stops mob spawns within a 25x25 chunk area at every Y level, so caves above or below the pylon are covered too. It has no whitelisting, and it doesn't stop forced spawns from spawners or spawn eggs.[3]

Step 2: the pylons

The Interdiction Pylon blocks mob spawns. Use Mob Filters to block only certain mobs, and stack several to cover more. Use the Lifeless Filter to block everything. You can change the working area for how far it blocks, but the Lifeless Filter ignores those settings. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's version.[3][4]

It needs a Hoe, and an inventory such as a chest above it to receive the crops. Once it's turned on, it starts farming. Its recipe is the mod's own, not changed by the pack.[3][4]

Resetting filters

The pack has shapeless recipes that turn a Mob Filter, Player Filter or Potion Filter back into the same filter type.[4]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Pylons?

2 parts

All of the Pylons quests sit in a single chapter called "Pylons". It's a small chapter: four filter quests you can start right away, then four Pylon quests that unlock from them. Here's what each one asks you to obtain and what it teaches.[3]

The filter quests (start here)

  • a quest in "Pylons" ("He's uninvited!") asks for a Mob Filter. You click a mob with the filter to set it. Each filter holds only 1 mob, so blocking five different mobs takes five filters. Clicking a different mob swaps the one inside.[3]
  • a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Potion Filter. Have a potion effect on you, right click with the filter to move the effect into it, and repeat until it's filled and active. The quest says this also works with modded effects and ones you can't normally get from potions, like Haste or Resistance.[3]
  • a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Player Filter. Right click a player with it to set them, then put it in the Expulsion Pylon to whitelist them. By default the Pylon's owner isn't expelled.[3]
  • a quest in "Pylons" ("Finally peace and quiet.") asks for a Lifeless Filter. It stops mob spawns in a 25x25 chunk area, at every Y level, hostile or passive. Forced spawns from spawners or spawn eggs still get through, and there's no whitelisting with this filter.[3]

The Pylon quests

  1. a quest in "Pylons" unlocks after the Potion Filter quest and asks for the Infusion Pylon. Once a potion effect is loaded in with a Potion Filter, it keeps giving you that effect wherever you are. The quest says it has no set radius, unlike a Beacon.[3]
  2. a quest in "Pylons" ("Get off my lawn!") unlocks after the Player Filter quest and asks for the Expulsion Pylon. It keeps non-whitelisted players out of a set number of chunks around it. You pick 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunks in the GUI, top left. It can't be placed too close to spawn.[3]
  3. a quest in "Pylons" unlocks after both the Mob Filter quest and the Lifeless Filter quest, and asks for the Interdiction Pylon. It blocks mob spawns. Use Mob Filters for specific mobs (you can stack several) or a Lifeless Filter for everything. The working area sets how far it blocks, but a Lifeless Filter ignores those settings.[3]
  4. a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Harvester Pylon and unlocks after another quest in the same chapter. It's a simple auto-farm: place it on or in the water source and it harvests and replants fully grown crops. The area can be 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 blocks. It needs a hoe and an inventory, such as a chest, above it to receive the crops.[3]
Tip: Do the Player Filter quest before the Expulsion Pylon quest. The Expulsion Pylon quest itself points you back to the Player Filter quest for whitelisting.[3]

Unverified The Harvester Pylon quest depends on one more quest in the chapter that isn't described in the available sources, so the exact starting point of that branch is unconfirmed.

Which Pylons config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The Pylons options all live in the server config file, config/pylons-server.toml. Here is how the pack sets the ones you are most likely to touch. The only value the file marks as changed from the mod default is the Harvester Pylon's work delay, so I start with that one.[7]

The one value the pack changed

harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay is set to 20 ticks in this pack. The mod default is 60, so the Harvester Pylon waits much less between harvest attempts than in a stock install. The allowed range is 10 to 120.[7]

Harvester Pylon

Infusion Pylon

Expulsion Pylon

Teams

general.teamSupportEnabled is true. Team support is active whenever a compatible mod (FTB Teams or Argonauts) is installed.[7]

What changed in Pylons between versions?

Pylons has been part of All the Mods 10 since version 2.2 or earlier, so it's one of the longer-standing mods in the pack. The exact first release isn't pinned down in the sources I have.[2]

  • All the Mods 10 3.2 updated Pylons from 5.1.1 to 5.2.1.[8]
  • All the Mods 10 4.14 ships Pylons 5.2.1 (file pylons-1.21.1-5.2.1.jar), the same version that 3.2 introduced.[2][8]

Unverified What actually changed between Pylons 5.1.1 and 5.2.1 is unverified. No mod changelogs for the shipped jars are available, so I can't say which features, fixes or balance tweaks came with the update.
